Elena's POV
Beep.Beep.Beep, the sound fills my ears, my head drumming badly, and my, eyes squint open, immediately shocking me as the blinding sun from the window blocks my vision. The machines strapped to me, continue to make louder sounds, making two women in scrubs rush in, followed by a man in a white coat. "Who-' are'" I say my throat dry, my speech coming out as a groan. "We are here to help you dear" One of the nurses comes to my side, with a cup of water in hand, she hands it to me helping me gulp down the water relatively fast. "More?" she asks turning to me, her image becoming clearer "Who are you? Where am I?" and I turn around looking at the people around me, my mind blank of memory, "Who am I" I say to them and immediately, murmurs fill the room, they quickly monitor my chart, looking confused "Hello?" Is anyone going to answer me?"I frown trying to raise my body but I feel droopy immediately plastering myself on the bed back. One of the nurses is first to speak, "You are Miss Elena from your file here," she says carefully "Well, why am I here?" I frown, "And why can't I figure out anything?" The doctor comes forward, "You were recently transferred to this facility, four years ago, you've been in a coma, and we don't have your details only one call number when you wake up, the nurse here will make the call and I'm sure you will have more clarity" I frown, my mind blank of any emotions, I don't know what to feel, or how to act, I feel like a big question mark. Soon they come back to make another physical assessment and lab investigations, after a while, a nurse finally helps me stand on my feet again, and although I am wobbly, I'm at least happy I remember how to use my feet again. The Doctor comes back with my results by evening and every hope I had of someone coming to claim me or tell me my identity is crushed. "Your labs are quite perfect and you can eat dinner, tonight, after a year, that must feel good," he says with a hearty smile. "Did the person call back? Are they coming?" I frown turning to him. "Our facility specializes in taking care of people in coma, It's like a nursing home but for people like you, people come here and leave their loved ones here to be cared for, some people never wake up from their comas, they grow and die here, you woke up and unfortunately I think none is coming for you dear" I frown nodding when the door opens, revealing a man in a grey suit and white shirt, dark hair pulled back, bright green eyes blinking at me in shock, wrinkles around his eyes, a sheen of tears over them, and his lips pulled into a grin, what a handsome man. "Elena," he says happily, walking into the room, standing in front of me, and grabbing my fingers in his, " I've been waiting for you to wake up for years, and here you are" I frown, my eyes moving around his face, trying to recognize him but nothing comes to mind, "I'm sorry but who are you?" His eyebrows pop up in surprise turning to the Doctor, "It's true" He nods, "she doesn't even remember her name or who she is" The unknown man nods turning to me, pulling his hands from mine, and stepping back, "I'll explain to her, please give us time" he says to the doctor, leading him out of the room "Can someone explain to me what in the hell is going on?" I turn to him, a deep frown on my face "I can still see you have your fiery spirit, Elena," he says grabbing a seat and sitting in front of me, his arms crossed over each other, his eyes twinkling when the sun hits them, it's enough to make any woman go crazy. "My name is Elena?" I raise a brow at him for confirmation He nods, in confirmation, watching my every move I frown, "Do you know who I am? What do I do? Any family? Are you family?" He sucks his teeth into his mouth, "First let's get you out of here and get you dinner, then we can talk more" I shake my head in a no gesture, "I can't just up and leave with you, what if you're a kidnapper or something?" "Would I really come all the way here, driving for five hours to get to you, to only kidnap you?" he raises a brow at me standing up with a smirk on his lips. "Ha ha funny guy" I roll my eyes standing up, "Well can I get some clothes at least? The hospital gown is really dulling up my complexion" I raise a brow at him, my fingers placed on my waist. He nods, walking out of the room for a moment, soon he comes back with a few clothes in hand and shoes in the other. I pull on the black jeans, blue sweater, and black sandals, I turn to the mirror, my hair is black and long and my eyes are colored a dull