The roof was leaking again.

Elena didn't need an alarm. The cold drop of water that landed on her forehead at exactly 4:28 every morning had become one.

She opened her eyes.

Another drop landed on her cheek.

She sighed and sat up on the thin mattress she had placed on the floor of the small storeroom behind the Laurent mansion. A rusted bucket sat beside her, already half-full from the night's rain.

The room smelled of damp concrete, detergent, and diesel from the generator next door.

Elena rubbed her swollen knees.

Yesterday had been another twelve-hour shift.

Today would be the same.

Maybe worse.

For three years, she had lived behind the Laurent mansion without ever truly being part of it.

She cleaned the mansion, cooked for the people who lived in it, washed their clothes, scrubbed their bathrooms and their swimming pool.

But she was never allowed to forget that she did not belong there.

The mansion belonged to the Laurent family.

And Elena was only the maid.

She folded her thin blanket neatly and tucked her cracked phone beneath her pillow. Then she reached for the black-and-white uniform hanging from a nail in the wall.

The uniform was too large around her waist and too short around her ankles.

She put it on anyway.

She had learned long ago not to complain.

At eighteen, she had discovered that complaining meant going hungry.

At nineteen, she learned to work through pain.

At twenty, she stopped expecting kindness.

And now, at twenty-two, she had almost forgotten what it felt like to imagine a different life.

A voice suddenly echoed across the compound.

"Elena!"

She froze.

"Elena! My coffee! Are you dead?"

Vivian Laurent.

Even at four-thirty in the morning, her voice could cut through walls.

Elena hurried out of the storeroom.

She ran barefoot across the cold compound toward the main house.

There was an invisible line between the people who lived in the mansion and the people who served them.

Elena knew exactly where that line was.

She was allowed into the marble-floored kitchen.

She was allowed into the laundry room.

She was allowed into the bathrooms.

But she could never sit on the furniture.

Never eat at the dining table.

Never use the family's swimming pool.

And she was expected to keep her eyes lowered whenever Vivian Laurent was speaking.

"Good morning, Madam," Elena whispered when she reached the kitchen.

Vivian stood beside the marble island in a silk robe, a diamond necklace glittering against her throat.

She didn't look at Elena.

"You're late."

"I'm sorry, Madam."

"You should be."

Vivian finally looked at her.

Her eyes traveled from Elena's damp hair to her bare feet.

"You stink of that filthy storeroom."

Elena lowered her eyes.

"My son is coming home from New York today," Vivian continued. "I don't want this house smelling like poverty when he arrives."

"Yes, Madam."

"Scrub the three guest bathrooms again."

"Yes, Madam."

"And clean the pool."

Elena hesitated.

"With your hands," Vivian added.

Her voice hardened.

"The machine is for clean people."

Elena swallowed.

"Yes, Madam."

She turned toward the coffee machine.

Her hands were shaking.

She hadn't eaten since noon the previous day.

The chef had quietly left a piece of bread for her the night before, but Chloe Laurent had found it.

Chloe had thrown it into the bin.

"Maids who eat too much become lazy," she had said.

Elena had said nothing.

She had learned that silence was safer.

She poured Vivian's coffee.

"Take it."

Elena placed the cup in front of her.

Vivian took one sip.

"Too cold."

"I'm sorry."

"Make another."

"Yes, Madam."

Elena turned back toward the coffee machine.

Behind her, Vivian smiled faintly.

She enjoyed watching Elena obey.

She had been doing it for three years.

And Elena had never once fought back.

At exactly seven o'clock, the gates opened.

A black Bentley rolled into the compound.

Elena was carrying a bucket toward the pool when she heard the car.

She stopped for half a second.

Everyone in the house knew what that car meant.

Adrian Laurent was home.

At twenty-eight, Adrian was the CEO of Laurent Group, one of the youngest billionaires in the country, and the only son Vivian had ever openly adored.

He had been working hard, always on business trips, expanding Laurent Group's international business.

Elena had seen his face in newspapers and magazines. She had also seen him around the mansion a handful of times.

But she had never really spoken to him.

Why would she?

He belonged to another world.

To Elena, Adrian Laurent was simply another person she served.

She had carried his luggage.

Ironed his shirts.

Prepared his coffee.

Cleaned the room after he left.

But she had never looked directly into his eyes.

And Adrian had never had a reason to notice her.

Until that morning.

The driver's door opened.

Adrian stepped out.

Tall.

Immaculately dressed.

His dark suit looked almost black beneath the morning sun.

His grey eyes were cold and unreadable.

He walked toward the house, speaking briefly to his driver.

Then he noticed Elena standing beside the pool.

He stopped.

For the first time, he actually looked at her.

Not at her uniform.

Not at the bucket in her hand.

At her.

Her feet were cracked and bleeding.

Her hands were red from years of harsh detergents.

