Chapter 1

My mate, Luther Evans, had spent 20 thousand dollars on two first-class tickets for the Moonlight Express to Vespera Coast. Just as we were about to board, he pulled me aside and gave my seat to my foster sister, Zoey Turner.

He explained, "There's only one empty seat left on the train, and Zoey's son has never seen the ocean before. This is the perfect chance. Kids can't be separated from their mothers, so I'll take them first and get them settled, then come back for you."

I nodded and stepped off the train, watching it disappear into the distance. Once they reached the beach, a friend asked Luther why I hadn't come along.

He was busy inflating a pool float for Zoey, answering casually without looking up. "The Moonlight Express runs every three days. Avery Smith can just buy her own ticket and come later. I'll pick up some gifts to make it up to her. She's really understanding and won't stay mad at me."

A bitter smile tugged at the corners of my mouth. The whole family had always favored Zoey, and now even my own mate was no different.

Since nobody wanted to see me anyway, I decided I would leave in three days.

I never expected to see Zoey before our honeymoon trip. The Moonlight Express was about to depart, but Luther had not boarded yet, so I went out to find him.

There, I saw him looking toward the entrance.

From a distance, Zoey was walking over unhurriedly with her son, William Lowe, in tow. When she got closer, she smiled at me.

"Avery, Luther told me you're really excited about vacationing together with us." Her tone was gentle, but the way she looked at me was arrogant.

There was no way I would have invited her to come.

Luther reached over to help load her luggage onto the train, but the conductor stopped him with an apologetic expression. "Sir, there's only one first-class seat remaining."

The Moonlight Express offered full-service immersive scenic touring, and it was exactly the honeymoon experience I had always wanted. It was peak season at Vespera Coast right now, so the standard seats had sold out early, while first-class seats cost five times as much.

Luther frowned slightly, but he did not say anything.

Zoey lowered her gaze with obvious disappointment. "William and I won't be going then. Have a wonderful trip, you two."

She looked up with a smile and added, "William was so excited about riding the Moonlight Express first-class to the beach that he couldn't sleep all night. When you see the ocean, could you record it for him? Just so he has something to remember."

Luther fell silent for a moment. When he glanced over, he met William's expectant eyes. He sighed and reached out to pull me down from the boarding steps.

"Avery, Zoey just severed her mate bond, and she's really struggling emotionally. Plus, William has never left the pack before. The Moonlight Express only runs every three days. Could you let Zoey have your seat? I'll come back for you, I promise."

I did not see any reluctance in Luther's eyes.

This trip was supposed to be my honeymoon. I had booked the hotel and planned the route, and the 20 thousand dollars for the two tickets came from my pre-marriage savings. Yet now, there was no place for me on the train.

Zoey was rightfully enjoying everything that belonged to me. My mate was spending my money, taking credit for my planning, and going on vacation with the foster sister I despised most.

The whole situation felt absurd, and my wolf was furious.

Luther loaded Zoey's luggage onto the train and brought mine back to the platform. As I watched his movements, I suddenly felt like he was a complete stranger.

The train slowly started moving, and Zoey sat by the window, waving at me with a smile. I saw Luther leaning down to help William with his seatbelt, completely forgetting that I was still standing on the platform.

During the ten-hour scenic journey, Zoey posted over a dozen photos on Instagram. At first, they were of the scenery outside the window, but later almost all of them showed Luther's profile as he gazed out the window.

One wolf even teased in the comment. [Zoey, is this your new mate? What a commanding presence.]

Zoey did not deny it. She only replied with a happy emoji and kept posting updates.

Midway through the trip, Luther contacted me through our mind-link.

His voice was gentle as he said, "Avery, be good and wait for me. Once I get them settled, I'll come right back for you."

Under the blazing sun, I walked home with my head down while my wolf raged in my mind.

Time kept ticking by. A day and night passed, and Luther had yet to return. Meanwhile, Zoey posted another update on Instagram. She was wearing a sexy bikini, lazily sprawled across a banana boat.

A friend who was supposed to meet us at the beach called me, saying Luther was lounging in a beach chair. I could hear voices in the background.

Someone else was asking Luther, "Hey Luther, didn't you say you were going to pick up your mate?"

