Chapter 3

Author: Snail
Tearing pain in my flesh jolted me awake. I opened my eyes to find a pack of Rogues dragging me deeper into the Nightwood, far from home.

I fought them off with everything I had left and stumbled back toward the pack, falling with nearly every step.

I thought about leaving the pack before. But without my father's approval, I couldn't get the papers to release me.

I tried running before too, but the Obsidian Pack mark made it easy for my father to track me down and drag me back for more punishment.

I was like a bug caught in a spider's web with no way out, just waiting to die.

By the time I got home, my father was already asleep. My stepsisters looked at me like I disgusted them and covered their noses.

"Just stay in your room and behave. Don't make Dad angry again."

They took my phone too.

"It won't matter who you call. If you don't want another beating, stop wasting your time."

I went back to my room without a word and tended to my own wounds alone.

I'd given up fighting back, but then my maternal grandfather, Cedric Reed, showed up. He couldn't reach me, so he came looking for me in person.

He barged into my room. When he saw the state I was in, he slapped my father across the face.

"This is how you take care of my granddaughter? She's your only blood! If you don't want her, don't force her to stay here either. Willow, come with me. I'm taking you away from the Obsidian Pack."

My grandpa was the Alpha of the Nightwind Pack, and his territory was twice the size of my father's.

He was the most respected Alpha in the entire southern territory. Even my father didn't dare cross him.

But when he stood up for me, my expression went pale.

"Grandpa, I'm fine. Please just go home."

A bone-deep fear had taken over. All I wanted was for the grandpa I loved most to never set foot in the Obsidian Pack again.

He gripped my hand tightly.

"Sweetheart, what are you talking about? Your father did this to you. Why are you still protecting him?"

He lifted his head and looked at my father coldly.

"You owe me an explanation. Why would you do this to your own daughter?"

"Grandpa!"

I cut off whatever my father was about to say and threw my arms around my grandpa.

"I know you're doing this for me, but promise me one thing, and you have to keep it. Promise me you'll never go into the Moon Temple in the Obsidian Pack."

He patted my trembling shoulder gently.

"Don't worry, I won't go anywhere near that temple. All I care about is whether my granddaughter is safe."

He let out a long, heavy sigh, his eyes rimmed red.

"My daughter never got the life she deserved. She met the Moon Goddess far too young. You're all I have left of her. I'll protect you no matter what."

I clung to him and sobbed, years of buried pain pouring out all at once.

With his promise, I fell asleep that night for the first time in years actually feeling safe.

But the next morning, the house was dead quiet, and that silence set my nerves on edge.

My father and my two stepsisters were waiting outside my door with chains. The second I stepped out, they had me bound tight.

"I underestimated you. You actually ran and told on me."

One of my stepsisters yanked hard on my hair, a smirk on her lips.

"Dad, it's time we dealt with her."

I shoved my stepsister off me and bolted for the door, running for my life.

The killing intent coming off them was too strong. If I didn't run now, I wouldn't survive this.

The second I reached the door, I spotted my grandpa. I ran straight to him and threw my arms around his leg.

"Grandpa, help me, Dad's going to kill me!"

But the grandpa who'd always been so gentle with me shook me off in disgust.

"You had this coming."

His words hit me like ice water.

"Grandpa... you went to the Moon Temple?"

No. He'd promised me he wouldn't!

He looked down at me, his eyes cold and terrifying.

"I'm glad I did. Otherwise, how would I have ever seen what you really are?"

I finally broke down completely.

"What's in that temple? Please just tell me. Let me at least understand why I have to die."

My father walked toward me slowly. He exchanged a look with my grandpa, gave a single nod, and led me inside the Moon Temple himself.

I walked step by step toward the altar, my eyes widening further with every step, until I couldn't speak at all.

"So that's what this is..."

