ALTHEA

I smooth down the front of my dress with shaky hands. My fingers are cold, and I try not to show how nervous I am. The room is quiet, too quiet, and I can feel the weight of everyone’s eyes on me. The lights are bright. I blink a few times, willing myself to be brave. Just like Mum would’ve wanted. Just like I practiced.

I take a small breath and step up to the podium. My cards tremble in my hand, but I grip them tighter.

“Good evening, everyone,” I begin, trying to keep my voice steady. “Tonight I come to you not as one of the selected, not as an omega, but as a citizen. An equal.”

I glance around the room. People are watching, some with blank faces, some curious, a few already frowning. I press on.

“Based on your ranking, your experience of our kingdom is shaded a very specific way. I can say that for certain myself. But it wasn’t until recently that I understood how deep my love for this kingdom went.”

My throat feels tight. I swallow it down.

ALTHEAI turn away, hunting through the shelves until I spot a small washcloth tucked behind a tin box. My fingers close around it, and I carry it over to the sink. When I turn the handle, I’m honestly surprised when water comes out—ice-cold, but clean.I take a deep breath and steady myself. The cold burns my fingers as I wet the cloth, but I don’t flinch. I just wring it out and turn back around, trying to keep my face calm, for his sake.“This might sting a little,” I warn.“It’s okay,” he whispers, voice quiet. “I’m used to it.”I move closer and gently dab the cloth against the long gouge in his shoulder. Blood smears into the fabric, and I notice how the wound stays open—red and raw and angry. It should be healing faster. He’s not just a royal werewolf; he’s the son of the strongest Alpha alive. He carries the white wolf inside him. So why is he still bleeding like this?As if he hears my thoughts, Asher speaks. “The cane my father uses… it has silver in it,” he mutters, eyes fi

ALTHEAI look over at Asher. He has no idea what he’s just done. He’s given me everything, he’s given me the very thing Aaron and the others have been searching for. The truth. The proof. And he doesn’t even realize it.But something’s still wrong.I tilt my head, watching him as he hobbles to the bench and slowly lowers himself onto it with a grunt. His breath catches, just for a second. He tries to hide it, but I see it.“What’s wrong?” I ask quietly.“Nothing,” he says, his voice low as he props his elbows on his knees and buries his head in his arms.I sit beside him, careful not to get too close. I place the metal box gently on the bench between us. Its handle is cold against my palm, and I don’t let go right away.My eyes wander again to the books in the corner. The truth, tucked away in shadows. I shouldn’t be staring. I shouldn’t even know they’re there. I try to steady my breathing, to erase the image from my mind, but it’s already burned into me.“I’m guessing those are the

  • The Mate Games   Stumbling upon the truth

ALTHEAIt’s been days since the king’s outburst, and I’m still here. Still breathing. Still in my room. No one’s stormed in to drag me away. No execution. No exile. Just silence.I wish that made me feel better. But it doesn’t.If anything, the waiting is worse. Like I’m walking on glass, waiting for it to crack. My maids check in constantly, but I haven’t left my room since the night of the meeting. I keep telling them I’m tired, or sick, or just need time alone. And maybe that’s true. I do need time to think. But not inside this room. The walls are closing in. My thoughts won’t stop spinning. So, today, I slip out. I wait until the halls are quiet and the sun is just starting to dip behind the west tower. I take the long way, using a narrow stairwell at the far end of the hall. One of the old ones, steep and uneven, hardly used.My maids would protest, but I don’t tell them. I don’t want company.Besides the occasional guard, the first floor is mostly empty. Quiet.I’m almost to the

ALTHEAI haven’t been able to stop thinking about what King Valebrook said.“There’s a traitor amongst us.”His words keep ringing in my ears like a warning bell that won’t stop. I know he hates me, he has made that abundantly clear, but the way he looked at me yesterday, like he knew something… it’s eating me up inside. What does he know? Could he have known all this time? It doesn’t seem possible, but something about the way he said it… calm, cold, sharp, it felt like more than just anger. In his own twisted way, maybe this is all a game to him. A slow, painful one. Maybe he’s just trying to scare me until he finally drops the truth like a hammer. Or maybe… maybe he’s not bluffing at all.Either way, I can’t risk it. I have to act now. I need to see Aaron. But after the last attack by the revolutionaries, they rotated the guards again. He’s not in charge of watching over the prisoners anymore. I don’t even know where he’s stationed. I feel like I’m walking blind in the dark.I pace

ALTHEAI’m standing still, unable to move. My heart is beating too fast, too loud. I can hear it in my ears like thunder. The diary feels heavy in my hands, even though it’s just a book. I don’t even try to run when the king storms toward me.His hand snatches the diary from my grasp so fast I flinch.“You idiot,” the king spits, his voice sharp and full of anger. He doesn’t even look at me anymore. His eyes are locked on Asher. “You have no clue about the responsibilities you have.”No. No, no, no. This can’t be happening.“She leaves tonight,” the king says coldly, like he’s just tossing me away. “I’ve had enough of her.”I try to shrink back, to disappear without making it obvious. My legs want to run, but I can’t move. I don’t even want to breathe. I glance toward the other girls. My eyes stop on Caroline. I expect her to look smug or proud, but she’s not. She looks… worried. That’s when I know this is serious. This is worse than I thought. The king has never acted like this.“You
