The Elevator

The suppressants failed in the middle of the hallway.

Heat surged under my skin without warning, sharp and unmistakable. My steps faltered for half a second before I forced them steady again. I did not look back. I already knew Cassian had noticed. His scent pressed closer from behind—winter, steel, and that darker note that made the base of my throat tighten.

Students moved around us in ordinary clusters, still laughing, still comparing schedules. None of them knew what had just broken open inside my body. I kept my head down and my pace even, the sealed letter pressed hard against my side. Every instinct told me to get distance, find a bathroom, re-dose, disappear. The university was full of cameras and open spaces. There was nowhere clean to run.

Cassian’s voice reached me without effort.

“You are leaking.”

I did not answer. I turned at the next junction, choosing the narrower service corridor that led toward the older elevators. Fewer students used this route. The air was cooler here, less crowded with competing scents. My pulse still hammered once, hard, before I locked it down again.

Footsteps followed. Not Cassian’s measured ones.

Heavier. Faster.

A hand closed around my upper arm from the side and pulled me sideways into an open elevator before I could react. The doors slid shut with a soft mechanical sound. The sudden enclosure cut off the hallway noise and most of the outside scents.

Darius Kane stood in front of the control panel.

I knew his face the same way I knew Cassian’s—from public records and the kind of quiet warnings that circulated among scholarship students who paid attention. Billionaire heir. Publicly polished. Privately something much sharper. Black hair, dark eyes, expensive watch, open-collar shirt that did not quite hide the edge of a scar along his collarbone. He was taller than Cassian and carried his power differently—less ice, more direct force.

His scent hit me immediately. Darker than Cassian’s. Smoke, cedar, and something metallic underneath. It clashed hard with the winter-steel still clinging to my clothes from the corridor. The combination made the heat under my skin spike again.

I pulled my arm free.

“Let me out,” I said.

Darius did not move toward the doors. He pressed a button and the elevator began to rise without a listed floor destination. Private override. Of course.

“You are in no condition to walk through a public hall,” he said. His voice was lower than Cassian’s, rougher around the edges. “Cassian already saw the shift. Half the security team will have reported it by now.”

“I can handle it.”

“No,” he said. “You cannot.”

I backed up until my shoulders touched the mirrored wall. The letter remained closed in my fist. Darius’s gaze dropped to it once, then returned to my face. He did not ask to see it. He already seemed to know what it contained.

“You are Leo Ashford,” he said. Not a question.

“I applied under a different name.”

“That name is finished.” He took one step closer. The elevator was not large. The smoke-and-cedar scent thickened. “The Grand Master filed a formal interest petition this morning. Your real name is on the first page. Cassian was sent to confirm presence. I was sent to make sure you did not disappear before the claiming window opened.”

The words landed with the same quiet precision as the aide’s earlier message. Sundown. Claiming window. Interest petition. Every piece clicked into a shape I did not want to see.

“I did not consent to any of that,” I said.

Darius’s mouth curved, not quite a smile. “Consent is not the current currency.”

He reached for my wrist. I moved it back. He was faster. His fingers closed around my left wrist—not hard enough to bruise, but firm enough that I could not pull free without a real fight. The elevator continued its smooth upward climb. No one else would be calling this car.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Preventing the next problem,” he answered.

He brought my wrist up, turned it, and pressed the inside of his own wrist against mine for three full seconds. Heat flared at the contact point—deliberate, controlled, and unmistakably a temporary claim mark. His scent sank into my skin like a brand that would fade in days but announce itself to every trained nose until then.

I jerked my arm back the moment he released it. The mark already felt warm.

“That was not permission,” I said. My voice stayed level only through force of will.

“It was protection,” Darius replied. “Cassian’s claim bite is still theoretical. Mine is temporary but real. Until the formal window closes, you are marked as under my protection. It will keep the lower-level scavengers from trying anything stupid in the halls.”

“I do not need your protection.”

“You needed it the moment your suppressants failed in front of the Crown Prince.” He glanced at the glowing floor indicator. “We are going to a private medical floor. You will re-dose under observation. Then we will discuss how much longer you think you can keep refusing the obvious.”

