Of course he was. I looked at him. Then at my mother.

“I need the restroom.”

I turned before she could respond. I didn't go to the restroom. I slipped away. I got into my car and drove home.

I ignored the entire future they had apparently planned for me. For once, I wanted something that belonged only to me. Silence.

Momo was waiting at the door when I arrived. The moment she saw me, her little tail started moving.

I picked her up. “Hi, baby.”

Her warm body pressed against my chest. And that was it. I broke.

I carried her to my bedroom, climbed onto the bed, and held her tightly against me. The tears came without warning.

I cried for my grandfather. For the empty space he left behind. For the future I didn't recognize anymore. And for reasons I didn't want to admit yet— for the man who wasn't there.

Thirty minutes later, the doorbell rang. I almost ignored it. Then I checked the camera. My heart stopped. Sam was finally here. I opened the door immediately.

“Caleste…” He looked exhausted.

His hair was messy from the drive. His jacket was still covered with traces of dust from the road.

His eyes found mine. The warmth disappeared from his face.

“I’m so sorry.” His voice cracked. “I was late.”

I shook my head. “You're here now.”

I tried to smile. “Thank you.”

He stared at me for a moment. Then he stepped closer.

“You don't have to be strong in front of me.” His hand settled gently on my shoulder.

The touch was warm. It was warm and familiar.

I looked down. “Did you eat?”

He blinked. “No.”

“As expected.”

A small smile appeared on his face. “Let me cook.”

He walked inside before I could argue. I followed him into the apartment, then settled onto the sofa with Momo.

Sam went straight to the kitchen. He didn't ask what I wanted. He already knew. He opened my refrigerator. Checked the cabinets. Rolled up his sleeves. And started cooking.

I watched him from the sofa. For a moment, everything felt normal. Then his eyes wandered around my apartment.

He noticed the photographs. The large wall filled with pictures of my grandfather and me. Photos of Momo. A few pictures from work. Then he saw one of us.

Sam and me. Taken last year at his family's house.

He smiled. “You finally put that one up.”

I looked at the photograph. “I like it.”

“Me too.”

He went back to cooking. I looked away.

Five years, and he still didn't know. Maybe that was my fault. Maybe I had never given him a reason to know. Or maybe I was simply too afraid to find out what would happen if I did.

The smell of food slowly filled the apartment. It was comforting. So comforting that I didn't realize when my eyes became heavy.

The last thing I remembered was hearing Sam move around the kitchen. When I opened my eyes again, I was still on the sofa.

Sam was standing over me. “You fell asleep.”

I rubbed my eyes. “How long?”

“Not long.” He smiled. “You should eat.”

Before I could answer, the doorbell rang.

Sam frowned. “Were you expecting someone?”

“No.”

He walked toward the door. I sat up. Then he opened it. Adrian stood outside. My stomach dropped.

“I was waiting for you to have dinner with me,” Adrian said.

His eyes moved past Sam and into my apartment. “Your mother didn't mention you lived with someone else.”

Sam immediately shook his head. “Oh, no. I don't live here.”

He smiled politely. “I live at the Aerie. I'm just helping her with dinner.”

Adrian studied him. “You are?”

“Samuel Hart.” Sam extended his hand.

“I work with Caleste at Horizon Global.”

Adrian didn't take it immediately. His eyes moved toward me. “Co-worker?”

The single word carried something I couldn't quite identify.

“Why are you here?” I asked Adrian coldly.

“It's natural that I know where my fiancée lives.”

Silence. Sam's hand slowly dropped. His eyes moved from Adrian to me. “Fiancée?”

I couldn't answer. Adrian did.“Yes.”

He looked at Sam. “I'm Adrian Beaumont.”

Then he looked at me. “We're engaged.”

Sam stared at him. Then at me. His expression changed. There was no anger not jealousy. Just confusion. A terrible, innocent confusion.

“We're not officially engaged,” I said quickly.

Adrian's expression remained calm. “We made it official today.”

He paused. “The ceremony will take place later.”

Sam looked at me again. For five years, I had imagined what it would be like if he ever found out how I felt about him.

I had imagined surprise. Shock. Maybe even jealousy. I had never imagined this.

Sam simply looked lost. “Oh.”

He forced a small smile. “Well…”

He glanced between us. “I think I'm not supposed to be here.”

My heart sank. “Sam—”

“Anyway.” His smile widened, but something about it felt wrong.

“Congratulations, Caleste.”

Then he turned around. And walked away.

I stood there watching him disappear down the hallway. I wanted to call him back. I wanted to tell him that this wasn't what it looked like. That I didn't want Adrian.

That the only person I had wanted to see today was him.But the words never came.

Because there was one question I was too afraid to ask. If Sam had cared about me the way I cared about him...

Would he have looked more hurt?

