LOGINKylan found herself sitting in the garden a few hours later. She had made some excuse, wanting to talk to Carter. Carter was a sweet man, raised to be Alpha after his father, and her entire world at this point. As much as it was her father’s wish that they marry, she had fallen in love with him years ago. With Richard gone, he had become her source of strength, her comfort. It was only natural that she wanted him right now.
She reached for him as he entered the area, already using the link. “I was just thinking about you…I’m so glad you’re here.” He pulled her into his embrace, her body melting as she soaked in his comfort, breathed in his scent. Sandalwood. A soft sigh left her as she nestled her face into his neck.
“Mm, I finally got a break. Studying has been brutal and we got that game coming up at the end of the week. I had to come see my best girl,” he kissed her collarbone, his arms secure around her. She never tired of this, unable to wait for their marking ceremony any longer than she had to. Her birthday was soon, and their ceremony would be shortly after that. Until then, every waking moment was spent in preparation. It was hard, but she knew the long days and stolen moments would all be worth it.
“I uh, got a letter today,” she settled, her back against his front. “From Alpha Rivers.” Her eyes drifted closed as she continued, “He wants to meet me. Well, he wants me to meet his Luna.”
“His Luna?”
“Well, yeah. Apparently, he thinks that I’m her sister or something?”“Uh, what?”
She laughed, “And that was my reaction.” She told him about the letter, offering to show him later when they went by the room. “But, I don’t know what to do. This seems impossible, and my birthday is in a week. We have so much to do before the ceremony.”“Well, do you have to go now? We can go together if you like after the ceremony.” Her brow furrowed as she thought about her answer before she hesitantly nodded. She had no idea what to think, so why shouldn’t she wait? Carter could go with her and help her figure out what was even going on. That took some weight off of her - the last thing she wanted was to travel to an unknown situation with that pack.
“You’ll really go with me? You won’t be too busy then?” She looked up at him, her eyes large with her worry over what this letter could even mean, what this trip could mean?“Of course. We’ll figure it out. Besides, your birthday is in a week and we have your birthday to plan. Sam has been burning her credit card at all the stores getting ready,” he laughed, watching her face. He loved Kylan, and wanted nothing more than to erase any worries she might have. “You deserve the best. Want anything special?” His mind flicked to the surprise he had planned for her as he dipped his head into the crook of her neck, nuzzling gently.
Shaking her head, Kylan was just looking forward to meeting her wolf and running under the full moon. Everyone knew that her birthday was set to be the party of the season, but for her, the real party was after. Her whole body almost vibrated at the thought. “Just you and me under the moon.”
“Deal, my sweet. After your party, just you and me.” The girl smiled at that, feeling better already.
“Hey Carter?”
“Hm?”“What do you know about my mom and dad moving here?” Kylan never thought she would ask, having grown up perfectly happy in the pack. She loved everything about their little village at the edge of the forest, from the packhouse bustling with activity to the calm, beautiful cottage with the prettiest of roses trailing over the thatched roof. Thinking about them now, she was overcome with a feeling of warmth, her hand finding its way to wrap her fingers around the pendant she wore about her neck.Carter looked at her thoughtfully, running his fingers through her hair. “Not much, I’m afraid. No one talks about it much. As far as the pack is concerned, they were always a part of us. If Alpha and Luna had heard anything else, it would have been squashed. My parents loved your parents.
Mom talked about it once. She was kind of drunk and we never talked about it again. She said that Beta Richard used to be an Alpha of another pack, but something happened. They found your dad at the edge of the pack grounds, near death, your mom crying for help. Dad couldn’t leave him like that so he brought him back to the packhouse and Mom nursed him back to health. All I know is Dad says he more than earned his place in the pack and nothing could ever change that.”
