LOGINKylan’s mother was just putting supper on the table when she got home. Turning a bright smile upon the teen, Kylan was reminded of all the times she had come home to this very kitchen. She could almost see her dad still sitting at the table drinking his coffee and her mother smiling as if the world rose and set upon her family. If only it could be that way again. Her father’s laughter was missing from their lives and she would give anything to bring it back. “Hi Mom! What smells good?”
Sitting, she realized how hungry she was. Her stomach growled, her hand covering it as she ducked her head with embarrassment. Filling her plate with food, she quickly forgot that anything was even happening, her eyes lighting up at some of her favourites. For all that she didn’t put on weight, Kylan loved to eat.
It didn’t take long for the two to clear their plates. Kylan went to the modest kitchen, making her mother a warm drink fresh from the stove. It was almost a routine for them, a way for her to give back to her mother. Adding a dash of whiskey, she stirred it before completing the toddy with a stick of peppermint. Smiling, she brought it to her mother before the fire and went back to washing the dishes and putting them away.
Finally done, she returned to her mother, settling at the older woman’s feet and leaning against her legs. It was a familiar sight, mother and daughter before the fire as if nothing could be more comfortable. As they sat there, Ky stared at the sunset shining outside their front door. How many had her mother seen before finding their pack? How many since? “Mom?” she started, gently probing. Her mind ran over everything Carter had told her, her questions only forming more questions. What happened all those years ago? Does she have a sister? Why has it been kept a secret all these years?
“Did you and Dad ever try to have another kid? Storytime, Mama,” a smile graced her voice as she nudged the older woman towards the object of her curiosity. Maureen looked startled a moment, but she quickly overcame that as she looked down at her beloved daughter. A lot had happened to bring them to this moment, not that you would know if just at a glance. Her past had been filled with tragedy, making Kylan that much more precious to her and her husband, bless his souls.
A long moment passed before she started speaking. “A long time ago, your father and I had a little girl. Before you. We loved her very much, and would have done anything for her. She was our princess. It was before we came to live here, but she was kidnapped and we never saw her again.”
Kylan’s brow furrowed. “Kidnapped? Who would do such a thing?” More importantly, perhaps, why was this the first time she was hearing of it? Shouldn’t they have told her? Although, something bothered her about the situation that she couldn’t quite put her finger on. “I don’t understand, Mom. Why haven’t you ever said anything?”
Her mother looked almost ashamed at the question. Maureen knew that to explain would be to expose the darkest part of her history, and perhaps, even to put her precious daughter at risk. A part of her wondered if she would be able to protect her from what was coming. Anxiously, she cast her gaze over the fair, delicate features of Kylan. Sighing heavily, she nodded as if answering a silent voice. “You have to understand Ky, what I’m about to tell you, very few people know. In our pack, only the Alpha and Luna know about what happened before we came to join them. It was safer that way, for everyone involved, but after you were born,” her voice faltered, trailing off a moment before she continued, “well, after you were born, there was no secret more important.”
When she looked confused, her mother held up a hand for patience, taking a quiet moment to collect her thoughts before continuing. Kylan waited, lacing her fingers with the older woman’s for support. Earnestly, she examined the worry and the stress in her mother’s features, the subtle way she shifted as if afraid the ground beneath them were about to vanish. If only she knew what made her mother quake. Could whatever secret Maureen carried all these years really be as catastrophic as it seemed?
His office held several bookcases and one oversized desk. The room itself was sparse, as if no one could be bothered to decorate it. Her bright eyes took in everything as she came to stand before the Alpha’s desk, remaining standing until the man took his seat. Only then did she sit in the proffered seat. She felt small in this space, uncertain. Pulling out the letter, she passed it across the desk. Tilting her head, she watched his face. “I’m glad you got the letter. We weren’t sure what to do if you didn’t come. My Luna doesn’t have much time left and we are still hoping to save her before it’s too late. We believe you are meant to be here to ease her through this illness.” He seemed earnest enough, helping set the room at ease. Turning to look at the older woman behind her, Markus cut right to the chase, “And who are you?”“I’m her mother, Alpha Markus. Maureen Ashe.” The older woman swallowed, unsure of what to expect considering what she knew of losing her daughter.