Her uniform was two sizes too big.

And there was something strange about her face.

She looked exhausted.

But underneath the exhaustion, there was a quiet beauty he had somehow never noticed.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

He turned toward his mother.

"Why is she still doing the pool by hand?"

Vivian glanced at Elena.

"Because that's her job."

Adrian looked back at her.

"She's been here for three years, hasn't she?"

Vivian shrugged.

"Something like that."

He frowned.

"What's her name?"

Vivian laughed.

"Elena."

She said the name as if it were unimportant.

"She's the orphan maid. Don't waste your concern on her. She's useful."

Elena lowered her head.

Vivian added with a cruel smile,

"Like a cockroach. She survives anywhere."

Adrian's expression hardened slightly.

"Mother."

"What?"

"Nothing."

He walked inside.

But as he passed the pool, he looked back once.

Elena was already kneeling.

Scrubbing.

As if she hadn't heard anything.

As if she hadn't been insulted.

As if she had learned how to disappear while standing in plain sight.

Adrian continued walking.

He told himself he had forgotten about her by the time he reached the kitchen.

He hadn't.

The pool was freezing.

Elena knelt at its edge and dipped her hands into the water.

The rough tiles cut into her knees.

She scrubbed.

One tile.

Then another.

Then another.

She had done this yesterday.

And the day before.

And the day before that.

She was so focused on her work that she didn't notice the second car entering the compound.

It was an old Toyota.

It didn't belong there.

The security guards moved toward it immediately.

The driver barely had time to stop before an elderly man stepped out.

He wore a grey suit.

His silver hair was disheveled.

In his hands was a brown leather file, held so tightly that his knuckles were white.

He looked around desperately.

Then his eyes found Elena.

He stopped breathing.

"Stop!"

Everyone turned.

The old man pointed toward the pool.

"Stop that girl!"

Elena froze.

Vivian stormed out of the house.

"Who are you?"

The man ignored her.

He walked toward Elena.

"Don't let her kneel!"

One of the guards stepped forward.

"Sir, you need to leave."

The old man pushed past him.

"My name is Robert Cole!"

Vivian's expression changed.

Robert Cole.

She knew that name.

Richard Laurent's lawyer.

The lawyer who had been with her husband for more than twenty years.

The lawyer who had disappeared from her life after Richard's death.

Vivian's face drained of color.

"Robert?"

He looked directly at her.

"I've been searching for twenty-two years."

Vivian stepped backward.

"For a girl born on October 3rd at St. Jude Hospital."

Elena slowly stood.

Her heart began to pound.

The old man's eyes filled with tears.

"Her mother's name was Isabella Grace."

The bucket slipped from Elena's hand.

It hit the ground.

Splash.

Water spread across the tiles.

Isabella Grace.

Her mother's name.

The only thing Elena had left from the woman who died when she was four.

Elena stared at Robert.

"How do you know my mother's name?"

Robert walked toward her.

He was crying now.

"You have her eyes."

He touched his chest.

"My God... you have Isabella's eyes."

Vivian suddenly stepped between them.

"Get out of my house."

Robert looked at her.

"This is not your house."

Vivian's voice became sharp.

"Security!"

Robert opened the leather file.

"Twenty-two years ago, you told Richard Laurent that Isabella had run away."

Vivian went pale.

"You told him his baby was dead."

Elena's breathing stopped.

Robert continued.

"You told him Isabella had betrayed him. You forged documents to make him believe his daughter had died."

"That's a lie!"

Robert pulled out a photograph.

"Then explain this."

He held it up.

Elena stepped closer.

Her hands began to tremble.

The photograph showed a young woman.

Beautiful.

Pregnant.

Smiling.

Standing beside a younger Richard Laurent.

Elena stared at the photograph.

Her mother.

And the man beside her

She knew that face.

She had seen it in the forbidden study.

Richard Laurent.

Her father.

"No..."

Elena shook her head.

"No. My mother was poor. We lived in one room."

Robert's eyes softened.

"Because Vivian forced her out."

He looked at Vivian.

"Isabella was seven months pregnant when you drove her away."

Vivian's face hardened.

"You told Richard that Isabella had cheated on him. You convinced him the child wasn't his."

He pulled another document from the file.

"But Richard never stopped searching."

Elena stared at him.

"Searching?"

"Yes."

Robert's voice broke.

"He died five years ago believing his first wife and his daughter were somewhere in this world,he already knows you lied to him,he had to live with that pain."

Elena covered her mouth.

Robert pulled out a sealed document.

"But he prepared for the possibility that the truth would one day be discovered."

He placed the document in Elena's hands.

A will.

Officially stamped.

Signed.

And attached to it was a small USB drive.

Robert looked directly into Elena's eyes.

"Richard Laurent left his estate to his firstborn child."

Elena couldn't breathe.

Robert read the words aloud.