blue, I have no skin issues or eye bags, I guess years in a coma could have some advantage. Soon we leave the hospital, nothing in my hands, no documents, no phone, no clothes, nothing, "You know I'm yet to catch your name?" I tell the man as he pulls open the back door of his SUV, a driver in front. "Oh, It's Alexander" he frowns "You don't remember anything, Elena?" I nod pushing myself into the car, he turns around, entering the car beside me. The car starts to move and he turns to me, "Your name is Elena Royal, and you are twenty-eight years old, we have known each other since we were children but right after Middle school we went our separate ways since I moved due to my father's death, I've not really heard much about what you've been doing all these years, but you were abandoned at some hospital four years ago, I went to the hospital to see someone and came across your room and they told me they were about to pull the plug on you since you have no family members, I took up your file and brought you here to this hospital" he narrates while I listen attentively "I never thought you would make it out of the coma, I tried to get some information off you but came up with nothing, your parents died years ago and your Grandfather is also late, I'm sorry," he says, his jaw clenching, his eyes dimming with sadness I frown, having no idea how to react or feel, I don't remember these people so I don't know how to feel about their death. "Have I been married? In love? Something, anything?" I frown turning to him He moves his head in a no motion, let's get you some dinner Elena, and we can figure out where to go from there. A few hours later we stop in front of a burger shop, we find ourselves in a booth, "What do you want to have?" he turns to me, raising his eyes to me This man is sexy I can't deny that, I frown, literally just got out of a four-year coma and I'm here drooling over some man, how brash of me. "I don't know Alex, order something for me" I raise a brow at him placing the menu back on the take and looking around the burger joint, there's only two people there, I look to the TV, playing the news, I sigh, I can't believe this is my life now, how do I survive? Will I be homeless now?m will Alex leave me to fend for myself after this? "Are you okay?" He turns to me with a frown on his face "Where do I go from here?"I turn to him my frown deepening He sighs, I have two options, "I take you back to town and you find a place to stay and figure yourself out, or" he shuffles on his feet, his eyes moving to outside the windows "Or?" I frown leaning forward "You woke up at the right time Elena, I need your help" he only places his hands above mine, his eyes meeting with mine, I could almost melt at the sight I frown, "You're really being not forthcoming with this," I say the waitress stopping by to get our orders. He quickly notices his fingers over mine, withdrawing them immediately, but in my mind I want him to place them back, I enjoy the way my heart runs when his fingers touch mine "Or you marry me, Elena," he says his voice deep and inviting, his eyes locked intensely on mine, his hands clasped together, fingers intertwined as he leans forwardElena POV For once, the morning sunlight doesn’t feel like something to hide from. It slips across the sheets, warm and gentle, and I let my eyes open slowly instead of snapping awake in fear. Alex lies next to me, his arm draped over my waist, his hair mussed against the pillow. He looks younger like this, like the weight he carries all day finally lets go at night. My fingers almost move to trace the line of his jaw, but I stop, afraid to wake him. I stay still, watching the slow rise and fall of his chest. It shouldn’t matter to me this much, but it does, and that scares me because every minute I fall a little more for him is another minute I’m risking the plan I’ve clung to since the memories came rushing back. The plan that keeps me angry, sharp, and unbreakable. Except right now, staring at him, I don’t feel unbreakable. I feel… human. His eyes flutter open, lashes lifting heavy, and he catches me staring. “What?” he asks, voice thick with sleep, mouth quirking into a s