It was barely light when they pulled out the drive. Carter was driving, letting Kylan rest in the back while her mother rode up front to keep him company. Two of his warriors took a second car, following them on the long drive to the Crescent River packlands. Their bags were loaded into the boot of both vehicles, making sure that they were prepared for whatever their journey afforded them. Kylan stared out the window as the woods faded into a gentle countryside, the steady sound of the tires rolling across the asphalt slowly lulling her to sleep. The first night, they spent at a tiny little bed and breakfast, quite quaint in the light of the sunrise. They were really lucky to be able to get three rooms at such short notice. It definitely didn’t hurt that they were still on the Blackwood lands; the owner of the building was honoured to have their next Alpha and his chosen mate choose to stay with them. The manager’s wife was a bubbly wolf, feeding them well and sharing stories
Coming to, she felt strong arms wrap firmly around her small frame. "Are you okay, Ky?" came the voice she knew better than her own. Nodding, she tried to sit up, but he wouldn't let her. "Not yet, you're still recovering." Recovering? Recovering from what? The last thing she remembered was her Shifting Ceremony and the hot feeling that had washed over her. A yawn escaped, as she snuggled close, rubbing her face against his chest. Why was she so tired? "You're okay, just fainted from shifting." Kylan turned a confused look his way and he reassured her, "Dad says it can happen sometimes. This is the first I've heard of it, but he says when there's something blocking it, or sometimes when someone is being gifted with a special power by the Goddess, they don't complete the shift the first time. He said you'll get another chance, but Ky, there's something you should know. The shift...it might have changed you."Wait, changed her? Changed her how? Pushing away from him, she
The moon hung heavy in the sky the evening of her eighteenth birthday. The air seemed to vibrate, as if it knew what was coming. Kylan was filled with excitement, having dreamed of this day her entire life. As a pup growing up, her parents' stories were about the magic of turning and how it would enhance her entire life. She couldn’t wait for the senses that would come with her first shift, the feeling of the ground beneath her paws. Scratch that — she couldn’t wait to meet her wolf. She smiled, humming in her head even if she couldn’t in reality. It was strange sometimes, having grown up without a voice to go with the thoughts in her head. When she was younger, she had to deal with the unfeeling taunts of children, passing down the hushed whispers of adults. She was lucky to have Carter and his family — it only took once for everyone to learn that Kylan was off limits to bullies. No one liked facing the truth, but bullies in a society like theirs were commonplace. If you wer
Maureen stared at the letter, contemplating what it meant. No way, this couldn’t be happening. Could it? All these years, they had believed their daughter dead, a casualty of the massacre that had decimated their pack. If this were to be believed, then her daughter wasn’t dead, but had been kidnapped and stolen away from everything she had known. The implications sent a tremor through her hand, giving away the distress she was feeling even though she tried to keep her voice calm. “Where did you get this?”She looked at her mother with a pointed look, clearly telling her that she knew where she got it. Turning it over, she showed her mother the seal, tapping her index against it twice for emphasis. There was no denying its source or that it was real. This was happening, as weird and unreal as it may feel. “But that means…well, that means she was kidnapped!”“Kidnapped?” she questioned, her head tilting as she considered what her mother was saying. Thinking over the story her
“Your father and I hadn’t been married long. He was the Alpha, of a long line of Alphas and I was his Luna. I still remember the day I found out he was my mate; everyone was really shocked. How could a girl raised by humans be mated to the Alpha?” At the look her daughter sent her way, she nodded, “That’s right. I was not always part of a pack. I was adopted as a baby by an amazing family and raised with all the love and care they had to offer. Of course, I wasn’t like them, but we didn’t know that until much later.” She explained how she came to be found at the edge of the woods, with no family or personal belongings to be found. Naturally, she had been raised as any human would have been, almost thriving in the human town she had come to call home. The only problem was - she wasn’t human.Being a wolf, she was different from those she grew up with, those she lived with, joked with, even loved. When her wolf started to show, at first, Maureen had thought she was going craz
