CHAPTER TWO
ZOEY
I ran.
I pushed through the pack house doors, and it was as though luck was on my side as the pack’s gate was left open and without thinking, I ran out, ignoring the shouts from the guards trying to stop me. The wind was cold and it slapped against my face, but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t afford to stop.
The shouts behind me became faint but I knew that they’d soon come after me, so I continued running into the woods, ignoring the tree branches that whipped my skin. My whole body ached and every breathe I took burned by chest, but I didn’t slow down because I couldn’t let them catch me.
I had nothing, no wolf, no strength, and nowhere to go but I knew that I wanted to survive. I had to!
By the time I reached the pack’s border, my legs gave out on me. I fell to my knees and my entire body trembled. My skin was covered in bruises, and my dress was torn, but none of it could compare to the pain in my chest.
I didn’t want to cry but I couldn’t control it as a sob burst out from my mouth and I had to press my hand against my mouth to hold myself. What was I supposed to do now?
Suddenly, a rustling sound behind me broke me out of my thoughts and I turned but before I could react, a hand came out, and grabbed me back, making me crashed onto the ground and gasped loudly.
A man stood over me, and he had a wicked grin on his face, showing his sharp fangs and I instantly realized that he’s a vampire. “Oh, hello there,” He said and his voice sent chills down my spine.
In that moment, panic rushed through me and I scrambled back to get away from him but he grabbed my wrist and dragged me under him. He pinned me down with his weight, making it impossible for me to move.
“You look so fragile and tantalizing. I wonder how it feels to have a taste of a werewolf,” he murmured, and he brushed his fingers against my cheek, making me unconsciously flinch.
Fear filled my body. I struggled under him, but he was too strong for me.
No. No. Please, no.
Tears fell from my eyes. “Please, don’t do this,” I desperately choked out. “Please, don’t kill me.”
”Oh, I’m not going to kill you first. I’ll have a taste before I do so,” He laughed, and the sound made me sick to my stomach. And in that moment, I realized that one was coming for me. I was utterly alone, helpless and weak.
I squeezed my eyes shut as I felt his fangs graze my skin, and my body shook. “Moon Goddess, please. I don’t care what it takes, just let me fight back for once.” I said to myself and then, something in the air changed.
The wind blew the trees and the ground shook. It felt good but then, a sharp pain hit me. I gasped, and my eyes blurred. It felt like my skin was on fire and my bones were breaking.
Then suddenly, a quiet voice sounded inside my head. “I am Frankie. Your wolf.”
My eyes opened up, and they glowed.
The vampire’s smile fell and he looked scared. “Y—you. You’re the special wolf!” He stuttered.
I was just as shocked as him, especially when I heard him call me the special wolf, and the weird part was that my wolf was red! In all my life, I had never seen nor heard about a red wolf, so why was my wolf red?!
I felt strength fill me and for the first time in my life, I wasn’t helpless, and before he could process what was going on, I lunged at him, catching him off guard and finished him off, leaving his lifeless body at my feet.
What have I done?
I stared down at the vampire and truly, he was indeed dead. I had killed a vampire on my own? I couldn’t believe my eyes and I immediately started panicking. What was going on?
My confusion came to a halt when I heard the sound of guards rushing towards me and I knew I had to run. “I have to leave.” I rushed towards the border and just as I was about to crossed, I hesitated.
The pack in front of me was the Silvercrest pack, and the Alpha was known for his brutality and cruelty. It was a bad idea crossing over but something about it seemed right. It was like something was drawing me to it and when I heard the sound of Kelvin’s guards coming closer, all the doubt and hesitation I felt, instantly vanished.
I ran forward, hoping to escape, but just as I was about to cross over to the other side, a group of vampires stepped in my way. Their eyes were glowing as they glared at me and then they bared their sharp fangs as if to scare me.
Fear gripped me and I froze. I had just gotten my wolf so I wasn’t sure I could fight one vampire, let alone a whole group.
I took a step back, but my paws got stuck on a root, making me stumble and I hit a tree. My heart pounded as the vampires moved closer to me and they watched me closely so I’d not escape. In that moment, I knew I was trapped. “You killed one of our own.” One of them said and he glared at me with a deadly glint.
“Please leave me alone,” I said in my head. “He attacked me first.”
“I’ll protect you, Zoey. I’ll fight for us,” My wolf, Frankie said in my head and I didn’t respond because I knew she was just trying to make me feel better. She couldn’t possibly take on a group of vampires.
Before I could process what was happening, the first vampire lunged at me and I quickly moved out of the way, making him crash into the three.
That made them angry as they all rushed towards me with their sharp fangs, ready to attack me. I tried to run but I was too weak, and the fear made my body give out.
One of the vampires grabbed me by my throat, and strangled me till the point where my vision blurred. The vampire leaned in and scratched my neck with his fangs. I bowled out in pain but he didn’t stop and just as I was about to pass out, I saw a huge white wolf rushing towards my direction. It looked so beautiful and I felt a magnetic pull to it. It felt like redemption. “Please save me,” I muttered with my last strength
The wolf rushed towards us and the vampire dropped me on the ground to fight back, and I ran away, just as far as my strength could carry me so I could die peacefully. I had accepted that this was my life and there was nothing I could do about it.
“Thank you, Frankie. I’m glad I could meet you before I die,” I fell to the ground and transformed back to my human form and whispered with the last strength I could muster, and after that, everything faded.
CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND SIXZOEYHannah was fussing over the herbs by the window, humming a low tune, while Ronald sat across the room sharpening a dagger. The contrast was hilarious. One of them was the picture of calm, and the other was a murder weapon with legs.I stood at the doorway, fingers twisting together nervously.“You okay?” Hannah asked without even turning around. She always knew.“Can I talk to you guys?” My voice came out weird—tight, wobbly. Ronald looked up immediately.Hannah turned, her expression softening the second she saw my face. “Of course. Come in.”I stepped inside and closed the door behind me, suddenly wondering if I should’ve waited or maybe told them one at a time. Or maybe just never said anything and quietly raised a child in secret in the forest like a fairy tale witch. But it was too late to back out now.Ronald tilted his head. “You look like someone who’s about to confess to a crime.”“Maybe I am,” I muttered.Hannah gestured toward the seat besid
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY EIGHTZOEY“Graham,” I said as I sat on the windowsill, arms folded across my belly, “what would you name the baby if it’s a girl?”He looked up from where he was buttoning his shirt, one brow lifting in mild surprise. “You’re already thinking of names?”I shrugged, smiling slightly. “It’s not a crime.”He chuckled and walked toward me, stopping right in front of me and resting his hands on my knees. “Okay, fine. A girl… hmm. What about something strong? Like Aria. Or Raven.”I wrinkled my nose. “Raven sounds like she’ll be a villain.”Graham grinned. “Villains are cool.”“Not when they’re my child.”“Alright then,” he said, thinking. “What about Maya?”“That’s cute,” I said. “What about if it’s a boy?”“Graham Jr.,” he said immediately, deadpan.I burst into laughter and shoved his shoulder playfully. “Be serious!”“I am!” He grinned. “Okay, okay… maybe something simple. Elias? Noah?”I tilted my head. “I like Elias.”A soft silence settled between us f
CHAPTER TWO HUNDREDZOEYThe ride back was quiet, not the uncomfortable kind, just the kind that came after a long, full day. Graham’s arms stayed firm around me as I leaned into him, the steady rhythm of the horse’s hooves matching the steady beat of his heart. It was funny how things had changed. Months ago, I would’ve flinched at his touch. Now, I needed it to breathe. When we got back to the pack house, the sky was already beginning to blush with sunset. The guards at the gate bowed slightly. Everything felt calmer, not just outside, but within. We didn’t talk much as we climbed the stairs and entered our room. Graham kicked off his boots, sat on the edge of the bed, and rubbed his face with both hands. He looked tired, deep-tired, but his eyes were still sharp when he glanced at me.“You should eat,” he said.I smiled faintly. “You sound like Hannah.”“I’m serious.”I nodded. “I’ll eat. Just… let me sit with you first.”He opened his arms, and I walked into them without hesitatio
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINEGRAHAMThe morning after Zoey told me, I barely slept. I spent most of the night staring at the ceiling, her soft breathing beside me grounding me and shaking me all at once. She was pregnant with my child. That truth echoed in my head over and over again.By the time the first hint of light filtered through the windows, I’d already planned six different strategies to strengthen security around the pack. Two patrol shifts. A backup unit stationed near the infirmary and no missions for Zoey. None, not anymore. She stirred beside me and turned to face me, her eyes still heavy with sleep. “You didn’t sleep at all,” she murmured, frowning.“I’m fine,” I said, brushing her hair back gently. “You, though. You need to rest more.”She yawned, stretching. “I’m pregnant, not dying.”“Still.”“Still nothing,” she countered, smiling as she pulled herself up to sit. “Please don’t start treating me like glass.”I looked at her, really looked, and I couldn’t help
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY EIGHTZOEYLily sat cross-legged on my bed, her head resting against the headboard, one arm tucked beneath a pillow as she looked at me with a calm, curious smile. I sat by the window, legs pulled to my chest, the early evening sun casting soft golden lines across the room.“You’re awfully quiet,” she said, breaking the silence.I looked at her. “So are you.”She chuckled. “Touché.”The silence returned, but this time, it wasn’t heavy. Just… there. Present and comforting in a way.Eventually, she tilted her head and asked, “How are you, Zoey? Really?”I blinked, caught off guard by the question. “I’m… okay.”She raised a brow. “Try again.”I sighed, resting my chin on my knees. “I don’t know. Everything’s moving so fast. One minute I’m trying to survive rogue attacks, the next I’m finding out I’m going to be a mom.” I gave a small, nervous laugh. “A mom, Lily. Me.”Her eyes softened, and she shifted closer on the bed. “That’s not a bad thing.”“I know,”
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY EIGHTGRAHAMThe fire crackled gently in the hearth, but I barely heard it. My eyes were on Zoey, curled beside me on the couch with her legs tucked under her and a blanket draped over her shoulders. She’d fallen asleep just a few minutes ago, her head resting against my arm like she’d finally exhaled after holding her breath for too long.Pregnant.The word still echoed through my skull like a bell struck too hard.Zoey was pregnant. My mate… was carrying my child.I’d kissed her, held her, told her I was grateful, happy but that was only half the truth. The rest of it was sitting in the pit of my stomach, heavy and cold like a stone. I was terrified and that fear was eating me alive.I sat there long after she drifted off, staring at the fire, listening to the steady rhythm of her breathing. I rested a hand on her stomach. It was still flat, still unchanged, but everything was different now.A child.A tiny life growing inside her, dependent on both of
