**Chapter Three**

The inside of the cottage smelled like dried herbs and woodsmoke, and it was, Ronan noted distantly, the calmest he'd felt inside four walls in longer than he could remember.

Lyra didn't offer him a chair so much as point at one, hard, and busied herself at the hearth with her back to him — putting distance between them the only way the small space allowed. When she finally turned around, she had a cup of something dark and bitter-smelling, and she set it down in front of him without ceremony.

"Drink that. It won't fix anything, but it'll stop you from shaking."

"I'm not shaking."

"You are. You just haven't noticed yet because you've spent so long white-knuckling through it that trembling registers as normal to you." She said it without heat, an observation rather than an accusation, and it landed harder for that. She sat across from him, arms crossed, studying him the way he imagined she studied a plant she wasn't sure was poisonous. "Tell me about the curse."

"Why would I tell a stranger that."

"Because the stranger's wardline is the only thing that's kept you human for the last ten minutes, and you'd like to know why, same as I would." Her jaw was tight. "I didn't invite this. I didn't ask my magic to reach for you. Believe me, Alpha, if I'd had a say in it, you'd still be face-down in my garden."

That, at least, he believed. There was no softness in her, no performance — just a wary, exhausted honesty that matched something in his own chest.

"It's a bloodline curse," he said finally. "Old. Older than the pack records go. Every generation, it skips — sometimes two, sometimes five. When it lands, it doesn't kill you outright. It just… peels the human away from the wolf, a little more each moon, until there's nothing left wearing your face but the animal."

"How long."

"Old Maeve gives me three moons before it's past stopping."

Lyra's arms tightened across her chest. "And you came out here because—"

"I didn't come out here. I told you, I didn't mean to come this far." He looked down at the untouched cup. "I was losing the fight tonight. Worse than usual. And then I was standing in your yard and it just — stopped. Like something reached in and held the door shut."

"That was me," she said, quiet. "Or my magic, anyway. I don't fully control the difference anymore, which is its own problem." She studied him a long moment, and something in her expression shifted — not warmer, exactly, but less guarded. "I was cast out of my coven for the same reason you're looking at me like that right now. My magic doesn't behave. It doesn't follow the old registers, it doesn't answer to anyone's rules but its own, and six years ago that meant it reached for something during a binding ceremony that it had no business touching. People got hurt. I got blamed. I've spent every year since making sure it never happens again."

"And tonight it happened again."

"Tonight it happened again," she agreed grimly. "For you. Which means either this is a coincidence I'm supposed to believe in, or your curse and my magic are answering the same question, and I don't like either answer."

Ronan finally reached for the cup and drank — bitter, earthy, and it did, in fact, steady the tremor in his hands he hadn't wanted to admit to. "What question."

Lyra held his gaze, and for the first time since he'd stumbled into her clearing, he saw something underneath the wariness — a flicker of the same unwilling recognition his own chest had been aching with since the moment her wardline touched him.

"I don't know yet," she said. "But I don't think either of us gets to walk away without finding out."

**Chapter Seventy**Three years passed with the particular swiftness Elara had come to expect from a life full to overflowing with purpose — coalition governance settling into confident, well-established rhythm; Ravensworth flourishing under Kael's increasingly assured leadership; Sable growing from an unsteady, magic-scorching toddler into a bright, curious five-year-old whose easy connection to the northern site's ancient power had, if anything, only deepened with time.It was a season of genuine peace, the kind Elara had learned, through hard experience, never quite to take fully for granted — and so she wasn't entirely surprised, though she was considerably alarmed, when Seraphine arrived unannounced at Ravensworth on a gray autumn afternoon, her expression carrying the same grave urgency Elara remembered from childhood stories of House Voss's original threat."Seraphine." Elara rose quickly from the study desk where she'd been reviewing coalition correspondence, old instinct shar