Nerissa's POVThe mansion felt livelier after William and Lily returned from their holiday. They had spent the morning telling us about the places they'd visited, while Lily moved from one room to another with the energy of someone making up for being away, checking on the flowers, asking the staff what she had missed, and complaining that William had packed far too much for a trip that had apparently been perfect anyway. The children were even happier to have them back. Maya had barely left Lily's side since breakfast, while Noah and Luna had already found several reasons to follow William around the house.By late morning, I found myself looking for Vance.I expected to find him in his office, but when I passed the study, I caught the sound of Ethan's laughter through the half-open door. I paused long enough to look inside and found Vance sitting at the long table with his laptop open, several documents spread beside it, while Ethan was on the rug surrounded by wooden blocks.Vance

I lowered my eyes to my cup. “You already heard most of it yesterday.”“I heard the facts.” His voice was quiet, but more deliberate than before. “I want to know the rest.”I turned the cup slowly between my hands, watching the ice shift inside. “My father died when I was young. There isn't much more to tell.”“What do you remember?”I thought about it for a moment, searching through memories that had grown thinner with time. “Not enough. I remember pieces of him. His hands. His voice sometimes, although I'm not sure if that's actually my memory anymore or something my grandfather told me often enough that I started imagining it.” A faint smile touched my lips. “I remember waiting for my grandfather to visit and listening to him talk about my father.”Sam didn't interrupt, so I continued.“When you're a child, you don't really understand what it means to grow up without someone. You just notice that other children have fathers and you don't. My grandfather was the closest thing I had t

The day after our conversation with Adrian felt nothing like the evening before. There were no business advisers waiting for us, no messages from my mother, and no reason for either of us to discuss Ashworth or the marriage. Sam had decided that since we were technically on our honeymoon, we were going to spend the day doing absolutely nothing useful. I hadn't argued. We had walked along the waterfront for most of the morning, stopped at a small café for lunch, and wandered through the market afterward without buying much. Sam had somehow managed to turn even choosing where to eat into an argument, mostly because he insisted I took too long to decide and I insisted he changed his mind every five minutes.By the time we reached the open park near the water, the afternoon sun had softened, and I was beginning to think the day might actually remain peaceful. Then Sam stopped walking.I took another step before realizing he wasn't beside me anymore. When I turned, he was staring across the

Adrian shifted the conversation toward Ashworth, asking how I was handling everything since my grandfather's death. I told him it was busy but manageable and explained that I was still reviewing Philip's investments with the advisers who had worked with him.“Your grandfather spent decades building those holdings,” Adrian said. “He was never interested in collecting companies just for the sake of it. Horizon, the environmental projects, the healthcare investments—he put his money behind things he thought would matter years from now.”“That was my grandfather.”Adrian nodded. “And now you're carrying the position he spent decades building. You're the largest Ashworth shareholder, whether you're ready for it or not.”I lowered my eyes to the table. “That's the problem. Everyone seems to think I should already know exactly what I'm doing.”“You didn't exactly have time to learn slowly,” he said. “Your grandfather was gone, your mother expected you to step into the role, and suddenly every

“I don't think Sam has a problem with you being here.”The words came out before Sam could answer, and both men turned toward me. I set my glass down and tried to keep my expression casual. “Sam isn't the kind of person who holds grudges just because someone has made things complicated in the past. If you interrupted our dinner, he'd probably just see it as an interruption.”Sam's eyebrows lifted slightly, but he didn't contradict me. Adrian glanced at him. “Is that so?”Sam gave a small shrug. “She's probably right.”That seemed to satisfy Adrian. He leaned back in his chair, and for a moment, I thought the subject was settled. Instead, his attention returned to me.“When was the last time you spoke to your mother?”I hadn't expected the question. “Before the wedding.”“She hasn't called?”“She sent a few messages, and I replied.” I glanced down at my plate. “We haven't actually spoken.”Adrian nodded slowly. “She's still upset.”“She'll get over it.” I tried to sound more certain tha

“Maybe it was because it was you.”I didn't know how to respond to that.Sam rubbed his thumb over his knuckle and looked down before adding quietly, “You've been around me for five years, Caleste. I got used to having you there. You became familiar to me. Not just because you're my friend. I know you. Or at least…”He hesitated, then gave a small shrug. “I know you better than I know most people.”My fingers tightened slightly around the glass. I lowered my eyes, letting his words settle somewhere I didn't want to examine too closely.“Yeah,” I said after a moment, keeping my gaze on the glass. “Because I'm your friend. Naturally.”“Maybe.”Neither of us said anything after that. Sam leaned back in his chair while I took another sip of water, and after a moment, he glanced toward the clock before looking back at me.“Are you hungry?”“A little.”“Then let's have dinner together.” He pushed himself to his feet and reached for his jacket. “There's a restaurant downstairs.
