I stood in the hallway outside the lab for three minutes before I pushed the door open. Three minutes of listening to them argue and hearing things I was not supposed to hear and understanding exactly what they had been planning for me all along.

The smell hit me first when I walked in. Copper and chemicals and something else underneath that made my stomach turn. Then I saw the blood on the floor and followed it back to where the narrator was kneeling with one hand pressed against their stomach and the other braced on the concrete to keep from falling over.

Kai was at the storage unit with his back to both of us and his hands were moving through equipment like nothing was wrong. Like there was not a person bleeding out ten feet behind him.

"What happened here," I said and my voice came out flat because I was trying to keep everything inside from spilling out.
