The sky was blue when a woman on her lab coat exited from the hospital building. As she returned with a cup of iced coffee, the bright sun was restrained to shine with the dark clouds emerging–as if it foreshadows the following events that will happen.
“That’s weird…” Doctor Georgia whispered and stopped as she stared at the darkening clouds through the glass. Bad premonition started to build up. She didn't know exactly where that feeling came from–it just emerged along with the dark clouds as if a warning sign.
Before she could dig into that feeling, a generated voice from the large screen distracted her.
“We have a new face in the top five public figures with the highest gross income!” It was an advertisement. Intrigued, Georgia squinted her eyes waiting to see this new face. In fact, this is news. For three consecutive years, five names were always found in the top five.
So, who could this new face be that chose to break the list?
“Let’s welcome, Primo Bonsignore, a businessman–the president of Prime Innova Corporation, a Global Recognition Award nominee–” before the generated voice could make endless list of this new man's achievements, a female nurse–that emerged out of nowhere–cut the doctor’s attention.
“Doc, we need you at the operating room–as soon as possible!” the nurse with a name on her tag, Lily, panicked as she called her. Georgia rushed toward her in a second, agitated by the sudden call.
“What happened?” worry etched on the face of the doctor. Consequently, the nurse answered and didn't leave any details behind. To put her words into short, the old man, who was just mended from cardiac arrest, was rushed to the operating room right after his doctor located a rupture in his heart when he collapsed. Considering the seriousness in his condition, the patient needs an immediate operation…
Whose job will be now onto Georgia, a surgeon. Run and run, they didn't waste a second, as a person's time gets closer to death. The iced coffee she bought ended up wasted, just not this life on the line.
“Scalpel.” Covered by medical uniform, Georgia raised her left hand.
Heart rupture. Georgia had encountered a lot of patients with the same condition that she operated already. But with time is of the essence, no matter how Georgia is good–or even an expert of it, every second is a critical time.
But then, thanks to the gift of the heaven, the operation ended smoothly. That was five hours and thirty-three minutes.
“You never fail to amaze me, Doc!” praise from the same nurse who called her earlier, ensued as they exited from the operating room disinfected and cleaned.
“I've been receiving the same praise since you started here last week, Nurse Lily.” Georgia chuckled. “You’ll get used to it soon.” Georgia casted a glance to her direction and saw her smiling timidly–which eventually turned into a look of tease when Lily’s eyes caught a man’s presence by the corner.
“Oops, I'm good to go from here! It’s your lovey-dovey time, Doc, I guess.” Giggling, Nurse Lily left, only then for her to notice the person that pressed the demeanor of the nurse.
“Sweetie…” The man called softly as he stretched his arms wide open. Like her, he's also on a lab coat, standing tall by the corner. Hearing that voice that Georgia fell in love with, the energy left in her body gradually diminished. With her face etched with a smile, Georgia ran toward his direction for an embrace, feeling the comfort and calmness from the touch.
“Ah, finally…rest.” Georgia rested on his fiancé's chest named, Lawrence Jordan, who’s also a surgeon like her. But then, Georgia quickly withdrew her head to look up to him when she was reminded by something.
“Didn't you also have operation today?” she asked, emerging the sweetness in her voice that wasn't revealed when she talked to the nurse. Georgia stared at his brown eyes with her hands still wrapped around his body.
“Just finished. I think we went in the separate operating room at the same time–I saw you rushing earlier.” Lawrence replied and smiled.
“You did?” surprised, the woman asked to which he nodded slowly.
“I even saw how the coffee was quickly discarded.” Lawrence teased and laughed, while Georgia just had the moment of realization about that coffee.
“Right, my coffee!” she exclaimed with her siren eyes circling, unwrapping her hands around him.
“It was all ice when I found it, Sweetie. Let's buy another one instead.” Lawrence initiated as he gently picked her thin fingers, plastering a wide smile on the face of his fiancee. With that, they have quickly decided to go to the nearby cafe that Georgia went to earlier, with her arm wrapped around his.
They were striding their way through the revolving glass, when Lawrence suddenly took a halt that cease Georgia from walking. A moment of realization hit the man as his hand cupped the pockets on his coat.
“I forgot my wallet…” Lawrence brushed his fingers through his hair at the thought. “I left it on my office…” While Lawrence felt agitated, Georgia just smiled at him and said,
“Don't worry, I have my wallet with me.” She assured him, but the man just shook his head in protest.
“No. I invited you, so it should be on me. You can wait for me, right?” Lawrence insisted, which Georgia found non-negotiable. With the same smile, she ended up nodding at him. “Alright. Just order the foods upon waiting, while I go back to my office. I’m gonna be quick.” Lawrence stated and winked at her before turning his back to sprint back to the building.
It was really just fine for her to take the bills–she got no issues with it, since she’s always ready to spend money for her man. On the other side, Georgia have known his fiance for three years already. And that was one of the things that she couldn't do anything with. If Lawrence initiates, he wouldn't let Georgia spend anything for him.
She understands that trait of him deeply. So now, she’s on her way to the cafe, although she had to take a stop on the pedestrian lane to avoid jaywalking. While waiting for the lights to turn red, Georgia enjoyed the time by humming. It was seconds left for her turn to walk through.
The sky was still a little dark. And the time on the traffic lights is getting exhausted to zero. Finally, it’s the turn for her two minutes. She started to walk through the white lines as her eyes fixated on the cafe at the opposite side. All of a sudden, her phone rang, halting her in the middle of the road in a second.
“Hmm?” she answered the call from Lawrence, and walked again.
