~ A M E L I A ~
I was still in a small state of shock that the school allowed me to attend this late in the academic year; having exceeding grades in most of my classes helped. Plus, I mentioned to them that I was at a human school but that I am a pure-blood werewolf, so perhaps they felt inclined to have me be in a school with my own kind.
Truthfully, I should have been thankful that they didn’t ask too many questions.
After a failed introduction with the head teacher, who was frantically organising paperwork he had mistakenly dropped and mixed with another set of paperwork, I took a folder full of documents I required from the receptionist and scurried away to find my locker.
Once found, I opened my locker shoved my bag inside and pulled out a sheet of paper from the folder with my class schedule on it to see what I had first.
Health - 9am to 10am.
A compulsory subject, so I was told, which felt quite odd given I was in Year 13, my final year of school. Surely we’d learnt all we needed to about health and sex education by now.
Pulling out my notebook and a pen, I then made my way down the hallway, and suddenly I felt eyes on me. Not just from one person either, but from multiple.
Don’t look up. My mind echoed. Keep walking.
Eyes locked onto my schedule, I kept moving forward.
Was it truly that fascinating to have someone new move to the village? Was it really that rare?
‘Ah! You’re the transfer student, yes?’ A woman approached me in a beautifully tailored beige suit. She looked so youthful but must’ve been a teacher here.
‘Hi,’ I smiled, ‘Yes, I’m Amelia.’
The teacher nodded and spoke with a firm voice, ‘Yes, yes, I know. We don’t ever get new students here, so you stood out immediately to me. I am Miss Gallager. We were informed to expect your arrival today. How are you settling?’
My head scanned the surrounding walls, ‘It’s a little overwhelming, but I’ll adjust. I’m a fast learner.’
‘That’s good to hear. I hope you’re a good student and not a troublemaker,’ Miss Gallager gave me a stern glare.
My face relaxed into a mild jaw drop, ‘Oh no, no! I’m no trouble, I can promise you that. I just want to finish my studies and learn the ways of the wolf.’
‘That’s good to hear,’ she checked her watch, ‘I best be off, good luck!’
Thanking her as she walked off, I glanced towards where I felt those eyes were on me and saw a group of people chatting away with each other. None of them were watching me now.
My gaze gravitated towards the tallest with short dark hair. He had his back facing towards me, but the colour of his hair reminded me so much of the guy I had met earlier—Everett.
Brushing it off, I continued walking down the hall to find the room for my upcoming class.
~ ~ ~
Stepping inside the classroom, there were a few students already seated. I walked over to the teacher and handed them a note about my transfer, then they directed me to a seat for me based on their already organised seating plan.
Taking my seat, and placing my notebook and pen in front of me, I rested my chin on my fist whilst staring at the clock. The class should begin soon, and whoever was sitting next to me hadn’t arrived yet.
I grabbed hold of my amulet with my free hand and rubbed my thumb over the stone, hoping that would trigger some luck for myself. However, I knew it wasn’t an amulet of luck, it was an amulet of protection. As my birth father mentioned in a mini-letter hidden in the box containing the amulet.
Taking a moment, I recollected a passage from the letter…
------------------------------
Little Wolf,
That’s what we used to call you, so we didn’t accidentally expose your name before the naming ceremony - little wolf.
There’s an adventurer inside of you. It’s inside all of us werewolves. It’s what makes us so well-connected to nature. That’s why we are so curious, and that’s why I know that you’ll go looking for answers despite any wishes against it.
With all the information I’ve supplied, albeit it’s not a lot, I know it’s just enough for you to find your way to the village and our pack. I know you’ll make your way there as soon as possible to get answers.
So, with that, I’ve asked for help from a good friend of mine. Someone who helped save you as a baby. A witch.
This necklace was created to aid your journey of becoming a wolf - it’ll help balance your strength and emotions to help you not lose control, only to an extent. Don’t rely on this to do all the work for you. You need to learn to control it yourself. There’s also an enchantment cast on the necklace to protect you from psychic magic; restricting enemies from accessing your mind, so your secrets, thoughts and control of your mind are safe from potential enemy witches.
Unfortunately, it cannot protect you from everything. Physical attacks will still harm you, so be cautious. We wolves have a handful of weaknesses, some are stronger than others.
