Chapter 3

مؤلف: Adam
I pushed open the terrace doors and let the cold October air rush in. I leaned against the railing and took a deep breath.

Inside the banquet hall, Luca rested a hand on Charlotte's lower back as they talked and laughed with the guests.

Under the lights, their shadows blended together. They looked like they belonged together, in a picture that had no place for me.

They had grown up together and had twenty-nine years of history. They had shared countless nights and mornings that I had never been part of.

I was the foster daughter of Luca's father, Vittorio Vitali. Luca and I had known each other for only five years.

I had never doubted that Luca cared about me. Everything he did for me seemed sincere.

From the wedding dress and the ring to the honeymoon destination, he took care of every detail, as if he wanted to give me the best of everything.

When he proposed, candy pink filled the air. It was so intense that I believed no one in the world could love me more.

But I had forgotten one thing. Candy pink wasn't the color of love.

I put my phone on silent mode. While everyone was focused on Luca and Charlotte, I slipped out through the back door.

My driver, Carlo Moretti, was waiting in the side alley. He had been there for an hour.

"Princess." Carlo opened the door. The old man's eyes were bright under the streetlamp. "Why are you alone?"

I sank into the back seat and buried my face in my hands. "Carlo, cancel the wedding."

Carlo's hands shook with emotion. "Princess, you—"

I cut him off, confirming what he had already guessed. "Tell my father that I'm coming home."

The car pulled away. I leaned back against the seat and reached into my handbag. I took out a gold watch with the Rosso family's crest engraved on the back.

The name I had buried for five years slowly came back to me, burning in my chest.

Nicole Rosso.

My father, Bryan Rosso, was the Don of Northport's most powerful mafia family.

Five years ago, a rival family had tried to kill me several times. To keep me safe, my father and brother sent me to Crestwood, where I joined the Vitali household as a foster daughter.

Vittorio Vitali, my adoptive father and Luca's own father, was an ordinary businessman whom my father had once saved during a shooting at the docks.

On his deathbed, he put my hand in Luca's and asked him to take care of me as a way of repaying the debt he owed my father.

Luca knelt beside his father's bed and promised he would love and protect me forever.

The candy pink around him had made me believe his promise was love.

Now I knew the truth. His kindness had been an act so he could inherit the family fortune. Yet I had loved him with all my heart.

To keep Luca safe from my family's enemies, I had refused every offer from my family to bring me home. Instead, I stayed beside Luca and pretended to be a poor orphan. I endured the insults and judgment of high society just to protect him.

They thought the Vitalis had given me a place in their world. They had no idea that I was the one who had been protecting them all along. How ridiculous.

I returned inside and went to my room.

Luca called five times. Then he left a voicemail. "Where did you go? It's time to cut the cake. Everyone's waiting for you."

His voice was still gentle, though he sounded a little anxious.

In front of others, he was always the perfect fiancé. He was attentive, considerate, and devoted. If I couldn't see the colors inside his heart, I would have believed his act too.

My phone rang again. Luca's name flashed on the screen.

"Nicole?" His voice came through the phone. He sounded tired and annoyed. "Where are you? You just left without a word. No answer, no reply. Do you realize how embarrassing that was for Charlotte?"

I said nothing. He was silent for three seconds. "You're angry."

"Because of Charlotte?" There was a hint of guilt in his voice. "Nicole, she and I grew up together. She came all the way here to be your maid of honor..."

"Luca." I cut him off. "What flavor is the cake?"

He paused, confused. "Your favorite. Mango."

I laughed out loud. "I'm allergic to mango. Charlotte is the one who has always loved it."

He paused for a moment. I could already imagine the look on his face.

His brows pulled together. Surprise flashed in his slate blue eyes, then quickly turned to worry as he tried to think of an explanation.

"I'm coming to you," he said.

"Don't bother." I hung up and tossed my phone onto the bed.

I knew he would come. His inheritance depended on our marriage. No matter how he really felt about me, he had to keep pretending he loved me.

Sure enough, late that night, he showed up. But he wasn't alone. Charlotte had come with him.

