Chapter 2

Author: Snail
The heavy doors of the Moon Temple swung open again.

I stumbled toward them, then stopped two steps short, staring hard into Ash's eyes.

That same, familiar hatred stared back at me, and my heart sank straight to the bottom.

"How did I ever fall for a filthy she-wolf like you? You don't deserve to live!"

Ash snarled and came at me, his hands already shifting into claws, raking bloody lines across my body.

I dropped to the ground in agony. He stomped down on me with brutal force, the earth beneath us cracking apart.

Blood shot from my mouth. I tried weakly to fight back, but the next second his hand had already closed around my throat.

"The Obsidian Pack shouldn't have to put up with a beast like you. I'll kill you myself!"

I clawed helplessly at his hand, but it might as well have been a steel trap. It didn't budge.

The air thinned. I could actually smell death closing in.

Ash finally let go. The second he did, he kicked me with everything he had.

I flew through the air before slamming into a tree.

"Trash. If we weren't inside pack territory, I'd have already snapped your neck."

The pack's law against killing their own was the only reason I was still breathing.

Just like the nine men before him, every trace of love in Ash's eyes was gone, replaced with pure hatred and the urge to kill.

After Ash left, it took me a long time to even sit up. The moment I did, something kicked me again, and I went flying into a tree trunk too thick for a grown wolf to wrap his arms around. It snapped clean in half and came down with me.

Blood spilled from my mouth again.

Just like the nine times before, my father unleashed a wave of pressure I had no way to withstand once Ash was gone.

Pinned under an Alpha's dominance, I couldn't move so much as a finger.

He pulled out a dagger coated in silver nitrate and drove it into my body, again and again.

The silver burned through my flesh like fire. I screamed in agony, and it didn't matter one bit.

He stabbed me eighty-one times across my hands, my shoulders, my thighs, before he finally pulled back his aura and walked away.

I lay on the ground for half the day before I could even move enough to crawl to the healing hall.

The healer took one look at my wounds and screamed, pinning me down on the table.

"What did this to you? I have to report this to the Alpha right now!"

I stopped her and hid the truth, like always.

Everyone in the pack knew how devoted the Alpha was to his mate, how even years after her death he still couldn't let her go, and how he'd poured every bit of that love into me instead.

So no one would have believed it. No one would have believed my own father did this to me with his own hands.

With no other options, I called my grandfather, Aaron Mercer.

Grandfather and I had never been close. He'd never liked my mother, not since the day my father nearly gave up his claim to the Alpha title just to be with her.

But when he saw my injuries over video, even he was furious, and it wasn't hard to see he actually cared.

He brought my two cousins and stormed over to confront my father.

"Alpha, how could you do this? Willow is your own daughter! This is monstrous!"

He kept cursing at my father while beating him with his cane.

My father didn't say a word. He just took Grandfather by the arm and led him toward the Moon Temple.

My cousins checked over my wounds, already talking about how they'd make my father pay for this.

But the next moment, Grandfather walked out of the temple with his expression like thunder, radiating a pressure even stronger than my father's. It crashed down on me without mercy.

My cousins froze, then threw themselves in front of me, taking the hit.

"Grandfather, have you lost your mind?"

Grandfather kept coming silently, his eyes burning with that same, sickeningly familiar hatred.

Before my cousins could say another word, my father pulled them away. Without them shielding me, I went flying again, and every wound on my body split open and started bleeding all over.

Fear and despair flooded through me.

"Grandfather, I'm your granddaughter. Please, stop..."

"You don't deserve to call yourself my granddaughter. Today, I don't care if it breaks pack law. I'm going to kill you!"

I curled up, shaking on the ground. My cousins slowly walked up behind Grandfather, their eyes now just as cold as his.

It looked like they'd gone into the temple too.

"Grandfather, don't hold back. Kill her today."

"A monster like her is a disgrace to this pack. I can't stand the thought of her still breathing."

I had lost count of how many times that cane and those claws tore into me. All I knew was that even a werewolf's body had its limits, and mine finally gave out.

I passed out from the pain.

