Chapter 1

I was named Carl Teigen, and I streamed games for a living.

Every day, apart from gaming, I slept. Oh, wait. Strike that. Now, as soon as the clock struck midnight, I started peeping on my neighbor, Megan Steele.

…

Time ticked by, yet not a single crack of a whip or any suggestive sounds came from next door.

I began to feel restless, my eyes drifting toward the clock every now and then.

All of a sudden, my patron, Ethan Truman, berated me through my headset. "What the hell? You're peeping on someone else's wife? What's wrong with you?"

I snapped back to reality and stared at the only word on my monitor. "DEFEAT."

I ran my hand through my hair in annoyance. "Damn it."

When he invited me to play again, I logged off and issued him a refund in one smooth motion.

Was she working the night shift tonight? Why else wasn't she home yet?

After a moment's hesitation, I took the painting off the wall and peered through to the other side.

Megan was lying on the bed in a purple silk nightgown. Her fair hands roamed all over a man's body. Her long hair swayed up and down, brushing against the man's thighs.

No wonder it was so quiet. She'd taken the gentle approach tonight.

I swallowed dryly, and the restlessness in my heart vanished. I settled into a comfortable position to enjoy this lovely scene.

However, this time, I felt none of the excitement I usually did. If anything, a bitter ache rose in my chest, along with the ridiculous urge to pull her into my arms and keep her hidden there.

I scoffed, shook my head, and hung the painting back up.

I tossed and turned all night, unable to get her out of my mind. Megan was cold and aloof, yet there was something inexplicably alluring about her.

As soon as that thought crossed my mind, a wave of heat stirred beneath me. I pulled back the covers and looked at the dampness between my thighs.

I couldn't help but mock myself. "Megan's a doctor, and she has a boyfriend, Carl. What right do you have to entertain these filthy fantasies? You—"

The very next second, a loud thud cut me off.

Megan's aggrieved voice reached my ears. "Vincent Hawke, you're such an asshole! We've been together for years, and I've been supporting you while you were unemployed. Yet now, you want to break up with me?

"What the hell have you been doing all this time? I swear, if a man proposes to me right now, I'd say yes without the slightest hesitation! Who the hell do you think you are…"

Megan and Vincent had moved in three months ago. The couple had been inseparable, and their moans had echoed throughout the entire floor. This was the first time I'd heard them argue.

Vincent didn't argue back. He slammed the door behind him and stormed out.

My heart raced as I hurried over to take a look. Megan curled up on the floor, looking utterly dejected, muttering to herself, "I won't go back to you ever again, Vincent! I'm going to find a man who has a house, a car, and money in the bank and marry him. From now on, you'll just be a stranger in my life."

With that, she closed her eyes in despair. I wondered if the two of them had fallen out.

I could barely contain my excitement. After years of working as a gaming companion, I might not have much, but I had plenty of money and my own place. That'd definitely meet her standards.

After wrestling with my thoughts for a while, I decided to confess my feelings to her first thing tomorrow morning. I washed up and drifted off to sleep, fantasizing about buying her a car.

…

Long before my alarm went off, I was already standing in front of the mirror, rehearsing my lines. Yet, I couldn't seem to find the right groove.

The moment I heard a knock at the door, I panicked and grabbed a bag of trash from the floor before opening it. The creaks startled Megan, and she stopped in her tracks.

When she turned around to look at me, my breath hitched. Megan was far more beautiful up close than she had ever looked through that tiny hole. Her skin was also much fairer than it had seemed in the dim light.

Just then, a gentle breeze swept past, carrying the intoxicating scent of roses to my nose. I felt myself harden.

I lowered my head and hurriedly used the trash bag to shield myself from her view. Unfortunately, I was a second too late.

Megan chuckled. "Get yourself a girlfriend, or you're going to end up with weak kidneys and hypersensitivity."

Her voice was melodious. If only I could have her writhing beneath me…

Hold on. What did she just say? Had I been caught?

The words I wanted to confess stuck in my throat, and I couldn't bring myself to say them.

At that moment, her cool fingertips brushed across my palm, and a note settled in my hand.

By the time I looked up, Megan was already gone.

I hurried back into my apartment and unfolded the note. "What's the fun in peeping? Come over tonight."

Megan had caught on.

The sharp sting in my hand snapped me back to reality, and I realized I had crumpled the note into a ball. I hastily smoothed it out and brought it to my nose before taking a gentle sniff.

It carried a faint scent of roses. It was identical to the scent on her body.

I made up my mind then and there. Tonight, I was going to confess my feelings to Megan.

