I clutched our marriage certificate in my hand as the clerk tapped a few keys on the computer. She looked up at me, sympathy in her eyes.

"Ms. Mancini, our records show that you're unmarried. But Mr. Dante Vitale is married, and Isabella Medici is listed as his spouse. Do you know her?"

I froze.

Three years ago, Dante Vitale, the Don of the Sicilian Mafia, had slipped the ring symbolizing a Donna onto my finger in front of the entire Mafia.

He'd taken my hand and stood before my late father's portrait, swearing, "Marie, your father gave his life to save mine. From this day forward, the Vitale family is yours, and so am I."

But it turned out that, legally, I was unmarried. Isabella was the real Mrs. Vitale.

Isabella had joined the family five years ago as one of Dante's newly recruited subordinates. She was strikingly beautiful and quickly caught the family's attention.

Dante noticed her, too. He promoted her to his side, making her the person he trusted most.

"She's just my assistant," he explained to me. "She's good at her job, and she made it through a rigorous selection process. I can't just transfer her somewhere else."

So I'd tolerated it, again and again.

I'd never imagined that by continuing to put up with everything, I'd eventually turn myself into the biggest joke of all.

My phone vibrated, and a message from Dante appeared.

"Baby, I canceled my work plans and bought your favorite cake. I've missed you so much. Have you missed me?"

I laughed bitterly, tears filling my eyes.

Dante Vitale. At fifteen, he'd broken the ribs of three thugs who'd harassed me. At eighteen, he'd knelt beneath the fireworks and proposed to me. At twenty-two, he'd pledged his loyalty to me at our wedding.

And yet, he was the same man who'd repeatedly been summoned away by Isabella over the past three years.

Just then, an email arrived. I opened it and found a message from an old friend.

"I'm in Paris right now, and I've opened my own studio. Would you like to come work with me?"

My friend had invited me countless times before. Every time, I'd turned her down because of Dante. He always told me he wanted to spoil me and that I didn't need to work so hard or do so much for myself.

I'd believed him.

But this time, I replied to my friend, "Yes. I'll be in Paris in a week. Make sure you're there to meet me."

When I returned to the villa, Dante was cooking in the kitchen. He hurried over and wrapped his arms around me. "Where have you been?"

There was a faint trace of perfume on him that certainly wasn't mine.

Before I could answer, his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen, then kissed my forehead. "Baby, something urgent came up at work. I have to step out for a while. Dinner's ready, so go ahead and eat."

I knew it was Isabella.

At that very moment, my own phone vibrated with a message from her.

"Marie, I'm not feeling well. I'm asking Dante to come keep me company. You don't mind, do you? Or you could come see for yourself how Dante takes care of me."

I stared at the messages, clenching my fists.

I saved the entire conversation, then got into my car and followed him without a second thought.

The hospital's VIP floor had been cleared out. The hospital director stood bent forward in an apologetic bow. "Mr. Vitale, Miss Medici only suffered a few scrapes. We failed to take proper care of her."

Dante's expression darkened. "If this happens again, you can shut this hospital down."

In the hospital room, Isabella sat pale against the headboard, holding his hand. "It's all my fault. I kept you from spending time with Marie. I hate myself for it."

"Don't say that. There's nothing about you to hate."

I stood outside the door, my entire body rigid.

After a while, footsteps sounded in the hallway, and Dante emerged from the room.

I instinctively slipped into a corner and heard Luca Moretti, the underboss, say, "Don, Isabella's fine. It's just a few scrapes. Why don't you go home and spend some time with Marie? I don't understand. You clearly love Marie so much. Why did you marry Isabella?"

I clenched my fists in the corner as Dante answered.

"Luca, I do love Marie. She gets to enjoy my affection openly, where everyone can see it. Isabella can only stay in the shadows. So what if I gave her the title of wife to make up for it?"

Luca sighed. "Aren't you afraid Marie will find out? Knowing her, if she ever learns the truth, she wouldn't come back to you even if you died right in front of her."

Dante fell silent for a moment. "I'll make sure she never finds out."

Standing outside the door, I felt as though every drop of blood in my body had frozen. I thought I would break down and sob, but I discovered I couldn't even cry.

All the way to the hospital, I'd been wondering whether Dante had some reason for what he had done.

Now I finally understood. He'd simply fallen in love with two women at once.

He'd never intended to choose between us. He wanted one woman to occupy the place of his wife and the other to be his mistress.

Fine.

Dante was so afraid I'd find out, was he? Then I'd show him what it really meant to never look back.

