The word went through the circle like a wind.

“Twins,” I said.

“Twins,” June said. “Maeve says it is twins and she says they are going to come in the spring.”

I sat down on the flat stone.

“June,” I said. “You are nineteen years old.”

“I am nineteen years old and I am going to have twins in the spring and I am not the first wolf in this territory to have a baby at nineteen and I am not going to be the last.” She put her chin out. “And I am not going to be the sister of the Alpha who gets sent to her room.”

I put my arms around her.

“You are not going to be sent to your room,” I said. “You are going to be the aunt of my child and the mother of twins and the whole of the line is going to be in this territory by the end of the month and the whole of it is going to be in the pack house.”

June held on.

And then Ilse came and put her hand on June’s shoulder.

“Girl,” she said. “When are they due?”

“Maeve says the spring,” June said.

“And the father?”

June was quiet.

“He went east in July,” she said. “And I have not heard from him.”

Ilse stood in the circle with her hand on June’s shoulder.

“Then there is a thing I have to tell you,” she said. “And it is not a thing I want to tell you and it is not a thing I am going to make easy.”

I stood up.

“What thing?” I said.

Ilse looked at me.

“The curse is in the ground,” she said. “And the ground gives it back to the keeper and the keeper holds it with the Luna. And the whole of it is a choice the line makes.” She put her hand on June’s shoulder. “But there is a thing about the line that nobody has told you. The ground does not give the curse back to the keeper of the territory. It gives it back to the keeper of the blood.”

I looked at her.

“The blood,” I said.

“The blood,” Ilse said. “The curse goes to the fourth daughter’s line and the fourth daughter’s line is you and June and the children of the both of you. And the whole of it is going to come back to the line whether there is a keeper or not.” She put her hand on June’s shoulder. “And the first of the line to carry it is not going to be your child, Alpha. It is going to be hers.”

The circle was silent.

June stood very still.

“What?” she said.

“The curse is going to come back to the line,” Ilse said. “And it is going to come back to the first child of the line who is born after the full moon. And you are going to have twins in the spring and your sister is going to have a child in the spring.” She looked at June. “And the first of the line to carry it is going to be one of your twins.”

June put her hand on her stomach.

“No,” she said.

“I am sorry,” Ilse said.

“No.” June stepped back. “You are not going to stand in this circle and tell me that one of my children is going to carry a curse. You are not going to stand in this circle and tell me that the whole of it is going to come back before it is even gone.”

I went to her.

“June,” I said.

“Do not,” she said. “Do not tell me it is going to be all right. Do not tell me the line is going to hold it together and the keeper is going to take it and the whole of it is going to be fine.” She put her hand on her stomach. “I have been carrying these children for two months and I have not told anybody and I have been standing in squares and running through fields and the whole of it has been about the curse and the circle and the Council. And now you are telling me that one of them is going to be the next cursed wolf.”

I put my hands on her face.

“I am telling you that one of them is going to be the next keeper,” I said. “And the keeper is not a cursed wolf any more. The keeper is the wolf who holds the circle and takes what the ground gives and the whole of the line holds it with him.” I looked at her. “And the whole of the line is going to be in this territory and the whole of it is going to be in this pack and the whole of it is going to be in this pack house and there is going to be a keeper in every generation and there is going to be a Luna in every generation and the whole of it is going to be held.”

June looked at me.

“You do not know that,” she said.

“I do not know that,” I said. “But I know that the old Alpha made a bargain in 1897 and the whole of it went on for eighty-five years and nobody in the line knew what they were. And I know that my mother knew and she held it alone for twenty-two years and she died with the whole of it in her hands.” I put my hand on her stomach. “And I am not going to let that happen to your children. I am not going to let them carry it alone and I am not going to let them grow up in the dark.”

June stood in the circle.

And then she said, “What do we do?”

“We find out what the ground is going to give,” I said. “And we find out when. And we find out which of your children is going to carry it and we tell them before they are old enough to be afraid.” I looked at Ilse. “And there is a thing I am going to ask you and I am going to ask it in front of the whole of the circle.”

“Ask it,” Ilse said.

“You have been carrying the whole of it since 1891 and you have been in the trees and you have been hiding and you have not told a soul.” I put my hand on her arm. “And I am not going to be the Luna who hides. I am not going to be the Alpha who keeps the secret. So I am going to ask you to stay. I am going to ask you to stay in this territory and live in this pack house and tell the whole of the line every single thing you know about the ground and the curse and the whole of it.”

Ilse looked at me for a long moment.

“I have been alone for eighty-eight years,” she said.

“You are not alone now,” I said.

She put her hand on my face.

“Then I will stay,” she said.

And then a wolf came into the circle.

It was the Alpha of the Alphas and he had a paper in his hand and his face was gray.

“Alpha,” he said. “There is a thing I have to tell you and I am not going to make it easy.” He held out the paper. “The Council has opened the room in Boise. The room with the eleven cursed wolves in it.”

I stood up.

“And?” I said.

“And there are not eleven,” the Alpha of the Alphas said. “There are twelve. And the twelfth one has been in that room since 1954 and she is not a wolf of the north and she is not a wolf of the Council.” He looked at me. “She is a Halloran.”

I took the paper.

“Who?” I said.

“Her name is Ruth,” the Alpha of the Alphas said. “And she is your mother’s sister.”
