MARIE

"Breathe out slowly."

Doctor Aris pressed his cold fingers against my lower ribs. Sharp pain flared beneath his touch. I did not flinch. My gaze locked on the blank wall. I counted the faint cracks in the plaster. One, two, three.

"Exhale." Aris stepped back. He wiped his hands on a clean white towel. His jaw tightened in a hard line. "Three ribs healed wrong. Your collarbone has a hairline fracture. Malnutrition stripped away most of your muscle mass."

Silence filled the small infirmary.

MARIE"He is looking for a Queen."Rowan's voice boomed through the private dining room. He stood at the head of the long table, holding a thick parchment letter stamped with the royal wax seal. His chest puffed out with pride.Callum leaned forward in his chair. His eyes widened. "Are you certain, Father?""The Royal Steward confirmed it this morning," Rowan said. He turned his gaze toward Sera. "King Valerius is touring the northern packs. He needs a political alliance to secure the border against the rogue factions. He needs a bride. And our Sera is at the top of his list."Sera gasped loudly. She pressed both hands to her cheeks, blushing a deep shade of red. "A Queen? Me?""Of course you," Callum told her. He grinned, looking happier than I had seen him in years. "You have the pure bloodline. You have the grace. This marriage will elevate the Wilson pack above all others."Isolde smiled weakly from her seat near the fire, coughing into a white handkerchief. "It is a wonderful mat

  • The Mate They Tried To Bury   Chapter Ten

KIERAN'S POVThe dining hall smelled of roasted venison, expensive red wine, and desperate ambition.Valerius sat at the head of the long oak table. He did not touch his food. His golden eyes swept across the room, analyzing every face, every heartbeat, every lie. Being the Lycan King required more than brute strength. It required vision. Predators always revealed themselves in the quiet moments. To his right, Alpha Rowan Wilson talked endlessly about border trade and silver taxes. Rowan sweated through his silk collar. He wanted royal favor. To his left, Isolde Wilson picked at a piece of fish. She looked pale, her breathing shallow. Sickness clung to her skin like a second shadow.Next to Isolde sat Sera. The golden child. Sera laughed at all the right moments. She offered Valerius shy, admiring glances. She performed the role of the perfect, innocent daughter flawlessly. Her scent was sweet floral perfume layered over typical wolf musk.Next to Sera sat Callum. The protective broth

MARIE"Do you think this silent act fools anyone?"Callum slammed the heavy oak door shut. The loud crack echoed through the estate’s vast library, rattling the glass panes in the tall windows. He stood blocking the only exit. His broad shoulders tensed under his dark suit jacket.A few feet away, Marie paused. She held a stack of leather-bound ledger books against her chest. She did not jump when the door slammed. She did not even blink. Slowly, she turned her head to look at him. Her face remained a blank, unreadable mask. That mask infuriated Callum. Two years ago, he found Sera bleeding on the greenhouse floor. He remembered the metallic smell of blood mixed with crushed roses. He remembered Sera sobbing, clutching her torn arm, pointing a trembling finger at Marie. Marie had stood there holding a pair of pruning shears, looking shocked. To Callum, the truth was obvious. Jealousy drove Marie to attack their miracle child. Sera was the biological daughter, kidnapped as a baby and f

MARIE"Where is Sera?"Those were the first words out of her mouth. My fingers paused over the porcelain basin. Cool water dripped from the linen cloth back into the bowl. Isolde shifted on the mattress, her eyes still half-closed against the morning glare. Fever flushed her pale cheeks."She stepped out to speak with the seamstress," I answered softly.I sat beside the bed and wrung out the cloth. I pressed it gently against my adoptive mother’s forehead and watched a soft sigh escape her lips. For a fleeting second, she leaned into my touch. That familiar warmth bloomed in my chest. She still knew me. She still found comfort in my hands. Then, her eyes fluttered open. She blinked away the sleep and looked past me toward the empty doorway."Could you fetch her, Marie?" Isolde asked. Her voice cracked, dry and weak. "She promised to read the rest of that chapter to me."A lump formed in my throat, but I nodded. "Of course. I will find her."I pulled the cloth away and laid it on the b

MARIE"Leave the tray on the counter." The head cook did not bother looking up from her wooden chopping board. "Lady Sera already took the morning broth upstairs."Steam rose from the ceramic bowl in my hands. Mint and crushed ginger scented the warm kitchen air. Carefully, my fingers tightened around the edges of the tray. I had spent the last hour grinding those roots. This specific recipe was not written in any cookbook.Isolde taught it to me.Years ago, a terrible fever swept through the estate. Rowan wanted to lock me in the quarantine wing with the sick servants. He viewed me as a stray they took in out of charity. My adoptive mother refused his orders. Isolde barricaded the door to her own bedroom and kept me inside with her. For six days, she bathed my burning skin with cool water. She forced this exact ginger broth down my throat spoon by spoon."You are my daughter," she whispered to me during the worst night of that fever. Her cool hand stroked my sweaty hair. "Do not let

The doctor asked the question softly. He kept his eyes on his medical chart. "These are not standard prison injuries. Burn marks cover your shoulders. Lash lines trace across your back.""It does not matter." My voice sounded flat. Dry."It matters to your medical record.""Write down that I fell."Aris paused. He looked up from his clipboard. Pity swam in his eyes, and I hated it. Pity did nothing useful. Pity never opened a locked door o
