Renzo's POV

I sat by the window, cleaning my gun when Leo walked in. It was past eleven, and the house was quiet. The only sound came from the guards outside and the light drizzle of rain.

I already knew something was wrong.

Leo never came looking for me this late unless Don wanted something.

Leo stood by the door, staring at me for a moment without saying anything. That alone made me stop cleaning my gun..

“Don’t you knock?” I finally asked.

His hands rested in his pockets as he pushed himself away from the doorframe.

“No one knocks in this house, Renzo. You know that.”

"Hm."

I kept cleaning my gun.

“Don Vattelli wants to see you.”

I stopped cleaning the gun. “Now?”

Leo nodded. “Now.”

Without another word, I coupled my gun back together.

Then I got up and walked to his study, a part of the house where only a few people were allowed to go.

The door was slightly open. Something Don Vattelli did on purpose. He gave you the illusion that you were welcome, but depending on who you were, that same door could also be a path to your death.

I walked in.

His study was quiet and dimly lit, but something was different. He wasn't sitting in his chair as usual.

He stood by the window, watching the rain.

"Sit," he said without turning around to face me.

And I did just that, lowering myself into a chair in front of his table.

When he slowly turned to face me, I saw something in his eyes that I had rarely ever seen. It was Fear.

Don Vattelli wasn't a man who was easily afraid. Don was a man who had made his peace with death. After six decades of living in this world, he was one of the most feared men I had ever known.

But the fear in his eyes wasn't for himself.

It was for someone else.

"Valentina witnessed the murder of Senator Donny," he said, his voice ice cold.

My heart skipped a beat.

"Don Marco's men are after her. They saw her face, and if they find her, they will kill her."

He slowly sat behind his desk.

Don had spent his entire life building an empire people were afraid to challenge. He had survived enemies, betrayals and death.

But when it came to his daughter, none of that mattered. Valentina was the one weakness he had never been able to hide.

And now, if anything happened to her, I knew he wouldn't be able to survive it.

He leaned forward.

“Renzo,” he said quietly. “I need you to bring my daughter back.”

My chest tightened.

Of all the men he could have sent, he had chosen me. He knew the history between Valentina and me. He had never spoken about it, and neither had I.

But now he was asking me to go back into her life after being the one who broke her heart. I couldn't disobey Don's orders.

I just wasn't sure I was the right man to bring her home.

"Yes, sir," I replied. "But what if she refuses?"

Don looked at me for a moment.

“Then make her understand how serious this is. Don Marco is dangerous, Renzo. If she stays there, she could die.”

I lowered my eyes for a moment.

“Bring her back,” he said firmly. “She can hate me. She can hate you. I don't care.”

His jaw tightened.

“Just bring my daughter home alive.”

Three years ago, Valentina left Russia without me.

I had spent every day since then pretending I had made the right decision. I hadn't. And now I was going to see her again.

“The private jet leaves at six.”

“I'll be ready.”

“You leave tonight if you have to. I don't want her spending another day there alone.”

Without another word, I walked away.

I went to my room, packed a small bag and enough weapons. Sleep never came.

For three years, I had tried to forget Valentina but failed.

She had begged me to leave with her.

I had promised her once that we would have a life outside this world.

And when the time came, I was the one who refused to go.

I told myself I was doing the right thing.

Three years later, I still regretted it. I should have said yes.

Maybe if I had been with her, she wouldn't be in this much danger.

But I had made my choice and now I had to live with it.

I arrived at the airstrip before dawn.

The private jet's engines were already running, and ready to take off.

The sky was still dark, but slowly, everything was beginning to brighten.

Leo was already there.

“Be careful,” Leo said. “No mistakes.”

I looked at him. “I know.” Then I walked into the jet.

The cabin was empty, except for me.

I sat down, placing my bag on the next seat, and within seconds, we were in the air.

I looked out the window as Russia disappeared beneath the clouds.

By 10 a.m., I was in Rome.

When I stepped out of the jet, a taxi was already waiting for me.

I got in, and the driver handed me a piece of paper.

I opened it. It was Valentina's address.

It was from Don.

The man moved in mysterious ways.

The plan was very simple.

Go there.

Get her.

Leave.

Whatever it took.

This was the kind of mission that shouldn't require too much thinking.

But when it came to Valentina, my mind wasn't in the right place.

My heart wouldn't stop racing.

I kept imagining her expression when she sees me.

Would it be hatred, disappointment?

Or something else?

I shook my head.

Whatever I was thinking wasn't important right now.

After about an hour of driving, the taxi stopped in front of an apartment complex.

I got out and looked around, my eyes scanning every corner while also checking possible routes in case things didn't go as planned.

Valentina's apartment was in a good area.

It was a safe neighborhood, but at the same time, too quiet. If Don Marco's men had found her, this would be an easy place to trap someone.

I stood in front of her apartment door longer than I had intended.

I hesitated.

I wasn't a man whose hesitation was in his nature.

But this wasn't just any mission. This was Valentina. The woman I had loved since she was seventeen. Someone I had let walk away three years ago.

