Chapter two

PHOEBE'S POV.

(August 18th Wednesday.)

A loud sigh came out of Emily. "So, she's pregnant."

I nodded. "Yeah. Which means she's stuck with him."

Emily took a sip of her coffee and dropped it back down. "I have a thought, Phoebe."

I furrowed my brows. "What's that?"

"Let's investigate. Let's investigate Leonard, and what he wants. Alexa might not be seeing this, but there's something else about him that she doesn't know about."

Her words blanked me into thoughts. She made a lot of sense. Alexa likes seeing the good in people, so she never cares about what bad things they've done in the past, or if they have a dark past.

If we could just help her into the light.

Although... Won't we be meddling in her business?

A sigh came out of me at the thought.

"You seem to be against it." Emily noticed.

I shook my head. "Not really. I feel we'll be meddling, and what if we're wrong?'

She shrugged. "Then we'll know we are. If we are wrong, then we'll keep shut, but what if we're right, and Leonard is up to no good? That guy right from the day I met him, seemed unsettled about the marriage."

I nodded remembering it all. "Yeah, I remember. He never smiled once."

"Exactly," Emily affirmed. "We have to help Alexa. The contract, Leonard, and now the accident I find weird, there's something going on."

I shook my head. "The accident could be ordinary."

She smiled. "No, it's not. I was able to check if something was wrong with the car, since no one except Alexa knows what happened, and guess what I found out."

"What?" I asked curiously.

"The brakes were messed with."

My eyes widened. "What?"

She nodded. "You heard right. A friend was the one who helped. I was shocked when I discovered it."

"You mean the accident was planned?" I asked in disbelief, cause this information made things a lot different.

She nodded. "Although we can't tell her yet until we discover what really went wrong."

I nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we'll do just that..." I trailed as a thought came to mind. "Although, do you think Leonard was involved with the accident?" I probed doubtfully.

She shrugged. "I don't think so, but I think he could be a factor."

I was caught in a net of curiosity at the word 'factor.' "You think someone out there is not happy about Leo marrying Alexa?" I speculated uncertainly.

She nodded. "That's right. It might be someone he was in love with because I'm pretty sure he had a girlfriend before finding out he was betrothed." She disclosed with conviction, and she was right to be sure, cause it's very much possible.

My whole being was suffused with the reality that dawned on me. The fact that we are getting somewhere in helping Alexa has elevated my mood.

"We have to find out who she is, Phoebe." Emily asserted.

I nodded agreeably. "You are the detective here, so it won't be hard for you. Your job is to find out things." I stated in quiet amazement.

She just rolled her eyes. "Yeah, right, although it is a very simple thing to do.'

My brows snapped together at the information. I was pulled against myself as the words confused me, especially for the fact that she said it at all.

She sighed noticing my confusion, then shook her head. "Well, it's easy to just visit his I*, or F******k to see a picture of his girlfriend, and find out who she is."

I gaped at the realization.

"You know, since we already know Leo, it will be easy to find out about his ex-girlfriend." She made it known.

I nodded getting it. "Sorry, I didn't quite catch up." I justified.

She nodded. "Figured. And that's exactly what you'll do."

My eyes sparkled with excitement. "Really?"

She scoffed. "Of course. I can't be the only one working on it."

I smiled. "OK, then. What will you do?"

"Investigate the accident. What that Jane Doe what's-her-name did was attempted murder, and has to go to jail for that." She revealed.

I nodded understanding it all.

"It's just that we could be wrong, since we are still standing on a loose thread, and working only with what we think. We don't know anything yet, except someone planned to kill Alexa." She said with a gloomy sigh.

"Still that would be a step, and a step makes a journey, and with a journey, there's always a destination. You should know that." I reassured her.

She nodded. "You're right. Go work on that, so we can find her, and ask questions. And also keep an eye on Alexa. We don't want things of this sort to repeat themselves."

"Aye aye, Captain!" I saluted.

A mirthless laugh came out of her. "Sadly, I'm not the captain. Just a detective."

I shrugged. "You're good at your job, Em, so I'm sure in the near future, you can be promoted."

She nodded. "Yeah, but that's in the near future."

I nodded. "Yeah. Whatever."

She just shook her head. "I should leave."

I nodded.

"We should go meet Alexa in the evening together since she's awake." She cajoled even though she knows that was not something I'm reluctant about. Although she probably thinks since it's her turn, I'd reject it.

I smiled. "Why not?"

