Chapter 4: A Friend Indeed
Annah left the restaurant and walked straight to her friend’s place. The situation was no longer a simple one and she couldn’t continue analyzing it by herself. She had to talk to someone and Rita was all she had.
Growing up without her parents had left Annah scarred but she never let it get to her. She could survive on her own.
Rita, her best friend use to be her roommate until she suddenly made it big. Annah had tried asking her but Rita only smiled and said Annah could not do the things she did for money. All Annah could remember was waking up from her operation and finding out that Rita was very rich now.
But they still talked about their work and relationship –well mostly, Rita was the one who talked about relationships. Annah had zero experience.
“Good morning,” Annah greeted the gatekeeper who was more than happy to welcome her into the private apartment.
“Welcome miss, your friend is home,” the old man told Annah.
Annah thanked him and proceeded to take the elevators. She had always wished at the back of her mind that one day Rita would offer her one of her spare rooms to stay but that never happened.
Rather than lose hope, Annah still held on tight. Rita was her best friend, one day, she would surely invite her to stay with her.
The elevator’s door dinged open and Annah stepped out. She walked to Rita’s door and rang the doorbell.
After a few seconds of waiting, the doorknob moved and it opened, revealing a blonde woman in nothing but red lingerie.
“I already told you to move the goods to the warehouse, what is wrong with you?” she screeched into the phone.
Her fake lashes landed on Rita. Her frown was still there but she soon smiled and hugged her friend.
“Annah!” she exclaimed. “What a pleasant surprise!”
“Hey, Rita!” Annah responded. They hugged one another and Rita ended her call.
She pulled Annah by the hand and led her to her sitting room. “So what’s up? How are you?” Rita asked as soon as they settled.
She seemed agitated and Annah wondered if she had taken any hard drinks again.
“I am fine. I just really missed you,” Annah said.
Rita ran her fingers through her hair and sighed. “Oh, Annah. Sometimes you forget how busy I am. I have told you that before you come to me, you need to give me notice unless it is an emergency…” she trailed off.
She was struggling not to sound rude but her impatience was getting the best of her. She had calls to follow through with her workers. One of her boyfriends was coming over as well and Annah’s presence was ruining a lot of things.
“I am sorry Rita, I know you have told me this but I don’t have anywhere to go…” Annah began. “You are the only one I have. If I don’t come to you with my problems, where else will I go?”
“Oh boy!” Rita sighed and got up. She walked to her bar and picked up two glasses. She poured milk into them and topped hers with whisky as flavor.
She brought the glasses to the couch, where Annah was, and handed one to her.
“Now, tell me, what is it?” Rita asked as she sipped her drink.
Annah rolled the glass of milk in her hand and looked at her friend. “I think I am going crazy Rita,” she began and Rita dropped her glass.
“What do you mean?”
“You know Connor Richards?” Annah asked.
Rita’s eyes sparkled and Annah thought of it only as recognition. “Who doesn’t know Connor Richards in this city?”
Rita’s breathing changed and she drew closer to Annah as the question caused turmoil in her heart. “Connor Richards is everywhere! What about him?” she asked Annah.
“I don’t know… but I had a dream… well more like a nightmare and in it, I saw him. I saw Connor…” Annah said.
Rita’s features were turning paler as the description continued.
“I couldn’t recognize him in the dream but when I woke up, he was everywhere… Rita, it felt so real. I think there is something wrong with me,” Annah concluded but this was not what Rita wanted to hear.
She came closer and held Annah’s hands, “Tell me, what did you see in the dream. What did Connor say to you?” she asked.
Annah got up and pulled her shirt. Rita frowned as her eyes settled on the bruises on her body.
“What the hell happened?” Rita screamed.
“I don’t know… In the dream Connor raped me… he even said some crazy things… like I was having his baby? Imagine, me… a baby? He said I had his baby three years ago and I should return it…”
Rita’s eyes enlarged and she almost dropped her glass of milk and whisky. This couldn’t be happening, she thought to herself.
Before Annah could look up at her, Rita smiled, covering up her panic.
“I am sure it was just a product of your imagination. The guy has been trending in the news for days now. There is no big deal. Just relax Annah,” she said.
“Rita, I thought of this same thing too. I felt I was only imagining him and everything but how can we explain these markings on my body and between my legs? I haven’t been with a man in years but Rita I swear I felt my pussy clench and it was wider than its usual size like I truly had sex! It’s crazy!”
Rita let out an awkward laugh and then made Annah pause. She looked at her friend and wondered what made her laugh because she couldn’t see the amusement in her predicament.
“I am sorry Annah...” Rita said. “Look, I am sure there is a perfect explanation. You probably fingered yourself all night. You know how deep you sleep when you complete a story-”
“But Rita I didn’t complete a story… I am battling with one currently!” Annah cried out.
Rita’s face turned serious again and she got up from the couch. “I am certain it is just you. Come on! Do you think Connor Richards will rape you? The man has enough money to buy a thousand women, and besides, I think if Connor wants you, he wouldn’t come to you in dreams,” she said.
