I scrambled to my feet immediately, utterly embarrassed to be seen in that position. It made me feel like the slut I was sold to be.
I heard Keith’s deep growl, and I couldn’t tell what his feelings were.
“Jackie, what are you doing here?” Keith asked her disgruntledly.
He sounded disgusted.
“Really, Keith?” She asked him without flinching.
She didn’t seem to be moved by Keith’s harshness. It was as though she was used to it already.
“The least you could have done was knock,” Keith told her.
She glanced at me, but her eyes were hot with fire and rage, and it burned into my skin. I couldn’t even hold her gaze.
Jackie, as Keith referred to her, was strikingly beautiful. There was something about her that screamed power and class, and looking at her and Keith, they seemed like the perfect match.
A slice of jealousy cut through me instantly.
Gosh, I don’t even know who she is, and there is nothing going on between Keith and I, so why did I feel slightly jealous?
“We need to talk, Keith,” Jackie said, eventually taking her eyes away from me.
“Leave us,” Keith ordered.
For a second, I didn’t know who he was ordering out of the room. I thought it was Jackie because she was the intruder, but when Keith looked at me stiffly, I understood that it was me.
“What the fuck are you still standing here and staring at?” Jackie barked at me.
I dashed out of the room, more embarrassed than I had ever been.
Then I heard the door slam loudly.
I guessed it must have been Jackie. She seemed really hostile and upset, and it made me wonder why on earth she would be upset with me.
She didn’t know me and I didn’t know her either.
Anyway, curiosity didn’t make me leave. Instead, I glued my eyes to the door and eavesdropped on them.
“Who is she?” Jackie asked Keith tightly.
“That shouldn’t be any of your business, Jackie,” Keith responded.
She sounded like a jealous lover to me, especially from the way she glared at me. If Keith already had a lover, then what was he doing with me?
“He bought you as his sex slave, duh,” a voice in my head reminded me.
“We are business partners, and as such, your affairs concern me as well,” she stated.
“And the last time I checked, this is personal,” Keith said. “How does my personal life affect our business together?” He asked.
Okay, now I understood it; they were business partners, but from my point of view, it seemed as though Jackie saw Keith more than that.
Well, who wouldn’t?
Keith was handsome and well built, and he carried with him an air of masculinity and power, and judging from everything I had seen so far, he was wealthy.
“Who is she, Keith, and don’t tell me that what I saw was exactly what was about to happen before I came in?” She asked, insisting on the first question.
“Why are you here?” Keith asked, deliberately ignoring her question.
They were simply going back and forth, and it didn’t look like either of them was ready to surrender to the other.
“You shouldn’t be eavesdropping on them, Mia,” a voice in my head warned me. “If you get caught, you might be in a more dangerous situation than you already are.”
But I didn’t walk away.
Where would I go?
Keith merely commanded me to leave. He didn’t say where, and I couldn't see anyone around, so I held onto that as my excuse for eavesdropping. My mum had warned me several times about fixing my ears into other people’s business without being asked, and that it would land me in serious trouble someday, but I didn’t listen to her.
“You should be concentrating on escaping and not listening to a back and forth banter between two business partners,” the same voice told me.
Yes, I knew that I should be doing that, but somehow, I couldn’t move my feet away from the door.
“Why are you being secretive with me, huh?” Jackie asked Keith.
She was refusing to drop the issue that Keith obviously didn’t want to talk about. Even a blind and deaf man could tell that she was obsessed with Keith. I spent only a few minutes in her presence, but I could tell. She might be an alpha female, but she was terrible at hiding her feelings.
So how couldn’t Keith tell? Or maybe he was just feigning ignorance.
“I have never discussed my private business with you, Jackie,” Keith told her gruffly.
“She is not even your type!” Jackie said.
Instinctively, I looked down at myself and felt somewhat inadequate. This was the first time that anyone had ever made me feel this way.
“She is too young for you, Keith, and too bland. There is nothing special about her,” Jackie continued to insist, as though she was trying to force Keith into agreeing with her.
“Why are you here?” Keith asked instead, pretending he didn’t hear all that she had said.
“I have been calling you, Keith, and it seems as though you are allowing your ‘personal’ business to get in the way of our business,” Jackie said sourly.
“I have been busy,” Keith responded, almost sounding nonchalant. “What is this shout?” He asked.
“There have been some problems that require your urgent attention, and you know I wouldn’t have come all the way down here just to tell you about it if it wasn’t,” Jackie said.
I fastened my ear to the door, wanting desperately to hear them. I wanted to know what Keith was into. As far as I could tell, he was a stranger, and I couldn’t trust him. He bought me for an outrageous amount of money and killed a man in my presence, and now, I was in his residence. So I really needed to know.
Again, I should be focusing on fleeing, I knew that, but…
“Hey,” I heard a stern voice.
And I jumped in shock.
Standing in front of me was Cain, the man I saw earlier with Keith. He had obviously caught me eavesdropping as he cocked his eyebrow questioningly.
My heart pounded hard against my ribs.
