LOGINRenzo's POV
I drove like a mad man to the hospital, ignoring every speed limit and traffic light along the way. All I could think about was Valentina.
Please, let me not be too late.
The thought of losing her crossed my mind, almost ruining my state of sanity. I barely parked before jumping out of the car and running inside. I found Don Valetti in the hallway, his face was pale and drawn.
I ran to him.
“Don, I came as soon as I heard,” I told him, trying to catch my breath. “How is she? Is she fine? What's the doctor's review?”
He inhaled deeply. “Renzo,” he choked. “Valetina…she—”
He swallowed hard.
“She tried to kill herself,” he revealed.
For a second, I couldn’t breathe.
“What?”
Don looked away.
My entire body went numb. I heard the words, but my mind refused to accept them.
He continued.
“A maid went to call her for dinner, but she didn’t answer. I thought she was still upset with me, so I ignored it.” He rubbed his trembling hand over his face.
“But something didn’t feel right. I went back and broke down the door.”
His voice cracked.
“She was lying lifeless on the bed.”
My breath hitched. Different flashes crossed my mind.
I had run after her, desperate to explain, but she locked herself in her room. I thought giving her space was the mature thing to do.
I left for the warehouse, planning to talk to her when I get back. Only to get called by the Don half–way through the journey. Now I couldn’t stop thinking about what might have happened if I had stayed.
My chest tightened, thinking about how everything was my fault. Don sighed, his breath shaky.
“I…I just don't know why she'd do this,” his voice cracked. “Does she hate it here so much? Does she hate me so much? That it's enough to take her own life?”
I wanted to tell him the truth, that this wasn’t his fault. But I couldn’t.
The sound of the door clicking grabbed our attention. We rushed forward. “Doctor, how is she?” we asked at the same time.
“She's stable now,” he said, his voice calm but that did nothing to relieve me.
“We managed to flush the drugs from her system. She’ll need to be monitored for a day or two, but she should be fine. Then, she can be discharged.”
My shoulders finally loosened. She was alive, that was all that mattered.
The doctor said she was unconscious but we could check on her one at a time. Don went in first. I waited outside, pacing around the hallway.
Every few seconds, I looked at the door, I kept replaying everything in my head.
When Don finally came out his eyes were red and his face looked older somehow. He just nodded at me and said, “Go. She’s still out. Talk to her even if she can’t hear you.”
His voice was low and broken. I nodded and pushed the door open.
The room was quiet except for the soft beeping of machines. Valentina looked so small on the white sheets. Her face was pale, her hair scattered across the pillow. Seeing her like that hurt more than I expected.
I walked slowly towards her, my legs feeling heavy. I pulled a chair close to the bed and sat down. I reached for her hand. It was cold and soft.
My eyes burned. A tear slipped down my cheek.
“Valentina… I’m so sorry,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “This is all my fault. I should have explained better. I should have made you listen.”
I tightened my grip on her hand and lowered my head beside her arm. At that point, I didn’t care who saw me cry.I stayed beside her, talking, even though she couldn’t answer. I told her how scared I was when I heard what had happened to her. I apologized again and again, hoping somehow she could hear me.
Eventually exhaustion took over, and I fell asleep still holding her hand.
I don’t know how long I slept. Suddenly I felt a movement. Her fingers moved against mine. My eyes snapped open.
I lifted my head fast.
Valentina was awake, and she was staring at me with pure hatred,
“Valentina…” I said softly, sitting up straight. “Hey… you’re awake. Thank God. Listen, I need to explain what really happened with that maid—”
“Don’t,” she cut me off, her voice hoarse and sharp.
“Don’t you dare talk to me.”
“Please just hear me out,” I begged, still holding her hand.
“I said don’t!”
“Nothing happened. She was just... I never—”
“Get away from me!” she screamed, yanking her hand away from me so hard the IV line pulled.
“I hate you! I hate everything about you!”
“Valentina, calm down, you’re still weak—”
“Don’t tell me to calm down!” she yelled louder, her face twisting with anger.
“You ruined everything!” she creamed.
“You’re a liar! I trusted you!”
“I wish I had never met you!”
Her voice broke.
“I never want to see you again!”
“I hate you so much I can’t even look at you!”
I flinched. I would have preferred a slap to hearing those hurtful words.
Her voice got higher and louder. The monitors started beeping faster. I tried talking over her, trying to explain what she had seen again, how it was all a misunderstanding, how I only cared about her, but she didn’t listen at all. She just kept screaming and thrashing on the bed.
“Get out! Get out of this room! I hate you Renzo! I hate you!”
The monitors suddenly screamed and the door opened. Two nurses and a doctor rushed inside.
“Sir, you need to step away,” one of the nurses said firmly, pushing me back gently but strongly.
“She’s just upset, please let me—”
“Now,” the doctor ordered, already checking the machines and trying to hold her down carefully.
“She’s agitated and we need to subdue her before she hurts herself.”
I backed up against the wall, watching them as they tried to calm her down. But she kept fighting them, her eyes still locked on me.
I couldn’t move. The way she looked at me stayed with me. Pure hatred, as if I was the worst thing that had happened to her.