This necklace is for you and you alone. Part of the enchantment means that no one can take this off you. If anyone attempts to do so, the amulet will retaliate. As long as you are wearing it, your mind will be protected.
This is the only way I know I can protect you because I still don’t know who can be trusted within the pack. So my word of advice: don’t trust anyone.
Most of all, promise me you’ll NEVER take off the amulet.
------------------------------
I promise. I promised to find out the truth about what happened to him, and my birth mother; the truth about what happened to harm our family and break us apart. I’d heal the wounds of my heart I never knew were even there.
Allowing my determination to subside, I couldn’t help but think about the nickname he gave me in that letter.
Little wolf…
Such a simple nickname prickled my heart, making me feel warmth and comfort, almost like I’d felt that exact feeling before. My brain created a false voice for my birth father to echo the name in my ears over and over.
My mind was so fixated on recollecting E’s letter that I didn’t even realise that my classmate had arrived beside me.
‘Hi there!’ A chirpy voice exclaimed, ‘Are you new here?’
My attention went to the chirpy-voiced girl. I smiled, ‘Yeah I am. I’m Amelia,’ I held out my hand.
‘Samantha Wilk,’ she shook my hand, grinning, ‘but please, call me Sammy.’ She took a seat next to me and pulled out her notebook and a pencil case, ‘So what are you?’
I tilted my head and choked out a laugh, ‘Pardon?’
She laughed, ‘Sorry, I meant like are you a werewolf or a witch, or something else?’
‘Oh, I’m a werewolf.’
‘Eeee!’ She squealed, ‘We never get new people in the village, specifically werewolves. Maybe occasionally a witch, but, honestly, even that’s rare. How crazy is that?’
My smile became awkward, ‘Yeah, crazy is an understatement.’
Sammy gave me a confused frown, ‘What?’
‘Nothing,’ I said, shaking my head, smiling.
My nervousness continued as I tapped my pen against the table, over and over.
‘Are you OK?’
I nodded, taking a deep breath, ‘Just nervous, is all. I’m the new kid in a school for supernatural beings. It’s a lot to take in.’
Sammy placed a hand on my shoulder, ‘Don’t worry, everyone in the pack is really friendly, plus you’re gorgeous, so all the guys will love you! Well, all the ones who aren’t mated yet. Are you mated? Have you turned into a wolf yet? How old are you?’
‘Woah! Relax,’ I laughed, ‘Is it really that exciting having someone new here?’
‘Sorry, I’m going overboard with questions. Like I said, we never get any new people moving here. We’re a closed community in a way, so everyone knows everyone,’ she waved her hands in front of her, ‘oh but don’t worry, everyone will be super welcoming.’
Welcoming… that Everett guy didn’t seem so welcoming. He was so invasive and rude for no reason.
‘Alright class, settle down, let’s get started,’ the teacher gathered the room’s attention.
Sammy smiled once more at me and swivelled herself forward to face the front of the classroom.A warming sensation bloomed in my stomach. I smiled and faced the front too, prepared for whatever we were about to learn in this Health lesson.
~ A M E L I A ~Never again.I didn’t want to endure what I witnessed ever again in that class. That’s how intense transforming into a werewolf is.And I thought the video of a woman giving birth that my old school made us watch was bad.Gripping my notebook against my chest, making my way down the hallway to my next class. I was speechless. How was I going to handle that when the time came?‘That was traumatising.’The voice jolted me, I looked to my side, ‘Oh, Sammy,’ I forced a chuckle, ‘Yeah, not what I was expecting on my first day.’Sammy laughed nervously, scratching her neck, ‘I’m not looking forward to experiencing that.’
