LOGIN"Mami, why does this pasta taste different."
Amie forced a smile on her lips, while her heart continued beating rapidly. From the few information she had gathered about Rauf's relationship with June, it was that she personally prepared his meal. And no one in the mansion could replicate her taste. "Darling, maybe it's because you just had surgery. You're not relying heavily on your sense of taste again." Rauf frowned. He doubted that, but there was no responsible reason why Amie paste should taste so horrible. Maybe, it was the fatigue of going and coming to the hospital. But still, he pushed the pasta aside. He just couldn't get himself to swallow something so horrible. Amie felt her palm sweaty. "I promise to remake it for you just the way you like it once you get discharged. By then, it should taste better." She closed the food flask and thrust it into the bag back. Thankfully, she was able to come up with something or else Rauf might have noticed something was wrong. Satisfied with her response, Rauf nodded. "Great." His eyes moved over her slowly. "I can't believe I can finally look at you all I want now." Then his brow furrowed. "Where's the gift you promised to give me once I regained my sight." Amie froze. What gift? She tried racking her brain if she had gotten any information on that, but nothing. The maids and guards barely knew what they discuss in their private room. She chuckled. "I'm still preparing the gift. Can you wait a little more?" She hurried and placed a kiss on his checks to distract him. But Rauf wasn't distracted at all. Before he accepted to go for the surgery, his wife had promised him and encouraging gift. And she assured him the gift was ready, all he had to do was go for the surgery and get well. So, why was she claiming to be preparing the gift now. Something didn't add up. Before he could think of it further, Amie pulled out a chain from her purse. "Look at this. I still have the chain you gave to me." Rauf smiled at it. He had given this chain to his wife, but he had no idea what the chain looked like. It was to celebrate their third year anniversary. What was he thinking that things weren't adding up. If Amie had the chain, it was clear that Amie was his wife. He shouldn't be distracted by little things. He collected the chain from her, and carefully placed it around her neck. "I'm glad I can finally put this around your neck myself." Amie beamed. Thankfully, she had found the stupid chain when the maids were clearing the room to throw out June's stuff. And one of the stupid maid had seen Rauf giving it to her on their third wedding anniversary. Satisfied with it, she smiled at Rauf. If she were being honest, the chain rightfully belonged to her and she was taking it back. Meanwhile, June left the hospital and spent the last cash with her to take a ride back to Ellie's house. With her family in support of Amie's scheme, she refused to return to Trevor's house. And she had absolutely nowhere to go. When Ellie saw her, she didn't utter a word. She only pulled her closer as if she could read her mind. She let her cry out her heart desire, while cursing Rauf's name. When they were done with that, Ellie prepared hot pepper soup for her. June gladly ate everything, leaving nothing on the plate. She had no idea if it was because she hadn't eaten, or if it was the pregnancy making her very hungry. She thanked Ellie before lying down to catch some sleep. When she woke up, Ellie had gone to work, leaving a note beside her that some side dishes were in the freezer and she should make herself feel at home. June felt more like a bother than at mouth. She knew Ellie was also striving to take care of herself. She couldn't impose on her like that. She needed to find something to do. The past five years of her life had been towards satisfying Rauf. She had buried her own dreams and ambitions just to satisfied Rauf and made sure he was okay. But now it felt like she had wasted most of her time. By the time Ellie got back from work, June was still curled up on the bed. She couldn't afford to eat anymore from Ellie. "Come on! You need to eat for the baby to be strong." Ellie had insisted. She even resulted in feeding June herself until she was certain she had had enough. After the meal, June asked. "What do I do with myself now?" Her voice was timid, scared. "If it was just me, I wouldn't be bothered that much, but look at this." She pointed at her stomach. "I have a baby on the way and I could barely even take care of myself. How am I supposed to care for the innocent child coming?" Ellie held her back. "Don't ever think you're alone. I promise to be here to support you." "But..." "No, buts, June. We're friend. And a friend in need is a friend indeed." June wiped off her tears and let out a small smile. "Even that, I can't let you near all responsibility for us. I have to do something too." Ellie smiled. "I've thought about this while at work. Why don't we go back to school?" June snorted. "School? How am I supposed to pay for school when I can't even feed myself? And remember I am pregnant" Ellie nodded. "I already know you will have tons of excuses not to. But June you were the most brilliant student I know before you forfeited everything for a marriage of love. I know you can survive this. So, I saw some part time school online. We can be working and going to school." She wasn't sure Ellie's plan was the best. "And what about my baby?" Ellie sighed. "Don't worry. I'll be here to support you all the way."The shopping bags remained untouched at the side of her bed where Ellie had dropped them. June lay on the bed, her hands and legs spread out in exhaustion.Ellie lay beside her but didn't utter a word. She could tell that something had gone wrong, and June was clearly not ready to speak about it. She bit her lower lip, having no idea how to bring the topic up.Ever since June left for the mansion, Ellie had been tempted to call her every second and ask how it was going. But she had to calm herself down and tell herself that whatever the result was, June needed to accept the decision first. And right now, she looked like she was still in the stage of accepting it.Instead of disturbing her, Ellie left the room to prepare food for her. Recently, she had observed that June had a large appetite. Maybe something yummy and rich would improve her mood. She spent hours slaving in the kitchen. And she made sure to prepare chicken too. It was June's favourite for now.But when she returned to t