I was in deep trouble!
MIAMy twentieth birthday was more than I could have ever asked for. There weren’t many people present because I didn’t have friends, but it was worthwhile.“Look who is twenty today,” Keith said as he walked into the bedroom.I had had to drag myself back to my room to take off my clothes and jewelry. In the last couple of weeks, Keith had spoiled me silly with shopping and hiring an event planner to plan my birthday,It was magical!I was tired from having more fun than I ever thought I would be able to get in my life, but as soon as Keith walked in, my energy jumped back to life instantly.“Thank you for the party, Keith,” I said with a low voice, sounding a little lower than my usual voice. We were back at the mansion, and Keith had become more loving and caring than I could have ever thought. He had had to focus on rebuilding the Institute, especially with the absence of Jackie as well, but then again, he managed to always be there for me.Also, since that first night that Keith
JACKIEIt had been over two weeks since Keith kicked me out of the Institute and completely excommunicated me. All attempts to get back into his good books failed woefully. And then the arrest.Everything had happened so fast, and as I stared into space and waited for the doctor’s report, I thought about everything and how much I had lost.“You should even be grateful that after everything Keith found out about you, he didn’t kill you like he did to Saint,” a voice in my head told me.The detective had rounded me up a few days after Keith kicked me out. I had tried to reach out to Keith to get me out of the station because I knew that with his connection and wealth, he could, but Keith stood firmly to his words. He wouldn’t be moved. No attempt made by me was fruitful. Then a week and a few days later, I had collapsed in the station after suffering dizziness and a pounding headache for some days. I was still very much under the police’s custody, and that was exactly where I would be
MIAI waited for Keith impatiently, and I began to ask myself if I did the right thing by telling him all that he should know about Jackie.“Keith has always treated me like a child,” I said to myself. “What if he doesn’t listen to me? What if he kills Jackie?” I questioned myself.I would never be able to forgive myself if he did. Also, I didn’t even get to confront him about Edward Zachary before he stormed off.“Keith is taking too long,” I said to myself as I began to pace around in his office. My worry was intensifying, but after some minutes, the door opened and Keith walked in.“I am sorry I took longer than expected,” Keith said.My eyes widened with shock instantly.Keith Von Quavo, the stiff and strong mafia, apologizing to me for nearly no reason? It felt too good to be true! I had to blink twice to be sure that I wasn’t dreaming.Keith didn’t notice my reaction to his apology.“I wanted to make sure Jackie left the Institute once and for all,” Keith continued, walking clos
KEITH I turned, ready to leave.“Where are you going?” Detective Austin asked me.“To prepare for war,” I said, already pulling out my cell phone to call Cain, because I knew that Terrace was bringing war to me, and I needed to be ready.I should thank the detective for giving me this information because if he hadn’t, Terrace would have rounded me up and destroyed me in the blink of an eye, but I just couldn’t right now.Even at that, my heart was still beating hard against my chest. I wasn’t ready to war against Terrace. He was the only man that was deadlier and more dangerous than I was, and by now, he would have already guessed that I also got rid of Julian because he was getting too close. The detective stood up as well.“You don’t have to, Keith,” he said deeply.I stopped and turned to him again.“What do you mean?” I asked.“We are looking to nail him too, Keith. He has been responsible for a lot of deadly crimes in the city, but we haven’t been able to get a hold of him for y
KEITH “What is this about?” I asked detective Austin as soon as I got to the address he sent to me.It was a small isolated restaurant that didn’t have any customers, so as soon as I got there, I picked up my gun. I always had one in my car, but I rarely used it because there hadn’t been the need for me to. I tucked it into my waistband before proceeding into the restaurant, and I saw the detective waiting for me. He was the only one there. I would be damned to trust anyone fully, including a bloody detective.“Please, sit,” he said calmly.“I am not cut out for this,” I said with a snarl.I wanted to get back to the Institute as soon as possible to confront Jackie about her painful lie, and as such, I didn’t have the time for this, especially now that we really didn’t have much in common.“You already have what you want; the new Dealer is dead, and we don’t have need for each other anymore,” I added, still standing.“If you thought so deep inside, Keith, you wouldn’t have come,” he
MIAKeith still hadn’t returned to the Institute after long hours, and I became more worried because I didn’t get to pack his food before he left.“It’s already lunch time now and he isn’t here,” I said to myself wistfully.I trudged to the cafeteria. That was the last place I really wanted to be right now, especially after what happened, but I really didn’t have much of a choice.Thankfully, I saw Tommy just when he was about to enter the cafeteria.“You came for lunch?” Tommy asked me.He sounded surprised, but I could also understand why he was like that. The poison episode was still fresh, but the truth was that a lot of things were now on my mind, like Edward Zachary being Keith’s biological father. I really wanted to confront Keith about me.A part of me was livid and confused at the same time, but the other part of me was worried about Keith. Everything just seemed to be happening in too much haste and I didn’t know what to do.“Keith isn’t back yet,” I told him.“But Jackie is
