I stood at the door, staring at Adrian. “I think you should leave.”

He didn't move. “Your mother asked me to make sure you got home safely.”

“I don't need you to make sure I'm safe.”

His expression remained calm. “Caleste.”

“I'm serious.”

He studied me for a moment.

Then he nodded. “All right.”

He turned toward the hallway. I thought that was the end of it. Then he stopped. “Dinner tomorrow?”

I stared at him. “There’s not going to be a dinner tomorrow.”

“We'll see.”

My jaw tightened. “There’s nothing to see.”

He looked at me for another second before finally walking away. I didn't wait until he reached the elevator. I slammed the door shut. The sound echoed through my apartment.

I leaned against it and closed my eyes. For a few seconds, I simply stood there. My grandfather was dead. My mother had decided who I was going to marry. And the man I'd secretly loved for five years had just congratulated me on it.

My phone rang. I looked at the screen. Mother.

I didn't answer. The call ended. A message appeared almost immediately.

Mother: Call me.

Mother: Why did you send Adrian away like that?

I stared at the screen. Another message arrived.

Mother: Don't make this difficult, Caleste. You and Adrian need to marry soon.

I laughed bitterly. Even now, she was more concerned about the engagement than the fact that I had just buried my grandfather. I called her anyway. She answered on the first ring.

“Finally.”

“Grandfather has been dead for less than a day.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you already planning my wedding?”

“Because your grandfather left the company to you.”

“He left me a company. Not a husband.”

“Without the Beaumont family, you may not be able to keep it.”

I closed my eyes. “Is that all you care about?”

“This isn't about feelings.”

“Of course it isn't.”

“Caleste—”

“I need time.”

“You don't have time.”

I opened my eyes. For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I said quietly, “Goodnight, Mother.”

“Caleste, wait—”

I ended the call. Then I turned off my phone. Silence finally returned to me. But instead of relief, all I could hear was Sam's voice. "Anyway, congratulations, Caleste."

And somehow, those two words hurt more than anything my mother had said.

I tried to sleep. I pulled the blanket over my head. Sam had never promised me anything. He had never told me he loved me. The problem wasn't Sam. The problem was me. I had spent five years building a love story inside my own head and somehow expected him to know the script.

By morning, my eyes were burning from exhaustion. I turned my phone back on. Thirty-seven messages. Most were from my mother. I deleted them without reading. Then I got dressed and went to work. Because apparently, inheriting a billion-dollar company didn't give me permission to fall apart.

Horizon Global was already busy when I arrived. People moved through the lobby with coffee cups and phones pressed against their ears. The screens displayed financial reports. Employees rushed toward elevators. Everything was normal.

I hated it. My grandfather had died yesterday. Yet the world kept moving. I walked toward the elevator. Then I stopped mid air.

Sam was there. He was leaning against the reception desk, talking to one of the junior analysts. He spotted me halfway through the conversation.

His face immediately brightened. “Morning.”

I forced my feet to keep moving. “Morning.”

His eyes swept over my face. Then his smile faded. “You didn't sleep.”

I looked away. “Not much.”

He reached behind him and picked up a coffee. “Here.”

I stared at it. My usual.

“You got this for me?”

“You always get this when you have an early meeting.”

I took the cup. “Thanks.”

He studied me for another second.

“You should've stayed home.”

“I have work.”

“You also have a funeral hangover.”

I gave him a tired look. “That isn't a thing.”

“It is now.” A small smile tugged at his mouth.

I almost smiled back. Almost.

He picked up a folder from the desk. “Vance wants the Harrington figures checked before the afternoon meeting. I already went through the first draft. There's one number I'm not convinced about.”

He handed it to me.

I looked down at the folder. “You checked it?”

“Last night.”

“You went through it after driving for four hours?”

He shrugged. “You were supposed to review it with me yesterday.”

I looked at him. He remembered. Five years ago, Vance had assigned Sam to mentor me when my grandfather placed me at Horizon.

At first, I had hated having someone constantly looking over my shoulder. Sam had never treated me like an inexperienced heiress. He taught me. Argued with me. Corrected me when I was wrong. And, eventually, became the person I trusted most in the building.

Now he was standing in front of me with the same patient expression he'd had on my first day.

“There's also a meeting with Vance at eleven,” he continued. “I'll sit in with you.”

“I can handle it.”

“I know.” He smiled. “I'm sitting in anyway.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Still trying to mentor me?”

“Five years and you still need supervision.”

I almost laughed. “There it is.”

“What?”

“That annoying confidence.”

“You're welcome.”

He started walking toward the office. I followed him. Halfway there, he glanced back.

“And eat something.”

“I will.”

“So I've been told.” He smiled and disappeared into the office.

I stood outside for a moment. That was Sam. He didn't know he was breaking my heart. He was simply being Sam. And somehow, that made it worse.