The second time I drifted off, I vaguely heard Megan's conversation with Vincent. The topic was my house.I had initially thought I was only dreaming until I learned that Vincent was still alive. Then, I realized that the conversation in my dream had actually been real. Hence, when I was brought back, I told the police everything that had happened in the last few days. The cops didn't dismiss my claims simply because the evidence was one-sided. After looking into it, they discovered that Megan had gotten into stock trading six months ago—she not only lost her house but also ended up over two million dollars in debt.'Vincent had helped her pay off 500 grand, but he could no longer come up with the rest. Consequently, the two of them decided to set up a honey trap to extort more money. When I heard that, I couldn't help but make a bold guess. While searching online for potential targets, the two of them came across the dating profile video I had posted and added me to their lis

"I didn't! I genuinely love Meg! Don't believe him, Meg. You and Callista are different in my heart. She was my puppy love, whereas you're my true love," Vincent hurriedly explained after shooting daggers at me.I jeered. "Is that so? Would someone who truly loved you send you onto my bed just to get revenge for his first love?" Perhaps the two of them had some feelings for each other, but it definitely didn't run deep. Under my instigation, the two of them actually began squabbling right in front of me. Unwilling to watch them tear each other apart, I popped the question that had been bothering me. "So, you orchestrated this whole charade and lured me into your trap just to get revenge on me?" "Yes..." Megan was about to admit it when Vincent seized her arm. He glanced at the door and shook his head at her. Megan gritted her teeth and fell silent. I crossed my arms over my chest and gazed at them. I was in no rush to learn the truth. As time trickled by, my silence began to

As Megan explained what had happened, my mind rewound to three years ago. It was Valentine's Day. I'd happened to take on a job from a wealthy client who had just gone through a breakup. The commission was higher than usual this time—ten grand. Combined with my savings, I had just enough to buy the designer bag Callista had been eyeing for months but could never bring herself to spend money on. Callista had wanted me to celebrate the occasion with her, but I explained that I would make it up to her the next day. Callista was furious. She picked up the keyboard I'd just bought and hurled it on the floor, demanding to know whether she or the game mattered more to me. I told her both of them were equally important to me.Yet, she raised a baton, pointing it straight at my monitor. "Either you spend the night with me, or we're over! If you don't make a decision, I'll smash your computer so we never have this argument again." I thought she was being unreasonable. I pulled out my

"I didn't do any of that!" I protested, only for a police officer to toss my clothes at me. "We've already gotten the full story. Get dressed and come to the station with us." At that moment, I only just realized the severity of the situation. I looked at Megan hopefully. "Megan, hurry up and tell the cops that we're dating, and we had sex consensually!" I hurriedly closed the distance between us. Yet, she fled, her body trembling uncontrollably. With teary eyes, she looked at the female officer. "That's not true. My toilet and drain were clogged, so I knocked on his door and asked him to help me unclog them. However, he dragged me into his apartment and threatened me into having sex with him. After I managed to break free and escape, he followed me back to my apartment and held me captive…"I understood every single word that came out of her mouth, yet when they came together, I was dumbstruck. Megan was the one who knocked on my door; she was the one who invited me into her

"I'm shutting you up so you don't disturb our neighbors in the middle of the night," Megan said.Initially, I didn't understand what she meant until she walked out the door. I tried to call out her name, only to realize I couldn't make a sound. That was when panic surged through me. What was the meaning of this? How had I lost my voice? Why had she locked me inside her house? I kicked one of the pillows off the bed with all my strength, attempting to stop Megan in her tracks. However, she merely looked at me and scoffed. "Enjoy these three days of despair." At that moment, I wished I had never heard those words. I closed my eyes, racking my brain over what I'd done wrong to make Megan get back at me in such a twisted manner.Yet, no matter how long I thought about it, I still couldn't come up with a single clue. In the end, I had no choice but to give up. I figured I'd tough it out for three days and demand an explanation from her. Unfortunately, I'd underestimated my body'

At Megan's insistence, I stayed. I lay on my side all night, worried that one wrong move might bring her to tears. However, this arrangement was pure torture.Ever since my girlfriend, Callista Eden, and I broke up three years ago, this was the first time I had shared a bed with a woman. The moment I thought of her, the heat inside me instantly died out.I turned to look at Megan. Would she get tired of me and break up with me because all I do is game and sleep, and I barely have any time to spend with her? I had no idea if Callista had found someone new or if that was genuinely what she thought. Yet, that was indeed the reason she broke up with me before running away from home. I tried to find her. Yet, every single time I called, no one answered. In the end, her number was taken out of service. Realizing she no longer wanted anything to do with me, I forced myself to suppress how much I missed her. In the blink of an eye, I kept my longing buried for three long years. Tru
