(Charlie)

The black ink on Elara’s skin seems to writhe under the harsh fluorescent lights of the medical wing.

A rose. A blade. Thorns.

I don't just see it. I feel it. I feel the scratch of charcoal on heavy paper. I smell the scent of lavender and old parchment that used to cling to my mother’s study like a second skin.

“What are you drawing, Mama?”

“Just a garden, little bird. A garden that grows in the dark.”

I stumble back, hitting the doorframe with a thud that rattles my teeth. Bile rises in my throat, hot and acidic.

"Charlie!"

Kaleb is there instantly. His hands are on my shoulders, his heat trying to penetrate the sudden, freezing cold that has seized my bones. He smells of soap and comfort, but right now, I can’t stand it.

"Don't," I gasp, wrapping my arms around my waist as I try to keep myself from falling apart. "Don't touch me right now."

"Charlie, talk to me," he pleads, stepping back but keeping his hands raised, hovering. "Ezra said it’s a Sleeper Mark. Do you recog

  • The Moon Chose Me Twice   Chapter 48 Counter-Ward

EzraThe syringe sits in a glass tray like a polite little lie.Clear barrel. Fine needle. If you looked at it with normal eyes, it was exactly what it pretended to be. Something medical. Something mundane. If you looked at it with mine, it was a weapon built by someone who understands rules.I work in the small sterile room Aris pretends is just for prep. It’s really for containment. There’s a thin silver line set into the tiles around the drain, a circle-within-a-circle that keeps anything clever from slipping into the plumbing and becoming a future problem.I put on gloves anyway. Ritual is ninety percent intention and ten percent hygiene, and I refuse to give the universe easy openings. The syringe is cold in the way certain wards feel, like they’re made of absence.I lift it, turn it slowly, and let my senses slide over it.Ostensibly it’s just a prop. A syringe without any fluid in it. An empty vessel. But when I open all my senses, I can feel it.A thin, stubborn void running a

CharlieThey keep the intruder alive, because I said so.Valerius has him bound in silver chain in the corridor outside the medical wing, a leather gag cutting off anything he might try to spit into the air.Orion sleeps against my collarbone, warm and heavy, like he belongs there and nowhere else. I don’t hand him over. Not now. Not after the way that man’s gaze snapped to my baby like a magnet finding iron.Kaleb walks with me into the old strategy room and shuts the door. Two warriors take position outside.Ezra and Valerius are already inside, and Aris follows a moment later, his medical bag thumping onto the table like a warning.Valerius doesn’t waste time. “He didn’t come through the front. No badge. No key. Someone opened a staff door for him.”The words settle into my bones. Someone from Bloodmoon let him in.Ezra’s eyes are sharp and focused. “The blankness around him is a veil. A suppression ward. Whoever sent him didn’t want us tracking his scent back to their lair.”Aris’

CharlieThe medical wing is quiet, but it’s not peaceful.Outside the door, boots shift now and then. The guard rotation I ordered is holding. Two hours, no gaps, a runner stationed close enough to sprint.A knock lands on the door. One knock. Polite and quiet.Ezra’s head snaps up. My body goes still around my son.Another knock follows, firmer this time.“Medical supply run,” a man calls through the door. “Aris urgently requested fresh blood packs and sterile tubing.”Bullshit. Aris would never send supplies to this door without telling me first. He knows this wing is sealed.I keep Orion tucked against my chest and move closer to the door, careful not to wake him.“What’s your name?”There’s a pause that lasts half a breath too long.“Tomas,” the voice replies. “Medical orderly.”There is a Tomas on staff. Quiet, thin, always seems a bit nervous. This voice does not match the memory in my head.Even worse, I can’t smell the person on the other side of the door. It feels like talkin

  • The Moon Chose Me Twice   Chapter 45 Madilyn Smiles

CharlieMadilyn has been given the kind of captivity Bloodmoon likes to pretend is mercy.A guest suite with soft lamps. Clean linen. A low fire. A tray of untouched food that smells expensive. Two warriors outside the door, polite as statues, deadly as a promise.I leave Orion in the medical wing with Kaleb and Ezra. The rule stands. Only Kaleb and I touch him. Only Kaleb and I hold him.Every instinct in me hates walking away, even for a minute, but this is part of it too. A siege does not end because you cling to the safest room and hope. The guards at Madilyn’s door straighten when they see us.Madilyn sits in a high-backed chair near the fire, one hand resting on the curve of her stomach like she’s posing for a painting.“Charlie,” she says warmly. “You look exhausted. Almost haggard.”I step inside and let the door close behind me, determined to give her nothing soft to pull apart.“Madilyn,” I say, calm and flat. Her smile widens. “Still so formal. Still trying to be in control

  • The Moon Chose Me Twice   Chapter 44 The Listening Toy

EzraThe carved wolf is crude, almost charming in a way that makes my skin crawl.Someone wanted it to look like a keepsake. A thing you would pick up without thinking, without gloves, without fear. The star metal wire around its neck catches the light every time Elara’s monitors blink.Star metal doesn’t behave like ordinary metal. It’s not merely conductive. It’s hungry. It drinks intention, then holds it.The wood is worse.Wood remembers shape. It remembers heat. It remembers the hands that carved it.I lean forward slowly, careful with my breath, careful not to send the air over it too hard, as if the thing might wake if I startle it.Which is ridiculous. It’s already awake.“What is it exactly?” Charlie asks, voice low and controlled, not granting me a second to hide behind mysticism. “Plainly.”The impulse to lie, to soften, to protect, rises in me like a reflex. I crush it.“It’s a relay,” I say. “A catalyst built into a toy. The carving is the vessel. The shape is the spell.”

  • The Moon Chose Me Twice   Chapter 43 Orion

CharlieThe medical wing smells like antiseptic and steel. Like the world has been scrubbed clean so violence can happen neatly.Elara’s monitors keep their steady rhythm. The ventilator hisses and releases. The lights overhead hum with that cold hospital patience that makes time feel different, stretched thin and sharp. My son stirs against my chest, warm and heavy in that newborn way that makes my arms ache and my heart tighten at the same time.Ezra sits beside Elara, too rigid to be comfortable. His eyes keep flicking to the toy, then to my baby, then away again like he can’t make himself stare at the whole picture for too long.Kaleb stands near the door, one hand braced on the wall, his gaze fixed down the corridor beyond the glass panel.“We should move,” he says quietly. No panic or doubt in his voice. Just pure strategy. “Valerius will want instructions. Aris needs to know what’s sealed. The pack needs to see me.”He looks at me then, and I see the strain under the control. H
