The metal latch on the stall door was cold, but it was the only thing keeping Charlotte from collapsing onto the filthy bathroom floor.

She pressed her forehead against the door, her knuckles white as she clamped both hands over her mouth. She didn't dare breathe. She didn't dare make a sound.

Because two inches away, separated only by a thin wall, her husband was cheating on her with her twin sister.

"Olivia... God, you're so tight," Sean groaned, the sound guttural and unmistakable.

It was the same voice that had whispered "I do" with 200 guests as witness Five years ago. The same voice that had promised her father on his deathbed that he would treasure Charlotte for the rest of his life.

Slap. Slap. Slap.

The rhythmic, wet thumping of skin against skin rattled the stall walls, shaking Charlotte's very bones.

"Faster, Sean... oh God, yes!" Olivia panted, her high heels banging wildly against the partition.

"She's gone... the fat cow actually ran away crying..."

"Don't talk about that useless woman right now," Sean grunted, his breath ragged with exertion. "I don't want to think about her sickening body before I lose my boner. Just give me more."

In the dark, suffocating silence of her hiding spot, something inside Charlotte didn't just break..it shattered into a million sharp pieces.

Ten minutes ago, she'd been standing beneath the chandeliers of the Grand Ballroom, certain that nothing could feel worse than being laughed at by three hundred strangers.

She'd been wrong.

Charlotte pressed both hands over her mouth, as if that could somehow stop what she was hearing from being real, and let her mind drag her back to the moment everything had started falling apart.

It had started, as most disasters in her life did, with a dress.

The familiar quiet laughter was the first thing that told her something was wrong. She'd frozen beneath those same chandeliers, and hadn't needed to look around to know the whispers were about her. She had spent her entire life on the receiving end of that cruel, quiet mockery to ever miss the shift in the air.

Her hands had come up automatically to cover her chest, panic surging through her as she tried to hide the huge expanse of flesh exposed by the plunging neckline of the emerald silk dress she wore. The tight silk had clung violently to her waist, accentuating every curve, every dip, and every inch of the voluptuous body she had spent years trying to hide under oversized cardigans and modest layers.

A dress she never would have chosen for herself.

A dress her twin sister had practically forced over her hips.

"You hide yourself like a disgraced house wife, Charlotte!" Olivia had scolded earlier that evening, standing behind her in the mirror, "You always dress like an old woman. You're stunning! You just need to stop being so terrified of your own body. Trust me, Sean and everyone else will be speechless!"

God, she'd actually believed her. She'd stood in front of that mirror and let herself hope, just for one night, that she could be the kind of woman men looked at with wanting instead of pity.

Stupid. So stupid.

"Charlotte!"

Olivia's voice had rung out across the ballroom floor, bright and sweet, and every head within earshot had turned along with it. Charlotte spun around, heart already climbing into her throat, ready to beg her sister to help her disappear into a corner somewhere. Then she'd seen what Olivia was wearing, and the words died in her mouth.

The exact same dress. The exact same shade of emerald silk, but on Olivia, it fell in a slender, elegant drape, looking effortlessly beautiful, while Charlotte looked like she was practically bursting at the seams.

Walking right beside her, holding a champagne flute in one hand and resting his other casually on the curve of Olivia's waist, was Sean. Dressed in a sharp, tailored black tuxedo, he was leaning down toward her sister, a warm, affectionate smile lingering on his lips. A smile Charlotte hadn't seen directed at her in years.

Olivia had practically glided forward, stopping just inches away, her eyes dragging slowly down Charlotte's body in mock shock. Her gaze had lingered ruthlessly on the tight swell of Charlotte's stomach before rising to meet her eyes.

"Oh, Charlotte..." Olivia had whispered loudly, her tone dropping into a patronizing sigh that echoed across the hushed room. "I had no idea you would wear this dress tonight! I thought you said you were going with that loose navy blue one? This is... well, it certainly looks very different on your figure."

Charlotte's mind had reeled, shock paralyzing her tongue. You bought it for me! You begged me to put it on! The words screamed in her head, but no sound had escaped her throat.

Sean's head had snapped up at Olivia's words, and the moment his eyes landed on her, his whole face twisted in rage and disgust. He'd crossed the space between them in three sharp strides, and Charlotte had instinctively shrunk back, bumping into a waiter carrying a tray of champagne, sending two flutes crashing to the marble floor.

"What in God's name do you think you're wearing, Charlotte?" Sean had growled, his voice dripping with venom.

"Sean... I didn't know it would fit like this..." Charlotte had stammered, her trembling hands tearing at the silk, desperately trying to pull the fabric higher. "Olivia brought it to the house... she swore it looked beautiful—"

"You look repulsive!" Sean had barked, his voice rising high enough to disrupt the quiet of the entire room. Gazes shifted toward them and hushed whispers erupted instantly into open snickers. "Have you completely lost your mind? You have no sense of decency! You look like a cheap harlot standing there! Olivia is wearing the exact same gown, so why do you look so grotesque? I can't even stand the sight of you. You are an absolute embarrassment to me and my entire family!"