My eyes burned, but I didn’t look away.
“I hate you, Renzo!”
Her voice followed me even after the nurses shut the door. And for the first time, I wondered if I had already lost her.
VALENTINA'S POVDaniel arrived at 6:58 pm, two minutes early, and Renzo made him wait at the gate for four more.I watched from the window of the small sitting room. Renzo took the bottle out of Daniel's hands, turned it over, checked the seal, the label, the bottom. Then he handed it to Leo, who carried it away somewhere I couldn't see. Daniel stood there with his hands open and a polite smile, like a man who had expected exactly this."They're being thorough," my father said behind me. He had come in without a sound. "Good.""Dad, he's just a guest.""Nobody is just a guest in this house." He straightened his cuffs. "Come. I want him seated before the soup goes cold."I found Renzo in the hallway on my way to the dining room. He was alone, checking his phone, and he put it away the moment he saw me."The bottle was clean," he said. "I tested it myself. Nothing in it, nothing under the label.""Then you can relax a little.""That's not my job.""Renzo." I stopped in front of him. I h
Daniel’s POVI called my father at nine that night, from the second phone, the one that stayed in the drawer unless I needed it.He answered before the first ring ended. That told me he had been waiting."Tell me about today.""Lunch went well." I walked to the window and stood to the side of the curtain, the way I always did. "I met the friend. Clara. She doesn't like me.""Does she matter?""She works with Valentina, and Valentina listens to her. I'd bet money she called Clara tonight and got told to be careful.""Then she's a problem.""A small one. She asked which firm I work for. I think she meant here in Russia"My father was quiet for a second. "And?""I told her it was a small one nobody knows. She let it go, but I know she'll look it up later.""Then there will be something to find." His voice was flat, the way it got when he was already moving to the next thing. "I'll have the website rebuilt tomorrow. Real names, real clients. Anyone who checks will see a boring little comp
VALENTINA'S POVRenzo drove me to lunch because my father said so, and I didn't have the energy to argue. We had barely spoken since the garden. He kept both hands on the wheel and his eyes on the road. I kept mine on my phone, reading Daniel's last message for the third time.‘Can't wait to meet her properly.’"I'll sit by the door," Renzo said when he parked."You don't have to come inside.""Your father wants me inside."I got out without answering. It was easier than saying what I really thought, which was that having him in the same room made everything harder.Clara was already at a table by the window. She jumped up and hugged me, then held me at arm's length. "You look good. Rested. It's weird.""Thanks, I think.""It's a compliment." Her eyes went over my shoulder. "And there's your shadow. He looks thrilled."I looked back. Renzo had taken a table near the door, his back resting on the wall, a menu open in front of him that he wasn't reading."Ignore him.""I'm trying. It's
VALENTINA'S POVI woke up annoyed with myself before I even opened my eyes. One question. That was all it had been. A man curious about the house his girlfriend grew up in, asking where a room was, and I had spent half the night turning it into something else because Renzo's suspicion had apparently taken up permanent residence in my head, whether I wanted it there or not.I got up, got dressed, and told myself firmly that I wasn't going to waste today the way I had wasted last night.Clara called around ten, her voice bright through the phone, carrying with it the kind of ordinary cheerfulness that felt almost foreign after the week I'd had. "Okay, you have to tell me everything. How was the big reunion dinner?""It was good," I said, surprising myself with how easily the words came. "Really good, actually.""Details. Now."I found myself smiling as I told her about it, the restaurant, the easy conversation, the way it had felt almost normal for the first time in months. I left out t
VALENTINA'S POVDaniel took me to dinner at a small restaurant away from the city center, quiet enough that we could actually talk without anyone overhearing."You look happier," he said, reaching for my hand across the table. "Lighter, maybe.""I don't know if happier is the right word. Relieved, maybe." I let him hold my hand, the warmth of it familiar in a way that still surprised me after everything."It's strange, choosing something simple after weeks of nothing but fear.""You don't have to explain it to me. I'm just glad you're here."We talked about ordinary things for a while, the kind of conversation I hadn't allowed myself in months, restaurants we used to visit in Rome, a book he had read recently, nothing that touched the danger still circling somewhere beneath the surface of my life."How's your father handling everything?" he asked eventually, his tone careful, casual. "After everything that's happened.""Exhausted. Older, somehow, than he was a few months ago." I sighe
RENZO'S POVLeo was waiting for me when I walked into the small office. His face was tense."The consulate contact finally came through," he said, turning his laptop toward me. "Full name on that third identity. The one from the old visa photo."I leaned in. "And?""Not much on its own. Just a name and an old birth record, nothing recent attached to it." Leo scrolled down. "But I checked it against something else. A business school registry. Private school. The kind wealthy families send their sons to for connections, not education.""Go on.""The name shows up in a graduating class eleven years ago." Leo turned the screen so I could see it clearly. "Listed in the same program as a known associate of Don Marco's. Someone who still handles business for him today under his own name."I studied the two names side by side. "So whoever used this identity before Daniel knew someone close to Don Marco. Personally.""Close enough to share a graduating class. Could mean they were just classmat