I stayed unconscious for two full days before I finally woke up.The moment I opened my eyes, I saw my grandpa standing by my bed. When he noticed I was awake, he rushed over and reached for my hand. The memory of him beating me flashed through my mind instantly, and I flinched back on instinct, pulling away from him.My voice came out hoarse and panicked."Where's Captain Hale? I need to see him."My grandpa's hand froze in midair, a flash of unspeakable pain crossing his eyes. After a moment, his voice came out thick with guilt."You're finally awake, Willow. Captain Hale's handling something right now. I'm so sorry. I should have seen through your father's plan. I misjudged him completely. I never imagined he'd be cruel enough to hurt his own daughter like this."All the tears I'd been holding back finally broke loose and slid silently down my face.My grandpa wrapped his arms around me and held me tight.I'd gotten my freedom back, but my heart didn't feel nearly as ligh

Day after day passed, but strangely, no one ever came to put me on trial. The waiting slowly wore down what little patience I had left.I was just about to demand to see Damian when the door swung open from the outside.Damian walked in, his eyes settling quietly on me. His expression was complicated, thick with something like pity.He shook his head and let out a heavy sigh.I spoke first, my voice flat and without a trace of emotion."Captain Hale, you don't need to feel sorry for me. I deserve whatever's coming. I can take any punishment you decide."He reached out slowly and brushed a few loose strands of hair from my face, his voice gentle."You poor thing. I can't even imagine what you've been through all these years. We've found out the whole truth. You're free to go."I stared at him blankly, my mind a complete mess."Free? What truth? The record inside the Moon Temple was crystal clear. Wasn't everything already out in the open?"He looked at me, his eyes full of pa

The two men who pushed through the tent flap were my father and grandfather. My father's face was frantic. He rushed straight to me and grabbed my arm, his voice sharp with panic."Willow, what are you planning to do?"The second I saw him, everything I'd been holding in broke loose. I collapsed against his chest, my voice cracking."Dad, you should never have kept me. It's because you protected me all these years that I got the chance to do all these horrible things. I'm turning myself in and ending this."The word confess made my father's grip tighten, his voice edging toward something obsessive."What? Confess? You're my daughter. If anyone punishes you, it'll be me and no one else. I won't let the Royal Guard take you."I shoved him off with everything I had, my eyes gone flat and dead."I deserve this. Whatever they do to me is exactly what I've earned."My grandfather was standing off to the side. He stepped forward with a cold expression and confronted my father."You'

The man stepped closer and leaned in to report quietly to Damian."Captain Hale, the two of them claim they're her father and grandfather. Their stories match up perfectly. Both of them say no one's touched her, that every wound on her body is self-inflicted."He paused, dropping his voice even lower."There's more. Her father specifically told us she's mentally unstable, that she hurts herself regularly."Damian's frown deepened at that.He let the questioning drop for now, picked up a cup of tea from the table, and walked over to press it gently into my hands. The cup held a faint warmth, but my hands stayed ice cold.He looked me straight in the eye, his voice softening as he asked again."Tell me honestly. Is someone threatening you, forcing you to hide the truth?"I gripped the cup tighter, my fingers trembling.I shook my head again."No. No one's threatening me. This is all on me."Seeing how firm I was, Damian realized he wasn't going to get the truth out of me anyt

As I stood inside the Moon Temple, a cold, hollow feeling swept through me.My knees gave out, and I dropped to the floor. I stared blankly ahead and repeated the same words."How could this be... how could this be..."Behind me, my grandpa glared at me. His eyes were cold and burning with a hatred that cut to the bone."Now you know exactly how disgusting you are."Whatever tenderness he'd shown me before had flipped into pure hatred now.He closed the distance fast and kicked me hard, right where my body was already covered in wounds."Why did it have to be you? Why you, of all people?"Pain tore through me, old wounds layered under new ones, until my whole body shook from it.The old me would have fought back with everything I had.But now, I didn't even have the strength to defend myself.I gave up completely. I closed my eyes and let his fists and feet come down on me.My voice came out hoarse and small, almost begging."Just kill me... please just finish it."He loo

Tearing pain in my flesh jolted me awake. I opened my eyes to find a pack of Rogues dragging me deeper into the Nightwood, far from home.I fought them off with everything I had left and stumbled back toward the pack, falling with nearly every step.I thought about leaving the pack before. But without my father's approval, I couldn't get the papers to release me.I tried running before too, but the Obsidian Pack mark made it easy for my father to track me down and drag me back for more punishment.I was like a bug caught in a spider's web with no way out, just waiting to die.By the time I got home, my father was already asleep. My stepsisters looked at me like I disgusted them and covered their noses."Just stay in your room and behave. Don't make Dad angry again."They took my phone too."It won't matter who you call. If you don't want another beating, stop wasting your time."I went back to my room without a word and tended to my own wounds alone.I'd given up fighting bac