She smiled back. "Rad. Tomorrow we'll start working on things. Gotta get back to work."

ALEXA'S POV.

Looking around me, the fact that I'm in a hospital doesn't seem to get to me, although it brings back bad memories, but I've learned to move on from it. After all, hospitals are inevitable since everyone gets sick. The doctors that are made up of it save lives, so they shouldn't be hated by the ones they couldn't save.

And now, the accident that I can't remember, they saved me, and my.....and my unborn baby.

My mouth curved into a smile at the thought, as I placed my hand on my stomach. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that I'm pregnant. I'm about to become a mother.

The happiness glowing inside me at the thought was great. I don't know if I have ever felt so happy, or if I have, then I can't remember.

Marrying Leo wasn't really a happy thing for me, since I didn't know him, but then he turned out to be a good, reliable person after the marriage.

Funny thing was, he didn't let out a flaw even though deep within him, he wasn't happy either.

My thoughts were, he knows we both felt the same, and there was no going back from it, so he just wants to really make things work between us since we're already in it.

Probably why I developed feelings for him. Feelings that I still can't comprehend.

The funny part is, he never wanted to have sex with me throughout the month of our marriage. It was weird since he was a guy. A guy who owns a famous clubhouse where he was. But anyways, we are married, so it's inevitable.

One thing I know for sure is he is worthy to be trusted as my husband, especially for the fact that he's my godfather's son.

I looked heavenward wondering if my parents watches me, and sees how my life unfolds.

"It's turning out for the better, right?" I asked lowly in a perpetually tired voice.

I smiled faintly knowing there won't be an answer, and I'm just staring at the ceiling.

The door suddenly opened making me avert my gaze toward it. I smiled seeing Leo.

He closed the door and walked closer to me with a fancy bag in his hands which I'd become interested in.

"What's in it?" I asked curiously.

He dropped it on a vanity a little bit close to my bed and looked at me. "I don't think that's a greeting, babe."

I gaped. "Oh. Welcome."

He just smiled, walked more closer to me, and laid a kiss on my lips which I returned, then he let go. "First, how are you?" He asked.

"I'm fine," I replied.

He nodded. "Good to hear." He sat on the chair by my left-hand side. "When I called, you didn't tell me what I should get for you, so I just brought fruits, since you take them a lot." He seemed a bit nervous, probably thinking I won't be satisfied.

I gave him a smile. "It's perfect, Leo."

He nodded and stood up. "Let me go wash..."

"Wait." I stopped him.

He turned to look at me. "What is it?"

"You went to your dad, right?" I asked hopefully.

He nodded. "Yeah. I already informed him."

I equally nodded feeling relieved. "I know it was hard, since you don't get along with him, but he..."

"Had to know. I know." He completed.

I sighed wanting to bring back an issue he's been avoiding. "Can you sit first? The fruits can wait."

His brows furrowed, his eyes darted from left to right, and then he looked at me. "Do you have something important to talk about?"

I nodded. "Yeah."

"Please if it's about my dad, and I, forget it." He dismissed.

I looked at him with disbelief. "Why can't you talk about this? I'm your wife, right?"

"Maybe because you don't have the permit yet." He snapped.

I was taken aback by it. "When? How long, then?"

He shrugged. "Maybe never."

"Then maybe I'll ask your dad about it."

"Don't even try it."

My body went numb at the deep voice he used on me, and his eyes... His eyes were wild, as he glared at me. Not what it used to be. He was angry, and I was left short of words.

He blinked away obviously noticing my discomfort. "I'm sorry."

I lowered my eyes. "Maybe you're not ready to talk about it yet," I said, though wondering how bad it really is.

He looked at me. "Maybe."

I nodded and looked away from him still in shock at the other side of him he just portrayed at me. That was new.

I haven't brought out the idea of wanting to talk to his father about it, because I believe one day he would. I shouldn't have. I really should be careful since I don't know what he really has gone through, though that is sad.

God knows what made him agree to marry me if he hates his father this much.

"I, um..." He trailed making me look at him. "Let me go wash the fruits, and slice them for you."

I nodded. "Yeah, thanks."

He sighed, took the bag, and walked out of the room.

A huge sigh came out of me making me realize I'd been holding my breath since his sudden anger.

When is he gonna be able to confide in me? Does he not trust me enough to do that? When am I gonna be worthy of his trust?

It saddens me to know that my husband can't talk to me about his problems.

What really is up with him, and his father?