The night the Vitali family went bankrupt, it was pouring. The power was out in the old mansion. Only the dying fire gave off a little light in the darkness.Charlotte threw the last of her designer bags into a suitcase, each one hitting it with a thud. "The Winston family is finished. The Vitali family is ruined! All because of that bitch! And you're still sitting here thinking about her! Luca, I should have left you a long time ago!"Luca sat on the dusty floor, holding the wedding ring that should have been mine.He suddenly looked up, his eyes filled with anger."Leave?" He got to his feet and slowly walked toward her. His voice was low and cold. "You want to leave now, Charlotte? Who begged me to marry her? Who cried and said she couldn't live without me?""That was when you were still the Vitali heir!" Charlotte let out a shrill laugh that was almost frightening. "I thought we'd have everything! But look at us now! Nicole... she's a monster!""Shut up!" Luca grabbed her by the th

"How did you know?" Luca's voice was rough and shaky. "When did you find out?""Please, Nicole. Let me explain." He grabbed my wrist so tightly that it hurt. The moment he touched me, his emotions rushed over me like a wave.Navy regret covered every inch of him. Beneath it burned a bright crimson. Love.I looked into his slate blue eyes. The panic and pain in them seemed too real to fake."I've been such a fool!" His fingers trembled. "I always thought you didn't matter because I was so sure you'd never leave. But when you didn't show up today, I finally realized that I've loved you all along. Nicole, don't leave me. I'm begging you. Please, just give me one chance."What a joke.I had stood by him faithfully for five years and never earned one moment of real love. And the instant I turned to leave, his love came flooding in."What are you saying, Luca?" Charlotte stared at him in disbelief. "You said you loved me! You said you only wanted me!"Luca sank to his knees. "I'm sorry, Nico

St. Mary's Cathedral was packed. Luca stood at the end of the red carpet in a tailored suit. The organ began to play. He wore the gentle smile he had practiced countless times, waiting for the woman he was sure would appear. One second. Two seconds. No one appeared at the other end of the carpet.Luca's smile froze. Beside him, Charlotte could barely hide her joy.Luca was about to ask the officiant to stall when every light in the cathedral suddenly went dark. A moment later, the massive screens around the cathedral lit up.Moans filled the cathedral, loud enough to make every guest go red. Then came Luca's voice, unmistakable."After the wedding, I'll send her abroad. I'll make sure she never has a reason to come back. I'm only marrying her for the inheritance. My heart belongs to you, Charlotte."The footage showed Luca and Charlotte kissing on the darkened terrace, their trip on the cruise, and his proposal to her at the church. On the screen, Luca knelt in front of Charlotte and s

Crestwood's neon lights flashed past the windows. For five years, I had kept my head down and hidden who I really was, all to keep the Rosso family's dangerous world away from the man I loved. In the end, the man I had given my heart to was nothing but a wolf hiding behind a gentleman's mask. The grand Rosso estate soon came into view. "Come on, don't be mad. It was all my fault. I swear it'll never happen again! Tomorrow I'm flying to Northport to sign a contract. The trip will take about five days. When I get back, we'll get married. I can't wait."I gently pulled away from Luca's arms. He patted my head and spoke gently. "Get some rest. I've got some paperwork to go through tonight, so I won't be staying."He hurried away, clearly eager to leave. I watched him go and chuckled.Luca didn't know it yet. There wouldn't be a next time. The next day, I started receiving photos of Luca and Charlotte traveling around Northport together. In every photo, the two of them were always close together. They went on a luxury cruise, walked along a romantic beach, and dined at five-star restaurants. They went everywhere together. They kissed under the fireworks, played together in the ocean, and Luca even took her to a church. She wore a wedding gown. He knelt in front of her. "Nicole, let's talk." Charlotte's striking face was full of pride.I looked at Luca. He said nothing and left the room.Charlotte folded her arms and looked down at me like a queen. "Are you okay? Luca's been worried about you. So have I. The cake was my fault. I thought you liked mango too, so I ordered it without asking.""Don't worry about it." I turned away. "It doesn't matter anymore.""Are you scared of me?" She laughed loudly.I frowned and watched her without saying a word."Relax. I'm here to be your bridesmaid, not to steal Luca." She leaned closer and lowered her voice. "Of course, if I really wanted him, you'd have been out of the picture a long time ago."I looked at her. "Really? Charlotte, if you're so confident, why did you stand by and watch Luca get engaged to me?"Charlotte's expression changed. "So what? There will never be a place for you in his heart.""It doesn't matter." I shrugged. "If you want Luca that badly, take him. He says he loves you, but he's still wil