"I, Richard Laurent, being of sound mind, leave my estate at No. 12 Laurent Drive, my properties, accounts, investments, and fifty-one percent controlling shares in Laurent Group to my firstborn child, Elena Grace Laurent, daughter of Isabella Grace."

Elena stared at the document.

Robert smiled through his tears.

"Today is October 3rd."

Her birthday.

"You are twenty-two today."

He took her trembling hand.

"Happy birthday, Elena."

His voice softened.

"Today, you own the mansion."

The bucket floated quietly in the pool.

Elena stood there in her wet maid's uniform.

Her knees were bleeding.

Her hands were raw.

The girl who had slept beside a leaking roof had just inherited the mansion she had spent three years cleaning.

Vivian collapsed.

"That's impossible!"

She hit the marble floor.

"That's a lie!"

Robert didn't move.

Vivian scrambled back to her feet.

"Security! Throw him out!"

Nobody moved.

The guards looked at Elena.

Then at Robert.

Then at Vivian.

For the first time, they didn't know who they were supposed to obey.

Adrian appeared at the top of the staircase.

He had heard everything.

He stared at the document in Robert's hand.

Then at Elena.

Something inside him shifted.

He walked downstairs.

Slowly.

Robert looked at him.

"Adrian."

Adrian stopped.

"My father..."

Robert nodded.

"Richard was your legal father. But he was not your biological father."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"What are you saying?"

Robert turned toward Vivian.

"Adrian was 5 years old and Chloe was 1 year old when you married Richard."

Vivian's face went white.

Adrian stared at his mother.

"Is that true?"

She said nothing.

Robert continued.

"Richard raised Adrian as his son. He loved him. But Elena is Richard's only biological child."

Adrian looked at Elena.

The pieces began falling into place.

The photograph.

The date.

The will.

His father's obsession with October 3rd and the woman picture he always witness him shedding tears for her even if he thought no one was watching.

And here the woman who had been working in his home for three years.

Elena.

Not his sister.

Not a stranger.

Richard's daughter.

The heir to Laurent Group.

His father's child.

Vivian suddenly lunged toward Elena.

"You little liar!"

She raised her hand.

Adrian caught her wrist before it reached Elena.

"Don't."

His voice was quiet.

But everyone heard the warning in it.

Vivian stared at him.

"Adrian, she's trying to steal everything!"

Adrian released her wrist.

"Maybe because everything was already hers."

Vivian looked at him in disbelief.

"You believe her?"

"I believe my father's documents."

Robert immediately opened the USB drive.

"I have something else."

He connected it to a laptop.

The screen came alive.

An older Richard Laurent appeared.

He was lying in a hospital bed.

His face was thin.

His voice was weak.

But his eyes were unmistakable.

Elena stopped breathing.

Her father.

Richard looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, Robert has found my daughter,I had him to search for Isabella and her after I found out she never left me."

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

Richard continued.

"My daughter, if you are alive, I am sorry."

A tear rolled down his face.

"I was told you and your mother died. I believed it for years. But I never stopped loving Isabella. I never stopped hoping that somewhere in this world, my daughter was alive."

Elena covered her mouth.

Richard continued.

"My daughter, if you are watching this, everything I own belongs to you."

He paused.

"The mansion was built for your mother. The master bedroom was hers. No one was ever allowed to take it from her."

Elena began to cry.

"And if Vivian is still living there..."

Richard's expression hardened.

"...she has no right to it."

The video ended.

Silence filled the mansion.

Vivian shook her head.

"No."

She backed away.

"No, no, no."

Then she screamed.

"That video is fake!"

She turned toward Adrian.

"Richard left another will! He left everything to you!"

Adrian didn't answer.

He was staring at Elena.

For the first time, he saw the woman behind the uniform.

A daughter who had been robbed of twenty-two years with her father.

Robert walked toward Elena.

"There is one more thing."

He handed her a sealed envelope.

"Your father wrote this shortly before he died."

Elena opened it with trembling fingers.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

She read silently.

My dearest Isabella and my baby girl,

If you ever read this, know that I never stopped loving you.

I was told you died. I buried an empty coffin because I could not bear to bury the woman I loved without knowing where your body was.

If my daughter is alive, tell her that her father never forgot her.

The mansion was built for her mother.

The master bedroom is hers.

And if she ever comes home, tell her that I am sorry.

—Papa

Elena broke.

She sank to her knees and sobbed.

Not the quiet tears she had learned to hide.

These were loud, painful sobs.

Twenty-two years of loneliness.

Twenty-two years of being told she was nobody.

Twenty-two years of believing her father had abandoned her.

Adrian watched her.

Something twisted painfully inside his chest.

Without thinking, he removed his jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders.

Elena looked up at him.

Their eyes met.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Adrian said quietly,

"You don't have to kneel anymore."

