Chapter 2

작가: Yes to Tacos
Juliet's wild accusation actually made me laugh.

"Juliet, did repeating the year mess with your head? Why would I waste time stirring up your mess?"

She was momentarily speechless, then came back at me, all high and mighty, "Then post a statement, clear things up online! Say we broke up amicably a while ago.

"I chose to repeat the year, and it's got nothing to do with Brian! He's been dragged through the mud by everyone online, and he's been crying all day!"

Hearing her go all soft about Brian, my smile turned ice-cold.

"Why should I clear anything up? We were done because you cheated with another guy, and you're repeating the year for him, too.

"Juliet, I'm not obligated to clean up your mess or deal with the fallout from you and your childhood crush.

"As far as I'm concerned, we were over the second we split. I don't owe you anything."

"You–"

I did not let her finish. I hung up and blocked her number, no looking back.

A few days later, a post on Jameston University's campus forum shot to the top of the trending list.

[Exposing New Kid Samuel: The So-Called Golden Boy, Just a Spoiled Brat with Power!]

The post painted a picture of me as a rich kid with a serious control issue and a mind full of schemes.

It claimed I had been crushing on Juliet, the girl with brains and heart, since we were kids, and I used my family's clout to make her date me.

However, it was she and her childhood friend Brian who were the real deal, totally smitten with each other, until I came along and split them up like some heartless villain.

The post went on to say that after Juliet got into Jameston University, she tried to dump me and go back to Brian.

However, I played the drama card, threatening to end it all, and even said I would get the Lawson family to take down the Spencers if she left me, so she had no choice but to stick it out.

The kicker? The post said Juliet was not repeating her school year for love; she was 'trying to break free' from my evil grip, making a bold stand.

Then there were the photos, all doctored up.

One showed me giving Brian the evil eye, which everyone read as pure jealousy.

Another had Juliet looking all frustrated while talking to me, which everyone took as her just putting up with me.

Then there was the one with Brian looking all sad, with Juliet comforting him, hailed as the ultimate lovebirds.

Just like that, public opinion did a total 180.

People who had felt sorry for me and had been trashing Juliet and Brian just days before suddenly had a change of heart, turning their attacks on me.

[Whoa, so that's the real story! No wonder the genius girl seemed off; she was being pushed around!]

[Samuel is just gross! Do you think being rich makes you cool? Ever heard that forcing things won't make them good?]

[My heart went out to Brian and Juliet. It was like watching a modern-day tyrant picking on the little guy.]

[Samuel, get out of Jameston University! We don't need someone as toxic as you at our school!]

The messages were a stream of filth and insults that no one should ever have to read.

Before I knew it, my personal details, including my phone and dorm room number, were all over the Internet.

My phone was blowing up with hateful texts from strangers and persistent prank calls.

Some guy even showed up outside my dorm, yelling up at my window, "Samuel! You lowlife! Come out and face us!"

"Big shot bully! You've got no shame!"

My roommate was so mad he was about to storm down there and give them a piece of his mind, but I held him back.

"Don't bother; they're too worked up. You won't get through to them."

He was pacing around, desperate, "Samuel, what are we gonna do? How can they just throw insults at you without knowing the whole story?"

I watched the angry mob from my window, strangely calm, almost amused.

That had Brian's fingerprints all over it.

Juliet must have twisted our story into something ugly to give him ammo against me.

They thought they could smear my name with their dirty tricks and come out looking like angels.

They could not be more wrong.

When Max found out we were an item, he let out an ear-piercing whoop over the phone."Yesss! Our ship has sailed! I just knew it! I knew Yvette had a crush on you!"I could not help but laugh, listening to his excited chatter on the phone, a warm, fizzy feeling bubbling up inside me."Hey," Max suddenly whispered, his voice dripping with curiosity, "do you know what ever happened to Juliet?"I paused, fishing out the fuzzy memory of that name from the back of my mind."No clue, I haven't kept up with her.""Dude, she's totally washed up!" said Max, barely containing his glee."Our high school pals told me Juliet's grades tanked when she repeated the year. Rumor has it her second shot at the entrance exams was so bad that she couldn't even make the cut for community college."Max summed it up with a chuckle. "What goes around comes around, right? She had it coming!"I just listened, feeling nothing but calm. All those people and things that used to get under my skin, that I on

