Chapter 3

Author: Panpan
I drifted above the cruise ship, watching them laugh and raise their glasses. I suddenly remembered all the times I'd been praised for being such an easy child.

On my first night back in the city at six years old, I wanted everyone to like me, so I knelt in the bathroom and hand-washed the family's laundry.

My fingers turned white and wrinkled, and my knees ached from kneeling so long.

Then Jessica shrieked, "Mom! She's going to ruin my dress!"

Mom didn't scold me. She just laughed and pulled Jessica into her arms. "What's the big deal? Where else would you find a little sister so helpful? We can always buy you another dress."

When I was eight years old, I helped cook Thanksgiving dinner for our relatives.

Hot oil splattered onto my wrist, leaving a painful burn.

From the living room, Mom called proudly, "Riley has always been so independent. She can cook, clean, you name it! Riley, why don't you make everyone some garlic butter shrimp?"

I bit my lip and stayed quiet. I didn't want to ruin her mood.

Even now, I still have the scar…

Mom and Dad never had to worry about Tommy's kindergarten projects. I always volunteered to do them for him.

Last Christmas, I stayed up until midnight making decorations for his class party.

The next day, he trampled them in front of his classmates and laughed.

Dad only frowned. "Tommy, watch it. What if Riley stops helping you with homework?"

Jessica was their pride and joy, the daughter who always made them look good.

Tommy was the little miracle Mom and Dad had been waiting for.

And then there was me—just the daughter born in between.

Jessica was five years older than me, and Tommy was five years younger.

I was just the kid in the middle, neither the favorite nor the baby. I had to be extra well-behaved and helpful just to feel like I belonged.

Mom and Dad were always telling everyone how easy I was to raise.

But they never once wondered why I never gave them any trouble.

I kept drifting until I found myself back outside Grandma's house.

Grandma's neighbor, Linda Moore, stopped by with a holiday basket of fruit and snacks.

No one answered. Buddy stood guard at the door, growling softly.

Afraid of Buddy, Linda left the basket on the porch and hurried away.

She'd been so close…

If only she'd opened the door, she would've found Grandma and me. She could've called my parents and told them what had happened!

But now, all we could do was lie motionless on the bed, our bodies growing cold as the smell of decay slowly filled the room.

Stray dogs prowled outside, and only Buddy's fierce vigilance kept them away.

"Three, two, one! Say cheese!"

Dad's laughter pulled me back to the cruise ship.

They were taking a family photo.

Dad had his arm around Jessica, while Mom held Tommy. All four of them were grinning from ear to ear.

The photographer asked, "Is everyone here?"

The sun was shining brightly on the day Grandma and I were laid to rest.My grave was surrounded by plates of bacon and ten enormous birthday cakes. There were piles of candy, chips, soda, and juice, too.Oh, and more seashell necklaces than I could count.Every cake had candles on it, along with the same message, "Happy Birthday to Our Precious Daughter, Pearl Carter, Our One and Only."Of course, Mom and Dad couldn't legally change my name now that I was dead. But in their hearts, they'd given me a new one.It was only after I died that I finally became their one and only precious little girl. They'd even had the words "Our Precious Daughter" engraved on my headstone. But when I was alive, they'd never said anything like that to me."Sweetheart, you can have anything you want. I will buy you whatever you like!"Thank you, Mom.But I couldn't taste anything anymore. I couldn't even smell it.Mom and Dad stood beside my grave for a long time, neither of them moving.Jessica

But as Mom and Dad cried, their grief slowly turned into anger.Dad suddenly pulled away from Mom and snapped, "Didn't I tell you to call Riley on Christmas Eve? You said she was a good kid and we had nothing to worry about! Well, where is she now? Where is she?"Mom jerked her head up, her voice rising. "Oh, so now it's my fault? Who told the whole family that Riley was the one we could always count on? Who left her at the bus station all alone without even looking back?""This is all your fault!" Dad shouted. "Tommy has more shoes than he knows what to do with, while Riley had to wear Jessica's old ones until her feet were covered in blisters! Did you ever care?"Mom fired back, "Oh, and you're such a wonderful father? You claim you don't play favorites, but all you ever cared about were Jessica's grades! When was the last time you even asked how Riley was doing in school?""That doesn't mean you had to make her do every damn chore in the house!""And what about you? You only b