I stayed unconscious for two full days before I finally woke up.The moment I opened my eyes, I saw my grandpa standing by my bed. When he noticed I was awake, he rushed over and reached for my hand. The memory of him beating me flashed through my mind instantly, and I flinched back on instinct, pulling away from him.My voice came out hoarse and panicked."Where's Captain Hale? I need to see him."My grandpa's hand froze in midair, a flash of unspeakable pain crossing his eyes. After a moment, his voice came out thick with guilt."You're finally awake, Willow. Captain Hale's handling something right now. I'm so sorry. I should have seen through your father's plan. I misjudged him completely. I never imagined he'd be cruel enough to hurt his own daughter like this."All the tears I'd been holding back finally broke loose and slid silently down my face.My grandpa wrapped his arms around me and held me tight.I'd gotten my freedom back, but my heart didn't feel nearly as ligh

Day after day passed, but strangely, no one ever came to put me on trial. The waiting slowly wore down what little patience I had left.I was just about to demand to see Damian when the door swung open from the outside.Damian walked in, his eyes settling quietly on me. His expression was complicated, thick with something like pity.He shook his head and let out a heavy sigh.I spoke first, my voice flat and without a trace of emotion."Captain Hale, you don't need to feel sorry for me. I deserve whatever's coming. I can take any punishment you decide."He reached out slowly and brushed a few loose strands of hair from my face, his voice gentle."You poor thing. I can't even imagine what you've been through all these years. We've found out the whole truth. You're free to go."I stared at him blankly, my mind a complete mess."Free? What truth? The record inside the Moon Temple was crystal clear. Wasn't everything already out in the open?"He looked at me, his eyes full of pa

The two men who pushed through the tent flap were my father and grandfather. My father's face was frantic. He rushed straight to me and grabbed my arm, his voice sharp with panic."Willow, what are you planning to do?"The second I saw him, everything I'd been holding in broke loose. I collapsed against his chest, my voice cracking."Dad, you should never have kept me. It's because you protected me all these years that I got the chance to do all these horrible things. I'm turning myself in and ending this."The word confess made my father's grip tighten, his voice edging toward something obsessive."What? Confess? You're my daughter. If anyone punishes you, it'll be me and no one else. I won't let the Royal Guard take you."I shoved him off with everything I had, my eyes gone flat and dead."I deserve this. Whatever they do to me is exactly what I've earned."My grandfather was standing off to the side. He stepped forward with a cold expression and confronted my father."You'

The man stepped closer and leaned in to report quietly to Damian."Captain Hale, the two of them claim they're her father and grandfather. Their stories match up perfectly. Both of them say no one's touched her, that every wound on her body is self-inflicted."He paused, dropping his voice even lower."There's more. Her father specifically told us she's mentally unstable, that she hurts herself regularly."Damian's frown deepened at that.He let the questioning drop for now, picked up a cup of tea from the table, and walked over to press it gently into my hands. The cup held a faint warmth, but my hands stayed ice cold.He looked me straight in the eye, his voice softening as he asked again."Tell me honestly. Is someone threatening you, forcing you to hide the truth?"I gripped the cup tighter, my fingers trembling.I shook my head again."No. No one's threatening me. This is all on me."Seeing how firm I was, Damian realized he wasn't going to get the truth out of me anyt

As I stood inside the Moon Temple, a cold, hollow feeling swept through me.My knees gave out, and I dropped to the floor. I stared blankly ahead and repeated the same words."How could this be... how could this be..."Behind me, my grandpa glared at me. His eyes were cold and burning with a hatred that cut to the bone."Now you know exactly how disgusting you are."Whatever tenderness he'd shown me before had flipped into pure hatred now.He closed the distance fast and kicked me hard, right where my body was already covered in wounds."Why did it have to be you? Why you, of all people?"Pain tore through me, old wounds layered under new ones, until my whole body shook from it.The old me would have fought back with everything I had.But now, I didn't even have the strength to defend myself.I gave up completely. I closed my eyes and let his fists and feet come down on me.My voice came out hoarse and small, almost begging."Just kill me... please just finish it."He loo