The humiliation had struck Charlotte like a physical blow to the chest, knocking the air right out of her lungs. Her face had flushed red-hot, tears welling up in her eyes, burning her lashes.

Olivia had stepped in close, resting a soothing hand on Sean's tense forearm, her voice dropping into something honeyed and poisonous. "Sean, please, not here, you'll upset her." Then, turning those wide, pitying eyes on Charlotte, loud enough to carry to the very back row of onlookers, "Char, honey, you know your body just isn't built for dresses like this. It's not your fault. Some of us just aren't meant to pull certain things off."

Sean looked away, and didn't spare his wife another glance. "Get out," he had commanded callously, unable to stomach the sight of her anymore. "Go out front right now, get in the limo, and just go home. I don't want to see your face for the rest of the night."

Charlotte's world had shattered right then and there. Tears had blurred the image of her husband's disgusted scowl and her twin sister's barely hidden, triumphant smirk.

Without another word, she had turned on her heel and run. She couldn't go outside into the flashing cameras of the paparazzi looking like a broken, sobbing mess. She had sprinted into the long corridor, ducking into the first private restroom she could find just to catch her breath, wipe her face, and attempt to stitch her dignity back together.

She had thought that was it. She had thought that was the absolute worst night of her life.

A particularly hard thud against the partition wall snapped Charlotte back to the present reality. The cool metal pressed against her sweaty forehead. The loud disgusting sounds of her husband fucking her twin sister against the tile echoed through the tiny stall, drowning out the silent screaming in her mind.

They hadn't even waited to see if she really left.

They had snuck into the bathroom minutes after humiliating her, using her pain as their twisted foreplay.

Charlotte's chest heaved, but no more tears fell. The burning shame that had threatened to consume her in the ballroom suddenly vanished, replaced by a pitch-black silence she felt deep inside her soul.

Another groan from Sean, and something inside Charlotte simply snapped.

It happened all at once. Every meal she'd skipped to fit into dresses he approved of. Every time she'd laughed off his cutting little jokes at dinner parties. Every time she'd defended Olivia to their mother, to their friends, to herself, insisting her sister loved her, insisting this was normal, sisters teased each other, this was fine, this was fine, this was fine.

It was never fine.

A scream was building in her throat, but she swallowed it whole. No. She would not give them the satisfaction of hearing her break. Not again. Not tonight.

Charlotte rose from the toilet seat like a completely different person, and stepped out of the stall on legs that no longer shook. She marched straight to the mirrors, ignoring the sounds still bleeding through the wall behind her, and stared her own reflection dead in the eye like she was meeting a stranger for the first time.

She yanked a paper towel free and scrubbed the ruined mascara and dried tears from her cheeks in hard, furious strokes. She dug through her clutch until she found her dark red lipstick and carefully applied it.

If Sean wanted a harlot, fine. She would give him exactly that.

She hooked two fingers into the neckline and tugged it lower, baring the full, soft swell of her chest without an ounce of the shame she'd worn like a second skin all night. She looked, for the first time in years, dangerous.

Clutch gripped so tightly her knuckles ached, Charlotte shoved through the restroom doors and out into the dim hallway, her chin high, and heart still a raw and bleeding thing in her chest, but she didn't care.

She had only walked a few steps when she noticed a man was standing in the shadows.

He was dressed in a black tailored suit with a white dress shirt, his hands casually tucked into his trousers as he leaned against the wall.

The dim lighting caught the sharp lines of his jaw and his piercing eyes. He was nursing a glass of wine, looking thoroughly bored with his evening.

In her state of blind fury, Charlotte barely looked at his face or his demeanor. All she saw was the black suit, the white shirt, and a man standing idly by the service corridors. A waiter, she thought instantly.

Perfect.

Charlotte marched straight toward him, her high heels clicking sharply against the floor. Her chest heaved with every breath, her dress shifting seductively over her hips as she approached.

The man noticed her approach, his eyes tracking her movements. He didn't move an inch, merely tilting his head as she stepped directly into his personal space, the scent of her perfume invading his senses.

"Excuse me," Charlotte said, her voice dropping into a low, breathless command, completely devoid of her usual timidity.

The man raised an eyebrow, his gaze dropping down the plunging neckline of her dress, before rising back to her fierce gaze. "Can I help you, ma'am?" he murmured, his voice deep, smooth, and laced with a rich, dark baritone that vibrated right through her.

Charlotte didn't hesitate. She stepped closer, her chest almost brushing against his jacket. She reached into her clutch, pulled out a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills she had kept for the evening's charity auction, and slapped them firmly against his chest.