~ A M E L I A ~Flopping my body on my bed, I released a massive sigh, ‘What a day,’ I said to my ceiling. My phone thunders a vibration. Rolling over to lay on my stomach, I answered the video call request, ‘Hi Mum!’‘Darling! How was your first day?’ Mum smiled. Her eyes were slightly red, it looked like she’d been crying.I let out an exaggerated sigh, ‘It was intense, but a good start I think! Have you been crying again?’‘No!’ She responded almost instantly, pulling out a tissue and dabbing the inner corners of her eyes.Rolling my eyes, I laughed, ‘Mum, please, I’ll be coming back once I find out the truth about my birth parents and learn how to control my wolf abilities better. I’ve already learnt so much about being a wolf in one day—maybe more than I want to know—but it’s still more than before!’Mum sighed, ‘I know, sweetie, but I just wish your dad and I could’ve come there with you, but with his work and mine—‘‘I know, Mum, it’s OK. You raised me to be independent and tau
~ A M E L I A ~A short and somewhat clement gasp escaped Sammy’s mouth. Eyes wide at first, then suddenly blinking over and over again as the arrow stands still right in front of her face. Whatever alcohol she has consumed, in combination with her shock, has numbed her enough to be motionless. My breathing was heavy, but overflowing with relief. My eyes locked onto my fist, clenched around the shaft of the arrow, astounded at my own reflexes kicking in so fast, despite my mind running so slowly.I knew the transition to becoming a werewolf was to gain enhanced abilities, but I didn’t expect it to be to this extent. I’ve been severely underestimating everything so far. How much stronger could I possibly become? ‘Holy fuck…’ Sammy uttered in an exhalation, so quietly that if it wasn’t for my heightened hearing, I surely wouldn’t
~ A M E L I A ~‘That was amazing!’ Sammy said, still breathless, but her cheerful tone had returned, as she rushed over to me, ‘Please tell me that wasn’t your first time shooting an arrow?’‘Thankfully not,’ I said, breaking a smile, ‘I was one of the best archers in my hometown.’A scoff came from Everett’s direction. I darted another scowl at him. What a jackass.Turning back to Sammy, ‘Are you OK? I’m so sorry I put you through that, I didn’t mean to—’‘It’s fine, Amelia! I’m fine!’ She held my shoulders, ‘The fact that you stood up for me when you just met me, really means a lot,’ she hugged me.As she pulled back from the hug, I glanced down at the bow, amazed that I w
~ E V E R E T T ~‘What is wrong with you?’ Gabriel yelled at me, following behind me as I continued walking away from the girl with the amber eyes.Groaning, I didn’t even bother looking at him, ‘Leave me alone, Gabe,’ I said, chugging the rest of my beer before grabbing another bottle.‘Amelia didn’t deserve that, she didn’t know any better—‘‘Amelia?’ I turned to face him, annoyed, ‘You know her name? So you lied to me when I picked you up from school today. You said you didn’t speak to her.’Gabriel hesitated for a moment but then huffed, ‘Okay, fine, I spoke to her very briefly, but all I know is her name.’I pulled Gabriel to the side of the food and drinks table, where less people are, handed him a beer and
~ A M E L I A ~As the weekend finally approached, I was elated with the opportunity to not only explore the village more but also find the best places to learn more about the Silver Moon pack, and hopefully, eventually, my parents too.Walking through the village, I couldn’t help but admire how beautifully built it was, with smooth cobblestone paths weaving through to guide you from building to building. The homes themselves were so classic looking, with thatched roofs and exposed timber frames, it almost felt as if they were pulled straight out from the Tudor times. It was a refreshing sight to see.Even with the village glacially adapting to an urban environment, the natural environment was one with the village too. The whole village was surrounded and encapsulated by trees, and there were even random trees locat
~ E V E R E T T ~‘Who was that, sweetheart?’ My mother asked as I approached her.Rolling my eyes, I shook my head, ‘Nobody important.’‘I’ve not seen her around before, is she that new wolf everyone is talking about?’ She peered over, staring at her inquisitively.Running my fingers through my hair, I huffed, ‘Like I said, she’s nobody important.’ I looked back to see Amelia wandering around the village, her eyes glistened as she gazed upon her surroundings. Those innocent-looking eyes are hiding a dark secret, I just know it.As I turned back around, Mum raised a brow at me and shook her head, ‘You need to stay focused, now more than ever, Everett,’ she clasped her hands together and kept them low, h
