Reina’s POV

We all stood in front of them, about ten of us lined straight up with cuffs tied to our hands as different Mafia gangs scanned us and picked who they wanted.

We were about to be sold.

Different gangs, from the small ones to the notable ones, came forward, picking which of us they wanted to own, the ones they wanted to buy. I stood at the last corner, making myself small and trying to disappear.

The Magaddino came first, then the DeCavalcante, the Gambino, as they picked one each. Some picked two of us at once and I wondered what we were getting sold for. Pleasure or death? My hands shook.

The next was the biggest Mafia gang. The Podolskaya. The most feared, the most famous, and obviously the deadliest. Even when my life was still a fairy tale, I had heard stories of how brutal they were and how whispering their name made people shiver. As I scanned the faces of the rest of us from the corner of my eyes, I could see their nervousness and their silent prayers not to get sold to Podolskaya. I tried to hide myself and wished for the same.

I met him then. Rai Mikailov.

The most brutal and ruthless Mafia leader of the Podolskaya gang.

He came by himself . Usually, he was supposed to send his right-hand man, right? But seeing him now, my heart thundered.

I had seen him on TV, but it did no justice to what I was seeing right now.

He was really tall and broad-shouldered, his long dark hair rough and untied, like it was done on purpose. He was flawless, nothing out of place except for the tattoos peeking up his neck and arms, down to his fingers. I could swear he had more all over his body too.

Every other gang stepped back until he was alone to pick. He had an intimidating presence. The kind of man who could enter a room and have everyone bend without speaking.

I shivered and quickly averted my gaze. I heard his footsteps as he walked, stopping in front of each of us, assessing. My heart thundered as his footsteps neared and suddenly stopped.

In front of me.

I went stiff.

I was still looking down until he suddenly placed his fingers roughly on my jaw, pulling my face up to look at him. I stared wide-eyed at him while he looked at me. Surprisingly, his dark grey eyes were warm, despite the dark bottomless pit behind them. The mafia monster lurking.

He trailed his fingers across my chin, emotionless, still looking at me while I shivered at his touch. Then just like he grabbed me, he pushed me back like I was a disease.

I finally breathed out.

That meant it was a no for me.

He started to move, then stopped abruptly.

“I choose her,” he said in a chill tone, and left.

Who?

It couldn't possibly be me. He recoiled when he touched me. But the faces suddenly turned toward me in pity, and that was confirmation.

It was me.

I just got sold to Rai Mikailov. Mafia leader of the Podolskaya gang.

Hands pulled me as the seller uncuffed me, removing my tag. “You have a hard life ahead of you, little rat,” he spat, his breath reeking.

I was tugged forward to two huge men in black with masked faces. I wanted to scream for help, to escape, but I couldn't. It meant death. But was my life not worse than death right now?

I acted on the only thing in my head.

I pulled a gun from one of my escorters and pointed it at my head. I’d rather die than be sold to the Podolskaya gang.

Before I could pull the trigger, the gun was swept out of my hands and onto the floor, one of the escorters’ hands wrapping around my throat.

I started to shake my head roughly. I had actually thought my swiftness could outshine the mafia. Now I could really die.

My lips quivered until he stepped into the light.

“What the fuck is going on?”

That chilly voice that sent goosebumps up my spine.

Rai Mikailov.

“I have men to teach lessons. I don't have time to waste,” he said, walking slowly toward me. His jaw was tight. He looked frightening. That was when I noticed a scar running from the side of his neck down to wherever it ended beneath his clothes.

One of the guards took off his mask, revealing a scar across his cheek.

What was going on with scars today? I cried in my mind.

“She tried to end herself, Boss,” he said, averting his eyes in respect as he let go of my throat, making me stand alone, shivering.

My heart thundered as Rai stepped in front of me.

“You’re one of the stupid ones, aren't you? Did you really think you could get away with whatever dumb plans you had in your little head? Huh?” he half-yelled, his baritone voice echoing in my head.

“Don’t try anything stupid, pipsqueak, or I’ll end you myself. I’m sure you know what that means.”

Of course I knew.

I knew what ending me meant. It could mean slicing my body bit by bit and feeding it to sharks.

I swallowed, visibly trembling.

He noticed.

Mistake number one.

He crept closer, bending down to my level. My 5’4 self.

“When I say something, I expect you to respond,” he said in a dangerously low tone.

How do I tell him? He could kill me right now.

I looked at him with tears in my eyes, trying to nod.

“Do. You. Hear. Me?” he asked coldly, pausing at each word.

Yes, sir.

I tried to nod as I screamed in my head, but all I did was cry. I tried to move my throat, the discomfort tripling.

His brow furrowed in confusion as he noticed my struggle. His eyes moved to my throat as it strained, then to my mouth that couldn’t make a sound as I tried to speak.

My eyes stayed fixed on him, brows furrowed as I kept trying, more tears spilling.

Something flashed in his eyes.

Realization.

My heart sank.

He stood up, back to his full height, then turned and left. I could swear I heard an “interesting” from him, but his cold back was already moving away.

More tears rushed down my face as I sniffed.

I couldn’t speak.

I was mute.

The one thing that mattered most to me was what I was rid of, and unfortunately, it looked like Rai Mikailov just realized that.

I couldn’t speak.