"My name is Charlotte Sinclair," she whispered in a breathless tone, "I will pay you a thousand dollars to take me into an empty lounge right now, pin me against the wall, and have sex with me until I forget my own name. Do we have a deal?"

Charlotte had spent the rest of the morning convincing herself that she had plenty of time to solve her problem, so when Evelyn appeared at her door shortly before noon to remind her about lunch, she was still no closer to finding a suitable date for the wedding."Your lunch meeting with Mr. Lawson is in thirty minutes," Evelyn informed her. "I've confirmed the reservation at the Grand Meridian, and his office says he'll meet you there."Charlotte looked up from the documents spread across her desk. "Thank you. Did he say whether the meeting would take long?""He expects about an hour, possibly longer if you need to discuss the revised proposal in detail.""An hour should be fine." Charlotte closed the file she had been reviewing and reached for her handbag. "I'll take the documents with me."Evelyn nodded before stepping aside to let her pass, and Charlotte gathered the papers she needed before leaving her office. She had met Mr. Lawson several times over the years, and although he h

They reached Charlotte's office, and Evelyn opened the door for her.The room was exactly as Charlotte remembered it, from the long windows overlooking the city to the shelves lined with company records. A framed photograph of her father stood near the corner of the desk, beside a smaller picture of the two of them taken years earlier at the opening of one of his first major commercial developments.Charlotte paused when she saw it.Her father had been smiling in the photograph, one hand resting on her shoulder while she stood beside him in a pale dress. She remembered how proudly he had shown her the finished building that day, explaining how much work had gone into turning an empty piece of land into something that would serve thousands of people. He had wanted her to understand the business, not simply inherit a title and a collection of shares. And she had once wanted that too. After his death, however, grief had swallowed her whole. Then came the endless disappointment of her mar

Charlotte had barely reached her car when the full absurdity of her decision finally caught up with her.She had agreed to attend Olivia's wedding, something she had spent the last five months telling herself she would never do, and then she had made matters worse by promising to bring a date. A man who would sit beside her while she watched her twin marry her former husband, endure the curious stares of people who knew exactly what had happened, and somehow avoid becoming the subject of the next round of gossip surrounding the Sinclair family. What kind of man would willingly agree to that?Charlotte opened the driver's door and dropped her handbag onto the passenger seat before sliding behind the wheel. She sat there for a moment, staring through the windscreen at the workers carrying flowers into the mansion, and wondered whether she should turn around, march back inside and tell them she had changed her mind. The thought lasted all of three seconds. She could already imagine Sean'

For a second, the sunroom was so silent that Charlotte could hear the distant clatter of scaffolding being unloaded on the lawn. Then Sean let out a sharp, incredulous laugh."Your date?" He stared at her as though she had just spoken in a foreign language, his eyes narrowing. "You're joking.""Do I look like I'm joking, Sean?" Charlotte asked, keeping her voice steady.Sean moved away from the back of the sofa, stepping into the open space between them. The smug confidence he usually wore around Olivia had vanished, replaced by an expression of disbelief that quickly turned into irritation. Charlotte, the wife he had discarded, the woman he and his family had spent years making feel undesirable because of her weight, was planning to attend his wedding with another man. The very idea seemed to offend him."Who?" he demanded. "Who the hell are you planning to bring? Some man you've known for five minutes, or are you going to hire some stranger just so you don't have to sit there alone?

Charlotte crossed the courtyard connecting the North Wing to the main house, her handbag resting against her hip. The morning air was cool, but the noise from the wedding preparations was enough to ruin any chance of enjoying it.Two workers hurried past her carrying a large vase filled with white roses. Another stood near the entrance, arguing with a woman who appeared to be one of the wedding planners."No, no, no! Mrs. Sinclair specifically requested the arrangements near the fountain. Why are you bringing them here?"Charlotte stopped.Mrs. Sinclair. For a moment, she wondered which one they meant. Then she remembered that, in two weeks, Olivia would officially become Sean's wife.Again, Charlotte found herself wondering how she had ended up living in a house where everyone seemed determined to erase her while she was still standing right in front of them. She continued inside. The main house looked even worse than the gardens. Flower arrangements covered nearly every available su

FIVE MONTHS LATERCharlotte woke to the sound of a truck reversing outside her window. She groaned, rolled onto her other side, and pulled the duvet over her head, hoping whoever was making all that noise would have the decency to stop. Unfortunately, the rumbling only grew louder, followed by the sound of men shouting to one another and something heavy being dragged across the driveway. She opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling."You're kidding me."It was barely six in the morning. For the past three days, trucks had been arriving at the Sinclair estate with flowers, furniture, decorations, and enough equipment to host a small festival. Workers had taken over the gardens, event planners had filled the main house with their endless discussions, and the staff had been running around as though the future of the country depended on everything being ready on time. All because Sean Sinclair was getting married.Again.Well, technically, it would be his first wedding to the woman he ac
