Chapter 1

I threw myself into Ash Callhan's path, right where it led to the Moon Temple, and grabbed hold of him with everything I had.

"Ash, you can't go in there."

Deep in the Nightwood, silvery moonlight spilled over the altar inside the Moon Temple.

Ash stopped in front of the temple and looked at me, gentle as ever.

"Willow, this is Obsidian Pack tradition. I have to pass the Moon Goddess's trial before I can marry you."

My voice shook. I was almost begging him.

"Something's wrong here. Every man who's walked into that temple has come out a different person. You'd be the tenth, Ash. I can't lose you."

Ash blinked, then took my hand.

"Maybe they just failed the Moon Goddess's trial. They wanted to leave you and couldn't admit it, so they made themselves hate you instead. But that won't happen to me. I know how I feel about you.

"Even if the Moon Goddess shows me something on that altar, it won't change a thing."

I shook my head hard. He didn't understand what he was walking into.

Ever since I turned eighteen, every man I'd brought back here, no matter how much he loved me, left the Moon Temple wanting to end things with me. Some of them wanted to end me.

Heartbroken and confused, I'd gone to my father, Edward Mercer, each time. Each time, he told me the same thing.

"Willow, you've angered the Moon Goddess. This is her punishment."

To keep the rest of the pack calm, he'd punish me brutally every single time.

But I'd never once disrespected the Moon Goddess. My prayers were always sincere. How could I have possibly angered her?

I was scared and confused, and I'd asked a few close friends in the pack if they'd ever heard of anything like what was happening to me.

"This tradition's been around for centuries. I've never heard of anything this messed up. The Moon Goddess only gives blessings. She doesn't curse people. Why don't you go into the temple yourself and see?"

But my father always insisted only male wolves were allowed inside. Even as Alpha, he claimed he couldn't break that rule for me.

The more I asked, the worse the beatings got.

At one point I'd even wondered if I wasn't really his daughter, and I'd secretly run a blood test behind his back.

But the results were clear. We shared the closest blood tie there was.

So I couldn't understand it.

My father knew exactly what happened to every man who walked into that temple. He knew they'd all end up hating me.

And yet he never once tried to stop it.

Instead, he kept sending them in himself.

Those memories filled me with dread now, and I clung to Ash even harder.

"Ash, please don't go in there. We don't have to bond. I'll leave the Obsidian Pack if that's what it takes. Just don't go through that door..."

I didn't finish the thought out loud, the part where he'd come out hating me, wanting me dead for no reason at all.

Ash pulled me into a gentle hug instead.

"Willow, every couple who wants to bond has to receive the Moon Goddess's blessing. That's tradition. Besides, your father's the Alpha. If even his own daughter won't follow the rules, how's he supposed to keep the rest of the pack in line?"

I held onto him anyway, more determined than ever that Ash wasn't getting anywhere near that temple tonight.

But in the next instant, a wave of crushing pressure slammed into me, and my knees buckled straight to the ground.

It was my father's Alpha aura. There was no mistaking it.

I fought to lift my head and reached out toward Ash, begging him for help.

But his eyes were already fixed on the altar inside the temple. My cries didn't reach him at all.

Dread surged through my chest.

"Ash, no!"

My voice didn't stop his feet. All I could do was watch him walk through that door into everything unknown.

I finally broke down and collapsed on the ground, my hands clawing uselessly at the dirt.

'Ash, please be the exception. Please, Moon Goddess. Don't take one more man who loves me away from me.'

I stayed unconscious for two full days before I finally woke up.The moment I opened my eyes, I saw my grandpa standing by my bed. When he noticed I was awake, he rushed over and reached for my hand. The memory of him beating me flashed through my mind instantly, and I flinched back on instinct, pulling away from him.My voice came out hoarse and panicked."Where's Captain Hale? I need to see him."My grandpa's hand froze in midair, a flash of unspeakable pain crossing his eyes. After a moment, his voice came out thick with guilt."You're finally awake, Willow. Captain Hale's handling something right now. I'm so sorry. I should have seen through your father's plan. I misjudged him completely. I never imagined he'd be cruel enough to hurt his own daughter like this."All the tears I'd been holding back finally broke loose and slid silently down my face.My grandpa wrapped his arms around me and held me tight.I'd gotten my freedom back, but my heart didn't feel nearly as ligh