“I’ve heard about the new coffee on their menu, Sweetie. I would love to try it instead of my usual order!” Lawrence’ voice was vivid with excitement, curving her lips.
“Got it!” excited, Georgia ran the remaining distance from the lane, until something beyond the realm of her imaginations happened.
A black driving van from the right side appeared out of nowhere. The two minutes wasn’t yet done, but the black van was bold enough to pass through the pedestrian lane. As she turned her head to that direction, she saw the opened door in a split of a second, only to realize later what was about to happen.
Everything happened so quickly that she got no chance to think of ways to surviving–but to end up getting grabbed by the person inside the van, defenseless and clueless.
The next thing she knew that happened was her consciousness weakening. Perhaps, it was the dark clouds and her bad premonition were all about.
Three weeks later, Georgia began spending her time rightfully–in a way that could help her in the future. She was firm in her decision. She didn’t bend and didn’t back down. She gave justice to her agreement with Heinrich–she completely separated herself from them. Sweats started to bulge in her skin, soaking her tank top–it felt like she was bathing with her own sweat. Georgia took a break at first and chased her breath. She took the boxing gloves off of her hand and gently threw her body on the edge of the ring–enough not to bounce. “Here!” All of a sudden, she heard a woman’s voice behind her. It was Lily who threw her a bottle of water. Fortunately, she managed to catch it with her one hand.“Thankies!” Georgia exclaimed and drank the entire bottle in one go. Lily couldn’t help but to get impressed at the sight. A chuckle escaped from Georgia’s lips when she heard a slow clap from her.“Damn. You’re so locked in, doc!” Lily commented. She kind of found her cool! The pose and the
“I’m so sorry, Primo…” Those four words escaped from Georgia’s mouth as her eyes looked at Primo who was unconsciously lying on the bed while being connected to the apparatus. She was inside his private room, but she still remained closer to the door. She couldn’t get closer to him. She was afraid. It felt like she didn’t have the rights, so she remained a considerable distance between them.Thankfully, the two guards guarding the private room approved her for coming in. She was indeed thankful, but this was all she could do. Watch him in a distance. Watching him was already a challenge to her heart. She was afraid that she might back down, she might dissolve her agreement with Heinrich, and… she might get deluded by her own feelings just to be a nuisance to Primo again. She couldn’t take that risk. Georgia somehow knew where she would draw the line–she was completely aware, that was why she was away from him, though in the same space with him. He felt so close to her, yet so far. She
Georgia hasn’t faced them yet, but she was already stunned to hear Manuel’s voice. It was the guilt that crawled into her skin. She felt ashamed to even face them. Georgia just stood frozen, as she felt their presence getting closer to their direction. In response to Manuel, Heinrich just raised his arm, showing them the bandages on his arm. Then, Georgia heard a woman’s chuckle–it was Jennifer.“Seriously, huh? It’s surprising to see your conscience after you fucked us up.” Jennifer muttered as she stood beside Georgia who still couldn’t move. She felt ashamed to turn her head to her direction. She didn’t even know what to do. Until, she felt her gazes landing on her through her peripheral vision. “What happened?” Jennifer asked, obviously directed to her. Worry etched on her face, while shame plastered on Georgia’s. She didn’t answer. She didn’t move. If it were on a text message, she just left her in read. Georgia swallowed the lump in her throat, until her attention was diverted
Since another coincidence arose, Georgia ended up being in the passenger’s seat in Kris’ car. She just learned that this guy is the owner of that cafe near the hospital which was why he visits to do his morning routine inspection. It came as a surprise to her. The possibility that he was the owner of that cafe didn’t even cross her mind. Well, she has already got a lot of things on her plate to even mind about that.Surprisingly, this Kris guy was like a chatterbox. Even while driving, he didn’t stop sharing various things with her. Witnessing him like that, it became another surprising fact that she learned about him. But that chattering has to end now as they were already in their destination. Kris brought her right in front of the hospital first before heading to his cafe.Georgia told her thanks and then bid her farewell to him in an instant. As the car finally went off, Georgia averted her eyes to the establishment. The fear that was suppressed earlier due to Kris’ presence, now
Is it really something to freak out for? What is it to her if Primo didn’t reach her out? What if she didn’t see his name on her notification? Does it change anything? Does it change her decision to cut his ties completely with him? No. Definitely, not. Whether Primo called her or not, it doesn’t change anything. Hence, Georgia just ended up letting out a heavy sigh. Then, she blocked the contact numbers of those people associated with Primo and also Primo’s number itself. She blocked them all without a single hint of hesitation. The sun has already risen and her phone was the first thing she ever checked. A part of her hoped that she would see his name on her notification. To her dismay, not a name of Primo ever showed. Perhaps, she was just right about blocking him.She was about to throw away her phone and get up from the bed to wash her face, when her eyes suddenly caught a glimpse of that particular message from Lily. A new message from her, sent just a few minutes ago. Lily’s m
It is something that Georgia has to do, even if it causes her pain in her heart. But it will soon heal, right? That’s what keeps Georgia going–the thought that the pain will heal on its own. This will pass. It’s just a temporary pain. This won’t last. It won’t sting if she put her mind away from it. “Heinrich…” Georgia called as she was about to get into the car that they had provided for her. The sun was about to sink in the horizon, wrapping up the day. She didn’t know where she was. This place didn’t look like the CBF headquarters, either. Well, it would be risky for Heinrich there. Unlike the CBF that resided in a remote area, this place is right in the city–itt would be right to say on the border of the city. The building they brought her isn’t as enormous as CBF, neither as luxurious, too. In fact, this building almost looked like an abandoned establishment. Georgia turned around and looked at Heinrich, who was waiting for something she has to say. “Can you… at least tell me
