Ronan

I made it halfway down the western corridor before my claws broke through my fingertips.

Pain split through my hands.

I curled them into fists and kept walking.

No one tried to stop me.

Servants flattened themselves against the walls as I passed. Warriors bowed their heads without meeting my eyes. Even the visiting Alphas lingering near the ballroom doors moved aside when they saw me coming.

They could smell it.

The loss of control.

It poured from me with every breath, thickening the air until the weaker wolves struggled to remain standing beneath the pressure of my power.

I should have stayed away from her.

I had known that before entering the entrance hall.

For three years, Elowen had warned me that Maeve’s blood had become tangled in the broken binding. Her scent might calm the Sovereign Hunger. Her presence might strengthen it. Touching her before we understood the connection could trigger anything from temporary relief to a complete loss of control.

I had listened.

For three fucking years, I had watched Maeve Cross from a distance.

Reports arrived every week.

Maeve questioning travelers near the northern borders. Maeve bribing messengers. Maeve following one of my men for two days before he crossed into protected territory. Maeve refusing to stop searching for the sister who had never deserved her loyalty.

I knew the village where she lived. The paths she used when she needed to think. The weapons she carried. The way she tied her dark hair away from her face before training.

I knew she preferred knives over swords because she believed speed mattered more than size. I knew she checked every lock twice before sleeping. I knew she kept Mara’s letters beneath the loose floorboard beside her bed.

But reports had never carried her scent. They had never prepared me for the sound of her voice or the fury in her eyes when she looked at me. They had never prepared me for her skin beneath my hand.

The moment I reached my chambers, I slammed the door hard enough to crack the frame.

The room smelled wrong. Clean linen. Burning cedar. Cold stone.

None of it was her.

My wolf threw himself against the inside of my body.

Go back.

The command tore through my skull.

I gripped the edge of the long table near the door.

“No.” The word emerged as a growl.

My wolf struck again.

The wooden table splintered beneath my hands.

I released it before I tore it apart and staggered farther into the room.

Every inch of my skin burned.

The place where I had held Maeve’s wrist burned hottest.

I could still feel her pulse beating beneath my fingers. Fast. Angry. Alive. Her scent clung faintly to my palm.

Rain against warm soil.Crushed berries. A trace of steel from the blade hidden beneath her dress.

I lifted my hand before I realized what I was doing.

The instant her scent reached me, the hunger surged.

My claws lengthened.

Bones cracked through my shoulders. My teeth sharpened until they cut the inside of my mouth, filling it with blood.

I drove my fist into the stone wall. The impact split my knuckles. It did nothing to stop the need crawling through me.

For years, the Sovereign Hunger had felt like emptiness.

A bottomless wound left behind by the unfinished binding. My wolf paced through that hollow space, searching for something that no longer existed.

Maeve’s blood had quieted him when it remained inside the ceremonial bowl.

Her physical presence had done something far worse.

It had given the hunger a shape. A face. A name.

Maeve.

I struck the wall again. Stone fractured around my hand. Dust fell across the floor. The scent on my palm faded beneath my own blood, and my wolf erupted.

A roar tore from my chest.

I grabbed the nearest chair and hurled it across the room. It shattered against the fireplace. One broken leg spun across the floor and disappeared beneath the bed.

Still not enough.

I seized the wardrobe doors and ripped them from their hinges. Wood cracked. Metal screamed. Clothes spilled across the floor as I threw one door aside and drove my fist through the other.

My body was too tight. Too hot.

Every instinct screamed that I had left something behind in the entrance hall. Something that belonged with me.

She had stood beneath my power when others fell. Her knees had trembled, but she had refused to bow.

Then she had threatened to cut out my tongue.

A broken laugh left me.

