When I was done, he leaned back in his chair and tapped his fingers lightly on the desk. “And your family?” he finally asked. “I have no family members. “ I informed. “No one?” I shook my head slowly. "I had an accident in the year 2016 and I had a memory loss. No one came to the hospital to see me. It was in the hospital I met Anna, my best friend. Her family paid my hospital bills. I stayed with them for three years before I moved out from their place. ” “what is the name of the hospital?” he asked, his voice was calm but serious. My brows furrowed. “Why do you need to know that?” “Just answer,” he said firmly, leaving no room for argument. I swallowed and told him the name. He nodded slightly, as if making a mental note. “How old are you?” he asked next. “ Ughm.... I'm not sure, but I think, twenty-one.” The words slipped out before I could stop myself, and then, out of habit, I quickly added, “And you?” My eyes widened in shock at my own question. Heat rushed to my face and I squeezed my eyes shut in embarrassment. This is not a date, Rosalina! When I opened my eyes again, there was a small glint of amusement in his gaze. Maybe I was imagining it because, just as quickly, his face went cold again. “I… I’m sorry. That just came out,” I mumbled nervously. He only hummed, leaning back in his chair, his expression unreadable. When he didn’t answer me right away, my chest tightened. I forced myself to ask, “Am I safe here? Will you even help me? Because my friend said those people are so dangerous that even the police are scared of them.” “You are safe here, Roselina.” His voice was calm, almost too calm. “But how? Even the police are afraid of them. Are you… stronger than them?” I realized too late how foolish my question sounded. “Yes. They can’t touch you here.” “Why not?” I whispered, confused. “Because there is only one name they fear….the Romano Mafia.” Romano Mafia? The same one Anna had warned me about. The most powerful mafia across the States. Wait… what? I froze as I stared at him. My pulse quickened. “W-who are you? And where am I?” A faint smirk tugged at his lips. “I’m Christopher Romano. Leader of the Romano Mafia. And this… is my estate.” My stomach dropped. “N-no… this can’t be real.” I stumbled back as my eyes widened with panic. I had walked straight into the devil’s lair. I dashed toward the door and yank at the handle, but it wouldn’t budge. It was locked. My heart pounded as I turned around. “Let me out!” I cried. “Please, open the door!” “I told you that you are safe here,” he said firmly. “I don’t break my promises.” I shook my head wildly with tears stinging my eyes. “I don’t believe you. Please… just let me go.” He sighed, almost bored. “Step outside, and they will track you down before you make it ten minutes. You will be dead before the hour ends.” His words stopped me cold. My breath caught. If I leave I will die. But if I stay… can I really trust him not to hurt me? I pound the door with my fists. “Please! Open it!” A sharp exhale came from behind me. Suddenly, his hand clamped around my wrist, pulling me back. My spine hit the door as I gasped, staring up at him in terror. His eyes look into mine, cold and unyielding. “I said you are safe here. That is final.” His tone was low, edged with warning. A chill spread through me. My voice trembled. “I don’t trust you…” He tilted his head slightly. “I’m the only reason you are still breathing, Rosalina. I gave my word and I don’t go back on it.” My eyes blurred with tears. “Please… just let me go,” I whispered, my voice “Where do you think you will run to?” he asked, his voice calm but sharp. “I…I don’t know,” I admitted quietly with my throat dry. He studied me for a moment, then stepped back and called, “Sean.” The sound of a lock clicked, and the door creaked open. My heart leapt. Was he… letting me leave? I quickly moved aside as a tall man entered with his expression blank, almost robotic. “Sean,” Christopher said smoothly, “show her to one of the guest quarters downstairs.” “Yes, sir.” Sean’s voice carried the same emotionless tone. “What?” I blurted out. Is this man being serious right now? I told him I wanted to leave, so why are they showing me the guest room? “No! I’m not staying here.” Christopher didn’t even acknowledge me. “Take her away, Sean.” Sean motioned with his hand. “This way, ma’am.” “I’m not staying here!” I yelled with my voice shaking with defiance. Christopher’s jaw tightened as his dark eyes lock on me, and for a second I thought he might explode. Sean gave me a bewildered look, like I had just broken some unspoken rule. Christopher’s voice dropped to a low, dangerous murmur as he said to Sean, “Fine. let her leave.” Sean hesitated. “Sir… are you certain?” Christopher's head snapped toward him, his glare enough to silence any further questions. Sean lowered his gaze. “Of course, sir. I will do as you have commanded.” To be continuedROSALINA P.O.VThe car ride back from the party was the longest silence of my life. I sat as far away from Christopher as I could, pressing my shoulder against the cold glass of the window. My heart was still hammering against my chest. Anna. I couldn't get the image out of my head. My best friend—the only person who cared if I lived or died after my accident—was standing in a room full of monsters, talking to the enemy. She didn't look like a waitress. She looked like she belonged there.Beside me, Christopher was a statue of shadow and muscle. He hadn't said a word since we left the building. When we finally reached the mansion, the gates open. The car didn't stop at the main entrance. It drove around to the private side of the estate. Christopher stepped out and reached back, his hand wrapping around my wrist. It wasn't a gentle touch, but it wasn't painful either. It was a lock."Christopher, you're hurting me," I lied, just to see if he would let go.He didn't. He just looked at