CHAPTER 183Connor stared at the reflection in the Mirror. The white suit looked spectacular on him. He couldn't help but notice how much he had changed since Annah walked into his life. His eyes seemed to be lighter. He smiled more often and that was a long way from when he used to think that smiling was an exercise. Well, till Annah came in and changed her. He smiled at the thought. She was worth his every smile. Only the thought of her made him feel alive inside and she couldn't wait to spend the rest of his life with her. The door creaked open as Hans, Russo and Marcus walked in. He caught the teasing glint in their eyes and tried not to smile. "How do you feel?" Hans said "How the hell do you think he's supposed to feel? It's his wedding"Russo drawled. Connor almost rolled his eyes. Considering the fact that he didn't like to associate with many people, he considered them friends. Admitting it to himself made him cringe. "I know you can't wait to see her," Hans teased. "Ju
CHAPTER 182Annah felt overwhelmed and slightly shaken from what happened earlier. She couldn't believe that Micheal had attempted to take her away from the love of her life and from her future son. She felt overwhelmed and heavy with exhaustion but at same time she also felt relieved that at least Connor and her son were okay. She wouldn't have had it any other way. She winced as Connor swiped the soaked cotton wool across her bruise tenderly. There was a sort of tension that radiated from him so it didn't take too long to figure out that he wasn't fine. He was more focused on her bruise than at looking at her."You can talk to me. There's no need to keep your emotions away from me Connor" she placed a hand over his arm. "You were about to be hurt, Annah. Micheal was about to take you away from me" he growled lowly and ran a face over his hand in frustration. Annah knew she shouldn't feel relieved at someone's death but she couldn't help it. Micheal wasn't around to torment them any
CHAPTER 181Annah felt drowsy as she woke up. Her head was spinning and the pounding in her head heightened with each movement she made. Her eyes raked over her environment and the panic began to build in her chest. All she could remember was that she had been walking with that new guard and she'd been trying to make conversation. He had abruptly given her an apologetic look before she had blanked out. She could tell from her drowsiness that she'd been heavily drugged. She looked up at the window in the room. It looked like something like a dark cellar. Alarmed, she decided to call out for help and was met with instant silence entirely. Her mind drifted to her son, to Connor. What if they weren't safe as well, anxiety gave way to full on panic and she lunged up immediately and headed towards the bar of the cellar, she tried to shake it open but it remained unmoving under her grip. Nobody was outside, from the looks of it, it seemed like she would be the only one here."Help. Anyone
CHAPTER 180Annah felt off and very conflicted. There was obviously something that Connor was not telling her. She didn't know what it was but for him to act so distant, for her to be able to sense his anxiety, it was definitely enough to set him on edge. Martha played with her son and she stared at the empty space, lost in thought. She tried to calm her racing nerves but was unable to. Martha sneaked a curious glance at her. She wondered what it could be that distracted Annah so much. Whatever it was, it must be something enough to set her on edge. Annah son was occupied with drawing on paper. The little boy has taken such a liking to art that it amazed both Annah and Martha. He was able to come up with creative things and each time Annah or Martha came across his art. It rendered both of them breathless. "Are you okay Annah, you've been staring for hours" Martha said as she looked at Annah worriedly, her face etched in concern. "I'm just worried about Connor. He's been behaving
CHAPTER 179Something was wrong. Annah could sense it from Connor as they sat at the dinner table. He was occupied with cutting his son's food into smaller pieces. Everytime she tried to ask him if he was ok. He would assure her that he was and then would back it up with a smile that wasn't in the least bit convincing. She knew when he was trying to suppress his emotions, she knew when he was trying to keep what he was feeling away from her, all because he didn't want to dampen her mood. She noted the way his shoulders were a bit tight with tension, she noted the muscles in his jaw. She considered trying to get him to admit what was bothering him, but not here. Not at the dinner table. There were maids still serving platters of food that they couldn't even quite finish. She had tried to convince him of the fact that having a near buffet for dinner wasn't always necessary. But he wouldn't listen. He's always insistent in spoiling her and thier son. Hans hanged around the dinner table
CHAPTER 178Connor felt bothered as he stared at fge screen. Hans stood beside him, his face impassive but he knew Hans was just as worried as he was. They had been unable to get a clear view of the intruder's face. All that they got was the exact detail of his build. It was almost as if the intruder was very conscious about the camera. Apparently, he was smarter than Connor gave him credit for. Hans and Connor exchanged worried glances. It was hard to miss the pasty white shade of Hans knuckles. Connor was on edge, he could feel the anxiety eating him alive from the inside out. It was hard to focus on anything. He was conflicted between flying Annah and his son, preferably to another state and than staying here. At the back of his head, he knew Micheal still found a watch him, Micheal was silently gauging his every move, making plans on the move he would make next. This wasn't something that Connor could rush. This wasn't a decision that Connor could just hastily commence."How do
