Chapter 1

Vincent Rossi walked in, carrying the chilling cold of the outside air with him.

Today was our sixth wedding anniversary, which I'd reminded him of this morning. Yet, he didn’t even glance at the candleholders and dinner set out on the dining table. Instead, he walked straight over, bent down, and pulled his adopted son, Liam Rossi, onto his lap.

“Did you have a good day today? Did Mom bully you?”

That was his daily routine question. In the past, I always thought he was joking, but after dying and being sent back in time, I finally understood that those were warnings. He was constantly terrified that Liam would be mistreated while he was away.

Only after Liam shook his head did Vincent finally set him down, relieved. Then, Vincent turned to me and said, “Selena, make sure you personally iron Liam’s equestrian attire for the equestrian club tomorrow. None of those servants are as careful as you.”

Used to that treatment, Liam trotted back to his room, clutched his newly bought equestrian attire, and tossed it right at me.

I looked down at the brand-new outfit in my arms, its price tag still attached, and didn’t move.

Vincent frowned. “What are you waiting for? Go on.”

At that moment, the matter-of-fact look on his face overlapped with the detached look on the photo on his tombstone from my previous life. The next second, I stood up and tossed the equestrian attire straight into the burning fireplace.

“Vincent,” I said calmly, looking up at him. “I am your wife; I’m not your housekeeper and certainly not Liam’s nanny.”

The smile on his face slowly vanished. He stood up, towering over me as he looked down.

“Why are you kicking up a fuss? All I’m asking is for you to iron a piece of clothing. Is there any need to give me an attitude for it?”

“I’m not kicking up a fuss.” I looked him dead in the eye and said, “Vincent, let’s get a divorce. I’m taking our daughter and leaving.”

As if he had just heard the biggest joke in the world, he sneered. “Leave? Where could you possibly go? Selena, if you leave me, you won’t even be able to feed yourself or our daughter.”

He nodded at the bodyguards standing nearby. “Take Mrs. Rossi back to her bedroom to calm her down.”

Tony and Dom stepped forward immediately, pinning my arms from both sides. I struggled slightly, but they only tightened their grip.

Dom spoke in a flat but firm tone, “Mrs. Rossi, please come with us upstairs.”

They half-supported, half-escorted me back to the bedroom. Vincent didn’t even glance at me again, merely waving his hand in annoyance.

Outside, I could hear the servants whispering among themselves.

“Mrs. Rossi sure is ungrateful. Even with a husband as good as he is, she’s still not satisfied.”

“So what if she has to take care of one extra kid? She relies on him to support her anyway, so it’s only right that she does these things.”

Him? Support me?

I found the comment utterly ridiculous.

Back when Vincent and I first got together, he was just a penniless nobody with nothing to his name. It was my savings that funded his startup. I was the one who secretly directed the Capelli mafia family’s power to wipe out his competitors, and I was the one who managed all his household affairs whenever he was too busy to handle his own life.

Yet now, in everyone’s eyes, I was a parasite leeching off my husband.

Those people would probably never know that the woman they claimed was entirely dependent on her husband could cost every person in the house their livelihood with just a few words.

Grace slowly opened her eyes and asked in a small voice, “Mommy, what about Daddy?”“He won’t ever bother us again,” I replied, gently caressing her head. “It’s all in the past now.”She nodded, as if she sort of understood, and leaned back into my arms. When we returned to the apartment, Leo was already waiting for me.“Principessa, everything has been taken care of,” Leo said. “Vincent has been turned over to the police, along with all the evidence. He won’t get off lightly. Also, regarding the true background of Evelyn and Liam, do you want me to look into it?”I thought about it for a moment, then shook my head. “There’s no need. Evelyn is already dead, so digging into her past is meaningless. As for Liam…”I sighed softly. “He’s a victim in all this too. Just find out who his biological father is. If the man is willing to raise him, send Liam over. If not, contact a social worker and find him a good family to adopt him.”“Understood.”A few days later, Leo tracked down Lia