He reached around and picked up a piece of fruit from my plate, popping it into his mouth."You are a Romano ward," he said. "And soon, the world will know that touching you is the same as touching me."He walked out of the room, leaving me alone with a table full of food I couldn't eat.I was no longer just a girl from a cafe. I was being pulled deeper and deeper into his dark world. I thought about the library, the sketch of the "little flower," and the way he held me last night. He was protecting me, but I knew his protection came with a price. I just didn't know yet if I was ready to pay it.I spent the afternoon moving my few things into his massive bedroom. It felt wrong to put my simple clothes next to his expensive suits. Every time I saw his bed, I remembered that I was supposed to sleep there now.As the sun began to set, Sean came to the door."Miss, Sir is going out," he said. "He says you are to come with him.""Where?" I asked."To a meeting," Sean said. "Wear something
ROSALINA P.O.VI woke up the next morning feeling very strange. For a second, I didn't remember where I was. The bed was too big, the sheets were too soft, and the smell in the air was different. It smelled like expensive wood and strong cologne. Then, it all came back to me. The basement. The traitors. The gunshots.I sat up quickly, looking around. I was still in Christopher’s bedroom. He wasn't there, but the spot on the other side of the bed was untouched. He hadn't slept at all.I walked over to the large mirror on the wall. I looked like a mess. My hair was wild, and my black sweater was covered in dust from climbing down the vine. I looked like a girl who had been through a war, but my eyes were different. They didn't look as scared as they did yesterday. There was a knock on the door. It wasn't the soft knock of a maid. It was hard and fast."Come in," I said.Sean walked in. He looked tired, and there was a bandage on his arm."Miss, Sir wants you downstairs," Sean said. His
Rosalina p.o.vI jumped, dropping the book and the paper. Christopher was standing in the doorway. He wasn't wearing his jacket anymore, and his shirt was unbuttoned at the top. He looked tired."I... I was just looking," I said, my heart racing. "I didn't mean to pry."He walked into the room, his eyes landing on the sketch on the floor. He picked it up and stared at it for a long time. His expression changed. It wasn't cold anymore. It was... sad."This belonged to my mother," he said, his voice barely a whisper."She was an artist?" I asked softly."She was many things," he said, putting the paper back into the book. "But this room was her favorite place. She used to sit here for hours.""Where is she now?"Christopher looked at me, and for a second, I thought he was going to tell me. But then the mask came back. His eyes turned hard again."She’s gone," he said shortly. "And you shouldn't be here. This part of the house is off-limits.""I'm sorry," I said, moving toward the door.
ROSALINA P.O.VI stayed in my room all morning, curled up on the bed. The sunlight coming through the window felt too bright, too happy for a place like this. My stomach made a noise, but I didn't want to eat. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Christopher’s face. I saw the way his eyes changed when I told him the truth.I’m a virgin.I never thought those words would be so hard to say. But saying them to a man like him felt like giving him a weapon. He was a monster, a mafia boss who killed people. Why did I care what he thought? But I did care. The way he looked at me before he walked out of the room... it wasn't just anger. It was something else. Shock? Confusion? It was the first time I had seen him look human, even for a second.A soft knock on the door made me jump."Go away," I said, my voice sounding weak even to my own ears. The door opened anyway. It wasn't Christopher. It was a young maid, the same one who had tried to bring me breakfast earlier. She looked nervous, her han
Christopher’s Point of ViewI walked out of her room, but I couldn’t walk out of what she said. Those words were stuck in my head like a sharp blade.I’m a virgin.I stopped halfway down the hallway, breathing hard. My chest was tight. I ran a hand through my hair, trying to think straight, but my mind was spinning.“She is lying,” I muttered under my breath. “She must be lying.”I laughed, but it came out broken. “A girl her age? Impossible.”Still, no matter how many times I said it, something inside me refused to believe the lie I was trying to tell myself.I turned and hit the wall hard with my fist. The sound echoed down the empty hall. My knuckles burned, but I didn’t care. Her face wouldn’t leave my mind. The way she looked at me when she said it. Her eyes had fear, but not a single trace of deceit. She wasn’t trying to trick me. She was just… scared.I cursed under my breath again. “Damn it, Rosalina.”I walked into my room and slammed the door. I need to think, but my head wa
