Maeve

“What did you do to me?” I asked.

Ronan stopped walking.

I made it three more steps before turning back. He stood beneath the branches, moonlight cutting across one side of his face while the other remained hidden in shadow.

“I didn’t do this to you,” he said.

A humorless laugh escaped me. “You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to listen.”

“I’ve spent three years listening to stories about you.”

“Stories written by your sister.” His voice hardened around the final word.

MaeveDarius’s voice was gentle but firm. “Once you reach Caine territory, his warriors can protect you.”I bristled, my hand settling unconsciously on the knife at my hip, a knife that wasn’t Mara’s. Ronan had given me one of his at dawn, after taking hers for “safekeeping.” Taking, he’d called it. Stealing was closer to the truth, and I’d argued until Elowen threatened to drug us both for peace.“I can protect myself,” I said.Darius’s gaze flicked downward, noting the blade. “I know.” There was no challenge in his tone, only quiet understanding. “That doesn’t mean you should always have to do it alone.”His words caught me off guard, and a flicker of gratitude stirred in my chest. Ronan felt it through our bond, his wolf’s instant dislike of the feeling almost made me laugh.I glanced at him. “Don’t start.”“I’m standing perfectly still,” he replied, but his eyes were sharp and dangerous.“You’re imagining Darius’s death.”“He remains alive.”Darius laughed despite the pain, pressi

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 53: We're leaving

MaeveBy midmorning, every wolf inside Blackthorne Mansion knew we were leaving. Most of them had gathered to watch. They lined the upper balconies, crowded the entrance hall, and lingered beneath the covered walkway leading toward the stables. Some pretended to speak with servants or inspect the carriages waiting in the courtyard.None of them fooled me.They were staring at me.I kept my head raised as I descended the mansion steps.Let them stare.I would not bow my head simply because they were afraid of me now.I had spent the morning dressed in clothing Elowen found among Blackthorne’s supplies: dark riding trousers, tall boots, and a thick charcoal cloak fastened beneath my throat.Ronan’s shirt remained hidden beneath it.I told myself I had worn it because I had nothing else comfortable enough after the Hunt.My wolf knew better. His scent surrounded me. Smoke. Cold stone. Rain-soaked pine.It calmed something inside me that I did not want soothed.Ronan stood close enough fo

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 52: Denial

RonanI opened my eyes just as Maeve tore her hand away. The loss of contact sent a sharp ache through my palm. She was breathing hard, staring at me. “You saw it.”“Yes.”Her face shifted, immediately wary. “What?”“The blood on her sleeve.”Maeve glanced away. “It could have been hers.”“The cut was old.”“You don’t know that.”“I saw the symbol carved into her wrist.”“There was no symbol.”“You didn’t notice it.”“Because it wasn’t there.”“You were watching the knife.”Her silver eyes brightened, defensive. “You’re changing my memory.”“No.”“You wanted evidence, so you found evidence.”“I didn’t search for it.”“You saw what you expected to see.”Her denial was softer now, less certain. Underneath, I could feel it, the memory she’d tried to ignore: the lowered sleeve, the dried blood, the detail she’d dismissed because Mara had once taught her not to question safety when it was offered.Elowen knelt beside her. “Did you see what Ronan saw?”“No.” The answer came too quickly.Elo

RonanMaeve’s words weren’t an argument anymore. They were a plea.Elowen didn’t brush them aside. Instead, her voice softened. “I believe she may have loved you.”Maeve’s gaze snapped up, hope and pain tangled together. “You do?”“People can be capable of both love and cruelty at the same time,” Elowen said gently. She reached for Maeve’s hand again, and this time Maeve let her take it.“My sister might have loved me deeply. That doesn’t mean she didn’t use me.”Maeve’s voice wavered. “She protected me.”Elowen nodded. “Perhaps. She raised you when no one else would.”“Then the betrayal hurts more,” Maeve whispered. Her grief pulsed through the bond. My hand tightened on the arm of my chair. I wanted to pull her close, to tear Mara apart for making Maeve question every kind thing she’d ever received from the person she trusted most.Elowen glanced at me... a warning. Not yet. I stayed where I was.Maeve stared down at their joined hands. “Why my blood?”Elowen sighed. “We don’t know e

RonanMaeve followed Elowen’s gesture, her gaze sharpening with curiosity. “What is?”Elowen’s tone was careful, almost clinical. “The Sovereign Hunger no longer exists as it did before your bond was completed.”Maeve tensed. “Ronan said it wasn’t gone.”“It isn’t.” Elowen stepped closer, placing two fingers at the center of my chest. The contact made me uneasy; the Hunger in me recoiled even more.Maeve must have felt the flare of irritation, because she leaned forward, protective. Elowen arched a brow, intrigued. “Interesting.”Maeve’s eyes narrowed. “What?”“It reacts when someone touches him too.”Maeve folded her arms, trying for indifference. “I don’t care who touches him.”The bond pulsed with instant protest. Even Elowen noticed it.Maeve doubled down. “I don’t.”From the corner, Cassian coughed, half-amused. I nearly smiled.Elowen withdrew her hand. “Before the bond, the Hunger was a void. It demanded a finished bond but didn’t understand what would satisfy it. Now it’s attac

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 49: Elowen

RonanMaeve opened the door, but her eyes slid right past me. She fixed her gaze on Elowen instead, steeling herself.“Tell me everything.” The words were calm, but the bond between us told a different story, fear shivering through it, tangled with exhaustion, grief, and the desperate need for something solid amid the chaos.I fought the urge to close the distance between us. She’d locked herself in my room for hours because she needed that space. The fact that she’d opened the door at all felt like more than I deserved.Elowen studied Maeve for a long, quiet moment. The silver in Maeve’s eyes had faded with the sunrise, but it was still there, an unmistakable glimmer that set her apart from any ordinary wolf.“Inside,” Elowen said, and swept past Maeve without waiting for an invitation. That was always her way, she’d walked into my council chambers, my territory, even my private bath as if locks and boundaries were nothing more than polite suggestions.Cassian followed her in. I took
