The kitchen smelt of coffee and baked bread. Lillian walked down the long room with terracotta tiles and cream walls with some herbs hanging on them. Rosemary, she recognised. The darker one didn't.

The windows faced east, and the morning light came in low across the wooden table. She admired how beautiful Mexico was, and the country house made her connect with nature.

She walked to the dining room to see that it was empty. The chair at the head of the table looked as if someone had left it q

Chapter 55Lillian walked into her room to see a Louis Vuitton box sitting in the centre of her bed.She had come upstairs to freshen up and get some rest. Now she was looking at an orange-coloured box with brown trim and two velvet cases beside it. One long and flat, one small and square. She crossed to the bed and opened the smaller case first. They were small gold earrings. A gold necklace glittered under the light. She lifted the lid of the big box. It was a burgundy silk M dress folded in tissue. She held it up, wearing a smile on her face. She sat on the edge of the bed with it in her lap, staring at the golden heels lying beside the box. After she freshened up, she didn't do much; she applied foundation and mascara and lined her lips. Her hair was dry and brushed out. It fell on her shoulders. She put the earrings in and reached behind her neck to fasten the necklace. Then she stood in front of the mirror in the dress, staring at herself. It was seven o'clock. She went up

The plane took off out of Mexican airspace just after six in the morning, and Lilian watched as the coastline disappeared through the window until they were in the clouds. Alex was seated across the aisle with his laptop open and a cup of coffee beside it. He didn't try to talk to her. He didn't look over to see whether she was looking at him. His focus was on his laptop. He reviewed some work blueprints and sent some emails. Lillian kept looking at her window, wrapped in a blanket and drinking warm coffee. The clouds went on for a long time, but in no time, they arrived in New York. Once they landed in New York, she turned to Alex. Since the whole flight, she hasn't turned to him. “I would like to go see my mum in the hospital right now. If you don't mind,” she said; her expression was unreadable. “Marcus will go with you then,” he said; he bit his lips and looked away. His attention was on his phone and laptop. Lillian felt relieved that he hadn't restricted her or stopped he

The library was on the second floor, at the end of a corridor. Lilian found a room with a reading lamp, and two chairs were placed towards a fireplace that had not been lit. The room smelt of old paper and something faintly citrus. She lit the fire and sat on the left chair with a book open in her lap. She read the same page four times. She kept reading through the lines, but she couldn't focus. Her mind was thinking about something else. Outside, the garden had gone fully dark. The kitchen lights had gone off an hour ago. The house had settled into itself. Her phone sat face-down on the side table. She hadn't touched it since she walked inside from the hallway.“He destroys everything he touches.” She remembered the voice. She wondered why someone would tell her such a thing. She knew Alex was dangerous, but she wondered if he had done worse. At that point she feared for herself and her family. She knew what Alex was capable of, so if anybody says anything about him, it's so har

She walked to the dining room to see that it was empty. The chair at the head of the table looked as if someone had left it quickly. There was a cup of coffee at its place. She crossed to her seat and stood over the rose flower lying on the table. No vase, no water. Just the flower lying across the white ceramic with steam cut cleanly and one leaf still on. "He left before dawn. He left this for you.”Mrs Steele was at the counter with her back half-turned, wiping the kitchen counter. She was an elderly woman with grey hair pinned close to her head. Her facial features were exactly those of a Mexican. "He does tha

His mouth was on her before she could even say a word. At eleven forty-three at the front door. Lillian stood still, and her mouth moved with his. He slowly kissed her, pulling her close to him and closing the gap between them. His hand came up to her chin and tilted her face. Lillian felt the warmth in his palm. Her chest was rising and falling rapidly. She couldn't control it, and at the same time, she didn't want the kiss to stop. Her hands moved to his chest. She wasn't pulling him closer. She was holding on. He made a sound against her mouth, barely anything more breath than his voice. Her fingers tightened on his chest. The night was cold, and she found his body warm. That was the part she hadn't been prepared for. Holding Alex close to her. His thumb moved along her jaw down to her chest, and her knees became weak. She could feel wetness between her panties, which she couldn't tell how long. Suddenly, she pulled away. Her hand went to her lips before she could say a word.

At a dinner party, the chandelier above the ballroom shattered the air into a million diamond shards. Lillian felt the music's vibration in her chest. Alex’s hand was on her waist as they walked in. She was expecting to feel like an outsider in a world as expensive as this, but Alex was her anchor. She had no idea how to move her body to the music's rhythm. “You are doing that thing again,” Alex said loudly. Lillian moved her head backwards and met his gaze. “What thing? She asked, creasing her brows. The 'I'm-calculating-the-nearest-exit' look. Your left eyebrow hitches just a fraction of a millimetre." He guided her through a 360-degree turn. “Stay here. With me."Lillian let out the breath she had been holding. “It's just quiet. I didn't think I'd be in a room filled with hundreds of people yet quiet.”“It's only quiet because I'm not letting anyone else in," he said. As they danced, she leaned her forehead on his chest, the scent of expensive cedarwood wrapped around her. Sh

Her breath hitched. He said it like a compliment, like something he was proud of.And somehow, that made it worse and better at the same time.“They’ll underestimate you, thinking you're soft,” he continued. “Good. Use it.”Lillian looked at him. This man trained her like she was a soldier. Who dre

Lillian stepped out, her beige trench coat dancing behind her. The sun reflected over the sleek jet waiting before her. The kind of sight that felt like a big dream. Just a few months ago, she was pleading for mercy from Alexander, fighting back tears and exhaustion. Now she was boarding his priva

The makeup artist studied Lillian with narrowed eyes. “Close your eyes for me,” she murmured.Lillian did as she was instructed. Soft bristles swept over her eyelids and cheekbones. No Mercy LeftIt was midnight in the mansion. They no longer stayed at the hotel. Alex had ordered everyone to his mansion in Paris. A private mansion far from a residential area.