Mom insisted on going home after just one night in the hospital. She acted as though everything was fine. She didn't cry or show any sadness. Instead, she kept herself busy, talking nonstop. "If Riley goes home and no one's there, she'll be scared."The light in her room is broken. I haven't had a chance to fix it, and it keeps flickering. I don't want it to distract her while she studies."I noticed a scar on her hand. We should take her to the doctor when we get the chance."Mom kept talking the entire drive until Dad finally lost it. He slammed on the brakes, turned around, and shouted, "Riley is dead! She's dead! Don't you get it?"Mom clutched her forehead and suddenly burst into tears. It was the first time she'd cried since I died. When they opened the front door, the house looked exactly as it had the night they'd left. The stove was off, but no one had cleaned up after dinner. The leftover stew had already turned sour.Jessica and Tommy started begging to go out and

"That's not Riley. It can't be her…" Mom shook her head, repeating the words under her breath. The officer opened his notebook, his voice grave as he began to speak. "Our investigation indicates that Helen Jagger died of a heart attack around noon on Christmas Eve. That means Helen was already dead when Riley got to her house. "Riley spent the night alone with Helen's body. Shortly before midnight, she ingested pesticide and left a suicide note."Mom's knees buckled, and she collapsed to the floor. The officer pulled out a clear evidence bag. Inside was a crumpled sheet of notebook paper covered in shaky handwriting. "This is the note she left behind. You should read it yourselves."Mom reached for the bag, but her body swayed, and she couldn't manage to stand.Dad rushed forward without looking at Mom. He took the evidence bag in both hands, trembling as he read the note aloud."Mom, Dad, I'm sorry. I wasn't good enough. You couldn't count on me…"You trusted me to take care

"It's the holidays! Don't say things like that!" Dad snapped, clearly displeased.Mom stepped forward, rolling her eyes. "Who are you people? Let me see some ID."The two officers flashed their badges. One of them spoke in a cold tone. "We found two female bodies at the scene. One was around 65 years old. The other was about ten years old."Mom and Dad stared at the badges, their palms sweating, but neither was willing to believe it."No! That's impossible!" Dad's voice trembled. "My mom and Riley were perfectly fine out in the countryside. They were perfectly fine a few days ago!""A few days ago?" the officer repeated. "When was the last time you saw your daughter, Riley Carter?""Christmas Eve…" Mom faltered. "We put her on a bus to Grandma's.""So, you let a ten-year-old girl travel alone to stay with her elderly grandmother?" The officer's tone hardened."She was the one who wanted to go!" Mom shot back."That's right," Dad added. "She grew up with her grandma. They're cl

No, no, no! I haven't even gotten into place yet!I hurried over to Mom and tugged at her sleeve. But my hand passed right through her, grasping nothing but air.Mom glanced at Dad. After a brief hesitation, she said, "Yes, we're all here!"The camera flashed. But I wasn't in the family photo. After they took the photo, I hovered nearby like an unwanted stray, watching them share a happiness that had never included me.Mom gently squeezed Tommy's cheeks as she rubbed lotion onto his face. "Don't get too tan, sweetie. You'll end up looking like Riley, all tan and scruffy like she just came off a farm."Dad smiled proudly at Jessica. "Enjoying the cruise? You've made us so proud!"When you're ready to study abroad, go for it. Don't worry about the money. And if you decide to stay there, that's fine, too."Jessica gave him a playful pout. "But what about you guys?"Mom chuckled. "What's there to worry about? We still have Riley. She's never been any trouble. Don't worry."Dad n