Vivian stared at the jacket around Elena.

Her expression changed.

She understood something that frightened her.

She hadn't only lost the mansion.

She was losing control over her son too.

Robert turned toward the guards.

"From this moment forward, this property belongs to Ms. Elena Grace Laurent."

He pointed toward Vivian.

"Mrs. Vivian Laurent and her daughter will move to the guest house by six p.m."

Vivian stared at him.

"You can't throw me out of my own home!"

Robert's expression remained calm.

"It was never your home."

At that exact moment, the gates opened.

Chloe Laurent stepped out of a car carrying several designer shopping bags.

She stopped.

Her mother was standing in the middle of the mansion's entrance.

Adrian was beside Elena.

And Elena was wearing Adrian's jacket.

Chloe's eyes widened.

"What is that maid doing wearing my brother's jacket?"

Nobody answered.

Chloe walked closer.

"Mom?"

Robert adjusted his glasses.

"Miss Chloe."

She glared at him.

"What is happening?"

Robert gestured toward Elena.

"Meet the new owner of Laurent Mansion."

Chloe laughed.

A sharp, disbelieving laugh.

"Elena?"

She looked at Elena from head to toe.

"She sleeps in a storeroom."

Robert nodded.

"Not anymore."

"She eats leftovers!"

"Not anymore."

"She's a maid!"

Robert smiled.

"Not anymore."

Chloe's smile disappeared.

Robert's final words landed like a slap.

"She's your landlady now."

Chloe stared at Elena.

For the first time in her life, Elena didn't look away.

Adrian help Elena up with Attorney Robert as they walked into the house to the Master Room

The master bedroom was at the bigger side of the mansion.

Elena had never been allowed near it.

She had cleaned the hallway outside it hundreds of times.

But she had never been permitted to open the door.

Robert removed an old key from his file.

"This was kept in a bank vault for twenty-two years."

He placed it in Elena's hand.

Vivian, standing several feet away, suddenly panicked.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

"Do not open that room."

Adrian frowned.

"Why?"

Vivian didn't answer.

Elena slowly inserted the key.

Click.

The door opened.

The first thing she smelled was jasmine.

Her mother's perfume.

Elena stopped breathing.

The room had been preserved exactly as it had been twenty-two years ago.

White curtains.

A large bed.

A pink blanket.

A dressing table.

And a photograph of Isabella.

Young.

Beautiful.

Pregnant.

Happy.

Elena walked toward the bed.

She touched the blanket.

Then she buried her face in it.

"Mama..."

Her voice broke.

"I found home."

Behind her, nobody spoke.

Adrian watched her.

For the first time, he understood why her presence had unsettled him that morning.

It wasn't because she was beautiful.

It wasn't because she was suddenly an heiress.

It was because he had spent three years looking at her without actually seeing her.

And now he couldn't look away.

He turned toward Robert.

"From today, no one calls her a maid."

Robert nodded.

"Agreed."

Elena slowly wiped her tears.

She looked at Chloe.

Then at Vivian.

Then at Adrian.

For three years, she had answered every command with:

Yes, Madam.

Sorry, Madam.

I'll do it, Madam.

Today was different.

She stood straighter.

Her voice was quiet.

But it didn't shake.

"Chloe."

Chloe stared at her.

"You have until six o'clock to move your things into the guest house."

Chloe's mouth opened.

Elena continued.

"You will not enter my mother's room or my mother's house."

She looked around.

"You will not touch her belongings."

Then she looked directly into Chloe's eyes.

"And you will never call me a maid again."

Chloe's face twisted with anger.

"You little..."

Adrian stepped forward.

"She said six o'clock."

Chloe looked at her brother.

Adrian's expression was cold.

"I suggest you start packing."

Downstairs, the old wall clock struck twelve.

Elena looked around the room that had belonged to her mother.

Twenty-two years ago, she had been born.

Twenty-two years later, she had finally come home.

But she didn't know yet that inheriting the Laurent mansion wouldn't be the easiest part of her new life.

By six o'clock, the Laurent mansion had been divided in two. The main house was bright, silent, and now belonged to Elena. The guest house was smaller, older, and had a leaking tap in the kitchen. That was where Vivian and Chloe had been forced to drag their suitcases. Vivian had screamed for nearly three hours. "You can't do this to me!" she shouted. "I am Mrs. Laurent! I have lived in this house for twenty years!" Attorney Cole didn't even raise his voice. He simply showed the police officers Vivian called claiming she's been evicted from her home, the court order. "Mrs. Laurent, you have two choices. You can move to the guest house willingly, or I can have you removed for trespassing on Ms. Elena's private property. The choice is yours." Vivian had stared at him with pure hatred. Then she moved. Elena didn't watch. She locked herself inside her mother's bedroom—her bedroom now and sat on the edge of the enormous bed. Everything felt unfamiliar. The mattres
