SONIA’S POV

Sam’s presence here comes as a surprise to me. During the few times she drove me back home before Anthony got me a car, her trips here only ever ended down at the garage, and then she would do a reverse and be out on her way again, refusing to come up with me no matter how much I tried to change her mind.

I always thought she didn’t trust me enough to take our friendship to that stage. Which I honestly found weird at times, since I wasn’t a man interested in pursuing something roman

  • The Mafia’s Pregnant Bride   CHAPTER 072: CROOKED MEANS

SONIA’S POV“Sonia!”“Hey Carla,” I wave at James Brooks’ secretary, a curly-haired brunette who looks up from the copy of NextDay’s latest magazine volume she’d been skimming through. Her forehead slowly creases when her eyes land on my belly, and I immediately know the next question she’s going to ask. “Aren’t you supposed to be on leave?”Right.“Turns out I can’t stay away for too long.” I keep walking without slowing my steps. I’m kinda hoping she drops the topic, but of course, she doesn’t. It’s been the norm around here lately. Everyone has a comment or two about why I seem to be overworking myself even though I’ve promised them that I’m fine.“That’s not nice,” Carla shakes her head, looking back down at her magazine as she flips another page. “For the peanuts you’re being paid, you sure are dedicated.”I shrug internally because she isn’t wrong. My salary here would barely cover half of my bills were I staying alone. But I wasn’t here because of the money, so I wasn’t bothere

  • The Mafia’s Pregnant Bride   CHAPTER 071: NO WIFE, NO BABE.

AUTHOR'S POVThe grandfather clock stood tall on one wall of the men’s club, dinging faintly as midnight came.Axel sat at one end of the round table shuffling cards for their next round, while Dexter sat at the other, staring at nothing in particular, long lost in thought. All Dexter seemed to think about was how time wasn’t on his side anymore. He was lagging so far behind, that it made his insides churn. And it was all his grandpa’s fault.Or maybe, it was also his fault for underestimating the old man. When his grandpa, Alistair, had brought up the idea of giving his prized estate away to one of his boys, Dexter didn’t think he’d heard straight. He couldn’t believe his ears. That wasn’t how he’d planned on acquiring the vast estate someday. He had hoped to talk Grandpa into doing it someday, likely before he passed on.Being the cunny, old man his grandpa was, Dexter was so sure that he would have been made to take a series of tests to make sure he was prepared to own, manage, and

  • The Mafia’s Pregnant Bride   CHAPTER 070: OFFICE STEAM

SONIA’S POVLucia did say to give her brother some time. But I figure three days is more than enough, and now’s the time to make my move. Josh drives me to my favorite café to get some treats, because who goes to visit someone else empty-handed? Twenty minutes later, I walk out of the building holding a cup of Matcha tea and a box of donuts for him. Everybody loves donuts, so why not?Having been to his workplace that one time with Taylor, plus with Josh’s help—seeing as he’d been Anthony’s driver and would therefore know his way around, we arrive at the building in swift time. The journey to his office is even swifter, seeing as his secretary Janet doesn’t intend pissing off her boss like the last time she’d tried holding me back. I didn’t blame her, though, and I still don’t. She had only been doing her job. Lord knows I also wouldn’t have let some random, red-headed, spectacularly good looking (If I do say so myself) chick, who hadn’t even booked an appointment, come strutting in,

  • The Mafia’s Pregnant Bride   CHAPTER 069: GIFT

SONIA’S POVIf Anthony got back last night, I certainly wasn’t aware. Not until I woke up this morning and saw the text he’d sent at around 9 p.m. saying he wouldn’t be back for the night and that I also shouldn’t stay up waiting for him. That had to be the last straw for me, and I wasn’t exactly sure why. But in my defense, in the three days Sam had been here, he didn’t stay out late. Not once. Not even on the night he’d told me that Taylor had woken up.But I do know one thing: I’m at fault for the change in his behavior. There’s no saying otherwise. He’d told me two weeks ago about his cousin, Dexter’s, wedding, which was now coming up in two weeks, and how we’d been invited as family to the groom. He obviously said we weren’t going, I mean, no surprises there. The two men would practically finish up what they’d started on the day of Taylor’s tragic accident. But then grandpa called me and asked me to convince Anthony to please show up at least, it didn’t matter if it would even be

  • The Mafia’s Pregnant Bride   CHAPTER 068: LEAVING

SONIA’S POVTurns out that when you’ve got both good company and things that keep you preoccupied, the days tend to go by much more quickly, making you forget that your husband still hasn’t said more than three sentences that weren’t “How’s Hailey?” “Anything she wants is at her disposal. Let your friend know that, okay?” And “See you when I get back.”Either way, I’m great, thank you for asking. It’s been three days since the chain of events that brought Sam to my doorstep. Sam, on the other hand, has been healing quite nicely. Her back doesn’t hurt anymore, her ribs are still a bit sore, but thankfully, the doctor did assure us that nothing had been broken, so she’ll live. Her face is also beginning to look like it used to. Except for the little scar on her lips and the stitching on her neck, every other thing seems to be good.Unfortunately, Sam leaves today. She’d insisted that she was fine to go back to her place now, but when I’d told Anthony, on the occasion he hadn’t been a d

  • The Mafia’s Pregnant Bride   CHAPTER 067: ONE WORD

SONIA’S POV“Water, ma’am?” Both I and Sam’s attention flickers to the sound of the voice below us. Hailey. Little Hailey, as I so fondly call her, stands in front of Sam’s stool, holding out a glass of water in her small hands.“Thank you, darling.” Sam bends as carefully as she can, wincing a little due to the pain in her back, as she takes the glass from Hailey’s grip and takes a sip out of it before placing it on the kitchen counter. This little display of Hailey’s has been a constant since she walked into my room in the middle of the night after Sam had woken up and I’d helped her out of her clothes and cleaned her up properly.Hailey had stood at the foot of the bed, mouth slightly agape. She stared at Sam’s almost naked body seated on the bed, as Sam was in the process of examining her bruised face with a mirror. We had both stared at the little girl, not sure of what to do or say if she asked about Sam’s state. About a minute later, she picked her jaw off the floor, climbed

  • The Mafia’s Pregnant Bride   CHAPTER 055: BLOOD

SONIA’S POVIt takes me a minute to realize the sound of a door being shut came from my room. As soon as my brain registers it, I scramble up from my bed with as much strength as I can muster. Anthony is back home. And I’m not even scared of the fact that it might not actually have been him who ca

  • The Mafia’s Pregnant Bride   CHAPTER 054: BAD TURNOUT

ANTHONY’S POVIt’s not until 3 a.m. that I walk into the familiar comfort of my home, my system filled with more alcohol than I’ve consumed in a while. I’m not drunk, though, considering I was the one who drove myself back home – at least not drunk enough. But isn’t that what every drunk or high p

  • The Mafia’s Pregnant Bride   CHAPTER 50: DAMAGE CONTROL

ANTHONY’S POVThe first thing I do is to try not to give anything away from my expression because I can feel all eyes on me already: the one drilling holes into the back of my head, the one weighing heavily on me with disappointment, and the clueless one curiously trying to know what’s in the photo

  • The Mafia’s Pregnant Bride   CHAPTER 049: A VISITOR

SONIA’S POVWe spend all of about ten minutes in Tara’s office, reviewing our file and receiving feedback before we’re done for the day. Sam has driven off in her car to pick her brother from the airport, and I’m two minutes away from home. Part of me is very much excited to see Anthony after whe
