Chapter 5

**Riya**

I stayed in the suite until 7:40.

Not because I was making a point. Because every time I thought about walking downstairs I felt the weight of the house pressing against my ribs. Thick walls. Quiet corridors. Restricted floors. A text that still sat on my phone like a threat I couldn’t block.

*No joke. Sleep light.*

I had checked the number three more times. Nothing. No reverse lookup. No social media trail. Just a dead end and that single reply.

At 7:45 I forced myself into the shower. The water pressure was perfect. The towels were thicker than any I had ever owned. I hated how easily my body accepted the luxury while my mind stayed braced for the next blow.

I ignored the new clothes in the closet and put on one of my own dresses. Black. Simple. The same one I had worn to the Tower. It felt like the last piece of my old life I still controlled.

At 7:58 I left the suite.

The hallway was empty. The lights were low and warm. Somewhere below, soft classical music played at a volume that felt deliberate. I took the stairs slowly, counting each one, listening for other footsteps. There were none.

Mrs. D’Souza appeared at the bottom as if she had been waiting.

“This way, Miss Kapoor.”

She led me through the entrance hall and into a dining room that could have seated twenty. Only two places were set. One at the head of the long table. One to its right. Crystal. White china. Heavy silver. A single low arrangement of white flowers that looked like it had never been touched by human hands.

Aryan was already seated.

He looked up when I entered. No smile. Just that same calm assessment, like he was checking whether I had followed instructions.

“You’re on time,” he said.

“You said not to be late.”

He gestured to the chair on his right. I sat. The distance between us was polite and still too close. I could smell his cologne again. Dark. Expensive. The same one from the office.

A server appeared, poured wine I didn’t ask for, and disappeared without a word. Another placed the first course in front of us and vanished just as quietly.

We ate in silence for several minutes.

I kept my eyes on my plate. Every sound felt amplified. The soft clink of silver against china. The faint tick of a clock somewhere in the room. The controlled rhythm of his breathing.

Finally he spoke.

“Your father is comfortable. The attending physician says his pain management is already improved.”

I looked up. “Thank you.”

“It wasn’t a favor. It was part of the agreement.”

“Still. Thank you.”

He studied me over the rim of his glass. “You’re thinner than the measurements I was given. The stylist will adjust.”

“I brought my own clothes.”

“I noticed.” His gaze flicked over the black dress once, then returned to my face. “Wear what you like inside the house. Outside, you’ll dress to the standard expected of my wife. The closet exists for a reason.”

There it was. The first quiet order that had nothing to do with debt or signatures.

I set my fork down. “And if I refuse?”

“Then you’ll be underdressed at events where appearance is not optional. I don’t recommend testing how that reflects on both of us.”

He said it without heat. Without threat. Just fact. That made it worse.

The next course arrived. I barely tasted it.

“The restricted floors,” I said. “Why?”

Aryan’s expression didn’t change. “Because they are restricted. The third floor contains private offices and meeting rooms. The basement contains security and storage. Neither concerns you.”

“I’m living here for three years. Everything in this house concerns me.”

He set his glass down with deliberate care. “No. You are living under my protection and under the terms of a contract. That does not make you entitled to every room. Curiosity is understandable. Acting on it would be unwise.”

The word *unwise* landed heavier than any raised voice could have.

I held his gaze. “Someone texted me the day I moved in. ‘Welcome to the family, Mrs. Rajvansh.’ Then, when I asked who it was: ‘No joke. Sleep light.’”

Something very small shifted in his eyes. Not surprise. Recognition.

“I see.”

“Do you know who sent it?”

“I’ll look into it.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only one you’re getting tonight.” He leaned back slightly. “Finish your meal, Riya. You’re safe inside these walls. That message changes nothing about the arrangement.”

Safe.

The word felt wrong in this dining room.

We finished in near silence. When the last plate was cleared he stood. I did the same.

“Breakfast is available from seven onward,” he said. “Mrs. D’Souza will show you the morning routine if you want it. Otherwise, your time is your own until I require otherwise. There is a dinner on Tuesday. You’ll attend. Details will be sent to your phone.”

He walked me as far as the staircase. Stopped.

“One more thing.”

I waited.

“The locks on your suite are for your privacy, not your imprisonment. But the external doors and the gate are monitored. If you leave the property, security will know. If you take a car, it will be one of mine. These are not suggestions.”

I met his eyes. “Am I a wife or a prisoner?”

Aryan’s mouth almost curved. Almost.

“You’re whichever one keeps you alive and the contract intact. Try not to force me to demonstrate the difference.”

He turned and walked toward the rear of the house without waiting for a reply. I watched him go until he disappeared through a door I hadn’t noticed before.

Then I climbed the stairs alone.

Back in the suite I locked the door, sat on the edge of the bed, and pulled out my phone.

No new messages.

I opened the old thread anyway and stared at the last line.