I said coldly, "I don't want to see any of you. Stop bothering me.""Marie!""Dante, listen carefully." I looked at him and spoke each word distinctly. "I said I don't love you anymore."He remained on his knees, looking completely dazed.Sophie came over and stepped in front of me. "Mr. Vitale, please leave. This is a private residence. If you don't go, I'll call the police."Dante didn't move. He just looked at me, his eyes filled with despair. "Marie, can we start over? I'll give you anything. I'll give you everything I have...""I don't want anything.""Then what do you want? Tell me! Whatever you want, I'll give it to you!"I looked at him and spoke softly. "I want you never to have appeared in my life in the first place. And now, I want you to leave for good and never show your face in front of me again."Dante's breath caught for a moment. Then he lowered his head, his shoulders trembling uncontrollably. He remained kneeling there for a long time without moving.Event

By then, I was in Paris, waking up in my friend's apartment. My friend was Sophie Laurent, my college roommate. When she saw I was awake, she came over and hugged me. Her voice was full of concern. "Finally, I get to see you again. How have you been all these years?"I smiled faintly. "Whether the past was good or bad doesn't matter anymore."Sophie looked at how exhausted I was. She opened her mouth, but in the end, she didn't ask anything.Instead, she patted my shoulder. "My studio is waiting for you. You don't need to think about anything else. Marie, you deserve so much better."I nodded in agreement.Sophie took me out for a meal, and we wandered through the streets of Paris. In the past, for Dante's sake, I'd been willing to let myself be trapped in that villa, giving up my work, my friends, and even myself.I'd thought that was love. I'd thought he was worth it.But I wasn't willing to do that anymore.I took out my phone. A string of missed calls and unread messages

Marie's clothes and personal belongings were all gone.Dante's breathing grew ragged. He rushed into the study, then the kitchen, calling her name over and over."Marie!"Marie, where are you?"Baby, don't scare me..."He searched every inch of the villa, but Marie was nowhere to be found. He stood in the living room, panic taking hold of him. Then he spotted the safe. Marie used it to store important things. He'd once asked her what she kept inside, and she'd smiled and said, "A woman's secrets."He hadn't thought much of it at the time. He believed everything about Marie belonged to him, including her secrets. But now, with the safe sitting right in front of him, Dante rushed toward it and turned the combination lock with trembling fingers. He tried Marie's birthday. Wrong. His own birthday. Wrong.Their wedding anniversary. Still wrong.Sweat poured down his face as panic consumed him. Finally, he closed his eyes, and a memory flashed through his mind.Years ago, when

Dante woke to the sound of someone crying. He abruptly opened his eyes and realized he had fallen asleep in Isabella's bed.Isabella was curled up beneath the covers, her shoulders trembling slightly as she cried. The sight made his heart ache."What's wrong?"Isabella looked up at him. "I dreamed you left... that you'd gone back to Marie and would never care about me again."At the mention of Marie's name, Dante's heart sank.He hadn't gone home last night. What was Marie doing? Had she been looking for him all this time?He immediately grabbed his phone. It was already two in the morning, but the screen was completely clear. No missed calls. No unread messages.Marie hadn't replied to him.He scrolled up through their conversation and realized that over the past few days, almost all the messages had come from him. Marie had barely responded.Dante tightened his grip on the phone, sensing that something was wrong."Dante?" Isabella sat up and reached for him. "What are you

Isabella followed Dante, glancing back at me with the faintest curve of her lips.I stood where I was, watching them walk away. The people around me were still laughing and talking about how much Mr. Vitale spoiled me.But they hadn't seen him accompanying another woman to put on the gown that was supposed to be mine.A few minutes later, Isabella emerged. She was wearing the gown, its waist fitting her perfectly. It had originally been tailored to my measurements, yet it fit her just as well.Dante stood beside her, adjusting the shoulder straps with an intimacy that made my stomach turn.Isabella approached me, lifting the hem of her skirt with an innocent smile. "Marie, does it look good? Dante says it suits me."I looked at Dante.A flicker of discomfort crossed his face, but he still spoke up, "Baby, Isabella is only wearing it temporarily. I've already contacted the designer to have an even better one made for you. Okay?"I smiled faintly. "There's no need."Dante froze

He fed me himself and applied medication to my wounds. When I was finally discharged, Dante went out of his way to throw a party to celebrate my recovery.Everyone in the hall looked at me with envy."Mr. Vitale really spoils Marie...""I heard all those gifts are limited editions. Some of them were even bought at auction for exorbitant prices...""Marie is so lucky..."I stood in the middle of the crowd without the slightest smile on my face.Seeing that I was unhappy, Dante slipped an arm around my waist. "Baby, I just had a custom gown made for you. It's upstairs. Don't be mad, okay?"I knew which couture gown he meant. Dante had genuinely put thought into it. The designer was known for having a strong personality and would never sell one of his creations to someone he didn't believe was sincere.I looked at Dante, but all I felt was bitter irony."Baby, why don't you go upstairs and change into it in a little while? Let everyone see how beautiful you are."I tugged at th