RonanNobody moved. Mara sat inside the truth circle looking far too calm for a woman who had just announced she might possess evidence connecting Gideon Cross to a Council intermediary.Maeve leaned both hands against the table. "Where?"Mara looked at her. "Cross territory."Of course.Cassian sighed. "I was hoping for something convenient. Like beneath your mattress.""I wasn't foolish enough to hide stolen Council records beneath my mattress.""You did infiltrate an Alpha's home after murdering his family."Mara's mouth tightened. Maeve ignored both of them. "Where in Cross?""An old hunting lodge near the eastern ridgeline."Ruan would know the area. Probably better than I did."Occupied?" I asked."Not when I left.""When was that?""Three years ago."Maeve stared at her. "You hid this before coming here?""Yes.""Why?"Mara hesitated. The truth circle warmed beneath her chair. Her jaw clenched."Because I knew Gideon would kill me eventually."The heat faded. Maeve's expressio

MaeveI slept for three hours.Apparently becoming an accidental Queen, throwing fifteen wolves through the air, surviving a drive by family reunion, and attending a blood debt feast still wasn't enough to convince my body to sleep longer. Rude.By the time Ronan and I reached the lower cells, Cassian was already waiting outside Mara's interrogation room with coffee. The stone corridor smelled faintly of damp and old iron, the kind of smell that clung to the walls no matter how many torches burned. He held one cup out to me. I stared at it."For me?""You look terrible.""That's incredibly sweet.""You're welcome."Ronan took the cup from my hand, smelled it, then handed it back. I looked at him."Did you just check my coffee for poison?""Yes."Cassian tipped his head back toward the ceiling. "We're doing this now?"Ronan opened the door. "We're doing this forever."Unfortunately, I believed him.Mara was already seated inside a new truth circle that Elowen had put in last night. No

RonanIt took Caine approximately twelve minutes to pretend an invading royal army had not interrupted dinner. I loved my pack. I also suspected every one of them was insane.Tables had been righted. Food reheated. Children reclaimed whatever seats they had abandoned when the horns sounded. Someone had restarted the music. The night air still smelled faintly of smoke and crushed grass where the fighting had been, but the fire pit blazed on as though nothing had ever tried to put it out.Gemma stood behind one of the serving tables threatening bodily harm against a warrior who had apparently taken three servings before everyone else had eaten. Normal. Almost.Maeve sat beside me with a plate she had barely touched. I looked at it. Then at her."Eat."Her eyes narrowed. "Don't start.""You haven't eaten.""I've had a busy evening."I pushed the plate closer. She stabbed a potato with unnecessary aggression. Satisfied, I looked away. The empty chair remained at the end of the central tab

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 156: Get Off Your Knees

MaeveFor several seconds after the last Silver Crown wolf disappeared beyond the western markers, nobody moved. Not them. Not us. Not me. The clearing had gone so quiet that I could hear my own breathing. Then I turned around. And realized every person behind me was still on their knees.Cassian. Torin. Theron. Tyson. Corina. Lyra. Caine warriors. Trackers. Even Soren had one hand braced against the ground as if she had tried to fight whatever I had done and lost.Only Ronan remained standing. My stomach dropped."Oh."Cassian slowly lifted his head. His expression was flat. "Excellent observation, Luna.""Shut up.""I would love to." He glanced pointedly at his knees. "Unfortunately, I'm apparently awaiting royal permission."Fuck. I immediately reached for whatever part of me had pressed them down. The power was still there. Huge. Cold. Waiting. I pulled it back."Get up."The pressure vanished. Everyone moved at once. Some stood quickly. Others staggered. Theron rolled one shoulde

MaeveI stared at my mother, words gathering inside me that I knew better than to voice. None of them would have been polite. Behind me, Ronan’s anger pressed against our bond, hot and immediate, but I hardly noticed it anymore. Exhaustion had settled into my bones, a deep and bitter fatigue from years of others telling me what I thought, what I felt, and why I made the choices I did.My mother shifted her attention to Ronan, perhaps realizing she would get nowhere with me and hoping for a different outcome with him instead.“Alpha Caine,” she addressed him.Ronan’s expression became unreadable. “I would not,” he replied.“This does not have to end in blood,” she tried.“You crossed my border with an armed force,” he reminded her.“We came for our Queen.”“You found her,” he said, his voice growing cold. “She said no.”I felt something warm flicker inside me at that. He never claimed me. He never said I belonged to him. Just that I had said no.Isolde studied him carefully. “If you tr

MaeveThe words hung between us, heavy and foul, as if something rotten had been placed in the space that separated me from my mother.Ronan remained motionless, and so did I, but the tension behind me was palpable. Every Caine wolf could feel his anger, and so could the Silver Crown. My mother looked at Ronan with a wary, simmering hatred, as if he were some threat she had spent years preparing herself to despise.I shifted, stepping into her direct line of sight. “Stop looking at him,” I told her.
