DELUCA

Lucas's expression darkened as he shrugged on his jacket. “What the hell happened?”

I strode toward the door, my mind racing. “He thinks he’s ready to stand on his own.”

Lucas followed me down the hall, his steps sharp and controlled. “Colton’s stubborn, but you know this isn’t about independence. It’s about pride.”

I pushed open the heavy door at the end of the hall, Marco already waiting at the curb with the car idling. “I know,” I muttered, sliding into the back seat. Lucas slipped in beside me without hesitation while Marco shut the door and moved to the driver’s seat.

As Marco navigated the city streets, my grip on the leather tightened. Colton was young, reckless — he didn’t understand the weight of the world I’d tried to protect him from. He didn’t realize that leaving meant exposing himself to enemies who wouldn’t hesitate to strike the moment they saw an opening.

Lucas’s gaze flicked toward me. “What are you going to say to him?”

I kept my eyes on the road ahead. “Tha

ELENA I noticed Mr. Leo beginning to panic, and I couldn’t blame him. He was probably wondering what would happen to his wife and children if anything happened to him.Despite his anxiety, he kept driving steadily, his knuckles white on the steering wheel.“Just keep driving, Mr. Leo,” I said softly. “Don’t alert whoever’s following us.”He gave a stiff nod, wiping sweat from his forehead even though the air conditioner was working perfectly. His tension was palpable, but I couldn’t let him give us away.As for me, I knew I had touched the tiger’s tail the moment I decided to investigate my late husband's death. And things only got worse when I refused the mafia elders’ decision for Dante to take over Lorenzo's business while I quietly stepped aside. That defiance had made me more enemies than I could count.I glanced back at the sleek black SUV trailing us, hoping they hadn’t noticed that we were aware of them. My mind raced until an idea clicked into place.“When we reach the next

ELENA I felt a quiet sense of satisfaction settle over me as I sank into the plush armchair. The day’s work had gone better than expected. I pulled off the wide-brimmed hat, the soft brush of the fabric against my fingertips grounding me. Reaching up, I slid out the pins securing my tight bun, letting my hair tumble down in loose waves. A relieved sigh slipped past my lips as I unfastened the buttons of my fitted jacket and shrugged it off, the cool air brushing against my heated skin.I needed to stay ahead of Dante Morreti. One step, maybe two, if I was smart enough. But there was one problem I couldn’t ignore—one name that tangled itself in my thoughts no matter how hard I tried to push it away.DeLuca Adrian. He wouldn’t be pleased when he found out I’d changed some of the staff at the casino. But then again, we’d never really had a proper conversation. He was too much of an asshole for that."Who’s an asshole?"Sarah’s voice cut through the quiet, light and teasing. I glanced up

ELENA.Sarah never ceases to amaze me. She's been dressing up for the past half hour, and I’ve already checked my wristwatch for what feels like the hundredth time. Maybe inviting her was a bad idea. I curse under my breath.Just as I’m about to lose my patience, I hear the soft click of heels against wood. I look up from my watch and see her descending the staircase, wearing a form-fitting pencil gown that hugs her curves perfectly. Her long brown hair cascades down her shoulders in soft waves, catching the light.“Wow,” I say, raising a brow as I give her a slow once-over. “Trying to seduce my old man?”“A girl’s gotta look good,” Sarah says, flicking her hair back with a practiced grace. She stops at the bottom of the stairs and extends her hand toward the door. “Shall we?”“Are you planning on going somewhere afterward?” I ask as she steps outside.“That depends,” she smirks, mischief dancing in her eyes.“On…?” I press.“If I meet a nice guy who sweeps me off my feet…” She pauses

ELENA THEN."Congratulations," the girl beside me said, her voice light and friendly. She had short, dark curls framing her delicate face—slim, model-like features that made her look effortlessly chic."Thanks," I replied, offering her a wide smile. We’d never spoken before, so her sudden friendliness caught me a bit off guard."Visiting Paris and participating in Fashion Week is one of my dreams. You’re so lucky," she said with a wistful smile.I returned her smile politely, glancing around the dressing room. The other girls were seated in pairs, talking and laughing quietly among themselves. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that their eyes kept drifting toward me. Whispered conversations, subtle glances.I pulled out my phone and started scrolling, trying to ignore the weight of their stares."When are you leaving?" the girl asked again, still smiling at me."We haven’t finalized it yet," I replied, my eyes fixed on the screen.Just then, the room fell eerily silent. A sudden shift

DELUCAI pushed through the heavy double doors of the venue, my steps quick and controlled. The soft hum of conversation and clinking of glasses barely registered over the sharp pounding in my chest. My jaw tightened as I scanned the room, the low lighting casting a golden glow over the sleek marble floors and crystal-draped chandeliers. Round tables were set with precision, the rich scent of fresh roses and expensive champagne hanging in the air.Lucas trailed at my side, his hands tucked casually in his pockets. He didn’t need to say a word for me to know he was amused. The slight lift of his brow and the curve of his lips said it all.“This way, sir,” a staff member said, gesturing toward the front. I barely spared them a glance as I moved toward the table I had selected earlier that day. Front row. Centered. The perfect vantage point. Close enough that she’d see me. Close enough that I wouldn’t miss a single detail.I pulled out the chair and sat down, my back straight, shoulders