Day after day passed, but strangely, no one ever came to put me on trial. The waiting slowly wore down what little patience I had left.I was just about to demand to see Damian when the door swung open from the outside.Damian walked in, his eyes settling quietly on me. His expression was complicated, thick with something like pity.He shook his head and let out a heavy sigh.I spoke first, my voice flat and without a trace of emotion."Captain Hale, you don't need to feel sorry for me. I deserve whatever's coming. I can take any punishment you decide."He reached out slowly and brushed a few loose strands of hair from my face, his voice gentle."You poor thing. I can't even imagine what you've been through all these years. We've found out the whole truth. You're free to go."I stared at him blankly, my mind a complete mess."Free? What truth? The record inside the Moon Temple was crystal clear. Wasn't everything already out in the open?"He looked at me, his eyes full of pa

The two men who pushed through the tent flap were my father and grandfather. My father's face was frantic. He rushed straight to me and grabbed my arm, his voice sharp with panic."Willow, what are you planning to do?"The second I saw him, everything I'd been holding in broke loose. I collapsed against his chest, my voice cracking."Dad, you should never have kept me. It's because you protected me all these years that I got the chance to do all these horrible things. I'm turning myself in and ending this."The word confess made my father's grip tighten, his voice edging toward something obsessive."What? Confess? You're my daughter. If anyone punishes you, it'll be me and no one else. I won't let the Royal Guard take you."I shoved him off with everything I had, my eyes gone flat and dead."I deserve this. Whatever they do to me is exactly what I've earned."My grandfather was standing off to the side. He stepped forward with a cold expression and confronted my father."You'

The man stepped closer and leaned in to report quietly to Damian."Captain Hale, the two of them claim they're her father and grandfather. Their stories match up perfectly. Both of them say no one's touched her, that every wound on her body is self-inflicted."He paused, dropping his voice even lower."There's more. Her father specifically told us she's mentally unstable, that she hurts herself regularly."Damian's frown deepened at that.He let the questioning drop for now, picked up a cup of tea from the table, and walked over to press it gently into my hands. The cup held a faint warmth, but my hands stayed ice cold.He looked me straight in the eye, his voice softening as he asked again."Tell me honestly. Is someone threatening you, forcing you to hide the truth?"I gripped the cup tighter, my fingers trembling.I shook my head again."No. No one's threatening me. This is all on me."Seeing how firm I was, Damian realized he wasn't going to get the truth out of me anyt

As I stood inside the Moon Temple, a cold, hollow feeling swept through me.My knees gave out, and I dropped to the floor. I stared blankly ahead and repeated the same words."How could this be... how could this be..."Behind me, my grandpa glared at me. His eyes were cold and burning with a hatred that cut to the bone."Now you know exactly how disgusting you are."Whatever tenderness he'd shown me before had flipped into pure hatred now.He closed the distance fast and kicked me hard, right where my body was already covered in wounds."Why did it have to be you? Why you, of all people?"Pain tore through me, old wounds layered under new ones, until my whole body shook from it.The old me would have fought back with everything I had.But now, I didn't even have the strength to defend myself.I gave up completely. I closed my eyes and let his fists and feet come down on me.My voice came out hoarse and small, almost begging."Just kill me... please just finish it."He loo

Tearing pain in my flesh jolted me awake. I opened my eyes to find a pack of Rogues dragging me deeper into the Nightwood, far from home.I fought them off with everything I had left and stumbled back toward the pack, falling with nearly every step.I thought about leaving the pack before. But without my father's approval, I couldn't get the papers to release me.I tried running before too, but the Obsidian Pack mark made it easy for my father to track me down and drag me back for more punishment.I was like a bug caught in a spider's web with no way out, just waiting to die.By the time I got home, my father was already asleep. My stepsisters looked at me like I disgusted them and covered their noses."Just stay in your room and behave. Don't make Dad angry again."They took my phone too."It won't matter who you call. If you don't want another beating, stop wasting your time."I went back to my room without a word and tended to my own wounds alone.I'd given up fighting bac