The elevator slowed. My pulse had not settled. The clash of the two Alpha scents—Cassian’s still clinging to me, Darius’s now sealed into my wrist—made the heat under my skin feel sharper, harder to ignore. I kept my breathing even and my shoulders square. Control was the only thing I still owned.

Darius watched me with dark, unreadable eyes.

“You can hate this,” he said quietly. “You can fight it. But you will not walk out of this building unmarked again.”

The doors opened onto a silent, carpeted hallway with no student traffic and no windows. Darius stepped out first and waited, making it clear the choice of following was only an illusion.

I looked down at the temporary mark on my wrist. Smoke and cedar. Protection that felt exactly like ownership.

The letter in my other hand suddenly felt lighter than the new scent under my skin.

I stepped out of the elevator.

The Claiming WindowI left the lecture hall with the letter still sealed and the three sets of documents burned into my memory.Identical crests. My real name in clean black type. A formal interest petition already stamped with the Grand Master’s authority. And the quiet certainty that one of the three Alphas in that room had lied to my face. The restricted corridor felt longer on the way out. Darius walked slightly ahead, Cassian slightly behind, Elias carrying the folder under one arm like it weighed nothing. None of them spoke. The temporary mark on my wrist still carried Darius’s smoke-and-cedar scent. Cassian’s winter-steel clung to my clothes from the earlier corridor. Elias’s colder rain-and-ink note lingered in the air between us. Three layers of possession I had not agreed to.I wanted the nearest exit. I wanted a bathroom with a lock, a fresh dose of suppressants, and enough distance to think. The scholarship packet no longer mattered. The university no longer felt like a p

The Lecture HallThe elevator doors opened onto a silent, carpeted hallway with no student traffic and no windows.Darius stepped out first and waited. The temporary mark on my wrist still felt warm, smoke and cedar sunk into the skin like a brand I had not agreed to. I stepped out after him because the alternative was remaining in the closed elevator with his scent thick in the air and nowhere to go.He did not lead me toward a medical bay.He turned left instead, down a restricted corridor that required a keycard scan. The lights here were dimmer, the walls lined with dark wood panels that absorbed sound. My boots made almost no noise on the thick carpet. The letter remained closed in my right hand. The crest on the wax seal pressed against my palm with every step.“You said medical floor,” I said.“I said private,” Darius answered without looking back. “Medical can wait. Information cannot.”We stopped in front of a pair of heavy double doors marked as Lecture Hall 4-C. The panel b

The CorridorI was still holding the letter when the door opened again. Not the aide. Someone else. The new footsteps were lighter, measured, and completely unhurried. I did not turn immediately. I kept my eyes on the dark wax crest pressed into the envelope and forced my breathing to stay even. The cold understanding from the aide’s final words had not left. Sundown. The Grand Master expected an answer by sundown.“You should not be in here,” a voice said behind me.Low. Controlled. The kind of voice that never needed to raise itself to be obeyed.I turned slowly.Cassian Voss stood in the doorway.I knew his face from the university orientation materials and the occasional news clip that played in public halls. Crown Prince. Heir to the empire. Blond hair cut with precise severity, ice-blue eyes that looked permanently unimpressed, black clothing tailored so perfectly it almost disappeared against the shadows of the corridor behind him. He was taller than the aide and carried the sa

The CrestI kept my head down and walked straight toward the scholarship desk. The administration hall smelled of polished wood, old paper, and the kind of expensive cologne that clung to people who never worried about money. Students moved around me in loose clusters, laughing too loudly, comparing class schedules, already claiming space like they belonged here. I didn’t. I only needed the packet, the room key, and a quiet exit before anyone looked too closely. My scholarship forms listed a different last name. A safer one. I had practiced the signature until it looked natural. I had checked the suppressant dose twice that morning. Everything was supposed to be ordinary.I was three steps from the counter when a man in a black suit stepped into my path.“Leo Ashford,” he said.My real name. Not the one on the forms.I stopped. The noise of the hall dropped away under the sudden quiet in my ears. My fingers curled once at my side and then went still. I did not look around to see if an