During the three years I was gone, Luther had never stopped searching for me. The excessive stress and anxiety caused mental exhaustion, and the constant traveling wore down his body, leaving his spirit deeply fatigued and unable to sleep. To suppress his mental instability, he began taking suppressants. Initially, the dosage was mild, but as his episodes became more frequent, he needed stronger and stronger medication. Now the drugs barely worked at all. When I stepped into the ward, the dull haze in his eyes lit up instantly. He teared up as he tried to sit up, but the movement pulled at his IV needle. Tessa rushed to call the doctor, but he only kept his gaze fixed on me. It was as if he was asking silently, "You won't leave again, right?" Tessa stood beside me, her expression was sorrowful as she turned to me, her eyes pleading. I gave a faint shake of my head and said softly, "We'll talk when you're strong enough to sit." He nodded, and a smile appeared at the cor

Seeing that Mom's tone was not harsh, Zoey smiled even more brightly. "I had the servants temporarily move everything to the basement. William needs space for training, and the bed and cabinets take up too much room. I was worried he might bump into them." "There are so many empty rooms in the mansion, so why did you specifically have to use Avery's room and move her personal belongings?" Mom's voice grew colder. Zoey remained unfazed as she replied, "But the other rooms are so small, and they're not suitable at all. Avery's room has so much stuff, so I cleared it out for training. Jasper, don't you agree with me?" This time, Jasper remained silent. Zoey's smile froze, and her eyes immediately reddened. Moments later, tears slid down her cheeks. She took William's hand and sobbed quietly. "I'm sorry, it's my fault. I'll take William and leave right now." "Good, go ahead." Before Mom could speak, Jasper coldly uttered those words. Then, he instructed the servants to rest

Luther's angry roar carried the dominance of a male wolf, scaring William into tears. Just then, Jasper came home from the academy and witnessed the scene. "Are you insane?" He quickly stepped forward, picked up William, and wiped the little cub's tears while frowning and gently soothing him. A servant standing nearby spoke in a low voice, "Ms. Turner asked me to handle it. She said the rug had gotten muddy and stained, and told me to dispose of it quickly." Luther's gaze slowly settled on Zoey, his entire presence radiating coldness. She smiled gently and explained, "William got playful and left claw marks on it. I thought I'd redecorate Avery's room so she'd feel better when she came back." … Luther stared at her, his eyes growing increasingly cold. Ever since Avery had returned to the Smith family, he had witnessed too many times how she was "accidentally" tripped or pushed aside by Zoey. He had also heard Zoey speak ill of Avery behind her back. Now, with Avery

  • The Moonlight Express   Chapter 5

I returned to the northern border village where I had once lived for ten years, that harsh land of snow and battlefields. During those years away, no one from the Smith family had asked after me. Even Luther never wanted to hear about it. I knew the contempt he felt in his heart. I came from a "disreputable" rogue wolf pack, one too far removed from the honor of their bloodline. … When I didn't show up for breakfast the next morning, Mom's face darkened. In the Smith residence, everyone was required to sit at the table. It was part of preserving the order of bloodlines. So, Mom sent a servant to my room. "Mrs. Smith, Ms. Smith left before dawn with her luggage. She said she was traveling to the northern territories with Mr. Evans." I ran into the servant when leaving that morning. To avoid suspicion, I casually mentioned I was going on a trip. Mom's eyes filled with disdain. She scoffed. "I thought she might actually sever their bond, but she's just trying to spite Zo

The night before I left happened to be my birthday. Mom had spent the whole day busy in the kitchen, while Dad came home early from his work at the council, his expression gentler than usual. Even Jasper took leave from the academy, carrying a neatly wrapped gift box in his arms. To be honest, it was the most lively birthday I had had since returning to the Smith family. Luther walked in from the yard, pushing a three-tiered cake that smelled of sweet cream. Then, he pulled out a velvet box from his pocket and opened it to reveal a vintage-style bracelet, elegant and surprisingly to my taste. It stirred something inside me. As I looked at the steaming dishes spread across the table, a bittersweet sense of attachment rose in my chest. Being able to have one complete family dinner before leaving felt like the most peaceful goodbye to this relationship. However, just as I was about to sit down, my gaze froze on two new sets of tableware placed at the table's edge. My heart

When I saw Luther, he looked worn down. All the words I had planned to say got stuck in my throat and turned into tears streaming down my face. He pulled me into a tight embrace, his voice urgent as he kept apologizing. "Avery, don't cry. This will never happen again, I'm sorry. I'll talk to Zoey…" Just then, Zoey walked over from a distance, holding William's hand. "I'm so sorry! William and I didn't mean to ruin your trip. William, apologize to Aunt Avery right now!" William immediately started crying and shouting loudly. Mom was alerted by the noise and came out, lovingly picking up William. "What's wrong, my sweet boy?" William wailed even louder. "Aunt Avery was mean to me…" Mom frowned and glanced at me disapprovingly. Meanwhile, Zoey pressed close to her side, wiping William's mouth, her voice soft enough to drip honey. "Avery, I came with Luther to apologize… I thought you'd be glad to have me join the trip to Vespera Coast. I never meant to take your seat, bu
