Chapter 2

Autor: Zoey
Vincent walked in, and just as I was about to look up, a piece of clothing was tossed onto my head, blocking my vision.

“Selena, you’re a mother. Can’t you be a little more responsible? Why is Liam wearing clothes with a hole in them?”

I pulled the piece of clothing off my head and glanced at it. It was Liam’s jacket, with a tear scraped open at the elbow.

“He probably scraped it on the fence in the backyard this afternoon,” I said calmly.

Vincent’s brow furrowed. “How can you be so careless when it comes to taking care of the kids? How do you call yourself a good mother?”

“A mother? Vincent, Liam is not my child. And because you enable him, he’s never treated me as a mother either. I’m afraid he sees me as nothing more than a servant who takes care of him!”

I raised my hand and threw the clothes onto the floor. “Vincent, I’ve had enough of this life. I want a divorce.”

Suddenly, a look of realization flashed through Vincent’s eyes. “I remember now. Today is our sixth anniversary. I’m sorry, Selena. I forgot. I promise you, we’ll definitely celebrate next year!”

Instead of arguing further, I just calmly repeated, “I will have my lawyer deliver the divorce papers to your office.”

“Alright, here’s a card. Buy yourself whatever gift you want.”

He pulled a black card from his wallet and stuffed it down my collar. “Stop throwing a fit. Be good.”

With that, he pushed the door open and walked out.

The black card slid from my collar and fell silently onto the carpet. I stood there for a long time before letting out a self-deprecating smirk. So, to him, I was no different from a servant who could be dismissed with money.

I turned around and went to my daughter’s room. My daughter, Grace, was sitting on the bed, hugging a teddy bear.

“Mommy, did you get into a fight with Daddy again?”

I walked over, sat on the edge of the bed, and stroked her hair. “We didn’t fight. I’m going to leave your dad. Would you like to come with me?”

Grace’s eyes lit up instantly, and she leaned in to ask softly, “Really? Mommy, I don’t want to stay here anymore either. Every time Liam is unhappy, Daddy accuses me of making him angry and makes me apologize to him. As long as Liam wants my toys, Daddy makes me give them to him.”

She counted on her fingers, her voice soft. “After we leave, can I keep what’s mine?”

Tears instantly welled up in my eyes. I pulled Grace tightly into my arms and nodded.

“Yes, baby. I promise that from now on, you can keep everything that’s yours.”

Grace’s words destroyed the one last reason I had to maintain this marriage.

Once Grace fell fast asleep, I pulled out an old phone from under my pillow and dialed a number I knew by heart.

“Leo, make your move.”

Grace slowly opened her eyes and asked in a small voice, “Mommy, what about Daddy?”“He won’t ever bother us again,” I replied, gently caressing her head. “It’s all in the past now.”She nodded, as if she sort of understood, and leaned back into my arms. When we returned to the apartment, Leo was already waiting for me.“Principessa, everything has been taken care of,” Leo said. “Vincent has been turned over to the police, along with all the evidence. He won’t get off lightly. Also, regarding the true background of Evelyn and Liam, do you want me to look into it?”I thought about it for a moment, then shook my head. “There’s no need. Evelyn is already dead, so digging into her past is meaningless. As for Liam…”I sighed softly. “He’s a victim in all this too. Just find out who his biological father is. If the man is willing to raise him, send Liam over. If not, contact a social worker and find him a good family to adopt him.”“Understood.”A few days later, Leo tracked down Lia

The Rossi Group collapsed, and the news was flooded with reports of its bankruptcy and liquidation. However, Vincent seemed to have vanished into thin air, and no one could find him anywhere.Leo sent a team of people to search every place Vincent could possibly be, but found no trace of him. Vincent’s phone was off, his bank cards were frozen, and even his old drinking buddies had no idea where he had gone.An uneasy feeling crept up in me. Vincent wasn’t the type to give up easily. When driven to a dead end, he was capable of doing anything.“Step up the security around the apartment,” I told Leo.“Yes, Principessa. I’ve done it.” Leo paused for a moment. “Principessa, do you suspect Vincent might go after your daughter?”“It never hurts to be careful,” I replied flatly. “He has nothing left now. If he wants to turn the tables, targeting Grace is his only move.”“Understood. I’ll send more men.”However, Vincent didn’t go after Grace; he came straight for me.That afternoon,

The next morning, when Grace woke up, she looked a little lost. She sat on the soft, spacious bed and looked around the unfamiliar room with her wide, round eyes. It took her a good while before she finally turned to me and asked, “Mommy, are we never going back?”“Yes.” I set breakfast on the nightstand, smiled, and patted her head as I said, “From now on, this will be our home.”“Awesome!”Grace bounced up instantly, then quickly covered her mouth and giggled secretly, as if afraid of being too loud. Seeing how happy she was, I felt everything had been worth it.After accompanying Grace through breakfast, I had the housekeeper take her downstairs to play in the garden while I went to the study.Leo Costa was already sitting inside. My father had appointed him to me, and he had been with me for many years. All those times I secretly paved the way for Vincent, Leo was the one executing the orders.“Principessa.” Leo stood up and gave me a slight nod.“Sit.” I walked behind the

He stumbled forward, reaching out to grab my arm, but two bodyguards immediately stepped in, pinning him firmly in place.“Selena!” he shouted my name, his eyes bloodshot and his voice filled with a panic I had never heard from him before. “You can’t do this! The Rossi Group is my life’s work! You can’t just destroy it!”“Your life’s work?” I raised an eyebrow at him. “Vincent, you know deep down that everything in the Rossi Group came from the Capelli family. The seed capital was mine, the connections belonged to my family, and the distribution channels were provided by my father. Your so-called ‘self-made’ success was nothing more than climbing up on the shoulders of the Capelli family.”I hurled the documents at his feet, sending the papers scattering across the floor.“Now, I’m simply taking back what’s mine.”He stared at the documents on the ground before looking up at me, a desperate plea slowly creeping into his eyes.“Selena, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have said those thin

Vincent slumped weakly against the bookshelf, the color draining from his face. He stared at the black-and-gold rose pendant around my neck, his eyes filled with shock, disbelief, and a flicker of fear he hadn’t even noticed himself.“Capelli…”He repeated the name over and over, as if trying to carve the name into his memory.“You’re… a Capelli?”In New Haven, everybody knew the Capelli family.Having dominated the city’s underworld for nearly a century, the family was the uncrowned king operating in a legal gray area; even members of Congress treated lightly around them.In all his years of striving, Vincent had heard countless legends about the Capelli family and had tried innumerable times to strike up a connection with them. However, never in his wildest dreams did he think that the wife he had shared a bed with was actually the daughter of the Capelli family. My fingertips stroked the cold gold rose on my pendant as I watched him, looking completely lost.“Who else did yo

Vincent’s study was locked year-round, and no one was allowed inside except him. To me, however, that kind of old-fashioned mechanical lock was no different from a toy.I walked up to the lock, my fingers moving quickly as I spun the combination dial a few times. With a click, the door swung open.I glanced inside and saw important documents like the company’s stock equity certificates. Aside from those, there was an entire drawer packed with letters. They were all written by Vincent to Evelyn Mancini.I pulled one out at random. On the yellowed paper was his familiar handwriting.“Evelyn, our son is doing great, so please don’t worry. I’ll make sure Selena and Grace never mistreat him.“Liam can say ‘Daddy’ now. When he’s a bit older, I’ll tell him that you’re his real mother.“Once the situation in the company stabilizes, I will transfer all the shares under Liam’s name. Everything I have should belong to our son anyway.”As I read through them one by one, I felt sick to my st
