Reina’s POV
We all stood in front of them, about ten of us lined straight up with cuffs tied to our hands as different Mafia gangs scanned us and picked who they wanted. We were about to be sold. Different gangs, from the small ones to the notable ones, came forward, picking which of us they wanted to own, the ones they wanted to buy. I stood at the last corner, making myself small and trying to disappear. The Magaddino came first, then the DeCavalcante, the Gambino, as they picked one each. Some picked two of us at once and I wondered what we were getting sold for. Pleasure or death? My hands shook. The next was the biggest Mafia gang. The Podolskaya. The most feared, the most famous, and obviously the deadliest. Even when my life was still a fairy tale, I had heard stories of how brutal they were and how whispering their name made people shiver. As I scanned the faces of the rest of us from the corner of my eyes, I could see their nervousness and their silent prayers not to get sold to Podolskaya. I tried to hide myself and wished for the same. I met him then. Rai Mikailov. The most brutal and ruthless Mafia leader of the Podolskaya gang. He came by himself . Usually, he was supposed to send his right-hand man, right? But seeing him now, my heart thundered. I had seen him on TV, but it did no justice to what I was seeing right now. He was really tall and broad-shouldered, his long dark hair rough and untied, like it was done on purpose. He was flawless, nothing out of place except for the tattoos peeking up his neck and arms, down to his fingers. I could swear he had more all over his body too. Every other gang stepped back until he was alone to pick. He had an intimidating presence. The kind of man who could enter a room and have everyone bend without speaking. I shivered and quickly averted my gaze. I heard his footsteps as he walked, stopping in front of each of us, assessing. My heart thundered as his footsteps neared and suddenly stopped. In front of me. I went stiff. I was still looking down until he suddenly placed his fingers roughly on my jaw, pulling my face up to look at him. I stared wide-eyed at him while he looked at me. Surprisingly, his dark grey eyes were warm, despite the dark bottomless pit behind them. The mafia monster lurking. He trailed his fingers across my chin, emotionless, still looking at me while I shivered at his touch. Then just like he grabbed me, he pushed me back like I was a disease. I finally breathed out. That meant it was a no for me. He started to move, then stopped abruptly. “I choose her,” he said in a chill tone, and left. Who? It couldn't possibly be me. He recoiled when he touched me. But the faces suddenly turned toward me in pity, and that was confirmation. It was me. I just got sold to Rai Mikailov. Mafia leader of the Podolskaya gang. Hands pulled me as the seller uncuffed me, removing my tag. “You have a hard life ahead of you, little rat,” he spat, his breath reeking. I was tugged forward to two huge men in black with masked faces. I wanted to scream for help, to escape, but I couldn't. It meant death. But was my life not worse than death right now? I acted on the only thing in my head. I pulled a gun from one of my escorters and pointed it at my head. I’d rather die than be sold to the Podolskaya gang. Before I could pull the trigger, the gun was swept out of my hands and onto the floor, one of the escorters’ hands wrapping around my throat. I started to shake my head roughly. I had actually thought my swiftness could outshine the mafia. Now I could really die. My lips quivered until he stepped into the light. “What the fuck is going on?” That chilly voice that sent goosebumps up my spine. Rai Mikailov. “I have men to teach lessons. I don't have time to waste,” he said, walking slowly toward me. His jaw was tight. He looked frightening. That was when I noticed a scar running from the side of his neck down to wherever it ended beneath his clothes. One of the guards took off his mask, revealing a scar across his cheek. What was going on with scars today? I cried in my mind. “She tried to end herself, Boss,” he said, averting his eyes in respect as he let go of my throat, making me stand alone, shivering. My heart thundered as Rai stepped in front of me. “You’re one of the stupid ones, aren't you? Did you really think you could get away with whatever dumb plans you had in your little head? Huh?” he half-yelled, his baritone voice echoing in my head. “Don’t try anything stupid, pipsqueak, or I’ll end you myself. I’m sure you know what that means.” Of course I knew. I knew what ending me meant. It could mean slicing my body bit by bit and feeding it to sharks. I swallowed, visibly trembling. He noticed. Mistake number one. He crept closer, bending down to my level. My 5’4 self. “When I say something, I expect you to respond,” he said in a dangerously low tone. How do I tell him? He could kill me right now. I looked at him with tears in my eyes, trying to nod. “Do. You. Hear. Me?” he asked coldly, pausing at each word. Yes, sir. I tried to nod as I screamed in my head, but all I did was cry. I tried to move my throat, the discomfort tripling. His brow furrowed in confusion as he noticed my struggle. His eyes moved to my throat as it strained, then to my mouth that couldn’t make a sound as I tried to speak. My eyes stayed fixed on him, brows furrowed as I kept trying, more tears spilling. Something flashed in his eyes. Realization. My heart sank. He stood up, back to his full height, then turned and left. I could swear I heard an “interesting” from him, but his cold back was already moving away. More tears rushed down my face as I sniffed. I couldn’t speak. I was mute. The one thing that mattered most to me was what I was rid of, and unfortunately, it looked like Rai Mikailov just realized that. I couldn’t speak.Reina’s POV“Why the sudden change of attitude, hmm?” he said to me. “There’s your target, now… shoot. Just like you did just now.”No… No… I screamed inwardly, but all I did was shake my head violently as tears rolled down my cheeks. I looked at him, pleading.“No? You don’t want to shoot it? It’s a cute little animal, right?” he said and chuckled loudly.“Well, welcome to my world, Petalo. Those things don’t matter in my world. You have to understand that.”I looked at the monster in front of me. He had no empathy, no emotions. His eyes were void.“Shoot now! I hate waiting.” My chest tightened even more. He wasn’t asking. He never asked. He placed the gun in my hands again and nudged me forward.“Now.”I turned back to him, dropping the gun slowly as I met his eyes. I shook my head slowly, then brought my shaky hands forward and clasped them together, pleading…my fingers trembling so badly I could barely hold them still. He looked at my teary face, then slowly at my clasped hands.