The next time I saw Juliet was at the airport. She was there with her bags, waiting at the check-in counter like she had been there forever."Samuel, I was wrong, so very wrong..."She was a mess, crying in front of me."I was so blind, such an idiot! I shouldn't have trusted him, shouldn't have left you. Can you forgive me, please?"Let's start over. I'll do right by you! I'll redo a year, make it back into Jameston University!"I just looked at her, feeling nothing but total revulsion."Juliet, you and Brian are just perfect for each other. One's a fool, and the other's bad news. A match made in disaster."With that, I grabbed my suitcase and headed for the VIP lane."Did I just miss the scandal of the year?"A cool voice floated from behind.I turned, and there was Yvette. She was trailing a silver suitcase just like mine, standing a short distance behind me.I flashed her a grin. "Talk about serendipity, Yvette.""Definitely serendipitous." She strolled over, falling

I gave Yvette a grateful nod. "Thanks, Yvette," I murmured. She looked at me, her eyes softening behind her glasses. "Don't mention it."She hesitated, then added, "Just remember, boys need to look out for themselves, too."I grinned. "Got it."Later that night, I got two texts. One was from Max, who was fuming on my behalf in Messenger, ranting about Juliet and Brian. After a long tirade, he threw in a curveball.[Hey, does Yvette like you or what?]The question made my cheeks warm up for no good reason. Before I could even think of an answer, another text popped up.It was from Yvette.[Are you home safe?]I was staring at my phone when memories from high school started to play in my mind like a highlight reel.Yvette was the undisputed queen of the honor roll, cool and stunning. She was a dream girl for a whole bunch of guys at school. All I could recall was how she kept to herself, barely speaking unless it was about schoolwork. We hardly ever crossed paths. However

Max snorted beside me, muttering under his breath, "Check it out. When the going gets tough, the tough get going."Dinner was a bland affair. As soon as Max and I stepped out of the karaoke place, Juliet was on us."Samuel, are you happy now?" she burst out, anger simmering in her voice.I could not help the smirk spreading. "Happy about what?""Cut the act!" she snapped, stepping right up to me. "Brian got two years. Is that what you wanted?"I lifted my drink and sipped it lightly. "He got what was coming to him."She flared up suddenly. "He's just too innocent! It's all my fault he got dragged into this mess! If it weren't for me, he wouldn't have done any of it! Why can't you just forgive him?"Watching her refuse to see the truth, I could not help but laugh."Juliet, you still think he's innocent after all this?""What else?" Juliet gave a bitter laugh. "He threw away his good name for me, even went as far as to post online. If that's not being innocent, then what is?"

My dad did not miss a beat."Alright."Juliet looked like she had been hit by a bolt from the blue, completely stiff. She stared at me, her lips quivering. "What are you talking about? Cooperation? What cooperation?""Ever wonder why your dad's company has been landing all those big deals for years?"I gave a sarcastic smile, my gaze sharp with disdain. "Juliet, you've been living it up on the Lawson family's dime, and now you stab me in the back? All I'm doing is reclaiming what's mine."She lost it, lunging for my phone, but I sidestepped smoothly."Really, Samuel?! Over something so small? Do you have to go for the jugular?""Yes." I locked eyes with her, her fear clear as day, and I did not mince my words."I can hold a grudge."You and Brian, I'm not letting either of you off the hook!"It was not long after my call that Juliet's dad, Andrew Spencer, and mom, Enola Cobb, got the news about the factory's funding being cut and its impending bankruptcy. They came running.

  • The Name That Lit Her Screen   Chapter 4

"Mr. Cunningham, let's not waste any more time. Sue Brian," I declared, each word deliberate and clear for all to hear.Juliet caught on fast. "What do you mean? You're suing Brian?""Samuel, do we really need to escalate this?" she asked.Beside her, Brian's eyes welled up, tears spilling over in an instant. "Juliet, what do we do? Is Samuel mad at me? I didn't do anything wrong, did I?""You're innocent, Brian. You're just too nice; that's why you get picked on. Don't worry, I'm here for you."'Yeah, right. So touching,' I thought sarcastically.Juliet shoved Brian aside and stormed up to me, her face a mask of fury. "Samuel! What are you trying to pull? Why sue Brian? He's just a clueless kid!"She grabbed my wrist with surprising strength.I frowned and jerked my arm away from her grip."He doesn't get it, you say? Juliet, are you trying to play me for a fool, or are you just mocking the law?""It wasn't on purpose! He just loves me too much!""That's enough." I cut her