ELENA POV It starts in the kitchen. I’m barefoot, rummaging in the fridge for cold water after training with Sophia. Alex steps in, hair still damp from his shower, black dress shirt half-buttoned. “Looking for something?” he asks, voice low, a cot smile on his face from last night I glance over my shoulder hiding my blushing cheeks. “Just water.” He walks closer, his eyes dropping from my ponytail down the curve of my spine to the flush on my cheeks. “That’s all?” His tone makes something flutter in my chest. “Why?” I ask, turning, water bottle still in hand, my eyes confindently fixed in him. “Because you look like you need something else,” he murmurs, stepping closer, hand braced on the fridge door beside my head. Heat coils in my belly. “Like what?” He dips his head, lips brushing the shell of my ear. “Like this,” he whispers. Before I can react, his mouth catches mine. It’s soft for a moment, then deeper, rougher. My back presses into the cold steel, his hand sl
ALEXANDER POVThe door clicks shut behind me, and for a second, everything feels still quiet.I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding. It’s been three days, meetings, numbers, men who smile too easily and hide knives behind their backs. But the second I step into this house, it all falls away.Because she’s here.I hear her voice before I see her soft, hushed, coming from the living room and my chest tightens, Elena.I walk closer, rolling my suitcase behind me. She’s by the window, phone pressed to her ear, brow slightly furrowed. The light from the afternoon sun cuts across her face, catching the curve of her jaw, the faint pink in her cheeks. She sees me and stops talking mid sentence. Her eyes widen then soften, then something warmer, brighter. She ends the call so fast it’s almost clumsy. “Alex,” she breathes out, a small smile tugging at her lips. “Missed me already?” I tease, voice rougher than I mean it to be. She crosses the space between us, arms sliding aroun
ELENA POV The next morning, Alex leave for an urgent meeting in another state, he will be traveling for a few hours and he leaves a kiss on my forehead as I pretend to sleep before he closes the door behind him quietly I wake up sluggishly and Sophia bursts into my room without knocking, hair in a messy braid, sunglasses perched on her head. “Get dressed,” she orders, tossing a linen dress onto my bed. “For what?” I mumble, still half asleep. “An antique market,” she says. “You need sunlight before you start looking like a haunted painting.” “Rude,” I mutter with a smile, but I drag myself out of bed anyway. By noon, we’re wandering narrow aisles between cluttered stalls downtown. The city smells like coffee and exhaust, and everything feels alive in a way the mansion never quite does. Sophia picks up a chipped porcelain teacup. “This looks like your resting face,” she teases. I roll my eyes, but I’m laughing. “You’re impossible.” “Yet here you are,” she grins.
ELENA POV The morning after the beach, I half expect Alex to pull away. Maybe regret the kiss. Maybe remember why we kept our walls up in the first place. But he doesn’t. Instead, over breakfast, he asks almost too casually, if I want to come to a meeting with him at the docks. I’m still in my robe, hair damp from the shower, when I look up at him. “You mean actually come with you? As in, be there?” Alex sets down his coffee, lifts a brow. “That is what ‘come with me’ means, Elena.” My heart stutters, and I hate how obvious it must be on my face. “Yes,” I say, before I can second guess it. “Yes, okay.” We ride down together, windows tinted, Marco driving up front. The closer we get to the docks, the more Alex’s posture changes, a little straighter, a little harder around the edges. It should scare me, but it doesn’t. Somehow, I feel steadier beside him. Outside the car, the wind tastes of salt and diesel. A group of men in dark coats cluster near the containers, voices
ELENA POVAfter everything that happened, I should still be angry. After all the lies, after the secrets, after the night I overheard him say “I’m in love with her” when he thought I couldn’t hear, I should keep my distance but I simply can’t. For days, I keep seeing that moment in my head. The rough way he’d said it, like it hurt him to admit it. And I keep seeing Marco too, the suspicion in his eyes, the warning in his voice, like he knows in going to break his bosses heart. I tell myself it doesn’t matter. That it can’t. But each morning I wake up next to him, the wall I’ve built cracks just a little more and it scares me more than anything. One night, after he leaves for a meeting, I sit on the edge of our bed, staring at the dark window and fighting with myself. I want to test this feeling. To see if what we have is real or if it’ll shatter the second I reach for it. So I call Marco, my voice shaky as I ask him for help. “A beach?” Marco repeats, surprised. “Yes. S