"I'm ready for my eye surgery. I want to see everything that's happening around me, including my baby."Not a lot of things surprise Chris, but he stopped, looking his mother in the eyes. "Are you sure, Mother?"Serena patted his back playfully. "Of course, I am."Chris nodded. He had been waiting for her to make that decision. She had promised that once they found her daughter, she would get the operation done. "I'll book an appointment."At the end of the day, they had to leave the mansion with two different cars. Amie and Serena were in one, while he drove June in his own car.The cars stopped in one of the finest shopping malls in New Central State. It was where Serena used to shop for everything she needed before she went blind."Come on, it's time to have some fun," Chris whispered to June. But all she did was stare at the mall. With the rate things were going for her, she knew she could hardly afford anything in this mall. She felt like an imposter standing at the mall. The peo
"I'm free if June can come with us."June blinked, her heart raced for a different reason. She already appreciated the fact that Chris had helped her get into the mansion, organized the female staff for her to question, and now this. She shook her head. "No. No." While moving her hand simultaneously. "I wouldn't want to intrude on a family outing."Amie beamed with delight, at least she knows where she's not welcome. "That's true. It wouldn't be polite for you to hang out with us, especially since it's our first outing as family." She emphasised on the word 'family.'Serena paused from eating. "Amie, darling, there's nothing wrong with June coming with us. She's friend with Chris and he's inviting her personally."Amie turned towards her, pouting even though Serena couldn't see her. "Mum!" She held her hand tight. "This is the first time I am going out with you both. Do we have to bring a stranger with us?" She turned back at June with an obvious glare. Chris turned towards her with
The room smelled like alcohol and smoke, making Rauf shift on his seat as he lifted a glass of alcohol to his lips, throwing all its content into his mouth at once. The sharp sting of it burned his throat, but it was exactly the way he liked it.Samir stood in front of him, his hands folded across his chest like a student waiting for his punishment.Rauf lifted another glass as if it was autopilot and tossed it in his mouth again. He scrunched up his face from the sting and threw the glass unceremoniously on the floor. It flew a few feet to where Samir was standing, narrowly missing his feet. The noise around them swallowed the sound of the glass shattering on the floor. To Rauf, it felt identical to the state of his heart. His hand seemed to be bleeding from gripping the glass too tightly. But he could barely feel the pain. And oddly, he felt right at home. Though he was in a bar, far away from Kansas but in a bar with the finest collection of wine. And with people having the same
The bed June had thought would be comfortable did nothing to ease her distress. She could still remember the look on Amie's face as she claimed that Rauf had forgotten all about her. She pressed her hand to her small bump. "Baby, I promise you won't be alone in this world. Mummy will do her best to give you the family you deserved." She pursed her lip. "Even if it doesn't consist of your jerk of a father."She remained lying on the bed, dreading the morning. What would happen if she didn't find her mother among the women living at the mansion? She had no idea what else to do then, and she had blocked her father from ever reaching out to her again. June turned and tossed on the bed, her head spiralling with hundreds of reasons she might not find her mother, and one possibility of finding her mother again. She had no idea when she finally fell asleep, but when June woke up, one of her legs was at the end of the bed while she spread her hand out towards the other side in careless aban
Serena's voice repeated itself in her head as she followed Chris into the guest room. 'Her daughter's welcome party.'All her life, she had known Amie had a mother and that was her wicked stepmother, so how did she gain a new mother and even have the need to celebrate a welcome party. Once they got to the door of the room, Chris bid her goodnight, but June stopped him. Though she was nothing but a stranger to Chris, he had helped her a lot, she needed to return the favor. "I'm sorry if I am about to ask a personal question." She started, but all Chris did was stare at her. When he didn't say a word, she took it as a permission to ask her question. "Did you just say Amie is your sister?"Chris nodded, his gaze at alert. From the moment he had brought June into the mansion, he had noticed something strange about the way she stared at Amie. It was as if they were familiar with one another, but she hadn't said a word. June bit her lower lip. "Are you sure? Did you perform a DNA test t
