Chapter 1 – The Prophecy

(Alora’s POV)

Love.

People say love conquers all. I used to believe that too. I believed love was enough to survive lies, power, and fear. I believed that if two people truly loved each other, nothing in this world could separate them.

I was wrong.

Sometimes, love isn’t enough.

Sometimes, the people who swear to protect you become the ones who break you.

And sometimes…

The greatest betrayal doesn’t come from your enemies.

It comes from the person you trusted with your heart.

That was exactly what happened to me that night.

“I am pregnant.”

I stood in the middle of Killan’s study with trembling hands, watching the man I loved stare at me. His eyes widened, but he remained silent.

For a second, I thought he hadn’t heard me because his reaction wasn’t what I had been expecting.

We had been expecting an heir ever since we got married years ago. When I first met Killan, I was the healer’s blind daughter. I had been blind from birth, but the first day I opened my eyes was the day I felt the mate bond.

I remember that day like it was yesterday.

My mother always left me at the inn. I had spent my entire life there.

That day, she had stepped out for a while.

Killan was at our front door, waiting for the healer to treat his wounds. Since she wasn’t home, I had to do it myself.

Even though my eyes couldn’t see, I used my other senses as my healing strength.

I touched him, and I felt it immediately. The pull was so strong. He didn’t let go of my hands, and in that moment, I opened my eyes.

There he was.

Killan’s face was the first i ever saw.

Many called it a miracle, but the elders said it was confirmation that we were bound to each other.

Since that moment, we had been inseparable.

“Killan… I am pregnant,” I repeated, making sure he had heard me earlier.

Only then did he grab my hands and move closer to me.

“What… did you just say?”

A smile slowly spread across my lips.

“I said…” I laughed softly, wiping away the tears already gathering in my eyes. “We’re going to have a baby.”

“My Goddess…”

His hands cupped my face before he pulled me into his arms.

“You’ve made me the happiest man alive! We are going to have a baby!”

His heartbeat echoed against my ear as he held me tightly.

“I can’t believe this.”

Neither could I.

For months, we had prayed for this child. Now our prayers had finally been answered.

He suddenly pulled away, dropping to his knees in front of me.

“Killan…”

He gently rested his hand on my stomach.

“Our little pup.”

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“I promise I’ll protect you.”

Tears rolled down my cheeks.

“You have always protected me.”

He looked up at me. I could already see the tears forming in his eyes. I slowly wiped them away.

He stood up again and kissed my forehead.

“We’ll announce the pregnancy at tonight’s council meeting.”

“I don’t think I can wait that long.”

“You have to. I’ll be back immediately after the meeting, and we’ll have a feast. Do you like that?”

He asked, and I nodded.

He placed another kiss on my forehead.

“You’ll be such an amazing mother.”

“And you’ll be the best father.”

I believed him.

I believed every single word.

If only I had known those promises would die before the moon rose.

“I have to tell Mother.”

I hurried toward the door.

“I’ll meet you after the council meeting.”

With those words, we parted ways. I headed outside towards my mother’s inn, and every servant I passed smiled at me. I wanted to scream the news to the entire world.

I was going to be a mother.

As I walked toward the Luna’s wing, voices echoed through the corridor. I had mistakenly taken the wrong path, leading to the council chamber.

The meeting had already begun.

I was about to continue walking when I heard Killan’s voice.

“ …Alora is pregnant.”

I froze, immediately covering my face as excitement rushed over me.

Curious to see their reactions, I stepped closer. The chamber doors were slightly open.

“The prophecy cannot be ignored! Now that she is pregnant, it’s better we act fast,” one of the elders said.

My smile faded.

What prophecy?

“The first child born to Alpha Damon must be killed before the child opens his eyes.”

My heart immediately dropped.

A cold sensation washed over my body, followed by unbearable heat.

I had never heard of this.

Killan had never mentioned any prophecy to me.

Then another elder spoke.

“If the prophecy is true, that child will bring ruin upon every pack.”

