The heavy oak doors of Kael's private study slammed shut, locking out the noise of the Great Hall.

"You aren't walking away from this, Elira," Kael said, stripping off his heavy leather battle gauntlets and tossing them onto his desk. "We need to align our story before the elder council reconvenes at dawn."

I stood near the hearth, keeping my hands resting over the folds of my dress.

Being trapped in this narrow space with him forced the mate bond to pulse — a heavy, electric tug pulling at my chest. I suppressed it, forcing my spine straight.

"There is no story to align," I said, my voice cutting through the quiet room. "You publicly humiliated your wedded wife to appease a woman who uses your dead brother's name as armor."

Kael's jaw tightened. "I made a political decision to keep this pack from fracturing. Ethan's officers were ready to challenge my succession tonight. By elevating Vera, I secured their loyalty and protected his unborn child. Why can't you see the logic in that?"

"Because you didn't just elevate her, Kael." I stepped toward him until less than two feet separated us. "You gave her my seat. You told the elders that an omega lacks the strength to lead, validating every slur they have thrown at me for three years."

"You are an omega, Elira!" His voice rose. "You don't carry an Alpha aura. You cannot intimidate rival territory lords or command war parties."

"I managed this entire estate for two years while you were buried in northern mud." I looked straight into his eyes, unflinching. "I balanced the winter grain reserves. I negotiated trade terms with the mountain clans without losing a single wagon. I kept the elders from turning on your Beta. Do not speak to me of strength, Alpha. I did your job, and I did it without needing an Alpha aura to hide behind."

Kael blinked, caught off guard by the precision of my answer.

For three years he had treated me as a quiet, compliant fixture of his house. He hadn't realized I knew every ledger, every border treaty, every vulnerability in his pack.

His expression softened. He reached out, his thick, calloused fingers brushing against the side of my neck, over my pulse point.

"I know what you did for the keep," Kael murmured, voice dropping low and rough. "I haven't forgotten it. But politics is dirty. I need Vera in that seat for optics. In private... you're still the only woman who holds my mark."

A wave of raw vulnerability hit me. My breath hitched.

For a second, the old part of me — the part that had spent three years praying for his return, the part carrying his child in my womb right now — wanted to lean into his chest and tell him everything.

Then I smelled it.

Faint lavender oil, on the cuff of his tunic.

I pulled back, breaking his touch before it could finish undoing me.

"If I'm the only woman who holds your mark," I whispered, "why does Vera carry your personal signet ring?"

Kael froze. The warmth in his eyes died, replaced by sharp, guarded wariness.

"What are you talking about?"

"The gold signet ring." I advanced on him, refusing to let the question soften. "The one etched with the three stars of your personal bloodline. Ethan wore the Alpha crest. Why did Vera have “yours” before you ever marched north?"

Kael looked away toward the hearth, his hands clenching into fists.

"It isn't what you think."

"Then tell me what it is."

Before he could answer, sharp pounding rattled the study door.

"Kael! Please!" Vera's voice sobbed from the corridor. "The elders — they're arguing over the succession decrees — I feel faint —"

Kael's focus shattered instantly.

The question of the ring got tossed aside like it never mattered, the way everything about me always seemed to when her voice entered a room.

He unlocked the door and stepped into the hallway, where Vera stood clutching a silk handkerchief.

"Go back to your quarters, Elira," Kael ordered over his shoulder, taking Vera's arm without looking back at me. "We'll finish this later."

I didn't go to my quarters.

I turned toward the lower stairwell instead, pulling my cloak tight, heading straight for Dr. Hana's infirmary. My medical records needed to be locked away before Vera realized exactly what I was carrying — before tonight's humiliation became tomorrow's target.

As I reached the top of the steep stone stairs, Vera lingered behind Kael, stepping into the shadows near the landing.

The weeping act vanished.

She lifted her hand, letting the heavy gold signet ring swing from its silver chain, catching the dim torchlight.

"He will never give you the answer, Elira," Vera sneered softly, stepping closer to the wet stone ledge. "Because deep down, you already know who he chose first."

Before I could reply, Vera's face contorted into wild panic.

She grabbed my left forearm, slammed her own back against the cold stone wall, and let out a piercing, hysterical shriek that echoed down the rafters.

"Kael! Help me! She's pushing me!"

Vera threw her full weight backward into the dark stairwell, her fingers digging into my sleeve — dragging me over the ledge with her, into the drop below.