*No joke. Sleep light.*

Somewhere below me, deep in the house, another door closed. Soft. Final.

I left the bedside lamp on when I finally lay down.

Sleep did not come easy.

Chapter 11 AryanThe car stopped at the private entrance.I stepped out first, then turned and offered Riya my hand. She took it without hesitation. The contact was brief, practical, but I felt the slight coolness of her fingers against mine before she released them. Security opened the glass doors. The lobby of the tower was all pale stone and quiet power, the kind of space designed to remind people who belonged and who did not.Riya walked beside me as if she had been doing it for years. We took the private elevator to the thirty-second floor. The silence inside was dense. I watched her reflection in the mirrored wall—chin level, shoulders set, expression unreadable. Whatever fear she had carried the night before was locked down now. I respected the control even as it unsettled me.The elevator doors opened onto the executive floor. An aide was already waiting.“They’re all inside,” he said quietly. “Your uncle arrived twenty minutes early.”Of course he had.I placed a hand at the

Chapter 10 AryanI kept seeing her the way she had been at the beginning. The first night, when she signed the contract with hands that still shook. The way her eyes had tracked every exit in the room as if she expected the walls to close in. The quiet, almost desperate calculation behind every answer she gave me—how much this would cost her, how long she could last, whether the money was worth the cage. She had looked like a woman who had already decided the world was dangerous and was only trying to survive the next hour. Then the dinner. The message. The car ride home while she tried not to shake. And now, less than twenty-four hours later, she was downstairs in my study reading the names of the people who wanted her gone, deciding she would learn them until she could recite them in her sleep. The speed of the change unsettled me more than the threat itself.I did not sleep. After I left her in the study, I went back to my rooms and stood at the window for a long time, watching th

**Chapter 9** **Riya**I didn’t sleep. The gown lay discarded on the chair like shed skin. I sat on the edge of the bed in the dark silk robe Isabel had left folded in the closet, knees drawn up, phone face-down on the nightstand as if distance could make the words less real.*You wear the dress well. Does he know someone in this room wants you gone?*Every time I closed my eyes I saw the long table, the ice-blonde woman’s polite smile, the way Aryan’s hand had tightened over mine until the bones ached. Someone had been close enough to watch me wear the dress. Close enough to enjoy the fact that I would read those words while still seated beside him.A soft knock came at 6:12 a.m.I didn’t answer. The door opened anyway.Aryan stepped inside already dressed—black shirt, sleeves rolled once, the same heavy watch. He looked like he had never needed sleep in his life. His gaze moved over the untouched bed, the gown, me.“You didn’t sleep.”“Neither did you.”He closed the door and stay

Chapter 8RiyaTuesday moved too slowly and then all at once.I spent most of the day in the suite. The stylist came at four, fixed my hair into something soft and expensive, did my makeup until my own face looked like a better-funded version of itself. The black gown waited on the bed like a verdict. At 7:20 I was ready. The woman in the mirror didn’t look like the girl from Queens who had counted hospital bills on a kitchen counter. She looked like someone who belonged on Aryan Rajvansh’s arm. I hated how easily the transformation had worked. At 7:28 the knock came.Aryan stood in the hallway in a black tuxedo that made everything about him sharper. No tie. Black shirt open at the throat. The same heavy watch. He looked at me once, slow, from the hem of the gown up to my face.Something unreadable moved behind his eyes.“You look the part,” he said.“That was the point, wasn’t it?”He didn’t answer. He just stepped aside so I could walk out, then offered his arm. Not gently. Not rom

Chapter 7RiyaMonday arrived with a knock at 1:00 p.m. sharp.Mrs. D’Souza stood in the hallway with a woman I had never seen before. Mid-thirties. Sharp bob. Black clothes that looked like they cost more than my old rent. She carried two large garment bags and a tablet.“This is Isabel,” Mrs. D’Souza said. “She’ll handle the fittings for tomorrow evening.”Isabel stepped inside without waiting for an invitation and started unpacking like she owned the suite.I stayed by the window.“I already have clothes.”Isabel didn’t look up. “You have clothes. You don’t have the right clothes for a Rajvansh dinner. There’s a difference.”She held up a floor-length black gown. Simple on the hanger. Dangerous once it caught the light.“This one first.”I hated that it was beautiful.I hated even more that it fit like it had been made for me.Isabel worked fast. Pins. Adjustments. Quiet comments about posture and hem length. She never asked what I wanted. She only asked what Mr. Rajvansh preferred

Just deliberate footsteps that stopped for a second too long before continuing.By the time I sat up, the corridor was quiet again. The bedside lamp was still on. I had left it that way on purpose. My phone showed 6:47 a.m. No new messages. The old thread was still there, untouched. No joke. Sneakers.Armor that didn’t look like armor.Mrs. D’Souza had said I could visit my father whenever I wanted. I decided to test that. The garden-level suite was easy to find. Two nurses in soft gray scrubs looked up when I entered. One of them smiled.