“Nonsense! We all know this pack has been waiting for a child to be born into the Alpha’s home, and now that we are finally going to have one, you want to kill the Luna’s baby?” someone argued.

“It has happened before.”

“The Moon Goddess never lies.”

“We cannot take that risk.”

I frowned.

I patiently waited for Killan to speak.

To order the guards to throw every single one of them into the dungeon for suggesting that our baby be killed.

But I heard nothing from him.

My grip tightened against my chest.

“Our Luna is carrying the child now,” another elder said.

“We must decide before it is too late.”

I leaned closer.

My fingers tightened around the wall.

“The child must die the moment it is born.”

“No.”

The word escaped my lips before I could stop it.

I pushed the door open and barged inside.

“I will not let any of you touch my baby!”

I screamed, pointing at them, completely disregarding the law that a Luna was not supposed to be present during a council meeting with the Alpha and his elders.

“Alora…”

Killan stepped down from his seat and hurried toward me.

“How can you remain quiet while they plan to kill our baby in your presence? How can you remain silent, Killan? Why are you not stopping them?”

I yelled, shaking his shoulders as he grabbed me, trying to calm me down.

“The Luna should not be here!” one of the elders said.

I turned to him.

“How could you even be okay with such cruelty? All of you are evil!”

I screamed as Killan carried me outside.

“This meeting is dismissed!”

He announced before shutting the doors behind him.

He carried me back to our room while I kicked him and cried out in pain.

“Alora, please calm down… please.”

He helped me sit on the bed, but I immediately tried to stand again.

He gently held me down.

“Killan… please tell me it’s not true. Please… I beg you.”

“You know I love you… but you also know we have to make sacrifices as Alpha and Luna.”

“Don’t say it…”

I covered my ears.

“If sacrificing one baby will save us from the calamities that will fall upon us, then we have to do it. It’s so hard for me to say this, but… you cannot have this baby.”

“You promised me! That baby is our first child! What if we can’t have another? I will not let you do it!”

I pushed him away.

“I know… and I am so sorry.”

“You said you would protect me… that you would protect our child.”

“I know… and we also swore to protect our people.”

I burst into fresh tears.

“The prophecy isn’t just a story. It is real…” he muttered.

“I do not care!”

“You should.”

“I don’t!”

My voice echoed through the room.

“This is our baby!”

He ran both hands through his hair.

“You think this is easy for me?”

Tears rolled down my cheeks.

“Yes, it is! You just agreed to murder your own child without talking to me first!”

His jaw tightened.

“We can have more children.”

The words hit harder than any slap.

I stared at him.

“What did you just say?”

“We’re young, Alora. We’ll have another child.”

Another?

Another?

As if this baby could simply be replaced.

“You expect me to sacrifice this child because we can make another one?”

“I’m thinking about the entire pack.”

“I’m thinking about our baby!” I countered.

He closed his eyes.

“As Luna, you have to think beyond yourself.”

I laughed through my tears.

“So that’s what this is?”

“Alora—”

“No.”

I stepped away from him and placed both hands over my stomach.

My baby.

Our baby.

The tiny life growing inside me had done nothing wrong.

Yet they had already sentenced my child to death.

I looked at the man I loved.

The man I thought would stand beside me no matter what.

He couldn’t even look me in the eyes.

“I would rather die,” I whispered, “than let anyone touch my child.”

“Alora, please…”

“Tell me the truth, Killan.”

He slowly looked at me.

“If you had to choose…”

I swallowed the lump in my throat.

“Our child… or that prophecy…”

My voice broke.

“Which one would you save?”

He remained silent….that was the answer I needed

I slowly backed toward the door.

“You’ve made your choice.”

I rested one hand protectively over my stomach.

“And now… I have to make mine.”

I pushed the door open and started to walk away.

“Alora… Alora!”

He called after me, but I didn’t listen.

I just kept walking.

Unknown to him, that was the last time he would ever set eyes on me…

Or our son.