And now I was standing outside her door.

After almost six minutes, I finally raised my hand.

I knocked.

Daniel’s POVI called my father at nine that night, from the second phone, the one that stayed in the drawer unless I needed it.He answered before the first ring ended. That told me he had been waiting."Tell me about today.""Lunch went well." I walked to the window and stood to the side of the curtain, the way I always did. "I met the friend. Clara. She doesn't like me.""Does she matter?""She works with Valentina, and Valentina listens to her. I'd bet money she called Clara tonight and got told to be careful.""Then she's a problem.""A small one. She asked which firm I work for. I think she meant here in Russia"My father was quiet for a second. "And?""I told her it was a small one nobody knows. She let it go, but I know she'll look it up later.""Then there will be something to find." His voice was flat, the way it got when he was already moving to the next thing. "I'll have the website rebuilt tomorrow. Real names, real clients. Anyone who checks will see a boring little comp

VALENTINA'S POVRenzo drove me to lunch because my father said so, and I didn't have the energy to argue. We had barely spoken since the garden. He kept both hands on the wheel and his eyes on the road. I kept mine on my phone, reading Daniel's last message for the third time.‘Can't wait to meet her properly.’"I'll sit by the door," Renzo said when he parked."You don't have to come inside.""Your father wants me inside."I got out without answering. It was easier than saying what I really thought, which was that having him in the same room made everything harder.Clara was already at a table by the window. She jumped up and hugged me, then held me at arm's length. "You look good. Rested. It's weird.""Thanks, I think.""It's a compliment." Her eyes went over my shoulder. "And there's your shadow. He looks thrilled."I looked back. Renzo had taken a table near the door, his back resting on the wall, a menu open in front of him that he wasn't reading."Ignore him.""I'm trying. It's

  • The Mafia Heiress He Let Go    Chapter Seventy-Two

VALENTINA'S POVI woke up annoyed with myself before I even opened my eyes. One question. That was all it had been. A man curious about the house his girlfriend grew up in, asking where a room was, and I had spent half the night turning it into something else because Renzo's suspicion had apparently taken up permanent residence in my head, whether I wanted it there or not.I got up, got dressed, and told myself firmly that I wasn't going to waste today the way I had wasted last night.Clara called around ten, her voice bright through the phone, carrying with it the kind of ordinary cheerfulness that felt almost foreign after the week I'd had. "Okay, you have to tell me everything. How was the big reunion dinner?""It was good," I said, surprising myself with how easily the words came. "Really good, actually.""Details. Now."I found myself smiling as I told her about it, the restaurant, the easy conversation, the way it had felt almost normal for the first time in months. I left out t

  • The Mafia Heiress He Let Go    Chapter Seventy-One

VALENTINA'S POVDaniel took me to dinner at a small restaurant away from the city center, quiet enough that we could actually talk without anyone overhearing."You look happier," he said, reaching for my hand across the table. "Lighter, maybe.""I don't know if happier is the right word. Relieved, maybe." I let him hold my hand, the warmth of it familiar in a way that still surprised me after everything."It's strange, choosing something simple after weeks of nothing but fear.""You don't have to explain it to me. I'm just glad you're here."We talked about ordinary things for a while, the kind of conversation I hadn't allowed myself in months, restaurants we used to visit in Rome, a book he had read recently, nothing that touched the danger still circling somewhere beneath the surface of my life."How's your father handling everything?" he asked eventually, his tone careful, casual. "After everything that's happened.""Exhausted. Older, somehow, than he was a few months ago." I sighe

RENZO'S POVLeo was waiting for me when I walked into the small office. His face was tense."The consulate contact finally came through," he said, turning his laptop toward me. "Full name on that third identity. The one from the old visa photo."I leaned in. "And?""Not much on its own. Just a name and an old birth record, nothing recent attached to it." Leo scrolled down. "But I checked it against something else. A business school registry. Private school. The kind wealthy families send their sons to for connections, not education.""Go on.""The name shows up in a graduating class eleven years ago." Leo turned the screen so I could see it clearly. "Listed in the same program as a known associate of Don Marco's. Someone who still handles business for him today under his own name."I studied the two names side by side. "So whoever used this identity before Daniel knew someone close to Don Marco. Personally.""Close enough to share a graduating class. Could mean they were just classmat

DANIEL'S POVThe call connected on the second ring, the way it always did when my father actually wanted to talk instead of making me wait to remind me of my place."Well?" Don Marco's voice came through, flat and impatient."She's told me pieces," I said, pacing in the small apartment I had been using since arriving in Russia, every window covered, every habit calculated to leave nothing behind for anyone watching."She confirmed who her father really is. And she mentioned someone died recently. Shot, by her father's own hand. She didn't give me a name, only that the man had betrayed him."A pause on the other end, considering. "That would be Marcus.""You're certain?""I had Viktor confirm it. He said an insider told him Marcus got sloppy. He panicked when they came for him, and tried to run instead of holding his composure."My father's voice carried no grief, only clinical dismissal."Be glad Valetti killed him himself. If he had broken under questioning instead, we'd be dealing w