~ A M E L I A ~It’s warm. No, it’s hot. Scalding.Fire.There’s a fire.Oh god, not again…My eyes fluttered open and, as they came to focus, my entire surroundings were engulfed in flames. Don’t panic. Do not panic.I couldn’t move. I can never move. The flames were inching closer and closer. The heat of the flames stung my skin, though not yet touching me. A deafening scream plunged my eardrums. No. Screams. Many others were screaming. What is happening? As the flames came closer to my skin, my body felt like it was ready to shut down, even though all I wanted to do was fight, but I was helpless, motionless. Suddenly, a shadow-like figure appeared in the distance. It appeared to scan the entire room, before setting its gaze towards me. I couldn’t determine whether it was a man or a woman; was it human? At that instant, it rushed towards me and my heart sank into my stomach. The surrounding screams continued…~ ~ ~ PHREEEEEEEET!Jolting up and gasping for air, I sat up and res
~ A M E L I A ~Smiling, I parted ways with my mate and walked towards the group. They all instantly fell silent as they laid eyes on me, uttering different words and bowing to me. ‘Hello,’ I smiled at the girl I desired to speak to, ‘you’re Suki, right?’Wide-eyed, Suki struggled to speak at first until the man next to her nudged her arm gently, ‘Y-Yes!’ She bowed, ‘It’s a pleasure to meet you, Alpha Amaris.’ Coming to a stand, and gesturing towards the man and spoke speedily, ‘This is my father, Machiavelli Twyla, Beta wolf of the Moonstone pack.’He bowed his head, ‘A pleasure to meet you, Alpha Amaris.’I tittered, ‘I’m still not used to that.’ Looking down at her drink, I noticed it was empty. ‘Come, let’s get you a refill. I could do with a drink myself.’ I looped my arm with hers and guided her towards the bar. She exhaled and whispered, ‘Thank you, it was almost suffocating being there,’ she picked up another flute of champagne and sipped it. I watched her, almost feeling c
~ A M E L I A ~A large smile grew on his face, ‘I love you too,’ he said before kissing me with even more passion. Everett traced his lips against my cheek, planting a kiss as he moved closer towards my neck once again. My breathing stuttered with every move of his. He planted another kiss on my neck before gently dragging his teeth against my flesh, taunting me and making me crave him more.‘Ev… stop… teasing,’ I said, struggling to breathe as I spoke. He chuckled against my skin, ‘I can’t help it, darling, it’s just too much fun.’ He sighed and lifted himself to meet my gaze again, ‘I promise you, I will mark you, but just not today. Today is your Ascension Ceremony; it’s an important and memorable day for you. Completing our bond should be a separate thing, what do you think?’I smiled, intertwining my fingers behind his neck, ‘I think that is a great idea.’ Ev looked pleased and pecked my lips. ‘Besides,’ I added, ‘you probably should meet my adoptive parents before we complete
~ A M E L I A ~With the curse finally being lifted, the people of the Silver Moon pack celebrated for three days straight, immediately after the Battle for Alpha ended, and I was deemed the new leader, the youngest Alpha leader ever in the entire history of the pack, claiming that title from my birth father. I thought and hoped he would’ve been proud that it was me who took that title. Truthfully, I’d expected more backlash for my rise from being essentially rankless to then becoming Alpha, but it seemed that the people of Silver Moon had the utmost respect for my birth parents, as well as gaining respect for me for saving them from the dreaded 18-year curse. The people of the pack were able to enjoy the freedom of having their powers back. I, however, had no chance to embrace my powers or even try shifting yet. There was too much to do, and I had no time to rest, not yet.Moving arrangements for one—I was now the Alpha, and moving back home with my adoptive parents was no longer a
~ A M E L I A ~I looked at the guards, ‘Please ensure Draven doesn’t try anything stupid.’With that, I sped through the forest, not realising how tame my wolf speed was before gaining access to my full power. It was a level I could not even fathom to explain. Magical? Fantastic? Out of this world? Yes, all of the above. My nose locked in on her scent swiftly, it was as if I could physically see her just through her scent. She was running back towards the pack, but she wasn’t going to make it. All of my senses were locked on her. I could smell the fear in her sweat and hear the panic in her panting breath. I slowed my pace and moved around enough to make her struggle to decipher where exactly I was coming from, only making her panic more as I moved in closer, finally being able to see her with my eyes. She came to a halt suddenly, frantically searching around, and when she went to move off again, I was there, standing right in front of her. ‘Going somewhere, Yurena?’ I stepped fo
