Ezra

It’s all I can do to not lose my fucking shit and tear this fucking packhouse down to the ground. I want to burn it all. I want to see this awful place destroyed.

Through our bond, I could see everything that Margot suffered. I needed to be inside the space he kept her, needed to feel just how tight those confines were so I could better understand her fear of enclosed spaces.

And now I do and all I want is to have Joshua alive again so I can kill him slowly and painfully for what he did to my mate.

I don’t want to leave her alone, especially not in that room of horrors, so I toss the mattress over the banister and let it drop three stories while I go back into the bedroom and grab the box spring. I do the same with it, grabbing the bedding on the way and tossing all of it over the banister before coming back to pull Margot in my arms.

She hasn’t moved a muscle, as if she’s unable make her body leave this place where she suffered so much.

“Is there anything else we need to see on this floor?” I ask, wrapping my arms more tightly around her when she leans into me. Her body is shivering and I know it's from fear, more than cold.

“We should check the other rooms, just to be thorough,” she says against my chest.

“Do you want to stay here, or do you want to come with me?” I ask her, giving her a choice since she obviously never had one in this environment before.

“I want to stay with you,” she says.

“Okay.”

I tuck her under my arm, keeping my arm wrapped tightly around her as we walk down the hall. As quickly as I can, I check the other rooms, making sure no critters and no squatters have taken over while the packhouse was vacant.

When we’ve cleared the floor, I close the door to Alpha’s bedroom as we pass, and we make our way back downstairs.

“Do you want to sleep inside tonight?” I ask her.

“No! No, please. I can’t sleep here.”

“Hey,” I say, taking her face in my hands. “That’s why I asked. It’s your choice. If you want to sleep outside, we will. If you want to sleep in the car, we will. You have control, Margot. You get to decide. Whatever you want, that’s what we’ll do. Okay?”

Her eyes are haunted and I fucking hate it. It’s the look that Diana had at the end. Back then, I didn’t recognize it for what it was. I didn’t realize it was a disconnect, a separation from whatever it is that keeps us moving forward in this life.

“Margot?” I growl, shaking her a bit.

Finally, she nods. “Okay. I’m in charge. I want to sleep outside. I’m cold, Ezra.”

“Then let's get that fucking bed burning and we’ll have one hell of a bonfire to warm you up, my mate,” I say.

She nods.

“Is there anything else we need to burn, Margot? Anything else that holds horrible memories for you here?”

She turns and looks around. “No. It was all in that room.”

“Okay. Why don’t you go to the car and get the food we brought for tonight. I threw some sleeping bags in the back as well, just in case. I’ll get the fire going while you do that, okay?” I ask her.

She nods. I’m not sure she realizes that she’s clinging to my shirt, holding on to me as if she’s afraid to let go. When she doesn’t move away, I continue to hold her, letting her take whatever time she needs to get control of her emotions and feel strong again.

Finally, I feel her body begin to relax and she releases her grip on my shirt.

I lean down and gently press my lips to hers.

“I love you. I’m here for you. You’re not alone. You’re not weak. You’re in charge. You’re in control here, Margot,” I say, making sure to keep eye contact with her so I know she hears me.

She nods and, this time, she steps away. “I’ll go get the food.”

I watch her as she walks out of the packhouse. She’s a bit unsteady on her feet, but as she steps outside, she pushes her shoulders back, forcing herself to regain her composure as she pulls on the inner strength she still can’t acknowledge that she has.

As soon as she’s outside, I grab the bedding and begin dragging it outside. I already planned to burn the bed. I’d seen what Joshua had done to her through her nightmares, so I knew I wasn’t going to leave any semblance of the place where he raped my mate. But the room was different. In her nightmares, there’s only darkness. I couldn’t see the room, or the space. That’s because there was no space and no windows, only the darkness that terrifies her.

I keep my senses tuned to her while I stack the bedding and the mattresses along with some dry wood that I collect around the packhouse. There’s plenty of it. The place hasn’t been maintained in a very long time. Whoever wins this pack will have their work cut out for them. But honestly, the ones who win don’t care. I know when Jake, my previous Beta, won his pack, he told me it was worth every bit of manual labor he and Letti put into it to make it theirs. According to him, it actually made it feel more like his own pack and the pack members felt the same. So maybe it’s a good thing that these packs need so much work. It gives a new pack a sense of camaraderie and belonging to make their home their own.

When I get back with the wood, Margot is laying out the food for us. She’s already pulled out the sleeping bags, and I see that she’s also pulled out the lighter fluid I brought, in case we needed it to light the fire. However, I don’t think we’re going to need it. Cloth burns pretty easily.

“Margot,” I call quietly. The sun has set and the night is just starting to settle in. Staring the fire now will give us some light for the rest of the evening.

When she looks up at me, I beckon her over. “Why don’t you do the honors. It should be you burning away the memories of your past.”

I hand her the matches and step back, giving her space to decide what she wants to do.

She looks around and picks up a small stick, one that is dry and will make a great starter for the fire. She lights it, watching it burn, then steps up to the wood and bedding that I have stacked up.

She squats down, putting the lit wood underneath the box spring. It lights quickly and she moves the lighter to the bedding which also begins burning pretty quickly. When she gets the mattress burning as well, the fire already starting to blaze brightly, she steps back, looking at her handiwork.

“Fuck you, Joshua!” she growls.

I move behind her, wrapping an arm around her waist. She leans against me and together we watch the remnants of her past go up in flames.