By ten, I had already lost my patience.

Nerissa's POVThe mansion felt livelier after William and Lily returned from their holiday. They had spent the morning telling us about the places they'd visited, while Lily moved from one room to another with the energy of someone making up for being away, checking on the flowers, asking the staff what she had missed, and complaining that William had packed far too much for a trip that had apparently been perfect anyway. The children were even happier to have them back. Maya had barely left Lily's side since breakfast, while Noah and Luna had already found several reasons to follow William around the house.By late morning, I found myself looking for Vance.I expected to find him in his office, but when I passed the study, I caught the sound of Ethan's laughter through the half-open door. I paused long enough to look inside and found Vance sitting at the long table with his laptop open, several documents spread beside it, while Ethan was on the rug surrounded by wooden blocks.Vance

I lowered my eyes to my cup. “You already heard most of it yesterday.”“I heard the facts.” His voice was quiet, but more deliberate than before. “I want to know the rest.”I turned the cup slowly between my hands, watching the ice shift inside. “My father died when I was young. There isn't much more to tell.”“What do you remember?”I thought about it for a moment, searching through memories that had grown thinner with time. “Not enough. I remember pieces of him. His hands. His voice sometimes, although I'm not sure if that's actually my memory anymore or something my grandfather told me often enough that I started imagining it.” A faint smile touched my lips. “I remember waiting for my grandfather to visit and listening to him talk about my father.”Sam didn't interrupt, so I continued.“When you're a child, you don't really understand what it means to grow up without someone. You just notice that other children have fathers and you don't. My grandfather was the closest thing I had t

The day after our conversation with Adrian felt nothing like the evening before. There were no business advisers waiting for us, no messages from my mother, and no reason for either of us to discuss Ashworth or the marriage. Sam had decided that since we were technically on our honeymoon, we were going to spend the day doing absolutely nothing useful. I hadn't argued. We had walked along the waterfront for most of the morning, stopped at a small café for lunch, and wandered through the market afterward without buying much. Sam had somehow managed to turn even choosing where to eat into an argument, mostly because he insisted I took too long to decide and I insisted he changed his mind every five minutes.By the time we reached the open park near the water, the afternoon sun had softened, and I was beginning to think the day might actually remain peaceful. Then Sam stopped walking.I took another step before realizing he wasn't beside me anymore. When I turned, he was staring across the

Adrian shifted the conversation toward Ashworth, asking how I was handling everything since my grandfather's death. I told him it was busy but manageable and explained that I was still reviewing Philip's investments with the advisers who had worked with him.“Your grandfather spent decades building those holdings,” Adrian said. “He was never interested in collecting companies just for the sake of it. Horizon, the environmental projects, the healthcare investments—he put his money behind things he thought would matter years from now.”“That was my grandfather.”Adrian nodded. “And now you're carrying the position he spent decades building. You're the largest Ashworth shareholder, whether you're ready for it or not.”I lowered my eyes to the table. “That's the problem. Everyone seems to think I should already know exactly what I'm doing.”“You didn't exactly have time to learn slowly,” he said. “Your grandfather was gone, your mother expected you to step into the role, and suddenly every

“I don't think Sam has a problem with you being here.”The words came out before Sam could answer, and both men turned toward me. I set my glass down and tried to keep my expression casual. “Sam isn't the kind of person who holds grudges just because someone has made things complicated in the past. If you interrupted our dinner, he'd probably just see it as an interruption.”Sam's eyebrows lifted slightly, but he didn't contradict me. Adrian glanced at him. “Is that so?”Sam gave a small shrug. “She's probably right.”That seemed to satisfy Adrian. He leaned back in his chair, and for a moment, I thought the subject was settled. Instead, his attention returned to me.“When was the last time you spoke to your mother?”I hadn't expected the question. “Before the wedding.”“She hasn't called?”“She sent a few messages, and I replied.” I glanced down at my plate. “We haven't actually spoken.”Adrian nodded slowly. “She's still upset.”“She'll get over it.” I tried to sound more certain tha

“Maybe it was because it was you.”I didn't know how to respond to that.Sam rubbed his thumb over his knuckle and looked down before adding quietly, “You've been around me for five years, Caleste. I got used to having you there. You became familiar to me. Not just because you're my friend. I know you. Or at least…”He hesitated, then gave a small shrug. “I know you better than I know most people.”My fingers tightened slightly around the glass. I lowered my eyes, letting his words settle somewhere I didn't want to examine too closely.“Yeah,” I said after a moment, keeping my gaze on the glass. “Because I'm your friend. Naturally.”“Maybe.”Neither of us said anything after that. Sam leaned back in his chair while I took another sip of water, and after a moment, he glanced toward the clock before looking back at me.“Are you hungry?”“A little.”“Then let's have dinner together.” He pushed himself to his feet and reached for his jacket. “There's a restaurant downstairs.
