Seraphine’s POV

We didn’t speak the entire walk back from the ruins. My hands shook inside my gloves and every few steps I felt his eyes on the side of my face.

I kept my gaze straight ahead, anywhere but him.

When we reached the pack house he walked straight through the main doors, I stayed close behind him because I had no choice.

He led me up the staircase, down to his private study.

He pushed the door open with one hand and stepped aside for me to walk in.

The door closed behind us and

Seraphine’s POV Lysandra stood so fast her chair scraped. “Alpha, you cannot—” “I can,” he said. “And I did.” Torin’s mouth opened. “This is unprecedented.” Rhydian turned to the pack. “She stays. Anyone who touches her answers to me.” The room erupted, people yelled, some cheered, and most looked furious. As I stared at him, my heart slammed against my ribs. He had just put himself between me and the whole pack. Lysandra’s face went pale and she looked at me with pure hatred. Rhydian walked to me. “Come,” he said quietly. I followed him out, and the doors shut behind us. The doors to the council room had barely closed behind us when Rhydian let go of my hand. His fingers slipped away quickly, as if touching me burned him. I stopped walking and looked up at him, waiting for something to show he was still the man who had just stood between me and death. He kept moving, three steps ahead, he stopped. “Rhydian.” I called him. He turned slowly, and his ey

  • The Moon Witch’s Second Life   Chapter 20: The Trial

Seraphine’s POVThey came for me at dawn. When I heard the pounding steps, I sat up quickly and the blanket fell off my shoulders. Rhydian was already awake. He stood by the window, arms crossed, staring at the door lost in thoughts.Three sharp knocks came at the door. “Alpha,” Eldric’s voice said from the other side. “The council is ready and they want her now.”Rhydian turned to me, without smiling. I swallowed. “It’s okay,” I said, even though nothing felt okay. “I’ll go.”He crossed the room and grabbed my hand. “You don’t have to do this alone.”“I know.” I squeezed back. “But I have to face them.”He pulled me close for one second, gave me a quick hug and let go. Then the door opened. Eldric stood there with four guards. Their faces were blank, but their hands stayed near their belts. They did not look at me like a guest anymore, they looked at me like a danger. We walked through the pack house in silence, heads turned as we passed and the whispers followed. “Witch.”“Mu

  • The Moon Witch’s Second Life   Chapter 19: Murder Investigation

Seraphine’s POVElder Mara lay on the floor. Her body was twisted at unnatural angles, her arms were bent backward and fingers curled into rigid claws. Her eyes stared sightless at the ceiling and black veins crawled across her skin with dark residue clung to her robes and to the stones around her. It looked like traces of forbidden magic. I dropped to my knees and hovered my hands over her but I couldn’t bring myself to touch her.A sob ripped out of me then I heard footsteps. I was scared and quickly stepped aside. It was Rhydian, he followed me earlier without my knowing. My screaming made him reveal himself. Immediately he saw me on my knees, and saw Mara, his face went pale. “No,” he whispered. “No.”“Whoever it was had used black magic to leave no doubt.”I clung to Rhydian and my fingers twisted in his shirt.***I could not stop shaking after we found Elder Mara. Rhydian held me close in her cottage, and his shirt got wet from my tears. He did not let go for a long ti

  • The Moon Witch’s Second Life   Chapter 18: The Elder’s Warning

Seraphine’s POVSomeone knocked at the door and Rhydian wore a shirt, and went to open the door. He stood there discussing with the guard, I barely heard what they talked about. Then the door clicked shut.Rhydian came back to the bed. He sat on the edge and brushed a strand of hair from my face with the back of his knuckles.“Elder Mara asked to see you alone,” he said quietly. “She says it’s urgent.”From his look, he looked tired with sleep under his eyes. “I’ll go,” I told him.His hand tightened on the blanket. “I don’t like you going alone.”“She asked for me specifically.”He stared at me for a long moment, finally he nodded in agreement. “I’ll walk you to the gate.”He helped me up and my side ached when I moved. He got me a simple green dress, and helped me into it. His fingers were gentle as he tied the laces at my back. Every time his knuckles grazed my skin, small warm sparks prickled along my spine. I felt him pause each time, and felt his breath hitch, but he didn’

  • The Moon Witch’s Second Life   Chapter 17: Healing Hands

Seraphine’s POVI came back to myself slowly and tried to move my fingers, but a pain throbbed low in my ribs. When I opened my eyes, the room was dim and only one lamp burned on the bedside table. I saw stretched shadows across the wall and I recognised the space immediately. It was Rhydian’s bedroom, his private room on the top floor where no one else was allowed. The bed was huge, carved from dark wood and the sheets under me were soft. I lay on my back with my torn dress replaced by one of his oversized linen shirts. My gaze moved to the chair pulled close beside the bed. Rhydian sat there, asleep. His head rested against the bed, and his arms lay loose on his lap. One hand reached out and held mine, his fingers were wrapped around my left hand where Vaelan’s mark hid under the bandage. His chest heaved and dark circles were under his eyes. A streak of my blood still stained his cheeks from when he carried me. I stared at him. My throat tightened. He looked wrecked and exh

  • The Moon Witch’s Second Life   Chapter 16: Jealousy Ignites

Seraphine’s POVI stayed in my room most of the morning after Rhydian locked me in his study the night before. He let me out at dawn with nothing more than a quiet “Go rest” and a suspicious look.I walked back to my room on heavy legs and my palm still burned under the glove where Vaelan’s mark hid. My ribs ached from the reversed mate mark. I couldn’t or sleep. I just sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the wall until the sounds of the pack house waking up drifted under my door.Suddenly, voices grew louder in the halls, seems something important was happening today. I felt it in the air, in the way the wolves moved faster than usual. I pulled on a plain gray dress and slipped out before anyone could come looking for me.The great hall was already full when I reached the upper balcony that overlooked it. I stayed in the shadows behind one of the thick support beams, where no one saw me. Down below, the pack elders sat in a half-circle of carved wooden chairs. Rhydian sto