DELUCA "Looks like your focus has changed. Or maybe… your interests have.”The voice sliced through me like a knife, sharp and deliberate. My grip tightened around the stem of my glass as I turned toward the sound.Camila stood at the edge of the table, her dark brown eyes gleaming beneath the soft glow of the overhead lights. Her long, chestnut hair cascaded down her back in loose waves, framing her sculpted cheekbones and full lips, which curved into a knowing smile. A figure-hugging black dress clung to her body, the plunging neckline and high slit leaving little to the imagination. Gold hoop earrings caught the light as she tilted her head, her gaze fixed on me with unsettling familiarity. She took a step closer, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor. Then she slid into the seat beside Lucas, her manicured hand brushing over his arm as she leaned in and pressed a lingering kiss to his cheek.“Which is it?” she asked, her eyes narrowing slightly as they cut toward me.

ELENA.Surprising even myself, I moved toward Lucas—DeLuca’s friend—and pressed a quick peck to his cheek. There was something effortlessly charming about him, something that, for a fleeting moment, reminded me of Sarah. I adjusted my bag, preparing to leave before she could utter another. I had every intention of ignoring her first remark, acting as if I hadn’t heard it.But then she spoke again.“He’ll dump you like he did the rest,” the woman with long chestnut hair said, this time addressing me directly.I froze mid-step. The exhaustion I had felt moments ago evaporated, replaced by a sharp, simmering irritation. Slowly, I turned to face her, stepping forward with deliberate intent.DeLuca and Lucas both watched me, their expressions unreadable.“You mean the way he dumped you?” I asked, tilting my head, my tone laced with cutting amusement. Her dark brown eyes glimmered with a smug sort of pride. “Oh, sweetheart, you got that part of the story wrong. I left him, by the way.”I sc

ELENA.As soon as I got back to the house, Sarah began to question me on how the event went. “You know, if you wanted to know so much, you should have gone” I cut her off as I pushed open my bedroom door and walked in, going straight to the vanity stand to begin dismantling all the armor Sarah had put on me before I left. “Like that's ever gonna happen, I mean imagine the tension but I'll go the next time though. I'd love to see you walk. Now spill” I Iaughed at her eager look before walking to the door and pulling it open. “You don't mean it?” She gave me a fake offended look even as she walked past me and out of the room. “Good night Sarah” I chuckled at the tongue she stuck out at me before I closed the door. “This is not over yet” I heard her tell from the other side of the door before her retreating footsteps filled my ears. I was so exhausted and didn't have the strength nor the energy for anything this evening. My eyes went towards the pink box Dante had given me the othe

ELENA Sarah was already bouncing around the room, holding up two completely opposite dresses and asking which looked more “Saturday-slay” appropriate. I gave her a small smile as she spun toward the mirror, already lost in her fashion world. I admire that about her—how she could simply live in the moment, find something beautiful in the middle of chaos.“Text me when you get to the store,” I said softly.“I will,” she replied, pausing in her whirlwind of activity to glance at me. “You sure you don’t want to come?”“I need to check on Dad,” I murmured, glancing at my phone. “And figure out what I’m wearing to this… ridiculous event.”She gave me a quick hug and a knowing smile before grabbing her purse and slipping out the door. The silence she left behind hit me harder than expected.I sank onto the edge of the bed and called Dad. The line clicked once, then twice, before his voice came through—sleep-rough, but steady.“Elena?”“Hey,” I said, trying to sound upbeat. “Just checking on

DELUCA We had gotten down to the location, the insistent beeping of the GPS tracker as we drove down the secluded highway indicated that Colton was still on the move but was getting considerably slower than before, his gas must have been giving up on him.It soon came to a stop and I felt my heartbeat increase as fear racked through my whole body, I couldn't fail in protecting him, not this time at least.I urged the car to go more faster by stepping on the accelerator and was soon flying down the streets, cutting down corners as I followed the map and soon the sound of shooting began to fill my ears and fear clenched it's fist around my heart as I felt a rapid headache begin to form behind my eyelids.Arriving at the destination and finding shots being fired at Colton's blue truck had my blood boiling as I immediately pulled out my gun, rolled down the side of my glass window and just as they turned to check up on what was happening, I shot one straight to the skull and heard curses

ELENA I growled loudly as I flung the box against the wall, rage pulsing through my veins. This had been my one chance to get something—anything—to move forward, and it turned out to be a lousy prank?Dante was really testing me, pushing my limits just to see how far my patience would stretch.I had never felt such a mix of fury and resolve to make him pay. A dark thought kept circling in my mind—what if he had something to do with my late husband’s death? But too many pieces of the puzzle didn’t fit, and the frustration was eating me alive.I’d been here before—frustrated, running in circles, grasping at straws, hoping for a clue, anything to advance my investigation. And now, this? This was all I had to show for my effort? It made me feel like I was failing—like I was disappointing my late husband—and the thought tore painfully at my chest."Hey, you good?" came a voice from the door.I spun around to see Sarah standing there. I had forgotten to close the door when I came in. She l

