Chris’s POV

It's been a month and a half of me being alone in this huge castle of a home.

Well. "Alone." Alone is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence, considering there are roughly forty staff members, a rotating cast of men in black suits, and a chef who keeps trying to feed me things containing truffle. Alone the way a goldfish is alone. Swimming laps in an obscenely expensive bowl while everyone watches to make sure I don't belly-up.

A lot has happened in the past month, though. I

I'm so sorry, Chris, that you were so uncomfortable. I'm disappointed in Aubrey for leaving you, knowing your social battery is not like hers and that you felt compelled to accept her invite and then she ditched you.

  • The Mafia's Private Gigolo   Chapter 64

Rodrigo’s POVConsciousness returns to me the way it always does — in pieces, dragged up from somewhere deep and unwilling. My lids lift first, heavy as stones. Grey morning light bleeds through the curtains, soft and low, and for a long moment I lie perfectly still and let the world reassemble itself around me. The ceiling. The familiar dark beams of my own room. And then the weight. There is a weight on me. A warmth pressed along the whole right side of my body, a slow and steady breath rising and falling against my bare ribs. A hand, splayed flat on my chest. A leg thrown across mine, heavy and casual, as if it belongs there.I turn my head.Chris is asleep on me.His face is turned into my chest, his brown hair a wreck against my skin, the soft line of his mouth half open. One arm is tucked under my ribs. The dove pendant lies against his collarbone, safe, and never once imagined I would wake up with him lying on top of me like this.He looks peaceful. He looks like he has decided

  • The Mafia's Private Gigolo   Chapter 63

Chris’s POVI don't know what wakes me.One second there's nothing — the clean, weightless dark of being properly asleep — and the next I'm surfacing through warm water, slow and thick, with no idea which shore I've washed up on. No alarm. No voice. No sound at all except the sea through a window and the soft, even rhythm of something underneath me.Something warm. Something that moves.I open my eyes a bit.My head is on Rodrigo's chest. That's the first thing. His skin, warm and bare under my cheek, rising and falling in a slow tide I'm apparently already synced to. My hand is splayed across his ribs. My leg is thrown over his. I'm using him like a mattress and he's letting me, one arm heavy around my shoulders, the other hand buried in my hair like he fell asleep mid-pat.I lift my head just enough to look at him. He's asleep. Actually asleep. The hard line of his jaw is slack, the crease between his brows gone, his mouth not quite closed. The dragon at his neck lies still. In the

  • The Mafia's Private Gigolo   Chapter 62

Chris’s POV Does that answer your question, Chris? No. It answered nothing at all, and we both knew it. His thumbs were still stroking slow circles into my cheeks, and his mouth was still close enough that I could feel the heat coming off it, and I could see in those silver eyes that he knew exactly how little he had given me. He had kissed me instead of answering, and he'd done it with the confidence of a man who had learned long ago that a kiss could close a subject better than any sentence. And the worst of it — the truly humiliating, spineless, human worst of it — was that I let him. I didn't want the truth. Or i didn't care for it. At least not tonight. Right now, I wanted his mouth on mine again, so badly that my jaw actually ached with the wanting of it, and I decided right there, with his hands warm on my face, that I would take whatever he was willing to hand me and worry about the cost in the morning. He kissed me again. This one was different. Slower, deeper, his tong

  • The Mafia's Private Gigolo   Chapter 61

Chris’s POVI won't call it anger. Anger is clean, sharp, a blade you can set down. This is something that sits in the marrow and throbs. Hurt. Confused. I'm not a fan of labels for anything — I'd rather just let the mess be a mess — but for the first time in my stupid, hopeful life, I need to know what I am. If I'm the gigolo, fine. Hand me the script and tell me where to stand. If I'm the pet, I'd like to be walked. I'd like to know my place so I stop mistaking every stray gesture for something that could pass for fondness. I knocked on his door. Three knuckles against dark wood, no answer. The handle gave beneath my palm and the bedroom opened on emptiness — the sheets rumpled, the lamps low, the room still warm from the shower somewhere beyond the en-suite. I stepped inside, the carpet swallowing my footsteps, and just as the door settled half-closed behind me, the bathroom door swung wide. Rodrigo walked out with a towel wrapp

  • The Mafia's Private Gigolo   Chapter 60

Chris’s POVNot here, Chris. That was all it took.I looked at Rodrigo, waiting for him to say something else. Maybe explain what he meant. Maybe tell me we would talk about it later. But he didn't.He simply picked up his wine glass and took a sip.And suddenly, I felt incredibly stupid.Of course. What had I been expecting?A romantic confession over dinner? A heartfelt declaration beneath the city lights? Maybe he would reach across the table, take my hand and tell me that the kiss had changed everything.God.I needed professional help.I looked down at my plate, pretending to be interested in the remaining food.“Right,” I murmured. My appetite had disappeared.I should have known better than to bring it up. Rodrigo had been perfectly clear about the boundaries of our arrangement from the beginning. Whatever happened between us, whatever he wa

  • The Mafia's Private Gigolo   Chapter 59

Chris’s POVFifteen minutes. That was how long I had left to decide what to wear, and judging by the state of my bedroom, I was doing a spectacular job of wasting it.There were clothes everywhere. On the bed, on the armchair, hanging halfway out of the wardrobe and, somehow, one shirt had ended up on the floor near the bathroom door. I had changed outfits so many times that I was beginning to lose track of what I had already tried. The problem wasn't that I didn't have anything to wear.Quite the opposite, actually.Rodrigo had apparently decided that my wardrobe needed a complete financial intervention. There were shirts, trousers, jackets, shoes and other things I couldn't even identify without consulting the internet. Every time I opened another drawer or wardrobe compartment, I discovered something new.The real problem was figuring out what level of formal was appropriate for the evening. Was this a suit-and-tie situation? A dinner jacket? Something corporate but relaxed? Or was
