Rosa’s POV

The plan was simple: go to Emilia’s, vent about the disastrous mistake of agreeing to one date with Allesio, which has now led to me agreeing to another, and drown my regret in whatever snacks she had stocked.

The plan fell apart the second I knocked on her door and got no answer.

Frowning, I pulled out my phone and dialed her number. She picked up on the second ring.

“Rosa?”

“Where are you?” I asked. “I’m at your house.”

“Oh.” A pause. “I’m at the estate.”

I closed my eyes, already regretting the direction this was heading.

“The Castillo estate?” I repeated. “The one I’ve been actively avoiding?”

She sighed. “Yes, that one.”

Of course. Because fate apparently hated me.

“I can come to you,” she offered, but I could hear the hesitation in her voice.

I glanced at the time. “It’s fine,” I muttered before I could stop myself. “I’ll come.”

“Are you sure?”

No. “Yeah.”

I hung up before I could talk myself out of it.

336Rosa’s POV I continued walking but of course, I should have remembered that Allesio wouldn’t let me go that easily.“Rosa.”His voice was closer than it should have been. I barely had time to react before his hand wrapped gently—but firmly—around my wrist, stopping me in my tracks.I inhaled sharply, my pulse spiking at the contact. My body betrayed me instantly, remembering what it was like to be touched by him, to be wanted by him. To be loved by him.But my heart? My heart remembered the hurt.I yanked my arm back, but he didn’t let go. Not tightly, not enough to hurt—but enough to stop me from running.I glared at him. “Let me go.”“Not until you listen.”I huffed out a bitter laugh. “We’ve been over this. What’s left to say?”His grip loosened, but he didn’t let go. “That I never stopped loving you.”I felt those words more than I heard them. But I couldn’t afford to believe them.I gave him a flat look. “You have a real funny way of showing it.”His throat bobbed. “I was sc

334Rosa’s POV The first rule of coming back to town? Avoid the Castillo estate at all costs.I had the plan mapped out: check into a hotel, visit Emilia, and pretend I wasn’t back in the same city as Allesio Castillo—the man who shattered my heart like cheap glass. Easy, right?Except, as always, life had other plans.I tightened my coat around me as I walked down the familiar streets, my heels clicking against the pavement. Everything looked the same—the bakery where Emilia and I used to sneak off for pastries, the bookstore where we’d spend hours gossiping instead of reading. It should’ve felt like home. Instead, it felt like a graveyard of memories. And like an idiot, I kept stepping on the ghosts.I stopped in front of Café Verona, a tiny coffee shop where Allesio and I had once shared a stolen moment. It was nothing special, just a rainy afternoon, two cups of coffee, and a conversation that made me feel like he saw me—really saw me. The memory hit me so hard I almost stepped i

333Gianna’s POVI had faced boardrooms full of cutthroat executives. Handled multimillion-dollar deals under insane pressure. Built my company from the ground up in an industry dominated by men.And yet, standing outside Emilia Castillo’s house, my palms were sweating.Matteo glanced at me as he rang the doorbell. “You okay?”I shot him a dry look. “No. I’m standing outside the house of a woman who basically told me I wasn’t good enough for her brother.”He sighed. “She was wrong.”“Maybe,” I muttered. “But she’s also pregnant and hormonal. What if she throws something at me?”Matteo smirked. “Then I’ll catch it.”The door swung open, and there she was—Emilia Castillo, barefoot, in a loose maternity dress, one hand resting on her belly, the other gripping a toddler’s tiny wrist. Her sharp brown eyes locked onto me instantly.I braced myself. Then, to my utter shock, her face softened.“Gianna.”I hesitated. “Hi.”Her gaze flicked to Matteo before settling back on me. “Come inside.”I