OliviaI didn’t expect to fall asleep so quickly in Dr. Olander’s arms. But he’s such a kind and gentle man that I felt safe and cared for.It was different than it is with Reese. Reese feels like another son to me, whereas, Dr. Olander feels … Well, I’m not really sure what he feels like. I just know the feelings that I have for him are not familial. I like being around him and surprisingly, I liked being his arms. His soft scent of orange, grapefruit, and vetiver calmed me. Without consciously realizing it, I’d curled against him, tucking my face against his neck. Thankfully, he didn’t seem to mind. I’m not sure how long he held me, but I didn’t wake up for hours. It was the best night’s sleep I’ve had in a very long time. When I go downstairs, I find Dr. Olander in the dining room talking to Reese.“Hey, Olivia, how are you? How did you sleep?” Reese asks, coming over and kissing me on the cheek. Goddess, this man is so sweet. I’m so glad he’s mated to my daughter. She definitely de

HunterI’m lost in my mate’s scent, the way I always get lost in her scent when I’m kissing her. She came into my office to ask me something with our newborn in her arms. I could smell the milk on my third pup, my second daughter, when they walked in. I love smelling my mate on my pups almost as much as I love smelling me on my mate. She laid Neith in the crib in my office and had come over to ask me something, but I pulled her into my lap and began kissing her, wanting to show her how much I love her.She responded instantly, just like she always does. Then she’d wrapped her arms around my neck and leaned against me as her orchid scent began to fill this space around us along with the sound of her sweet whimpers.I’ve just slid my hand up under her shirt, when Remington’s voice pushes through the Alpha link.‘We have eyes on Koden.’I pull away and look at my mate.“Damn it!” I growl, making her smile.‘Where?’ Amelia asks instantly in the link. She’s obviously the most concerned abou

  • The One He Saved   Chapter 44: Split Duties

JocelynI’m starting to realize how difficult it is to split my time between The Watch Tower and Remington and my pack and Amelia. The longer Remington and I are together, the more I want to be with him. But I’m the Beta of my pack and I can’t let Amelia down, especially since she’s still dealing with her mate being in a coma. However, today I’m headed back to The Watch Tower. It’s been a couple of days and there’s a lot going on around our packs, especially in the southern packs. In my conversations with Remington, I’ve realized that he’s not sleeping very much, worried that he and the warriors in the pack might miss something.‘Jocelyn,’ his voice purrs in my head sending shivers through my body. We may not have completed our bond, but at moments like this, I’m reminded that it’s still alive and well. These feelings that I have for Remington will only get stronger, becoming more intense if or when I get to a point where I’m ready to accept him as my mate.I look up and see him standi

  • The One He Saved   Chapter 43: Reunion

DanteAfter checking with Reese and Jake to make sure they didn’t need help disposing of the four scouts, I introduced myself to Dr. Samuel.“I am Alpha Dante. I am one of the twelve Alphas in the allied packs that are providing sanctuary to those who need protection. I am also Eve’s fated mate,” I tell him.He sucks in a breath. “But Alpha Corey …”“She rejected him and whether or not he accepted the rejection, both of our wolves recognize the mate bond. My understanding is that Corey wasn’t her fated mate.”“No, he chose Eve because of her beauty,” he says, making Ranael growl possessively.Dr. Samuel raises his hands in supplication. “Those were his words, not mine. Although, you’d have to be blind not to notice that your mate is beautiful, both inside and outside,” he says, making Ranael settle. After saying goodbye to Kayce, Robin, and Miles, Ezra and I returned to my packhouse with Dr. Samuel.‘You know you’re going to have to share him, right?’ Miles asks in the Alpha link.I ch

EveI stare dazedly at Dante while my father and Luna June step into his office. He grins a crooked grin, making him look even more sexy than usual, before winking at me and turning to my father.“Ready to accept me as your Alpha, Edward?”“I’m sorry if we interrupted something,” my father says.I shake my head, trying to clear it.‘Tell our father to hurry. I want to kiss our mate again. He’s a good kisser,’ Eilie says, purring before I can stop her. I cut the sound off, but not quickly enough. Dante grins at me, leaning in to peck another kiss on my lips before turning to my father.“Eve was just surprised at the difference in me and this pack compared to Corey and his,” he says to my father as he gets a cup. I notice he’s not going to have my father lick his hand like I did.“There really is no comparison, is there, Luna Eve?” Luna June asks.“No, Luna, there isn’t. It’s … I don’t have words to describe what it is.”I watch as my father accepts Dante as his Alpha, then drinks his bl

  • The One He Saved   Chapter 41: Eve's Surprise

EdwardI’m not sure how I feel about being asked to lead warrior training. Alpha Corey never let anyone other than him and Beta Roland run warrior training. Perhaps there is a reason for that. I hadn’t realized that their fighting style was so different than other packs' styles.Of course, all of that had flown out of my head when I saw June waiting for me. She had a soft smile on her face, and then she’d laughed. I’m not a eunuch and I’m not immune to the charms of a woman, but since the death of my mate nearly two decades ago, I just haven’t felt any interest in being with another woman. Until now. From the moment Quill called June our mate, it’s like my body suddenly remembered that I find women attractive. Or, more specifically, I find this woman attractive, extremely attractive, utterly and amazingly attractive.“You’re staring again,” she says softly.“I can’t help it. You are utterly breathtaking when you laugh,” I say, not caring if I sound ridiculous.Thankfully, June isn’t th