DELUCA My fingers drummed a random beat on the table in my office as I sat lost in thought. I wondered just how far I’d have to go to repay the debt Elena was collecting from me.She was still in the dark about the vile dealings of her late bastard of a husband, and while I didn’t want to hurt her, she deserved the truth. Why it had to be me who told her—I was beginning to resent that part. I’d tried to delay sending the package I promised, but it was inevitable. I had to follow through soon or it would count as reneging on a debt owed."You good?" filtered into my ears, and I sighed deeply, palming my face as a headache started to creep in.Lucas whistled lowly with a smirk. It never took him long to figure out what was going on with me. I wasn’t surprised."I don't see the problem here," he began."But I do," I cut him off quickly."What do you see as the prob—""Me!" I exclaimed, pausing before continuing. "Why does it have to be me who sends the package?""Because you should...?"

ELENA Once again, I was playing with fire. Tracing my fingers along the shelves, I hoped to find something—anything—that could give me a clue or some knowledge about what led to my late husband's death.I was getting frustrated as I neared the end. With a sigh, I slammed my palms against the shelf in anger, sending dust particles flying into the air, which made me cough softly.I was angry at hitting another dead end. Deluca was taking his sweet time sending the package he promised, and since that last time at the casino, I hadn't seen him again. It felt like he was starting to avoid me, and I couldn’t understand what I had done to warrant such behavior.A click echoed through the silent office, and I ducked quickly, praying I was fast enough not to be shot. For a moment, nothing happened. But when I raised my head to check, I saw a small square hole in the shelf where I had slammed my hands—inside it was a small box.Glancing around cautiously, I pulled it out and dusted it off. Aft

DELUCA The past few days had been indescribable—chaotic activities, quiet betrayals, eyes watching from every shadow. But tonight, the air tasted different. Clean. Cold. Like the city was offering me a moment to breathe. I took it.I never liked others handling my business. Not even my own men. If it wasn’t me or Lucas, it always felt like a risk—like giving someone else the blade and hoping they didn’t slip it between your ribs. That thought was still lingering when I saw the telltale glow of blue and red flashing in my mirrors. A cop’s flashlight cut through the darkness ahead like a spotlight on a stage. I slowed the SUV, jaw tight, knuckles resting calm on the wheel. The flashing lights didn’t rattle me.I’d seen enough of them in my lifetime to know what they meant—this wasn’t a warning, and it sure as hell wasn’t a war. No, this was theater. A flex. A performance meant to shake cages and remind people like me that the law was still watching.Problem was—I didn’t shake.I steppe

ELENA The day I married Lorenzo and the four years I spent with him, I truly believed my nightmares were finally over.My dad had slowly begun to come out of the shell he had built around himself—a shell formed from the pain of losing my mother. I never thought I’d see him smile again, yet somehow, Lorenzo made that possible. He became the son my father never had. I thought buying us a house was the sweetest thing Lorenzo could’ve done… but no, he stole my heart over and over again—especially with how he carved out time from his busy schedule just to visit my dad and keep him company.I looked down at the ten-year-old boy in front of me, playing quietly with his toys.“He’s adorable, isn’t he?” came a soft voice beside me. I quickly wiped the corner of my eyes and turned to see one of the caregivers.“Yes… he is,” I replied, lowering myself to his level, watching him with gentle affection.“We’re really going to miss him,” she said, her voice tinged with emotion.“What do you mean?”

ELENA Fuck...This didn't yield anything more than I already knew. Deluca still sat before me, his eyes never leaving mine, as thoughts ran through my head in a scattered but understandable form.He tilted his head to the side with a small grin as he watched me, and I sighed under my breath without breaking eye contact. He knew exactly what he was doing, and it irritated me as much as it intrigued—and repulsed—me."You have guts, talking to an Elder that way," he began, and I hissed."He didn't tell me anything I didn't already know," I said, making sure to stare him down. He understood what I was saying because, the next thing I knew, he straightened up—his eyes turning cold."You want payback for your help," he stated, not asked, and I made no move to nod. But I was confused—why was he suddenly so different from just ten minutes ago?His personality changes were too fast to follow."What do you want?" he questioned, crossing his legs and placing his palms on his knees."I want all

DELUCA Staring down the bastard I had once called father in my early years, I felt nothing but rage and anger. How dare he do such a thing? He had the audacity to kidnap Colton and send Kane into a coma just to get a reaction from me — absurd in its entirety."What do you think you're doing?" I asked, my voice deathly cold and detached as I glared at him, anger bubbling in my chest, burning me from the inside as the urge to hit him swelled and threatened to tip over.I had spent my early years searching for approval from this scum who had merely donated the sperm that made me.What was I thinking? That he would somehow turn a new leaf...?"Colton, isn’t it? You've let him be your weakness. Pity. You shouldn't have one," he smirked at me.I pulled out my gun and fired, watching him flinch as fear clouded his gaze — only to vanish when he realized the bullet had hit the sofa beside his head, not him."If I wanted you dead, you would be dead.