~ A M E L I A ~ His voice was as clear as day in my mind, yet part of me felt like it was all a dream. Yet it wasn’t a dream. It was real, but it was about to turn into a nightmare when my attention was brought to Draven and the dagger in his hand as he pulled back, ready to plunge it into his son’s heart. With more speed than I had ever been able to harness before, I flashed towards them, leaping onto Draven’s back and swinging myself to the side to throw him off and send him skidding away. ‘Everett, Everett!’ I said in a panic, dragging my hands across his chest to check for any wounds. He groaned as he sat up, ‘I’m okay, I’m okay… just weak from the wolfsbane.’ He placed his hand over the stab wound in his stomach to stop it from bleeding, and with his free hand, he placed it on my cheek, looking deep into my eyes, ‘Amelia.’ With tear-stained eyes, I smiled and placed my hand on top of his, ‘Everett.’‘How dare you!’ Draven hissed as he came to a stand and walked slowly back t
~ A M E L I A ~‘No!’ I groaned and shoved my heels in the dirt before I hauled myself down towards the ground, using his weight to bring him down too. As he was above me, I used my legs to throw him to my side before bolting away from the cliff. By this point, I had used too much of my wolf speed and was struggling to lock into it fully. I needed full access to my wolf side. Draven sped after me, though he was also worn out; he still had full access to his power, which gave him that advantage. He hurtled himself at me, tackling me to stumble and fall into the bushes. A twist and crack of my ankle made me wail out in pain. I couldn’t see my friends, but I knew they were on edge watching the scene before them. Hudson and Everett both were likely fighting every urge within them not to get involved. They knew if they did, the challenge would become void, and I would lose instantly. They believed in me enough to fight this on my own. I’ve got this. I can do this!Pinning me down, Drav
~ A M E L I A ~Within those first few seconds, I knew that his fighting tactics differed from Everett’s—where he would wait for his opponent to come for him to then take them down, Draven was a head-on type of fighter. That only made him more unpredictable for me and lowered any advantage I could have even more. Focus. My mind hissed. Locking in on the situation before me, I stood still and waited for the right moment. Draven clenched his hands into fists. Watching closely, I spotted his right hand draw back ever so slightly. That was my mark. I waited for him to get closer and closer, to make a move. As he pushed with his left foot and lunged closer as he drew his right fist back, it was time for me to dodge and counter. I leant back as his fist moved for my face, grabbing his wrist and arm, pushing his punch away from me to miss my head. Using that momentum, I twirled around and skidded back, dropping to my hands and knees. Not having time to think things further, I pushed fo
~ A M E L I A ~All my friends tried to keep me busy and distracted during the day. We played board games, watched movies, and even had a picnic in the forest. However, I was struggling to eat and ended up watching the sun move in the sky, teasing me with what was to come. There was no more avoiding the inevitable.‘I’ll be right back,’ I said quietly, pushing myself to my feet and making my way back into my cottage. I’d become so comfortable with this home, and the chances were, win or lose, I’d not be returning to this home.I poured myself a cold glass of water and took a couple of sips before tipping the rest down the sink. Resting my hands on the kitchen counter, I tried to hash out a strategy to help me with the upcoming battle, but everything I thought of always resulted in the same thing: me losing.Draven was an Alpha werewolf, and before then, he was a powerful Beta. He had always been strong, and though I had strength, they were too limited. There was no hope.‘Hey,’ Sammy
~ A M E L I A ~To nobody’s surprise, I couldn’t sleep at all.It got to the point where I had to start pretending that I was sleeping just to stop everyone from shouting at me to rest in preparation for the battle, so I could gather my strength. We had all stuck together in the living room, moving the coffee table and the sofas to allow more space for us all to sleep on the floor. The guys brought the mattress from my bedroom and the guest bedroom to lie on the ground so they all had something comfortable to sleep on. Gabriel and Kaylee were on one mattress, while Sammy and Theo were on the other—they all had fallen asleep not long after I pretended to. I was lying on one of the sofas. Peeling my eyes open slowly, I noticed the other sofa was still vacant, and two people were not in my line of sight. I searched the room carefully to see where they had gone off, too, trying not to get caught for being awake. Both Everett and Hudson were standing by the back door, looking out to the