Reina’s POVI got dressed in an hour like he said, a simple gown from the wardrobe. I stood in front of my room door, fidgeting with my hands until a guard came for me and led me to the garage. He opened the door to a Bentley, and I realized Rai was already in it. I tried to make myself invisible, but he actually paid me no attention this time, like I didn’t exist. Like there was no presence in his car. It felt relieving but weird at the same time. His eyes always met mine before. We rode in silence for what felt like about twenty minutes till the car stopped. He stepped out and I followed, wondering where we were.It was an open field with a serene environment… There were flowers and a little hue of nature. It felt peaceful. My mind relaxed immediately, breathing in the fresh air.I continued to look around till I found handguns in a carton. My heart sank.“Wipe that fear off your face now, Petalo… at least for now. We are practicing… in a shooting range.”My eyes found the targets i
Reina’s POVCorinne sighed and looked at me, giving a soft smile. I shook my head immediately, fear rising in my chest.No.No… I didn’t want to go anywhere, not again, not to him.One of them stepped forward and grabbed my arm. I gasped, trying to pull back, but he was too strong.“Move.”My feet dragged against the floor as they pulled me out of the room. My breathing became uneven again, panic slowly building inside me.Where were they taking me? Why?We walked through the long hallway again. Everything looked the same, big as usual and cold and empty, like a place with no soul… like him.My chest tightened. I already knew.I knew where they were taking me.Him.They stopped in front of a door and my heart dropped. One of them knocked once before opening it.And then…They pushed me in.I stumbled forward slightly, catching myself before I fell. The door shut behind me and the sound echoed loudly.I didn’t turn immediately. I didn’t want to.I didn’t want to see him again, but I coul
Reina’s POVAfter what felt like a few hours, the door opened. Corinne walked in, looking disturbed. I rubbed my eyes, climbing out of the bed.I quickly grabbed the paper and pen she had dropped on my table before she left and wrote…What happened?“I’m so sorry, Reina, but the Don wants you to serve dinner.”What?“Don’t worry… just go out, serve him. Don’t look at him… okay?” she said, worry clear on her face.I shook my head, saying no. I couldn’t face him, I couldn’t dare to stand in his presence without my legs getting weak and my heart beating fast. At the mere mention of his name, he already had that effect on me.“Go on, dear, we are left with no choice,” she told me, straightening my clothes and nudging me forward with a small smile.I walked slowly out, clenching my hands.I got to the kitchen and was immediately given food to serve. I held onto it tightly and made my way to the dining area.I felt his presence before I saw him.And when I did, I swallowed.Don’t look at hi
Reina’s POVCorinne led me to my new room in the maid’s quarters.“You’d stay here from now. I hope you like it.”I looked around. It was basic. A bed and a table. I nodded. My eyes were already heavy from crying.“Dear child… What's your name?” she said, holding my face gently.I gestured it to her, using ASL.“I’m sorry, my child… I never learnt,” she said softly. I sighed.“But you write, don’t you?”I slowly nodded as she brought out a pen and paper from her pocket.I took it and wrote my name down.“Reina… it’s a beautiful name. Maybe you could teach me ASL.”I smiled softly, nodding.“I have to go now. You stay here and rest.”I suddenly shook my head in fear.“No, Reina… he won’t hurt you if you stay here. You just came here, he’d have no issues.”Rai Mikailov didn’t look like one without issues.“Just rest here, okay? Shower and change your clothes. I’d call you if you need to do anything.”The way she spoke to me made me calm. If my mother was still alive, she would have been
Reina’s POVThe sudden noise of the door woke me up as it banged open. I sprang up in fear, trying to remember where I was till it all came rushing back.I was in the Podolskaya territory. Mikailov’s new property. I winced at the thought as two armed men gestured for me to step forward. When I did, they both dragged me.“Walk,” one of them said, leading me to wherever it was they were taking me.We walked for about seven minutes till we reached what seemed like another side of the mansion. It was like there were two mansions inside the fortress. We entered the living room, which seemed as big as my whole house back then. We continued walking till we got to the kitchen. They suddenly stopped, leaving me there immediately without a word or a glance. My eyes scanned around. There were a number of maids. Was I assigned to the kitchen? They all turned to look at me. Most of their faces were curious and pitiful. “Hey there… my name is Corinne,” an older woman with an apron came to me, smil
