The lab smelled like copper and cleaning solution when I walked in and found Kai standing over the containment unit where we kept the serum. He had his back to me but I knew something was off by the way his shoulders were hunched and how his hands moved too quickly over the controls.

"What are you doing," I said and it was not a question because I already knew and my gut was twisting.
