Chapter 54

Eva's Pov

I didn't lower my hands. My heart was a fist pounding against my ribs.

"Turn around. Slowly."

I turned. I was scared out of my wits. Didn't know what I was expecting, but turned.

A guard stood ten feet away, his gun aimed at my chest. His face was stone and his finger was on the trigger.

"I'm sorry," I said to the guards.

I closed my eyes, expecting the worst, only to raise my head and discover it was Victor.I ran towards him immediately, but before I could get close, he stretched his hands out to me."Eva." Chapter 53Eva's Pov…I opened my eyes and struggled to my feet from the ground. My heart pulsed. I had thought today was my end. I looked around the room blindly."Who's there?" My voice cracked, I braced myself for whatever that was and whoever touched me."Hello…" I had expected the ladies from earlier to follow me into the room, but they didn't and then, at that moment, I heard a small sound, it sounded like a sniffle."Hello?" I called again and reached out. My hand touched a hair, it was soft and braided."Please don't hurt me." A child's voice begged. It cracked, I could feel her shaking."I won't." I pulled back. "I'm not... I'm not one of them.""Everyone says that, before they report me to the lord." I blinked, trying to see, and slowly, I was able to make out a small shape, curled against the wall. Something moved beside her… it was a cat, an orange cat and its eyes glowed in the dark."I'm Eva." My voice was barely a whisper. "What's your name?""Lily." She swallowed and

Chapter 52Eva's PovI bolted toward the door once she said those words. No. I couldn't stay here. Not one more minute, or one more breath. I didn't mind leaving with Victor, doing his bidding, but not here.I moved fast despite the bandage pulling at my stomach.Christy, she didn't even notice me leaving. One second she had just finished speaking to me and the next second her eyes were closed, and her lips were moving like she was praying or counting. Whatever it was, I couldn't tell.I reached for the door and turned the handle. It opened, thank goodness. Outside, the hallway was empty. I had expected to see Victor and the doctor. It hadn't even been thirty seconds since they left the room. I wanted to beg him not to leave without me. But he wasn't there. My mind went back to the dead girls, killed brutally. "Hey, you shouldn't be out there."Christy's voice suddenly called from inside. How had I forgotten about her existence so fast? Without thinking, I turned the lock from outsid

Chapter 51 En route, the car stopped. The engine died, but it was a saving grace to me. This was my opportunity to escape Victor. I didn't have any option anymore. I'd rather be in the woods than be with him. Before I could brace myself, something slammed into the side of the SUV. Metal screeched. "Shit," I cried, as my stomach jammed against the car seat. I looked back. The second vehicle had rolled to a stop, its front tire blown. A guard stumbled out, clutching his arm. Then the third car. The same thing. "What's happening?" I whispered. The door opened. Cold air rushed in. It smelled like pine. "We're here," Victor said. I forced a smile at him. To survive, I had to step up and play along. I stepped out. My legs nearly gave way. One of the men caught my arm, steadied me, then let go like I was contaminated. I huffed and turned to run. A hand grabbed my wrist. Hard. "Going somewhere?" The guard's voice was low. His grip was strong. I froze. Slowly, I felt Victo

I couldn't even live my usual life anymore.I closed my eyes, trying to push back the tears, but they came anyway."So you see," Victor continued, "running back to him isn't an option. Even if you wanted to. Which you don't."My eyes snapped open. "I never said I didn't want to.""Your mother said otherwise." He tilted his head. "She told me you promised to leave him. To never see him again." I looked at him now."You know my captors and the people holding my mum hostage?" He just shrugged and looked away."I sure do. It's a small world and I have boys. You should know, they're always watching you. If you want your mum safe, you have to listen to them. I can't help out again. I only interfered once and saved your life.