The ringing of steel on steel echoed across the stone arches of Ashveil's high training courtyard.Dawn had barely broken over the frosted peaks, but cold sweat was already trickling down my spine. I gripped the hilt of a lightweight broadsword, my boots sliding slightly on the polished granite flags as I absorbed a light strike from Dorian's practice blade.Clang."Lower your center, Princess," Dorian said softly, circling me like a massive, patient wolf. He held his longsword with one hand, his posture relaxed, his golden eyes observing every breath I took. "If an Alpha lunges at you with full force, you don't block his momentum head-on. You redirect it."I wiped the hair from my eyes, my lungs burning. My body was still recovering from the miscarriage — the physical ache was a quiet, dull thrum in my lower abdomen — but I refused to put down the sword."Again," I gasped out.Dorian didn't move. He lowered his blade, resting the tip against the stone floor. "You've been at this for

The Great Hall of Silver Hollow smelled of stale ale and dying embers. For three days, the feast banners celebrating Vera's elevation had hung from the rafters, but no one was drinking anymore. The music had died the moment news arrived from the border that Alpha Kael had been found kneeling in the mud, screaming as the mate bond shattered inside his chest. Servants had taken to whispering in doorways instead of walking the halls openly, the way people do in a house where something has gone quietly, irreversibly wrong.Inside the Alpha study, documents were piled high on the mahogany desk — unbalanced trade ledgers, angry demand notes from the mountain clans, and unverified supply requisitions. Without Elira's sharp eye, the administrative machinery of the pack had ground to a sudden, screeching halt. No one had thought to ask, in all the months of taking her competence for granted, what would happen to Silver Hollow the day she stopped holding it together.Kael sat behind the desk, a

The silence in the royal wing was thick, broken only by the crackle of pine logs in the hearth.Roran's private sanctuary sat at the highest point of the palace, overlooking the white stone city below. Servants had placed a tray of spiced tea, warm bread, and roasted meats on the low carved table, but none of us had touched it. Outside the tall windows, the last of the afternoon light was turning the terraced rooftops the color of amber, and somewhere far below, a bell tolled the hour with a low, resonant chime that felt entirely unlike the harsh iron gongs of Silver Hollow."Selene exceeds her bounds," Roran said, pacing near the floor-to-ceiling windows, his silver eyes dark with irritation. "She treats this court as her personal drawing room because her father controls the southern grain trade.""She is an annoyance, Roran, not a threat," I said, leaning back against the high fur-lined chair. I had changed into a simple gown of deep sapphire wool — soft, warm, and free of any restr

The journey from the Ironwatch Outpost to the Ashveil Capital took three days through the snow-capped passes of the Dragontooth Mountains. With every mile, the air grew warmer, carried by the geothermal springs that fed the heart of the kingdom. My body, sustained by Dr. Hana's iron-root tonic and the fur-lined comforts of Dorian's heavy mantle, slowly began to reclaim its strength. The physical ache in my core dulled to a low murmur, though the silent void left by my lost child remained an unyielding weight beneath my ribs — the kind of weight that didn't lessen with distance, only settled deeper the longer I carried it. Dorian Vask rode beside me every step of the way.He didn't pepper me with empty condolences or ask about the life I had left behind in Silver Hollow. Instead, he pointed out tactical landmarks — the hidden archer nests along the granite cliffs, the supply depots carved into the rock, the old territorial border lines that predated the pack wars. He spoke to me not a

The air in Ashveil smelled different. It lacked the damp, stagnant scent of Silver Hollow's pine swamps, replaced by the crisp, sharp bite of mountain frost and cedar. Even the light was different here — thinner, colder, cut through with a silver clarity that made every pine needle on the ridge look edged in glass.I rode between King Roran and Warlord Dorian Vask as our war party crested the ridge. Behind us, down in the muddy border basin, Kael was a tiny, motionless black speck standing beside his horse. He hadn't moved since we crossed. Some distant part of me — the part that had spent three years learning the shape of his silence — knew he would stand there until we vanished from sight, and maybe longer. The severed mate bond still throbbed in my chest, a raw, phantom ache where a cable had been ripped from my soul. But the cold relief was stronger. For the first time in years, the air didn't feel like it belonged to someone else."We rest at the northern outpost in two miles," R

  • The Omega They called Barren   CHAPTER 5: THE BORDER AND THE REJOINING

Rain had turned the northern road into a river of dark mud.I rode hard, pushing my horse through the thick timberline of the neutral valley separating Silver Hollow from the Ashveil Kingdom. Every stride sent a dull, throbbing ache through my core, but I refused to pull the reins.Behind me lay three years of humiliation, a dead child, and a mate whose voice I never wanted to hear again. The thunder of heavy hooves boomed through the trees behind me."Elira! Stop!"I didn't turn around, but the electric pull in my blood reacted before my mind did.Kael was closing the distance, his black warhorse churning through the slush. He wasn't wearing his formal tunic anymore — just a thin shirt, riding trousers, and the wild, frantic look of a man who had suddenly realized he was bleeding out from an invisible wound."Elira, pull up!" he roared, his voice cracking against the wind.I hauled back on the reins as I reached the massive grey boundary stones marking the border. My horse skidded to