332Gianna’s POV I should have seen it coming. The moment Matteo walked into my office that evening, I knew. There was something in the way he looked at me—calm, steady, determined. No teasing. No games.Just him.Just us.I set my pen down, exhaling slowly. “You’re still here.”“You sound surprised.”I leaned back in my chair, studying him. “Most people go home at a reasonable hour.”“Most people don’t have unfinished business.”His voice was quiet, but I grasped the hidden meaning in it instantly.I swallowed. “Matteo—”“No.” He shook his head, stepping closer. “No more brushing me off. No more pretending.”I stiffened, but he didn’t back down.“You told me I don’t know you anymore,” he said, voice steady. “You were right. But I want to.”I glanced away. “It’s not that simple.”“It never is.”I hated how easily he saw through me.Hated that no matter how hard I tried to keep my distance, he always found his way in.Matteo exhaled, raking a hand through his hair. “Look, I don’t expe

331Gianna’s POV.The morning started like any other—an inbox full of unread emails, a lukewarm coffee I barely had time to sip, and a headache forming before I even made it to my office.“Gianna,” Lila greeted me as I walked in. “Mr. Coleman is waiting in the conference room.”I barely stopped myself from groaning.Coleman. The one executive who made me question if I had the patience to avoid homicide charges.“Fantastic,” I muttered, rubbing my temple. “What does he want?”Lila looked uncomfortable. “He wouldn’t say. But he seems... irritated.”Great.With a deep breath, I straightened my blazer and headed toward the conference room, bracing myself for whatever nonsense Coleman had cooked up this time. When I walked in, he was already seated at the table, arms crossed, impatience radiating off of him.“Coleman,” I greeted, keeping my voice even. “What can I do for you?”He didn’t bother with pleasantries. “I’m making an official complaint about your leadership.”I blinked. “Excuse m

330Gianna’s POV I didn’t want to admit it.Not to myself. Not to anyone. But the truth was relentless, creeping into my thoughts when I least expected it. In the middle of meetings. While brushing my teeth. While standing in line at my favorite café.I still loved him.I still loved Matteo.God, I wanted to be wrong. I wanted to roll my eyes at the idea, scoff at the very notion that my heart still beat for him the way it used to.But it did.And no matter how much I tried to bury it, that truth wasn’t going anywhere.I stared at my reflection in the office bathroom mirror, gripping the sink tighter. My makeup was still intact, my hair in place, but I felt undone. This wasn’t some passing feeling. This was real.I squeezed my eyes shut.I could feel it happening—the slow unraveling of all the walls I had built. The careful distance I had put between us was shrinking, crumbling under the weight of every look, every word, every moment that reminded me of us.I took a slow, steady brea

329Gianna’s POV Matteo had been good these past few weeks. Too good. He hadn’t pushed. He hadn’t teased. He hadn’t tried to force anything, and somehow, that made it worse. Because instead of ignoring him, I’d started noticing things. Small things. Like how he never left the office before me. How he always made sure I had eaten, even when he didn’t say anything about it. How he never let a single meeting end without catching my gaze—just for a second, just long enough to remind me he was there. And I had no idea what to do with that.So I did what I always did. I buried myself in work, convinced myself I was fine, and pretended I didn’t see the way he watched me when he thought I wasn’t looking.Everyone else had already left, but I was still in my office, staring at a report that my exhausted brain refused to process.I rubbed my temples, exhaling. Maybe I should call it a night. Before I could decide, a knock sounded at my door.I didn’t have to look up to know who it was.Still,

328Gianna’s POV I noticed him before I even stepped out of the office—leaning casually against the wall near the elevators, scrolling through his phone like he had nowhere better to be. But I knew better. Matteo was never just somewhere. If he was here, it was because he wanted to be.I sighed, tightening my grip on my bag as I walked past him toward the elevator. I could feel his eyes on me before he even spoke.“Working late again, boss?”I ignored him and pressed the elevator button. He stepped closer. Not close enough to touch, but close enough that I felt it. “You keep this up, and people are gonna think you’re a workaholic.”I exhaled. “That’s because I am a workaholic.”The elevator dinged open, and I stepped inside. He followed without hesitation.I shot him a look. “You don’t even live in my building.”“No, but I do have a car in the garage,” he said smoothly. “You know, like a normal person.”I crossed my arms, staring at the numbers lighting up on the panel. “You waiting