The Rossi Group collapsed, and the news was flooded with reports of its bankruptcy and liquidation. However, Vincent seemed to have vanished into thin air, and no one could find him anywhere.Leo sent a team of people to search every place Vincent could possibly be, but found no trace of him. Vincent’s phone was off, his bank cards were frozen, and even his old drinking buddies had no idea where he had gone.An uneasy feeling crept up in me. Vincent wasn’t the type to give up easily. When driven to a dead end, he was capable of doing anything.“Step up the security around the apartment,” I told Leo.“Yes, Principessa. I’ve done it.” Leo paused for a moment. “Principessa, do you suspect Vincent might go after your daughter?”“It never hurts to be careful,” I replied flatly. “He has nothing left now. If he wants to turn the tables, targeting Grace is his only move.”“Understood. I’ll send more men.”However, Vincent didn’t go after Grace; he came straight for me.That afternoon,

The next morning, when Grace woke up, she looked a little lost. She sat on the soft, spacious bed and looked around the unfamiliar room with her wide, round eyes. It took her a good while before she finally turned to me and asked, “Mommy, are we never going back?”“Yes.” I set breakfast on the nightstand, smiled, and patted her head as I said, “From now on, this will be our home.”“Awesome!”Grace bounced up instantly, then quickly covered her mouth and giggled secretly, as if afraid of being too loud. Seeing how happy she was, I felt everything had been worth it.After accompanying Grace through breakfast, I had the housekeeper take her downstairs to play in the garden while I went to the study.Leo Costa was already sitting inside. My father had appointed him to me, and he had been with me for many years. All those times I secretly paved the way for Vincent, Leo was the one executing the orders.“Principessa.” Leo stood up and gave me a slight nod.“Sit.” I walked behind the

He stumbled forward, reaching out to grab my arm, but two bodyguards immediately stepped in, pinning him firmly in place.“Selena!” he shouted my name, his eyes bloodshot and his voice filled with a panic I had never heard from him before. “You can’t do this! The Rossi Group is my life’s work! You can’t just destroy it!”“Your life’s work?” I raised an eyebrow at him. “Vincent, you know deep down that everything in the Rossi Group came from the Capelli family. The seed capital was mine, the connections belonged to my family, and the distribution channels were provided by my father. Your so-called ‘self-made’ success was nothing more than climbing up on the shoulders of the Capelli family.”I hurled the documents at his feet, sending the papers scattering across the floor.“Now, I’m simply taking back what’s mine.”He stared at the documents on the ground before looking up at me, a desperate plea slowly creeping into his eyes.“Selena, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have said those thin

Vincent slumped weakly against the bookshelf, the color draining from his face. He stared at the black-and-gold rose pendant around my neck, his eyes filled with shock, disbelief, and a flicker of fear he hadn’t even noticed himself.“Capelli…”He repeated the name over and over, as if trying to carve the name into his memory.“You’re… a Capelli?”In New Haven, everybody knew the Capelli family.Having dominated the city’s underworld for nearly a century, the family was the uncrowned king operating in a legal gray area; even members of Congress treated lightly around them.In all his years of striving, Vincent had heard countless legends about the Capelli family and had tried innumerable times to strike up a connection with them. However, never in his wildest dreams did he think that the wife he had shared a bed with was actually the daughter of the Capelli family. My fingertips stroked the cold gold rose on my pendant as I watched him, looking completely lost.“Who else did yo

Vincent’s study was locked year-round, and no one was allowed inside except him. To me, however, that kind of old-fashioned mechanical lock was no different from a toy.I walked up to the lock, my fingers moving quickly as I spun the combination dial a few times. With a click, the door swung open.I glanced inside and saw important documents like the company’s stock equity certificates. Aside from those, there was an entire drawer packed with letters. They were all written by Vincent to Evelyn Mancini.I pulled one out at random. On the yellowed paper was his familiar handwriting.“Evelyn, our son is doing great, so please don’t worry. I’ll make sure Selena and Grace never mistreat him.“Liam can say ‘Daddy’ now. When he’s a bit older, I’ll tell him that you’re his real mother.“Once the situation in the company stabilizes, I will transfer all the shares under Liam’s name. Everything I have should belong to our son anyway.”As I read through them one by one, I felt sick to my st