It wasn’t long before things fell into a pattern, a new normal. Kylan and Maureen got to know Lisette, learning of her life since coming to the Crescent River pack. Even though Lisette was medically fragile, she was coming out of her room more, even joining them occasionally for dinner. Alpha Markus seemed to always be watching them, more in the background than a part of things. At first, they weren’t sure what to make of the Alpha, but it didn’t take long for Carter and Kylan to feel comfortable with the situation. Kylan loved getting to know her sister and see how things happened in a bigger pack than the one she grew up in, just wished she hadn’t lost out on so many years with her. If she could make her better, she would do it.After a month away, Carter’s father called him back for pack business. There was a lot to be done to prepare for Alpha Cole to step down as Alpha and Carter to take his place. It was time to prepare for the life they were to lead once they returned h
Dinner was a humble yet filling meal. Kylan expected more based on the surroundings, but she was very pleased at the offerings they were given. The stew was filling and savory, paired well with the french bread and red wine. The Beta and Gamma brought their mates, rounding out the table. Most of the pack didn’t share the Alpha’s meal, so it was a quiet affair. Afterwards, they were taken to meet Kylan’s sister, Lisette. The Luna’s quarters were dimmed, but you could still see the elegance and refinement in her furnishings and decor. Jordan had led the way, talking about how Lisette had treated her like a sister when she had come to live with her mate. Jordan was from a neighboring pack, chosen after Alpha Markus and his Beta, Michael, had attended the mating ceremony of its Alpha and Luna. Michael had known from the moment he laid eyes on the beautiful girl that he had met the girl he would take as his mate, but it was still a shock for her to find him asking for her to acce
His office held several bookcases and one oversized desk. The room itself was sparse, as if no one could be bothered to decorate it. Her bright eyes took in everything as she came to stand before the Alpha’s desk, remaining standing until the man took his seat. Only then did she sit in the proffered seat. She felt small in this space, uncertain. Pulling out the letter, she passed it across the desk. Tilting her head, she watched his face. “I’m glad you got the letter. We weren’t sure what to do if you didn’t come. My Luna doesn’t have much time left and we are still hoping to save her before it’s too late. We believe you are meant to be here to ease her through this illness.” He seemed earnest enough, helping set the room at ease. Turning to look at the older woman behind her, Markus cut right to the chase, “And who are you?”“I’m her mother, Alpha Markus. Maureen Ashe.” The older woman swallowed, unsure of what to expect considering what she knew of losing her daughter.
It was barely light when they pulled out the drive. Carter was driving, letting Kylan rest in the back while her mother rode up front to keep him company. Two of his warriors took a second car, following them on the long drive to the Crescent River packlands. Their bags were loaded into the boot of both vehicles, making sure that they were prepared for whatever their journey afforded them. Kylan stared out the window as the woods faded into a gentle countryside, the steady sound of the tires rolling across the asphalt slowly lulling her to sleep. The first night, they spent at a tiny little bed and breakfast, quite quaint in the light of the sunrise. They were really lucky to be able to get three rooms at such short notice. It definitely didn’t hurt that they were still on the Blackwood lands; the owner of the building was honoured to have their next Alpha and his chosen mate choose to stay with them. The manager’s wife was a bubbly wolf, feeding them well and sharing stories
Coming to, she felt strong arms wrap firmly around her small frame. "Are you okay, Ky?" came the voice she knew better than her own. Nodding, she tried to sit up, but he wouldn't let her. "Not yet, you're still recovering." Recovering? Recovering from what? The last thing she remembered was her Shifting Ceremony and the hot feeling that had washed over her. A yawn escaped, as she snuggled close, rubbing her face against his chest. Why was she so tired? "You're okay, just fainted from shifting." Kylan turned a confused look his way and he reassured her, "Dad says it can happen sometimes. This is the first I've heard of it, but he says when there's something blocking it, or sometimes when someone is being gifted with a special power by the Goddess, they don't complete the shift the first time. He said you'll get another chance, but Ky, there's something you should know. The shift...it might have changed you."Wait, changed her? Changed her how? Pushing away from him, she t
The moon hung heavy in the sky the evening of her eighteenth birthday. The air seemed to vibrate, as if it knew what was coming. Kylan was filled with excitement, having dreamed of this day her entire life. As a pup growing up, her parents' stories were about the magic of turning and how it would enhance her entire life. She couldn’t wait for the senses that would come with her first shift, the feeling of the ground beneath her paws. Scratch that — she couldn’t wait to meet her wolf. She smiled, humming in her head even if she couldn’t in reality. It was strange sometimes, having grown up without a voice to go with the thoughts in her head. When she was younger, she had to deal with the unfeeling taunts of children, passing down the hushed whispers of adults. She was lucky to have Carter and his family — it only took once for everyone to learn that Kylan was off limits to bullies. No one liked facing the truth, but bullies in a society like theirs were commonplace.