**Chapter Sixty-Nine**Sable's first year passed the way Elara imagined most first years did for families lucky enough to have the luxury of ordinary time — full of small, extraordinary things that felt enormous only to the people living inside them. A first laugh that came out as an undignified snort, which Kael insisted on retelling at every pack gathering for months afterward. A first small burst of uncontrolled magic that scorched a neat black circle into the nursery rug, which sent both parents into a full ten minutes of panic before Ilsa, summoned in haste, pronounced it entirely normal and, if anything, a touch precocious."She's early," Ilsa said, crouching to examine the little scorch mark with the same careful, delighted attention she'd once given Elara's own first stirrings of magic. "Most children don't show even this much before they're two, sometimes three. I'd wager she's inherited more than simply her grandfather's eyes.""Is that dangerous?" Kael asked, old protective

**Chapter Sixty-Eight**The child arrived on a clear winter morning, Ravensworth's manor filled with the same anxious, hopeful energy that had once accompanied Elara's own birth at Blackthorn decades before.Kael paced the halls outside their private chamber with barely restrained anxiety, old family stories about Ronan's similar nervous vigil during Elara's own birth providing little genuine comfort despite their familiar, reassuring resonance."First children rarely arrive quickly," Corwin observed dryly, having traveled from Blackthorn specifically to provide support during this significant milestone, old family friendship extending naturally into this newest generation's important moments. "Your father-in-law paced these same kinds of anxious circles for the better part of a full day before Elara finally arrived.""That's hardly reassuring, Corwin.""It wasn't meant as reassurance, precisely. Merely honest acknowledgment that this particular anxiety, however uncomfortable, represe

**Chapter Sixty-Seven**The months following Elara and Kael's wedding brought rapid transition as Ravensworth's succession proceeded on schedule, Kael formally assuming Alpha leadership within weeks of their return from a brief wedding journey through several of the coalition's more scenic member territories."How does it feel?" Elara asked, the evening after his formal confirmation ceremony, the two of them settling into what would now become their permanent residence at Ravensworth's manor house."Considerably more daunting than I anticipated, if I'm entirely honest," Kael admitted, though his expression carried genuine, settled determination rather than any real uncertainty about his capability to meet the challenge. "Though having you beside me makes the weight of it feel considerably more manageable than I suspect I'd otherwise find it.""That's precisely how genuine partnership should function," Elara said, warmth evident in her voice as she settled beside him. **Chapter Sixty-Six**News of Elara's engagement spread quickly through both Blackthorn and Ravensworth territories, and the following months brought the particular whirlwind of joyful preparation that accompanied significant celebration across two proud, extensive pack communities eager to honor this meaningful union."We should discuss where the ceremony might take place," Lyra said, during one planning session that had grown to include not simply the immediate family, but Wren, Corwin's family, and periodic correspondence with Ravensworth's own leadership regarding the practical logistics of joining two significant territories' traditions."I'd like it to reflect both our families' significant histories," Elara said thoughtfully. "Perhaps something drawing on both Blackthorn's traditional practices and Ravensworth's own pack customs, alongside proper coven elements honoring my mother's heritage as well.""A blended ceremony, then," Ronan said, warmth evident in his voice as he cons

**Chapter Sixty-Five**The courtship between Elara and Kael developed steadily over the following year, careful correspondence gradually supplemented by increasingly frequent visits as both worked to balance their considerable professional responsibilities against the deepening personal connection they were building together."He's coming to Blackthorn," Elara announced one afternoon, arriving at her parents' manor with evident excitement several months into the formal courtship. "I've invited him to properly meet you both, given how seriously our relationship has developed these past months."Lyra's face lit with genuine delight at the news. "Elara, that's wonderful. When should we expect him?""Within the week. I confess, I'm rather nervous about the introduction, despite how well things have progressed between us thus far.""Understandable, though I suspect your father and I will find little difficulty appreciating someone who's clearly earned such genuine happiness in our daughter