  • The Mafia’s Mute Bride   Chapter 20

Reina’s POVI made my way slowly to his room, my heart pounding like a drum in my chest. I counted my fingers..one, two, three…to steady my ragged breath before knocking twice on the heavy door.“Come in,” his baritone voice rumbled from within, sending chills racing down my spine.I pushed the door open and stepped inside, the air thick with the scent of his cologne and whiskey. He sat at the edge of his massive bed, a crystal glass cup pressed to his lips as he watched me over the rim. His eyes were darker than usual, those green colors that pinned me in place. He was shirtless, his bare chest glistening under the soft glow of the bedside lamp, every muscle etched like a sculpture.“Take off your clothes,” he commanded the moment the door clicked shut behind me.What? My hands trembled violently, clutching the fabric of my dress. He set the glass down with deliberate slowness on the nightstand and fixed me with a quiet, intense stare. His expression was unreadable, shadowed and pred

Reina’s POVThe ride back felt different.I sat in the same car, same seat, same silence… but something had shifted. Or maybe it was just me.I held the sketchbook tightly against my chest, my fingers pressing into the cover like it could disappear if I loosened my grip. I kept looking down at it, then out the window, then back again. It didn’t feel real.Nothing about today felt real. Rai sat beside me, one arm resting casually, his eyes on his phone for most of the ride. Whatever call he got at the cabin had changed something. The calm from earlier was gone. He looked… sharper now. Colder. Like whatever version of him I saw at the lake had been locked away again.I told myself that version wasn’t real anyway…It couldn’t be.Men like him didn’t have quiet places…Men like him didn’t make tea…Men like him didn’t buy sketchbooks. So what did that make him?My chest tightened slightly. I turned my face to the window again. The mansion gates came into view too quickly. The moment we drove

Reina’s POVI stared at him, trying to understand what kind of man said things like that so calmly. The lake moved softly around us while he rowed like he had not just unsettled me again.I looked away first.I was learning something dangerous about Rai Mikailov. He didn’t always need threats. Sometimes words from him did worse things. They stayed in my head long after he was done speaking. The boat drifted closer to the far side of the lake where tall trees stood around the water. It was quieter there. No guards. No engines. No voices. Just wind, water, and him.I hated that this was the safest I had felt since being taken. He tied the boat to a small wooden post and stepped out first. Then he held out a hand to help me.I looked at it….Then at him. Then I stepped out by myself. His mouth twitched like he almost smiled.“Still stubborn.”I brushed past him.The ground was soft with grass and fallen leaves. A narrow path led deeper into the trees. I didn’t know why he brought me here,

Reina’s POV“Liar.”The word stayed in the air between us.I looked up before I could stop myself. Rai was already watching me with that same unreadable look on his face, like he could see things I didn’t say. Like silence meant nothing to him.I quickly looked away again. My fingers moved to take the paper back, but he held it just out of reach.“Tell me,” he said, still calm. “Did you sleep badly because of the room… or because of me?”My chest tightened.I shook my head, not knowing what I was answering. He gave a small laugh under his breath. “You don’t even know what you’re denying.”I stood up too fast, the chair scraping the floor. I wanted space. I wanted air. I wanted him to stop looking at me like I was something he could peel open with his eyes.He didn’t move. He simply watched me stand there, nervous and stiff.I grabbed the paper and wrote quickly.“Why did you bring me here?”I held it out to him.His eyes dropped to the words. Then he looked back at me.“Because I want

  • The Mafia’s Mute Bride   Chapter 16

Reina’s POVMy eyes flew open as I sprang up, trying to remember yesterday’s events. The details.Rai had asked me to sleep in here, in his room.My eyes slowly moved to the other side of the bed. It was empty.I breathed a sigh of relief. I honestly didn’t know how I was going to face him. I remembered when I asked him if he ever thought about my feelings and if he brought all the people he owned into his room.I bit my lips. I didn’t know what came over me. I just felt the need to understand if he brought others here, made them sleep on his bed, made them stay close to him the way he made me.I suddenly felt warmth between my thighs.I was wet.What. The. Hell?My hands flew to my mouth.Did he touch me?He wouldn’t have taken advantage of me. He wasn’t that kind of person. But still… he said he owned me. Could he have…?No. I didn’t feel sore. I hadn’t had sex for a long time now, not since I broke up with my ex a while back.I should have felt sore. But I didn’t feel sore. I felt

Rai’s POVShe tried to push me back with her tiny hands on my chest, but I didn’t budge.“How did you make the Braciole, Reina?” I asked, still crowding her space. Her lips quivered as she raised her hands to sign to me.Shit.I had forgotten. She couldn’t speak.I watched her with a fascinated look as she moved her fingers, speaking to me in the only way she could. When she was done, she looked at me like I had understood, but I only stared at her.She made a small sound of frustration as my eyes drifted to her lips. What would she sound like if I was inside her? When my fingers were moving inside her, or when I had her pinned down beneath me, taking everything I gave her.I wanted to touch her so badly, to feel her, to know how soft she really was, but I was going to wait.I owned her.And she would be mine, no matter how long it took. She intrigued me.“You’re staying here tonight,” I said, finally letting her go.She looked at me in confusion, then slowly shook her head.“You have

Reina’s POV“Boss asked me to take you home,” a suited armed man with a stern face said to me as he led me to a car parked and waiting. Was he that upset about the rabbit? Rai’s POVI walked out without looking back, my steps steady, controlled, like nothing had just happened behind me, like I hadn’t just stood there watching her fall apart over something as small as a rabbit.Or at least… that’s what I told myself.I didn’t stop. Didn’t slow down. Didn’t care to see

  • The Mafia’s Mute Bride   Chapter 11

Reina’s POV“Why the sudden change of attitude, hmm?” he said to me. “There’s your target, now… shoot. Just like you did just now.”No… No… I screamed inwardly, but all I did was shake my head violently as tears rolled down my cheeks. I looked at him, pleading.“No? You don’t want to shoot it? It’s
